Immerse yourself in their interpretations of the elements. Reflect on water in its various transformations, as it melts down from ice and snow. The exhibition was juried by Sergio Gomez, artist and curator of the 33 Contemporary Gallery. He selected 20 paintings from the 250 that were submitted. Windows, whether open or closed, represent dualities: freedom vs. constraint, order vs. chaos, and possibility vs. limitation. The window metaphor sets up narrative elements that address boundaries. In some cases, the viewer is outside, looking in. Conversely, the perspective may be from indoors, looking up and out into the horizon. Some paintings are rooted in fantasy, with colorful, surreal characters freely floating in space. Others are purely depictions of light-filled rooms, with curtains billowing in the breeze. The layered meanings within each picture plane keeps viewers guessing, projecting their own narratives onto each scene. A picture window creates the illusion of depth, whether with pure color or with linear perspective. Regardless of each artist’s technique and intention, the window metaphor is open to interpretation.

Artists: Nicole Gordon, David Gista, Leslie Hirshfield, Fletcher Hays, Ellen Holtzblatt, Jennifer Presant, Sarah Kaiser-Amaral, Eleanor Speiss-Ferris, Ken Minami, and Caitlin Winner.

The Grove Gallery

619 Grove Street

Evanston, IL

Hours: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 2 to 7 PM

Website: www.grovegallery.shop
","type":null,"state":"published","slug":"insideout","created_at":"2025-03-14 03:31:22.498","updated_at":"2025-03-14 03:31:22.498","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":1674,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":"2025-04-05 17:00:00","opening_ends_at":"2025-04-05 20:00:00","searchable":"'2':185B '619':175B '7':187B 'address':44B 'amar':162B 'artist':134B,146B 'billow':94B 'boundari':45B 'breez':97B 'caitlin':170B 'case':48B 'chao':31B 'charact':78B 'close':23B 'color':76B,126B 'concept':13B 'constraint':28B 'convers':55B 'creat':118B 'curtain':93B 'david':149B 'depict':86B 'depth':122B 'dualiti':25B 'eleanor':163B 'element':42B 'ellen':155B 'evanston':10B,178B 'exhibit':4B 'explor':12B 'fantasi':74B 'ferri':166B 'fill':90B 'fletcher':153B 'float':80B 'freedom':26B 'freeli':79B 'friday':181B 'galleri':8B,174B 'gista':150B 'gordon':148B 'grove':7B,173B,176B 'guess':107B 'hay':154B 'hirshfield':152B 'holtzblatt':156B 'horizon':68B 'hour':180B 'il':11B,179B 'illus':120B 'indoor':61B 'inside/out':1A,3B 'intent':138B 'interpret':145B 'jennif':157B 'kaiser':161B 'kaiser-amar':160B 'keep':105B 'ken':167B 'layer':99B 'lesli':151B 'light':89B 'light-fil':88B 'limit':35B 'linear':129B 'look':53B,62B 'may':58B 'mean':100B 'metaphor':18B,38B,141B 'minami':168B 'narrat':41B,111B 'nicol':147B 'onto':112B 'open':21B,143B 'order':29B 'other':83B 'outsid':52B 'paint':70B 'perspect':57B,130B 'pictur':103B,116B 'plane':104B 'pm':188B 'possibl':33B 'presant':158B 'project':108B 'pure':85B,125B 'regardless':131B 'repres':24B 'room':91B 'root':72B 'sarah':159B 'saturday':182B 'scene':114B 'set':39B 'space':82B 'speiss':165B 'speiss-ferri':164B 'street':177B 'sunday':184B 'surreal':77B 'techniqu':136B 'viewer':50B,106B 'vs':27B,30B,34B 'websit':189B 'whether':20B,123B 'window':16B,19B,37B,117B,140B 'winner':171B 'within':101B 'www.grovegallery.shop':190B","thumbnail":"http://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1741897163/44fc844e-5248-4c05-95ff-5fa0a1cfb760_ulw82x.jpg","calendar":null,"carousel":false,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":20211,"title":"The AI Controversy","starts_at":"2025-05-03 19:00:00","ends_at":"2025-05-03 21:00:00","body":"
The AI Controversy

