The Cleve Carney Museum of Art’s goal is to encourage the growth and understanding of contemporary and modern art through exhibitions and educational programming that cultivates a variety of perspectives. The museum is named in honor of one of Glen Ellyn’s most revered philanthropists, the late Cleve Carney, a contemporary art collector and supporter of the arts.
Located on the campus of the College of DuPage the CCMA is an intimate museum space that provides year round programming to the public.

Chicago has long been an important center for comics and graphic storytelling. During the early decades of the twenty-first century, the publication Linework, under the guidance of acclaimed cartoonist, designer, and educator Ivan Brunetti, became a gathering point for many of the most compelling voices in Chicago’s contemporary comics scene. Bringing together emerging and established artists, the publication fostered a moment of creative exchange that helped shape the city’s reputation as a hub for alternative comics.
This exhibition revisits the Linework publication and the artistic community that formed around it, highlighting both the collaborative spirit of the project and the paths its contributors have taken since. Among them is Chicago-based cartoonist Nick Drnaso, whose graphic novel Sabrina became the first graphic novel longlisted for the Booker Prize.

Think Again presents posters created by the Yugoslavian artist collective IRWIN for the 1989-90 Slovenian National Theatre season. In the year 1984 the IRWIN artists joined with other artists to form the Neue Slowenische Kunst (New Slovenian Art) political art collective, or NSK. Aware that the government was co-opting artwork and images to bolster their power, NSK intentionally used only recycled images to challenge the authoritarian establishment.
This exhibit examines how the IRWIN Collective artists used their artwork and design to undermine the oppressive communist regime of former Yugoslavia. Think Again is centered around IRWIN Collective posters, held in the College of DuPage Permanent Art Collection, which will be contextualized with historical information and showcased alongside contemporary designs.
The title “Think Again” is related to the term “doublethink” introduced by George Orwell in the novel 1984. Orwell presented “Doublethink” as the act of holding two opposing ideas in the mind at the same time, tricking oneself into accepting a false fact while forgetting you ever knew the truth. This concept parallels propaganda attempts by the Yugoslavia regime that the IRWIN Collective worked against.

At the heart of the exhibition is an original film, Writing History with Lightning, a single-screen work composed of various altered and looped scenes from D.W. Griffith’s controversial 1915 film Birth of a Nation projected onto the interior structure of Baltimore’s abandoned Parkway Theatre, spilling across architectural details, theater seats and discarded objects from the building’s past. These projected images were then captured with a high-definition camera, and the resultant footage set to a soundtrack that is a deeply manipulated version of the original score of Birth of a Nation. Through this treatment, Hironaka and Suib destabilize and reverse the racist narrative structure of the Griffith’s 1915 film, using the methods of collage and appropriation to offer a counter-mythical historical vision. .
\r\n\r\nThe use of the Parkway Theatre is especially poignant as it was built the same year that Griffiths’ Birth of a Nation was released, and later hosted a screening of the film. A full century later, from its location at the intersection of North Avenue and N. Charles Street, the theater found itself proximate to the protests against the death of Freddie Gray who died while in Baltimore police custody.
\r\n\r\nFor the installation at the Cleve Carney Art Gallery Writing History with Lightning will be shown in an enclosed screening room. In addition, in the gallery outside of the screening room Hironaka and Suib will be creating a large-scale light installation titled Bright White Light.
\r\n\r\nBased in Philadelphia, Nadia Hironaka and Matthew Suib have been collaborators since 2008. They are recipients of several honored awards including a 2015 Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, Pew Fellowships in the Arts and Fellowships from CFEVA and Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. Their work has been widely exhibited both domestically and abroad at venues including, Fondazione MAXXI (Rome), New Media Gallery (Vancouver), The Institute of Contemporary Art (Philadelphia), UCLA Hammer Museum, PS1/MoMA, Philadelphia Museum of Art and Arizona State University Art Museum. They have been artists-in-residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts, the Banff Centre, and the Millay Colony for Arts. Matthew Suib is co-founder of Greenhouse Media and Nadia Hironaka serves as a professor and department chair of film and video at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Hironaka & Suib are represented by Locks Gallery.

\r\n\r\nDrawing on Goethe's interpretation of color theory, "Color Code" consists of nine paintings - six-feet-by-six-feet colored squares - applied to the gallery's walls. The paintings, using the international Morse Code system of dots and dashes to spell out "SOS", are configured with a variation on complementary color patterns, creating a playful visual excursion. In this pattern, the color scheme maintains the consistency of complementary colors, but in a softer, more harmonious manner. \r\n\r\nThree artists from the exhibition will be selected to receive a $500 award for outstanding submissions and one artist will receive a $1,500 award for best in show. The awards will be determined by the panel of jurors and be based on the artworks quality of execution, conceptual clarity as well as its relevance to contemporary art and society.

