VSG specializes in showcasing emerging and mid-career artists through solo presentations and group shows. We're located in Chicago's West Town Art District and are dedicated to fostering a vibrant community of creators, art enthusiasts and the patrons of tomorrow.
Since opening in 2022, the gallery has garnered attention from prestigious publications like The New York Times and The Economist for its unique blend of humor and serious art presentations.

Jean's current work revolves around the theme of changing atmosphere, drawing inspiration from nature’s dramatic forces—especially clouds. Captivated by the sky, Jean sees it as a visual metaphor for mental and emotional cycles.

At first glance, the work brims with ferocity, but beneath its sharp edges lies a softer, introspective core—a reflection of Terrazas herself, who is both tender and fierce, nurturing and unyielding. This exhibition centers around 48 stills from a dynamic video capturing a dog mid-bark and growl, inviting viewers to recognize the often-overlooked signs that precede aggression.
Though Terrazas resists autobiographical readings of her work, those who know her will sense personal echoes throughout this body of work. Having exhibited extensively in group shows across Chicago, The Bark Before the Bite marks a pivotal return to solo exhibitions after college. Beyond her artistic practice, Terrazas serves as the lead studio assistant to Tony Fitzpatrick, who played a key role in the production and promotion of the show.
At once commanding and contemplative, The Bark Before the Bite invites audiences to sit with tension, respect authority, and find beauty in the unpredictable.
This show opens in our main gallery space, alongside of Jean Cate, who's solo show opens in our middle gallery.

His paintings feel like your favorite Saturday morning cartoon took a detour through a graffiti-covered alley and came back weirder, funnier, and a little more chaotic. Penn draws from an archive of collected apothecary bottles, building ornate forms with delicately wrought stoppers and cinched bottlenecks. Draped in cascading geometric patterns, the vessels seem to twist and move as supple bodies.
Penn pulls medicalized phrases promising miracle cures from bus benches and billboards, carving them into their ceramic surfaces. Living with chronic illness and pain, Penn is often the intended recipient of the message. This exhibition takes his exploration of identity further, featuring larger canvases, rich textures, and vivid, cosmic-inspired color schemes. Tobacco plants—a major Malawian export used in healing and sacred rituals—glow with bioluminescence, while thermal and infrared skin tones give his subjects a futuristic edge, turning Blackness into a symbol of evolution, revolution, and resilience.
Recent political pressures on immigrants have led Joyo to revisit themes of migration, aiming to portray immigration as a source of strength rather than fear. His work reflects the complex emotions of anger, sadness, and longing for his homeland while finding connections between Malawi and Chicago. As a Black immigrant in a city he loves, he continues to evolve and grow. When he finally returns to Malawi, he will not leave as he came.

Both artists explore the intersections of identity, lineage, and representation through portraiture and figuration, their practices unfold across distinct and parallel spectrums, geographically, historically, and spiritually. Deferred Reality marks the first time their work has been intentionally positioned in dialogue. The exhibition takes its title and conceptual grounding from Langston Hughes' poem Harlem, which opens with the question, “What happens to a dream deferred?” Here, the American Dream is reimagined as an ongoing performance, one sustained by repetition, endurance, and collective belief. Moving between the everyday and the extraordinary, here the American stage becomes a site of spectacle and reimagination. A place where family histories, collective memory, and mystical visions converge. Between nostalgia and futurism, each artist reclaims the right to dream again.

Penny Pinch is an anti-capitalist artist whose practice is rooted in the use of found objects.
Preview and early viewings of the auction will begin as early as Thursday.
As in years past, prices will drop by $100 every hour until each work is sold.
This year's auction will feature 40+ works, along with a selection of fixed-price chairs.
This will be our final year hosting the Dutch Auction format. That said, Penny Pinch and VSG remain committed to collaborating in ways that challenge and reimagine the economics of art—and who knows, maybe we'll bring it back.
Mason Pott, born and working in Chicago, is a fine artist whose practice centers on traditional oil painting with a contemporary sensibility. Known for his vivid explorations of florals and color theory, he approaches each work with a deeply considered, multidisciplinary process. Every painting begins with a carefully staged, high-quality photoshoot of a floral arrangement—an essential step in shaping the composition, lighting, and emotional tenor of the final piece. From there, Pott hand-cuts an aluminum panel to echo the contours of the bouquet, creating a sculptural support that blurs the line between painting and object.
This integration of form and subject transforms the still-life tradition, inviting viewers to engage the work as both image and physical presence. Pott’s practice reflects his belief in the interconnectedness of craft, intuition, and design. His meticulous attention to color relationships animates the surface of each painting, resulting in works that feel simultaneously timeless and distinctly of the present. He received his BFA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2015.

Deb Koo is an oil painter based in Charlotte, North Carolina, whose work reflects a refined balance between cultural perspective and painterly experimentation. She began her formal art studies at Smith College and went on to earn her MFA in Western Painting from Ewha Womans University in Seoul. A member of the Goodyear Arts Collective and a professor of art at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, Koo actively contributes to Charlotte’s creative community. Her work has been exhibited locally at Goodyear Arts, LaCa Projects, Sozo Gallery, and The Mint Museum Randolph, as well as nationally and internationally at Lorin Gallery in Los Angeles, Tchotchke Gallery in New York, and Delphian Gallery in London.

Terra Machina explores the relationship between nature and technology.
Using exceptional materials sourced from around the world, Lefty OUT There combines modern machinery with handcrafted techniques to reveal their natural beauty. The result honors each material's origins while celebrating fine art and contemporary craftsmanship. Running through every piece is Lefty's signature polymorph pattern, inspired by vibration, frequency, and the interconnected systems found throughout nature. The pattern reflects the rhythms that exist at every scale, from microscopic cellular structures to the landscapes of our terrain. It serves as a reminder that the same forces shaping the natural world are constantly at work around and within us.
Terra Machina also represents a new chapter in Lefty's practice. Every work in the exhibition introduces new materials, fabrication methods, and creative processes that have never before appeared in his work. By combining natural materials with contemporary machines, the exhibition challenges the idea that nature and technology exist in opposition.