Saturday, May 3, 2025

7 PM

The Grove Gallery, 619 Grove St., Downtown Evanston, IL

Join us for a lively discussion on Artificial Intelligence at 'The AI Controversy' event. The portrait genre enables artists to create work that resonates on a visual and emotional level, and ultimately invites reflection, sparks dialogue, and fosters a deeper connection. See unique paintings by local artists of historically-relevant individuals: Maya Angelou, James Baldwin, Malala, and more. The individual sitters’ personalities are communicated through visual elements such as symbolic color, patterns, abstract shapes and brush strokes. Reflect upon the abstract shapes of color and light that shimmer on the surface. Artists in this exhibition blur the lines between representational and abstract approaches. They are open to seeing beyond the horizon, and are keenly aware of subtle shifts in color temperature, mood and atmosphere. Color is an expressive tool which illustrates emotional depth and subjective responses. In this exhibition, juried by Nina Weiss, selections include paintings executed from memory, abstract interpretations of the landscape, and Impressionistic approaches. As a result, this compelling exhibition is comprised of oil, pastel and watercolor paintings with evidence of brush strokes, texture, and bold, Expressionistic colors. With practices as disparate as figurative photography, pencil based portraits and works of oil on canvas these three artists come from varied approaches, but continual probing investigation and a turn towards the abstract links their work together. Through a wide-range of subject matter as disparate as motherhood and the weight of belonging, relationship to place and environment, the cosmos, historical allusions and conversations with artists across time these artists navigate through life with the necessity to make. Each of them mulls what it is to exist in the here and now and how one might grapple with the complexity of being, often finding synthesis and answers in geometric abstraction. There is a profound interest in mark making, foundational craft-based skills, and acts of repetition that show up in the practices of all three, as well as a willingness and curiosity to experiment with materials and explore what medium might best support or express an idea. For these artists, each endeavor influences the direction of future projects, prompting subtle course corrections toward new horizons.

Darren Oberto

Vanessa Filley

Top image: Kate Berry-Brown
","type":null,"state":"published","slug":"triptych-kate-berry-brown-vanessa-filley-and-darren-oberto","created_at":"2026-01-15 00:31:41.451","updated_at":"2026-01-15 00:31:41.451","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":1674,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":"2026-01-10 16:00:00","opening_ends_at":"2026-01-10 19:00:00","searchable":"'abstract':78B,156B 'across':113B 'act':171B 'allus':108B 'answer':153B 'approach':68B 'artist':64B,112B,116B,207B 'base':54B,168B 'belong':99B 'berri':4A,14B,30B,231B 'berry-brown':3A,13B,29B,230B 'best':199B 'brown':5A,15B,31B,232B 'canva':61B 'come':65B 'complex':146B 'contempl':45B 'continu':70B 'converg':24B 'convers':110B 'correct':219B 'cosmos':106B 'cours':218B 'craft':167B 'craft-bas':166B 'curios':189B 'darren':9A,19B,223B 'demand':41B 'direct':212B 'dispar':49B,92B 'endeavor':209B 'environ':104B 'exist':133B 'experi':191B 'explor':195B 'express':202B 'figur':51B 'filley':7A,17B,32B,226B 'find':150B 'foundat':165B 'futur':214B 'geometr':155B 'grappl':143B 'histor':107B 'horizon':222B 'idea':204B 'imag':228B 'influenc':210B 'inquiri':42B 'interest':161B 'investig':72B 'invit':44B 'kate':2A,12B,229B 'life':119B 'link':79B 'make':124B,164B 'mark':163B 'materi':193B 'matter':90B 'medium':197B 'might':142B,198B 'motherhood':94B 'mull':128B 'mysteri':39B 'navig':117B 'necess':122B 'new':221B 'oberto':10A,20B,34B,224B 'often':149B 'oil':59B 'one':141B 'pencil':53B 'photographi':52B 'place':37B,102B 'point':22B 'portrait':55B 'practic':47B,179B 'probe':71B 'profound':160B 'project':215B 'prompt':216B 'rang':87B 'relationship':100B 'repetit':173B 'show':175B 'skill':169B 'subject':89B 'subtl':217B 'support':200B 'synthesi':151B 'three':63B,182B 'time':114B 'togeth':82B 'top':227B 'toward':76B,220B 'triptych':1A,11B 'turn':75B 'vanessa':6A,16B,225B 'vari':67B 'weight':97B 'well':184B 'wide':86B 'wide-rang':85B 'willing':187B 'work':27B,57B,81B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1766857348/knome8o6zyu1gy1hkcnn.jpg","calendar":null,"carousel":false,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":26814,"title":"Resilience in Color","starts_at":"2026-02-07 14:00:00","ends_at":"2026-02-28 17:00:00","body":"
Exhibition of art of and by ВІРОС (Black Indigenous People of Color) Artists

Curated by Fran Joy

Pictured: Reuniting Family (Leaving the South Under Threat of Klan Violence) by Jevoid Simmons
","type":null,"state":"published","slug":"resilience-in-color","created_at":"2026-02-10 15:30:16.056","updated_at":"2026-02-10 15:30:16.056","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":1674,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":"2026-02-07 14:00:00","opening_ends_at":"2026-02-07 17:00:00","searchable":"'art':6B 'artist':16B 'black':11B 'color':3A,15B 'curat':17B 'exhibit':4B 'famili':23B 'fran':19B 'indigen':12B 'jevoid':33B 'joy':20B 'klan':30B 'leav':24B 'peopl':13B 'pictur':21B 'resili':1A 'reunit':22B 'simmon':34B 'south':26B 'threat':28B 'violenc':31B 'вірос':10B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1769708484/st1g3ink8p1ctjcootpc.jpg","calendar":null,"carousel":false,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":27834,"title":"Women Painting Women","starts_at":"2026-03-07 14:00:00","ends_at":"2026-04-25 17:00:00","body":"
Opening Reception: Saturday, March 7th, 2026 from 2 to 5 PM

The Women Painting Women Exhibition expands upon our collective identities as figurative artists.