This however, is a group show about anxious paintings. The work in this exhibition was not created to help us deal with the anxiety we may have. Instead anxiety is baked into the work and is largely responsible for its content. This show may answer questions like, “What are some of the causes of anxiety and what does anxiety tell us about ourselves? Does anxiety have a purpose? Can it be funneled into something useful?” There is plenty to be anxious about right now-- health care, immigration status, reproductive rights, and the environment are just a few subjects that might occupy your thoughts. But what about that low-grade, ever present anxiety, the kind that you wake up with and have learned to ignore? Soren Kierkegaard wrote extensively about that kind of anxiety and the danger of losing yourself. If you lose your wallet or your keys, it doesn’t take long to realize they’re missing, but when you lose yourself you can go months or even years without noticing.

The Cleve Carney Art Gallery presents Base Materials, a solo exhibition of work by artist Garry Noland, based both in Kansas City, Missouri, and Los Angeles, California. Featuring two-dimensional and sculptural work, the show will include a full wall-length version of If your six year old saw something like this would he know how to phone for help?, containing never-before-seen elements of the ongoing installation piece produced from the April 1972 issue of National Geographic Magazine.
Active since 1980, Noland is well-known for using reclaimed material to produce abstract works, which at first glance belie their complexity. Often using large pieces of polystyrene dredged from lakes nearby his native Kansas City, Noland transforms the corroded material with glass marbles and metallic tape to “evoke tombstones weathered beyond reading, or memorials disconnected from that which they once commemorated,” wrote Lynne Warren, Adjunct Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, in the catalogue essay for Noland’s 2015 exhibition Unorganized Territory. Through these materials, Noland questions the conventional tools used to create art, and in doing so also contests the dominant cultural narratives of our time.
“This exhibition has developed in direct response to the gallery space,” said Gallery Director & Curator Justin Witte. “Garry will expand on current works, including photographic collage pieces, alongside abstract sculptures and assemblages.”

The guest juror this year is Josh Dihle. Josh Dihle received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2012 and his BA at Middlebury College in 2007. Recent solo exhibitions include Valerie Carberry Gallery (Chicago,IL), and Pleasant Plains (Washington D.C.). Group exhibitions include Essex Flowers (New York, NY), Unisex Salon (New York, NY), Annarumma Gallery (Naples, Italy), Shane Campbell Gallery (Chicago, IL), Elmhurst Art Museum (Elmhurst, IL), the University of Maine Museum of Art (Bangor, ME), and DUTTON (New York, NY). Dihle teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and co-directs the Chicago artist project space Julius Caesar.

One of Mexico’s most celebrated artists was a printmaker, a common man who died a pauper, his body interred in an unmarked grave. Yet, José Guadalupe Posada reached his countrymen through perhaps more than 20,000 images documenting nearly every aspect of life. As Mexico modernized in the late 19th century, its capital bustled with published materials to satisfy the growing metropolis and its budding middle class, intelligentsias, and thousands of new residents relocating from the countryside. Employed by the visionary publisher Antonio Vanegas Arroyo, Posada created expressive images reflecting and informing the transitioning culture of Mexico City’s residents, many of whom were illiterate. Posada’s satirical skeletons, or calaveras, have become the most iconic and celebrated of his work.
Decades after his death, art historians and artists continue to recognize Posada’s cultural contributions, reflecting not only the spirit of Mexican identity in his time and ours but imparting a universal perspective extending well beyond the borders of his native Mexico. Underwriting Posada’s legacy was his main editor Antonio Vanegas Arroyo, whose hand directed and crafted the publications displaying and catering to the popular culture of Mexico.

Nick Cave is a messenger, artist and educator working between the visual and performing arts through a wide range of mediums inclusive of sculpture, installation, video, sound and performance. His solo exhibitions have expanded globally from the United States through France, Africa, Denmark, Asia, South America and the Caribbean. He has been described as a Renaissance artist and says of himself, \"I have found my middle and now ... working toward what I am leaving behind.\" Cave is well known for his “Soundsuits” sculptural forms based on the scale of his body. “Soundsuits” camouflage the body, masking and creating a second skin that conceals race, gender and class, forcing the viewer to look without judgment. Cave received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute; he also works as a professor at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

This Fall the Cleve Carney Museum of Art will be one of the host sites for SOS Color Code 2020. Beginning on September 15th, the International Day of Democracy, through the 2020 US Election Day on November 3, SOS Color Code 2020 will transform the international signal of distress into a sign of solidarity and connectedness. Using the universal languages of morse code and color theory, the three flag installation will appear in multiple locations throughout Chicago and the US, calling for humanity and a willingness to help one another. Visualizing morse code into dots and dashes a pattern forms with each flag representing the letters S (three dots) O (three dashes) S (three dots) allowing it to remain an effective visual distress signal, an ambigram that can be read upside down or right side up.
When the international distress signal SOS was adopted in 1908, its easily recognizable and unique code produced aural unity, a sense of calm in life or death situations. As the world adjusts to new norms in challenging times, SOS Color Code 2020 offers a reconsideration of how language, objects and symbols, and even color can help us find stable ground and safety no matter where we are. Situated in specific public and domestic settings, during the crucial time leading up to the US Election, SOS Color Code 2020 reminds us, as US Representative John Lewis said, “Democracy is not a state. It is an act, and each generation must do its part to help build what we called the Beloved Community, a nation and world society at peace with itself.”
Luftwerk is the artist collaboration of Petra Bachmaier and Sean Gallero. With space as their canvas, they transform environments into immersive experiences. Since founding in 2007, Luftwerk has amassed a significant body of work ranging from site-specific installations to experimental projects that interpret data. In each project they are interested in the abilities of how light and color can be utilized to shift perception and enhance experience. http://luftwerk.net/

Cesáreo Moreno, Chief Curator at the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, presents a talk about 20th Century Mexican art and its development from local markets to museums around the world. The presentation will reveal artistic movements that emerged from the Mexican Revolution, along with the role of nationalism and the visual arts. He will explore the didactic murals, prints and the iconography that ultimately inspired the 1960s Chicano murals in the U.S. and led to public art on the streets of the Pilsen neighborhood.

