Puerto Rico’s colonial status and geographical location situate it as a locus of global encounters and ongoing displacement. As such, the Puerto Rican diaspora can be understood as a collage of overlapping histories of colonialism, resistance, and survival. This exhibition engages with collage as both practice and metaphor. A collage is an assemblage, an art technique that uses discrete materials, images, or text to create a whole picture. Countering the concept of a melting pot, which emphasizes assimilation and loss of culture, the idea of a collaged community allows for the celebration of roots and relations.

This exhibition also considers the close relationship between photography and collage, both notable 20th-century art forms. It takes the first major documentary initiative on the Puerto Rican diaspora as a point of departure to examine the enduring legacy of survival and migration. The Puerto Rican Diaspora Documentary Project by community organizer, activist, educator, and documentary photographer Frank Espada (1930–2014, Puerto Rico) was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities from 1979 to 1981. The resulting collection of over 4,000 photos and 130 interviews led to the 2007 publication The Puerto Rican Diaspora: Themes in the Survival of a People, from which this exhibition takes its subtitle.

The artists featured in this exhibition consider the Puerto Rican diaspora in a fluid and expansive way. While several focus on the diaspora in the traditional sense—Puerto Ricans who migrate to the United States—many honor the different diasporas that intersect with the archipelago of Puerto Rico, documenting their communities with care and showing us a collage of Puerto Rican and Caribbean experiences.

Diaspora scatters; collage connects.

Diasporic Collage: Puerto Rico and the Survival of a People is organized by the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University (MSU Broad Art Museum) and the Center for Puerto Rican Studies (CENTRO) at Hunter College, in collaboration with the Diaspora Solidarities Lab (DSL), and curated by Dr. Yomaira Figueroa-Vásquez, directora of the Center for Puerto Rican Studies (CENTRO), formerly associate professor at MSU; Dr. Windy M. celebration of Women’s History Month, the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture (NMPRAC) proudly presents Three Generations Intertwined by Lace, a spectacular exhibition honoring the artistry, innovation, and global impact of three generations of Puerto Rican designers. Opening to the public on Saturday, March 14, 2026, the exhibition pays tribute to the late Mili Arango, alongside celebrated designers Lisa Cappalli and Cecilia Fernández Cappalli, whose work collectively traces the evolution of lace in Puerto Rican fashion.

Curated by Joseph Da’Ponte, President of the Puerto Rican Fashion History Council, the exhibition features more than 50 extraordinary garments that illuminate how lace—long a symbol of elegance, femininity, and craftsmanship—has been preserved, transformed, and reimagined across generations.

From Mili Arango’s iconic mid-century silhouettes to Lisa Cappalli’s refined and timeless collections, and now to Cecilia Fernández Cappalli’s contemporary leadership as Creative Director of Cappalli New York, the exhibition tells a powerful story of lineage, mentorship, and innovation. Together, these women have elevated Boricua design onto international stages while remaining rooted in cultural tradition.

“This exhibition is a tribute to the beautiful Puerto Rican tradition of lacework—lovingly preserved, reimagined, and carried from our island to the world,” said Veronica Ocasio, Director of Education, Exhibitions, and Programming at NMPRAC. “During Women’s History Month, we proudly honor the artistry, vision, and resilience of the remarkable family of women featured in Three Generations Intertwined by Lace. This exhibition celebrates not only exquisite craftsmanship, but also the enduring, intergenerational power of Puerto Rican creativity that continues to shape homes, fashion, and runways around the world.”

For curator Joseph Da’Ponte, the exhibition is both historic and deeply personal. “This exhibition is a testament to three generations who have preserved and transformed the tradition of lace in fashion,” he noted. “Through their work, lace becomes more than fabric—it becomes memory, heritage, and artistic evolution.”

