How much has society really changed since the beginning of slavery? Do Black lives matter even in the 21st century? The exhibition interrogates these questions and more through a haunting photographic essay and paper sculptures styled to mimic garments worn by female European nobility between the 15th – 19th centuries. As part of a developing master series of paper gown sculptures, the series speaks to the shocking treatment of Blacks throughout history and the trauma inflicted on their bodies as juxtaposed with the abstract idea of Black freedom. Simultaneously, the body of work engages with a vision of the future – one of hope, strength, resilience, and beauty.
\r\n\r\n
The materials used for the paper gown sculptures are transformed in a way that allows the artist to represent layers of time and the events of the past as they intrude upon the present. Through the materials, the artist suggests that although we cannot change the past, we can act to change the present, as we activate the memories, visions, and legacies of our ancestors. Rewriting History seeks to reconnect viewers to the past so that parallels with current events are amplified.
\r\n\r\n
Fabiola Jean-Louis is a Haitian born, Brooklyn, NY based mixed media artist. Under the license of free expression, the artist reimagines new relationships between living and past figures of power implicating them in various acts of violence or sexually compromised behavior. By evoking scenarios that are not easily conjured up through other mediums, Mabulu’s work represents a contribution to the advancement of protest art and to the role of the artist as activist. According to Mabulu, “we need an evolution through art because we are not achieving our freedom through politics”. The exhibition which opens to the public on August 27, 2022, will continue through November 27, 2022 and is in partnership with the MCA Chicago and the groundbreaking retrospective exhibition “NICK CAVE: FOROTHERMORE,” which is currently on view at the MCA until October 2, 2022. This is the first time that these works of art will be installed publicly and the DuSable is the first museum in the world to ever exhibit Nick Cave’s or Jack Cave’s “fashion art.”

“I am thrilled to be sharing my career’s work in my chosen hometown. I don’t take the gravity of this moment for granted,” said Nick Cave. “From the MCA to the DuSable Museum and beyond this community and city-wide project is the realization of a dream that could only happen in Chicago—this way, with this brilliant team and throughout this great city.”

“The Color Is” will consist of 40-45 unique looks of wearable art on non-Binary human forms suspended on elevated platforms of varying heights. Accessories such as head pieces and footwear will be highlighted, and the head-to-toe garments have been constructed from a wide variety of materials including beads, pearls, wire, feathers, sequins, synthetic hair and recycled textiles and prints designed by the Cave brothers. The ensembles feature intricate layering that is emblematic of human universality, highlighting intricacy, complexity, color, and uniqueness. According to both Nick Cave and Jack Cave the clothing is genderless. More than 400 individual items have been condensed into looks that may consist of 200 or more individual objects. Once layered and combined the different objects will make-up complete looks, all designed and crafted by the artists.

“The Color Is” also contains an education component which highlights the exhibition themes, references and history through digital animation, film montages, extensive explanatory text and high resolution still images. There will be some surprise audio visual elements featured in the exhibition as well as on the DuSable Museum website and the Bloomberg Connects app. All objects in the exhibition were created for both “The Color Is” live performance and “The Color Is” exhibition as a companion exhibition of NICK CAVE FOROTHERMORE and are Nick Cave’s most recent body of created work, often referencing work of his retrospective contemporary art archive. The pieces have been created within the past 9 to 12 months.

“I am proud to be able to showcase so many facets of the Black experience through fashion, especially alongside my brother, Nick, “ said Jack Cave. “The process of being able to combine both of our individual styles and work them into one fluid exhibit that educates and celebrates everything from sustainability, queer liberation, and Black presence in mainstream high fashion has been an honor.”

“We are thrilled and honored to work with these brilliant artists to exhibit their amazing works of wearable art at the DuSable. This unique exhibit and accompanying educational activities are a prime example of our goals and inspiration for our recent rebranding as both a museum and education center. We recognize the importance of presenting Black artists personal creative journeys as well as the cultural influences that inform their art and sharing that vision with young people and communities from which they came. Nick and Jack Cave’s imperative to bring their work into the heart of the Black community expresses not only their personal philosophy but also the mission of the DuSable. We are also excited to continue our partnership with the MCA in mounting this exhibition during the run of FOROTHERMORE, which allows visitors to experience Nick’s work in both locations and from multiple perspectives –a groundbreaking approach that stems from our strong collaborative partnership,” said Perri Irmer, President and CEO of The DuSable Museum.

“The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center celebrates the multilayered, elements of Black culture that Nick Cave and Jack Cave’s brilliant work is steeped in,” said Danny Dunson, Director of Curatorial Services and Community Partnerships. “Our presentation of The Color Is, positions Nick Cave’s and Jack Cave’s art practices within the heart of Chicago’s African American community. The South Side community represents what continues to inspire both Cave brothers as artists and activists.”