College of DuPage (COD) Art History Professor David Ouellette explores the dominating theme of animals in Kahlo’s work. Kahlo was known for her love of animals, giving a home to many at the Casa Azul, and they also took on symbolic meaning in her paintings.

The Tres Frida’s project was created by Reveca Torres and Mariam Pare, two artists paralyzed by a spinal cord injury. The artists met online and bonded through art, injury and a deep connection to Frida Kahlo. Soon after, they decided to recreate Frida Kahlo’s painting Dos Fridas using photography, making their own costumes and inserting themselves in the image sitting in their wheelchairs. Photographer and disability advocate, Tara Ahern, connected to the project through her own experience as a woman with muscular dystrophy and scoliosis as well as a shared love of Frida.
The women often discussed their experience as people with disabilities and how they could utilize their individual experiences and artistic talents to produce and innovate thought provoking art. Reveca, Mariam and Tara began to recreate other iconic images in art, history and pop culture and explore different facets of life and disability. The Tres Fridas collection includes recreations of Dos Fridas, Mona Lisa, Rosie the Riveter, The Last Supper, Whistler’s Mother, Old Guitarist, Christina’s World and more, all with the subjects being people with disabilities.
The artists recently were awarded a Hulu/Kartemquin accelerator grant for the documentary film Tres Fridas that documents & records Reveca, Mariam and Tara’s creative process as women artists with disabilities and authenticates the human experience of disability not as one of inspiration, shame, fear, or pity, but as one that is familiar and painted with love, pain, frustration, beauty, happiness and drive.

The exhibition will be the largest Frida Kahlo exhibition in the Chicago area in more than 40 years, and is hosted by the Cleve Carney Museum of Art (CCMA) and the McAninch Arts Center (MAC) at the College of DuPage (COD). It will feature a 26-piece collection on loan from the Museo Dolores Olmedo as well as a multimedia timeline, 100+ photographic images from the artist’s life, a family-friendly children’s area and a Frida Kahlo inspired garden designed by Ball Horticultural Company, enabling museum-goers of all ages to grasp an understanding of Kahlo’s life and work through a variety of contexts. The exhibition and related programming are organized by “Frida Kahlo: Timeless” Executive Director Diana Martinez (Director of the McAninch Arts Center) in collaboration with Justin Witte, “Frida Kahlo: Timeless” Curator (CCMA Curator)
The exhibition is presented by Bank of America and made possible through support from the College of DuPage Foundation, Milly and Alan Peterson, Ball Horticultural Company, Nicor Gas, Wight & Company, AeroMexico, the National Endowment for the Arts and the DuPage Foundation.

Join us Wednesday, September 8th at 11 a.m. as the COD Visiting Artist Series presents artist Krista Franklin.
Krista Franklin is a writer and visual artist, the author Too Much Midnight (Haymarket Books, 2020), the artist book Under the Knife (Candor Arts, 2018), and the chapbook Study of Love & Black Body (Willow Books, 2012). She is a Helen and Tim Meier Foundation for the Arts Achievement Awardee, and a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant. Her visual art has exhibited at Poetry Foundation, Konsthall C, Rootwork Gallery, Museum of Contemporary Photography, Studio Museum in Harlem, Chicago Cultural Center, National Museum of Mexican Art, and the set of 20th Century Fox’s Empire. She has been published in Poetry, Black Camera, The Offing, Vinyl, and a number of anthologies and artist books.

Jennifer Newsom and Tom Carruthers are architects, artists, and principals of Dream The Combine. They have produced numerous site-specific installations in the U.S. and Canada that explore metaphor, perceptual uncertainties, and the boundary between real and illusory space. They are winners of the 2020-2021 J. Irwin and Xenia S. Miller Prize and the 2018 Young Architects Program at MoMA PS1 for their installation Hide & Seek. Jennifer and Tom are both graduates of the Yale School of Architecture.
Dream the Combine has exhibited at MoMA and MoMA PS1 in New York, NY, as well as in venues in Seattle WA, East Haddam CT, Vancouver BC, Rome Italy, Minneapolis MN and St. Paul MN. Their work has been published widely, including in Metropolis Magazine, Architect Magazine, Log, Architectural Record, The Architects Newspaper, and Dezeen. They are currently at work on upcoming installations in Minneapolis MN, Philadelphia and Wilkinsburg PA,
and Columbus IN.