As the only Puerto Rican museum in the diaspora, NMPRAC continues its commitment to uplifting Puerto Rican artists, cultural leaders, and creative pioneers. Three Generations Intertwined by Lacepositions fashion as both fine art and cultural archive—an embodiment of resilience, preservation, and legacy.
","type":null,"state":"published","slug":"three-generations-intertwined-by-lace","created_at":"2026-08-16 14:22:40.373","updated_at":"2026-08-16 14:22:40.373","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":2433,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'14':70B '2026':71B '50':120B 'across':141B 'alongsid':81B 'also':272B 'arango':80B,145B 'archiv':377B 'around':289B 'art':35B,374B 'artist':339B,358B 'artistri':51B,247B 'beauti':210B 'becom':330B,335B 'boricua':192B 'cappal':85B,89B,154B,165B,173B 'carri':220B 'cecilia':87B,163B 'celebr':23B,82B,266B 'centuri':150B 'collect':92B,159B 'commit':353B 'contemporari':167B 'continu':282B,351B 'council':114B 'craftsmanship':134B,270B 'creativ':170B,280B,362B 'cultur':37B,201B,359B,376B 'curat':102B,293B 'da':105B,295B 'deepli':303B 'design':19B,62B,83B,193B 'detail':6B 'diaspora':349B 'director':171B,230B 'educ':232B 'eleg':131B 'elev':191B 'embodi':379B 'endur':274B 'evolut':13B,95B,340B 'exhibit':10B,48B,73B,116B,177B,204B,233B,265B,298B,306B 'exquisit':269B 'extraordinari':121B 'fabric':333B 'famili':254B 'fashion':9B,101B,112B,286B,323B,370B 'featur':117B,257B 'feminin':132B 'fernández':88B,164B 'fine':373B 'garment':122B 'generat':2A,42B,58B,142B,260B,312B,365B 'global':54B 'heritag':337B 'histor':301B 'histori':27B,113B,241B 'home':285B 'honor':49B,245B 'icon':147B 'illumin':124B 'impact':55B 'innov':52B,186B 'intergener':8B,275B 'intern':195B 'intertwin':3A,43B,261B,366B 'island':223B 'joseph':104B,294B 'lace':5A,15B,45B,97B,126B,263B,321B,329B,368B 'lacework':215B 'late':78B 'leader':360B 'leadership':168B 'legaci':384B 'lineag':183B 'lisa':84B,153B 'long':127B 'love':216B 'march':21B,69B 'memori':336B 'mentorship':184B 'mid':149B 'mid-centuri':148B 'mili':79B,144B 'month':28B,242B 'museum':31B,346B 'nation':30B 'new':174B 'nmprac':38B,237B,350B 'note':325B 'ocasio':229B 'onto':194B 'open':63B 'pay':74B 'person':304B 'pioneer':363B 'pont':106B,296B 'posit':369B 'power':180B,276B 'present':40B 'preserv':137B,217B,315B,382B 'presid':107B 'program':235B 'proud':39B,244B 'public':66B 'puerto':17B,33B,60B,99B,110B,211B,278B,344B,356B 'refin':156B 'reimagin':140B,218B 'remain':198B 'remark':253B 'resili':250B,381B 'rican':18B,34B,61B,100B,111B,212B,279B,345B,357B 'root':199B 'runway':288B 'said':227B 'saturday':68B 'shape':284B 'silhouett':151B 'spectacular':47B 'stage':196B 'stori':181B 'symbol':129B 'tell':178B 'testament':309B 'three':1A,41B,57B,259B,311B,364B 'timeless':158B 'togeth':187B 'trace':11B,93B 'tradit':202B,213B,319B 'transform':138B,317B 'tribut':75B,207B 'uplift':355B 'veronica':228B 'vision':248B 'whose':90B 'women':25B,189B,239B,256B 'work':91B,328B 'world':226B,291B 'york':175B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1786890156/r2vycludlhklhoma1eo4.jpg","calendar":null,"carousel":false,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":34600,"title":"Our Island of Treasures: Puerto Rican Voices from Indiana","starts_at":"2026-07-25 00:00:00","ends_at":"2027-02-19 12:00:00","body":"
Details

Curator:

Daniel Del Real

“These are the treasures we carry with us — across oceans, across generations, and into every place we call home.”

Our Island of Treasures: Puerto Rican Voices from Indiana brings together the work of the ¡WEPArt!