Fashion has been a natural part of the Cave brother’s artistic practice. Growing up with five aunts who sewed, Nick and Jack Cave had an early interest in material culture and construction. The brothers are inspired by the homey-whimsical interiors of their grandparent’s home that contained African American handicraft traditions, such as quilting and crochet. Both Nick and Jack Cave studied fiber arts as undergraduates at the Kansas City Art Institute where they first learned to sew. In the 1980’s the brothers would create fashion spectaculars together.

“The Color Is “exhibition has been curated for the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center by Danny Dunson, Director of Curatorial Services and Community Partnerships; fabricated by Martin Giese, Vice President of Exhibitions and Collections and Brenda Liboy, Lead Exhibitions Designer. The exhibition has been in development since 2021 and initially was shown as a live performance at The Art Edge Gala produced and presented by the MCA and held at the historic Daniel Burnham designed Roundhouse of the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center. “The Color Is” is a companion exhibition to “NICK CAVE: FOROTHERMORE,” a city-wide celebration of the Chicago-based artist.

ABOUT THE DUSABLE MUSEUM

The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center, a Smithsonian Affiliate, is the nation’s first independent Museum dedicated to the collection, preservation and study of the history and culture of African Americans and people of African descent. The exhibition “Diaspora Stories: Selections from the CCH Pounder Collection” will open on March 18, 2023, and continue through July 16, 2023.

The exhibition which was curated especially for the DuSable Museum contains 24 works of art by world-renowned artists including Kehinde Wiley, Patricia Renee Thomas, Reginald Jackson, Robert Pruitt, Greg Breda, Ebony G. Patterson, and Mickalene Thomas, among others. Each item was curated and personally selected in collaboration with the DuSable and Ms. Pounder from her extensive collection specifically for “Diaspora Stories: Selections from the CCH Pounder Collection.”

Award-winning actress CCH Pounder is well-known for portraying “Dr. Loretta Wade” on the CBS series, “NCIS: New Orleans” for seven seasons and other notable projects include the television shows, “The Good Fight, “Warehouse 13,” “Sons of Anarchy,” “The Shield,” “Law & Order: SVU,” “ER” and HBO’s “The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency” which garnered Pounder her fourth Emmy® nomination. Ms. Pounder is currently reprising her role as the clan spiritual leader “Mo’at” in James Cameron’s hit film “Avatar: The Way of Water.” Her numerous film credits include her breakout role in Bagdad Café. A graduate of Ithaca College, she received an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from the school and in 2021, received the Ithaca College Alumni Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Pounder serves on the Board of the African Millennium Foundation and was a founding member of Artists for a New South Africa. An advocate of the arts, she is active in the Creative Coalition and recent accolades for Pounder include the Visionary Leadership Award in Performing Arts from the Museum of the African Diaspora (MOAD) in San Francisco.

In addition to her prolific acting career, CCH Pounder has been extensively involved with the arts as a patron, collector, gallery owner and museum founder. Originally from Georgetown, Guyana, Pounder’s collection consists of Caribbean and African artists and artists of the African Diaspora. Her collection is heavily concentrated in Contemporary Art but also includes traditional African sculptures. Recently, pieces from Ms. Pounder’s collection have been exhibited at select museums and organizations.

In 1993 Pounder and her husband, the late Boubacar Koné, founded and built the Musee Boribana, the first privately owned contemporary museum in Dakar Senegal, which they gifted to that nation in 2014. Pounder’s personal collection contains over 500 works of art from which the pieces in “Diaspora Stories: Selections from the CCH Pounder Collection,” were selected.

Perri Irmer, President and CEO of The DuSable Museum stated, “We are thrilled to be welcoming Diaspora Stories: Selections from the CCH Pounder Collection to the DuSable Museum. Ms. Pounder is an amazing talent with a unique and impressive collection of Black artists’ works that we are honored to bring to our Chicago audience. Our mission, reflected through our recent rebranding as The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center, is to expose visitors to the entirety of the Black diaspora, telling stories of the Caribbean and Africa as well as America. This exciting exhibition and CCH Pounder’s own history, exemplify this mission.”

“‘Diaspora Stories,’ centers the imagery of Black people in quotidian narratives, portraiture, spirituality, and history. The exhibition is presented from the point of view of the collector. Pounder has collected hundreds of pieces by African and African Diasporic artists for over 45 years. The curated grouping of paintings highlights the early work of prominent midcareer artists such as Kehinde Wiley, Ebony G. Patterson and Mickalene Thomas, alongside emerging talents like Harmonia Rosales and Patricia Renee Thomas and seminal artists such as Betye Saar and the late Geoffrey Holder, “said Danny Dunson Director of Curatorial Services and Community Partnerships.

About The DuSable Museum

The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center, a Smithsonian affiliate, is the nation’s first independent museum dedicated to the collection, preservation and study of the history and culture of Africans Americans and people of African descent.