Jesus of Western Avenue will feature more than 60 recent works by world-renowned multimedia artist and celebrated Chicago resident Tony Fitzpatrick. With work in the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, The Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami, Fitzpatrick has also created album art for music icons including Lou Reed, Steve Earle and The Neville Brothers. Fitzpatrick is best known for his multimedia collages, printmaking, paintings and drawings.
The exhibition will run from Saturday, Oct. 16, 2021 to Monday, January 31, 2022.
Coinciding with the release of Fitzpatrick’s book, Jesus of Western Avenue, the exhibition will feature prints, drawings and collages. These graphically rich and inventive works deliver messages and stories that reflect on the artist’s connection to Chicago, his social and political concerns and our shared changing reality. “While Tony’s artwork is deeply influenced by the Chicagoland area it is recognized around the world,” said Cleve Carney Museum of Art Curator Justin Witte. “Tony is one of the most well-known artists working in Chicago today and we are thrilled to be able to open our new space with an exhibition of his work.”
“It's fitting that I have my final museum exhibition not far from where my work started. It's fitting that it happens in a museum named for my dear friend and supporter Cleve Carney; he was a grand guy; whom I met while caddying for his father Marv Carney,” said artist Tony Fitzpatrick. “I chose to make art, not for a living, but for a life. Cleve chose to create opportunity and possibility for artists - myself being one of them. So much of my creative life began at the College of DuPage. I did my first acting here. I started to seriously write poetry here. I made artmaking my life here. This place has grown amazingly since I left. Mostly because of the great Hal MacAninch, another grand presence who led by example, and with great integrity. My fondest hope for my final museum show is that it honors these men. My city. And all who have passed through these doors.”

Ayanah Moor: I Wish I Could Be You More Often runs Feb. 10 – April 10, 2022. Moor is an artist whose work explores Blackness, gender, desire and language. I Wish I Could Be You More Often will be Moor’s first exhibition at CCMA.
“Ayanah Moor is one of the most compelling painters working in Chicago at this moment,” says CCMA curator Justin Witte. “Her dynamic works stem from her immense skill and her defiant focus on highlighting love and beauty in all of their complexity. It is an honor to present these works.”
For I Wish I Could Be You More Often, Moor will be exhibiting a collection of new paintings. Moor’s work will be hung against a backdrop of images, colors and patterns that reflect the overlapping histories and representations that inform her practice. The backdrop is composed of wall graphics, domestic objects and custom lighting elements.
Says Moor, “The poetics of Blackness and queerness are centered in my approach to painting. I often utilize representations of Black women and femmes from advertising and portraiture to locate readings of desire, myth, love, and fear. Through a process of abstraction, I explore the legibility of Blackness. What makes Blackness renderable, and by extension, what are its boundaries? My visual field includes collage as an armature of which painting navigates, contrasts, or interrupts. I am intrigued by the tension between printed matter and painterly strokes, pools, and fields of color. I view Black folks' historic and contemporary expressions of love as resistance. As an act of liberation, my artwork creates meaning from an exploration of form, color, and image.”
Ayanah Moor: I Wish I Could Be You More Often may be viewed from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesdays through Sundays, Feb. 10 - April 10. The exhibition may also be viewed one hour prior and during intermission for MAC touring performances in the Belushi Performance Hall. In this dynamic presentation, CCMA permanent collection works will be in conversation with contemporary pieces by artists from the Greater Chicago Area. Works by esteemed Chicago artists including Theaster Gates, Amanda Williams, and Riva Lehrer enhance permanent collection highlights by Andy Warhol, Maya Lin, Roxy Paine and more.
Hooking Up offers a rare opportunity for visitors to draw links between disparate works of art while connecting with others in the museum and beyond. A locally commissioned mural, art activities for visitors of all ages, collaboration with Glen Ellyn’s Common Good Cocktail House, and other programs foster a community of conviviality against an inviting backdrop of compelling artworks, familiar and new.

Erin Washington is a multi-media artist whose exquisitely detailed paintings and humorous sculptures have made her one of the most distinctive artists working in Chicago today. I Think We’re Alone Now features works conceptualized during the isolation and surreality of the 2020 quarantine.
Erin Washington is a Painter, Drawer, and Installation artist currently living and working in Chicago. Embracing materiality and labor, Washington examines themes of vulnerability and permanence. Using fugitive and symbolic materials (metal-point, nonphoto-blue lead, fluorescent pigments, blackberries, chalk, space blankets, ashes, bone, plaster bandages and saliva), Washington sources imagery from the Sciences, Mythology, and Art History that represent ruptures and failures in the search for meaning and knowledge. Questioning how time structures transitions in ephemera, she creates paintings and installations which unravel time through the performance of their making (ranging from automatic to belabored) often toward their subsequent corporeal degradation. Colors fade or pigments are burned, spontaneous marks are often in tension with considered constructs. The objects emulate the cycles they describe. The artists’ actions and products are in a constant state of flux, highlighting the disharmony between beauty, “truth” and a fundamentally messy universe. However, the relative temporality of the work’s making counters ambivalence; the immediate process and present-ness the work demands eclipses uncertainty... for the moment.
Washington is a lecturer in the Painting and Drawing Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she received her MFA in 2011. Notable solo exhibitions have been held at such venues as Western Exhibitions in Chicago, Illinois State University, The Riverside Art Center, Riverside Illinois and Specialist Gallery in Seattle. Her work has also been included in group exhibitions at such spaces as Shane Campbell Gallery, Chicago; Julius Caesar, Chicago; and Columbia University in New York.

Alberto Aguilar (b. 1974, Chicago) is a Chicago based artist that uses whatever material is at hand in an attempt to make a meaningful connection with the viewer. He does not distinguish his art practice from his other various life roles which allows him to make work wherever he is.
He has shown and presented his work at various museums, galleries, storefronts, homes and street corners around the world. In this exhibition of new work, Edra Soto has transformed her practice to honor the loss of what once was, while seeking a path of acceptance for the transition of her aging mother who suffers from Alzheimer’s. She channels her struggle to reconcile this new reality through deconstruction, collage, and familiar themes in her art practice, in a new series of works entitled, The Myth of Closure | El Mito del Cierre.
The Myth of Closure | El Mito del Cierre is a deeply personal body of work exploring loss, the now complicated associations of home, and figurative closure. This new work builds on an ongoing project entitled, GRAFT. Soto began using this series of architectural interventions in 2012 and it consists of representations of rejas (wrought iron fences and screens) and quiebrasoles (concrete breeze blocks), the decorative elements ever-present in mid-twentieth century Puerto Rican vernacular architecture.
GRAFT also makes visible the role that African diasporic traditions have played and continue to play in Puerto Rican architecture. Most importantly, however, GRAFT, is Soto’s personal exploration of home and serves as a container for her own relationship to home in Puerto Rico and the United States, where she currently resides.
The Myth of Closure | El Mito del Cierre, transforms the literal and conceptual framework of GRAFT using textural elements, colors, and designs that pay homage to the facades of homes in the neighborhood where her mother is being cared for and now lives – a neighborhood that is past its prime and largely forgotten. Encased within the architectural structures that Soto has built are large heart-shaped openings symbolizing the care with which one frames a memory or a person’s likeness.
For Soto, the heart represents love, fidelity and compassion, and serves as a way to honor the past while processing the vulnerabilities of the present moment. Indeed, the challenges of the past two years have compounded feelings of loss and grief for so many, personally and culturally, and generated a collective trauma. During this time Soto has grappled with questions of: How do we let go? How do we adapt?
As in previous iterations of GRAFT, viewfinders are embedded throughout the structure, inviting guests to physically interact with the work in order to see an image related to Soto’s life in Puerto Rico. Looking into these ocular portals, one is met with images of Soto’s mother in the home she raised her children, framed family photos, memorabilia, as well as photographic examples of rejas and quiebrasoles upon which this work is based.
The act of approaching the structure and peering through these viewfinders is an intimate performance, as it is a window into precious, personal memories that Soto has chosen to commemorate and a glimpse of objects she holds dear. Perhaps, unbeknownst to them, a viewer's participation represents their willingness to discover and empathize, and a commitment to understanding what Soto is honoring in her heart and with this work.
Edra Soto is a Puerto-Rican born multidisciplinary artist who investigates issues of race, class, cultural origins, colonialism, and political power structures, drawing on her own upbringing and relationship to diasporic identity to produce art that is both highly personal and universally resonate. Through her work, Soto aims to engage with audiences directly and empathetically, often subverting the conventions of art-viewing experience to create larger conversations where viewers might play an active role.

Blake Gopnik conducted extensive research to create an in-depth look into Andy Warhol from historical to social to artistic perspectives. Gopnik gives us the clearest documentation to date of a mysterious man and an artist who constantly avoided definition, and whose work continues to impact our art and culture today. Blake Gopnik is the author of Warhol, the definitive biography of the Pop Art artist. He has been the staff critic at the Globe and Mail, the Washington Post and Newsweek, and critic-at-large for ArtInfo and Artnet News. He is a regular contributor to The New York Times and posts his Friday Pic on his website blakegopnik.com and his Warhol findings at Warholiana.com. He holds a PhD in Art History from Oxford University.

Eric Shiner will give insight into who Andy Warhol really was, from humble beginnings as a first-generation immigrant to superstar icon. Over the course of a prominent and prolific career, Andy Warhol practiced his religious faith which has been largely excluded in historic accounts. Warhol also faced challenges as a gay man and a believing Christian whose identity in American society was made complicated.
Shiner, a fixture in the art world for several decades, served as director of The Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh from 2010 to 2016, and as a curator there beginning in 2008. Shiner has curated dozens of contemporary art exhibitions in cities around the globe and was the team leader on The Warhol Museum’s major Warhol retrospective that traveled to Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and Tokyo between 2012 and 2014. Following that, he was a senior vice president at Sotheby’s until 2018, where he worked in private sales. He holds two Art History Master’s degrees from Osaka University and Yale.

Witte will discuss how Andy Warhol’s experience as an outsider propelled him to become one of the most famous American artists to have lived. This talk will focus on his early work as an illustrator through his later work that has undergone major critical reevaluation. Witte is the Curator of the Cleve Carney Museum of Art. He was the former exhibition manager at Columbia College Chicago and has worked at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia.

Professor of Printmaking Charles Boone will welcome a small group of 12 people into the print lab to learn how to design and print an Andy Warhol style silk screen print. During the course of the evening while the first part of the project is drying, Professor Boone will share the fundamentals and history of printmaking and Warhol’s impact on printmaking.

The exhibition will be on view beginning Oct. 7, following this summer’s blockbuster WARHOL Exhibition.
Artists from across the U.S. were invited to submit works for consideration through the CCMA’s websit and four jurors reviewed the works alongside CCMA Gallery Director & Curator, Justin Witte and Assistant Curator Julia Walker to choose works that will be exhibited.

“This exhibition provides early career artists from the community and beyond the opportunity to exhibit their work in a professional setting and to have it seen by our audience,” says Cleve Carney Museum of Art Chief Curator Justin Witte. “While the museum is focused on bringing world class exhibitions to DuPage County, we are also committed to being a platform for artists to grow their careers.”
Once is the first iteration of this exhibition at the museum since 2018. The 2018 award recipients included: Mie Kongo, who exhibited artwork at EXPO CHICAGO in 2022 and was the 2021 Joan Mitchell Fellowship award recipient; Joseph Josué Mara, who was recently named NewCity’s 2022 Breakout Artist; Carla Fisher Schwartz, who has since completed several noteworthy residencies; and Cassie Tompkins who is now the Design Director at Women Unite.
Once: 2023 Emerging Artists Exhibit is coordinated by Julia Walker, Assistant Curator at the Cleve Carney Museum of Art. The exhibition will be on view through Jan. 7, 2024.
Related Events and Programming: An opening reception will take place Oct. 7 from 5-7p.m. The award recipients will be announced at 6p.m.

This exhibition features the work of Karen Perl, Emily Rapport and Gwendolyn Zabicki. These three Chicago-based painters explore memory and discovery through their depictions of the urban landscape.
The built environment is an aspirational reflection of social self-awareness. Buildings are torn down, built up, and then torn down again. An empty lot holds space like a pause. The push to optimize our bodies, schedules, and relationships underscores the impermanence of all structures to time and calamity. In the tradition of American painters from the early 20th century who described the activities and moments that comprise daily life, the three artists represented in this proposal find beauty and meaning in everyday urban scenes.
United by their choice of materials, painters Perl, Rapport, and Zabicki follow strong individual sensibilities to delve into perceived reality and unearth a moment or interaction that, when painted, reveals an intensely present experience.

Dylan AT Miner is an artist, activist, and scholar. He holds a PhD in Arts of the Américas from The University of New Mexico. He is currently Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan. Previously, he served as Dean and Professor in the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities (RCAH) at Michigan State University. As an artist, he has hung nearly 30 solo art exhibitions, as well as participated in more than 115 group exhibitions. He is a founding member of the artist collective Justseeds. His book Creating Aztlán: Chicano Art, Indigenous Sovereignty, and Lowriding Across Turtle Island(2014) was published by the University of Arizona Press. Born and raised in Michigan, Miner is a citizen of the Métis Nation of Ontario.

Insert Coin features 15 playable arcade games that help tell the story of Midway allowing visitors to learn about this iconic company while enjoying some of their most celebrated creations.
In 1983, the video game market crashed and the first era of meteoric video game arcade popularity, defined by Space Invaders, Pac-Man, and Defender, was over. The Chicago-based manufacturers of coin-operated entertainment that had packed arcades with hits during the 1970s and 1980s, would also usher in the arcade’s renaissance in the 1990s. Known for innovative hits like Defender, Joust, and Robotron, Williams Electronics purchased the maker of Ms. Pac-Man, Tron, and Rampage – Bally Midway – in 1988 renamed its video game division Midway Manufacturing after their more recognizable former competitor. An arcade renaissance ensued. Midway became the architect of the arcade’s resurrection after the crash with a golden string of game releases such as NARC, Smash TV, Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam., Terminator 2, and Cruis’N USA.
This exhibition chronicles the stories behind these games and features behind-the-scenes video, art and ephemera from the making of these games, interviews with former Midway game designers, and the playable games themselves. Notable Williams, Bally Midway, and Midway artists and developers whose work is featured in the exhibition includes Bill Adams, Ed Boon, Brian Colin, Warren Davis, Larry DeMar, Sal Divita, George Gomez, Eugene Jarvis, Jack Haeger, George Petro, Jeff Nauman, John Newcomer, John Tobias, and Mark Turmell. Insert Coin is named after the acclaimed eponymous 2020 documentary by filmmaker and Director of Innovation at DePaul University Joshua Tsui.
This project is organized by Jonathan Kinkley, Owner and Curator, Chicago Gamespace, and Joshua Tsui in partnership with The Cleve Carney Museum of Art at the College of DuPage, with curatorial assistance by Ethan Johnson.

In conjunction with the Insert Coin exhibition at Cleve Carney Museum of Art, enjoy a special screening of the documentary, “Insert Coin,” followed by a panel discussion with key members of Midway Games featured in the documentary. “Insert Coin” is the amazing behind-the-scenes story of the making of Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam and other massive videogame hits. Through intimate and often hilarious interviews, witness how a small, tight-knit group of friends deal with controversies, next level success, and the roller coaster ride that comes with it.
The Insert Coin exhibition at Cleve Carney Museum of Art is currently on view through February 16. The exhibition chronicles the stories behind these games and features behind-the-scenes video, art and ephemera from the making of these games, interviews with former Midway game designers, and the playable games themselves.
Join Cleve Carney Museum of Art and Chicago Gamespace for a special screening of Joshua Tsui's acclaimed documentary INSERT COIN. This film, along with the current exhibition at the Cleve Carney Museum of Art, offers an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at the creation of iconic video games like Mortal Kombat and NBA Jam. Through candid and often humorous interviews, discover the untold and controversial stories behind some of the biggest hits in video game history.
Following the screening, Justin Witte will moderate a lively conversationwith filmmaker Joshua Tsui, and Midway studio art director Jack Haeger.

Andi Crist's sculptural practice is deeply influenced by her career as a professional art handler and fabricator. She works with a diverse range of media, including woodworking, ceramics, leather craft, and mold-making/casting, to explore the various roles and representations of the artist as a worker. By pairing humor and skepticism with traditional craft techniques, she critically examines the value systems within the arts economy and the underlying structures that sustain them, such as language, architecture, and social economics. The interplay of absurdity and utility in her work challenges intellectualism, reflecting a serious dedication to craftsmanship and a belief that being a “master of none is better than a master of one.” Grounded in real-world iterations, her work navigates the blurry boundaries and integral relationships between work, play, and practice. With a keen sense of self-awareness and a sardonic approach to the gallery as a neutral place, her practice incites critical examinations of contemporary industrialized studio practices. In doing so, she fosters a dialogue that questions and redefines traditional art values while acknowledging the architectural frameworks that shape creative labor. Crist was just named a Breakout Artist for 2025 by New City magazine. This lecture is free and open to the public.

Joseph Altshuler is Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign School of Architecture, and cofounder of Could Be Design, an award-winning Chicago-based design practice. His teaching, practice, and scholarship explore architecture’s capacity to build lively audiences, initiate serious play, and amplify participation in civic life. From exuberant interiors to interactive public spaces, Could Be Design positions architecture as an active character in the world, enacting a built environment full of vibrant color, shapely form, and intimate encounters. Could Be Design is a 2023 winner of the Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers, and their work has been featured at Exhibit Columbus, the Chicago Architecture Biennial, the Milwaukee Art Museum, and the Elmhurst Art Museum. Joseph also practices as a curator of contemporary architecture: Could Be Design was named a curator for the 2024-25 cycle of Exhibit Columbus, an international architecture biennial in Columbus, Indiana.

The exhibition will feature a collection of 53 works of art and 13 artifacts that has never been seen before in the U.S. More than a museum show, this arts center experience will immerse guests in Japanese Edo culture through several interactive exhibits, from a peaceful outdoor Japanese garden to an anime exhibit. The exhibition is organized by the Cleve Carney Museum of Art in collaboration with the Edoardo Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art of Genoa, Italy and with the support of MondoMostre. Hokusai is widely recognized as one of Japan's greatest artists, as he was instrumental in developing the genre of ukiyo-e and modernized traditional print styles. Widely considered as one of the most recognizable images in the world, the exhibition will feature Hokusai's iconic masterpiece, The Great Wave off Kanagawa. In addition, visitors will have the rare opportunity to view nine original works by the legendary artist. There will also be 17 works by Hiroshige and works by 15 of their contemporaries.
The exhibition is organized by the Cleve Carney Museum of Art, with works from the Edoardo Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art of Genoa, Italy that was originally collected by Edoardo Chiossone (1833-1898), whose collection is known worldwide for the quality of art and its remarkable state of conservation. The featured ukiyo-e collection on loan will be curated by professor and art historian Rossella Menegazzo of The University of Milan as part of the larger exhibition at the MAC and CCMA, curated by Justin Witte.

Tickets are now on sale. Anytime Tickets (specific date/flexible time) for “Hokusai and Ukiyo-e: The Floating World” are $40. Timed Tickets (specific date/specific time) are $27 (Tuesday-Friday) and $32 (Saturday, Sunday). VIP add-ons are also available, including the “Shogun,” which includes an exhibition poster, tote and VIP Lanyard for an additional $25; and the “Emperor,” which includes the Shogun package plus an audio tour and exhibit catalogue for an additional $70. Jordan Martins (b. 1979) is a Chicago based visual artist, curator, musician, and educator. He received his MFA in visual arts from the Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA) in Salvador, Brazil in 2007.
He is the executive director of Comfort Station, a multi-disciplinary art space in Chicago, and a lecturer in the Sculpture department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Martins’s visual work is based in collage processes, including painting, photography, video and installation. He has exhibited nationally and internationally. His work has been featured in exhibitions at Stove Works, Goldfinch, The Mission, Evanston Art Center, LVL3, The Franklin, The Museu de Arte da Bahia, Zeitgeist, and Experimental Sound Studio. He was recently featured in volume 155 of New American paintings. Martins is co-director of the Perto da Lá <> Close to There, a multidisciplinary project with international artists in Salvador, Brazil and Chicago funded by the MacArthur Foundation’s International Connections Fund.

Tali Weinberg is an internationally exhibited interdisciplinary artist and weaver. She combines plant fibers and dyes with plastics and data to explore relationships between ecological and human health.
Her work is in the collections of the Berkeley Art Museum, Denver Botanic Gardens, and Georgia Museum of Art and has been featured in the Fifth National Climate Assessment, The New York Times, Colossal, and NRDC’s onEarth Magazine, among others. She is the recipient of an Illinois Artist Fellowship, a Tulsa Artist Fellowship, and numerous residencies including at New York’s Museum of Art and Design. She holds a BA and MA from New York University and an MFA from California College of the Arts.

Thoughts on usefulness and other myths
Cleve Carney Museum of Art (CCMA) presents the first solo museum exhibition by multi-disciplinary artist Andi Crist, titled \"Live, Laugh, Labor: Thoughts on Usefulness and Other Myths,” Oct.16, 2025 – Jan. 11, 2026. An opening reception will take place from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16 with remarks from the artist.
Recently named one of Newcity’s 2025 Breakout Artists, Crist now presents her first major museum exhibition. The show features sculptures, drawings, and ceramic works from the past five years that explore the artist’s role as an arts worker.
In this upcoming exhibition, Crist’s work prompts broader questions about labor, authenticity, and the shifting recognition of human effort in society today. Drawing inspiration from her career as a professional art handler and fabricator, this exhibit navigates the boundaries and relationships between work, play, and practice.

In this solo exhibition, Crist utilizes various media, including woodworking, ceramics, leather craft, and mold-making/casting. These pieces showcase Crist’s technical skill and wit, while offering a playful perspective on the roles and representations of an artist as a worker.
In Crist’s work “Ladder” the artist has hand-crafted an a-frame ladder appears at first familiar. The work has conventional ladder rungs on one side, but the other side is abruptly shortened and terminates in two handholds carved to fit Crist’s own hands. The piece only functions when Crist physically intervenes: she straps herself to one side, holding the structure steady above her head so another person can climb. That literal dependence makes the work a wry interrogation of the “ladder” as a metaphor for upward mobility and hierarchical progress. Crist transforms a ubiquitous image of success, rungs, ranks, reaching the top, into a staged dependency: she is simultaneously the wall the ladder leans on, the support that enables advancement, and a laborer charging for her service. The work folds wordplay and labor politics together, asking who holds us up and what we pay for that support.
Andi Crist is a Chicago-based artist whose practice explores the intersections of urban environments, community and transformation. Known for her innovative use of found materials and construction techniques, Crist reimagines everyday objects and spaces, often incorporating elements of sustainability and reuse in her work. Her installations are immersive, encouraging viewers to reconsider the world around them and engage with their surroundings in new ways. Through both solo projects and collaborations with other artists, Crist’s work highlights the beauty and resilience of urban life, while challenging viewers to reflect on issues of ecology, community and collective responsibility.
Her pieces have been featured in Tiger Strikes Asteroid Chicago, Roots & Culture, and the Chicago Athletic Association. Recently, Crist was named as Newcity’s 2025 Breakout Artist’s issue. Crist graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology, where she gained her wood and fabrication knowledge while also freelancing as an art handler. In 2010, Crist founded Autotelic, a non-profit arts organization that serves artists on the northwest side of Chicago by creating affordable workspaces and exhibitions.
“Live, Laugh, Labor: Thoughts on Usefulness and Other Myths” is curated by Justin Witte, Director and Curator of the CCMA. The exhibition will be on view Oct. 16, 2025 - Jan. 11, 2026. Through a collaborative exchange of tactics and speculations, Chitty and Teague create new works that critique, absorb, reposition and remix the narratives, materials, and aesthetics of modern design while inspiring fresh modes of measuring value and utility.

Nick Satinover is an artist and educator based outside of Nashville, TN. He holds BFA and MFA degrees from Wright State University, Dayton, OH, and Illinois State University, Normal, IL, respectively. He has been an artist-in-residence at the Frans Masereel Center in Kasterlee, Belgium, Kala Artist Institute in Berkeley, CA, the Tofte Lake Center in Ely, MN, In Cahoots, Petaluma, CA, and Mass MoCA in North Adams, MA. His work has been exhibited widely nationally in solo, group and juried exhibitions. He is currently an Associate Professor of Print Media at Middle Tennessee State University where he operates Economy Island, a Risograph-based collaborative Micropublishing press. He keeps a tidy home with his partner, twin sons and rescue animals.

Norman Teague is a designer, educator, and community advocate whose practice reclaims the overlooked histories of Black labor, craft, and innovation in American design. Inspired by trailblazers like Chuck Harrison, he centers cultural memory and community engagement in projects that elevate everyday narratives. His 2024–25 MoMA solo exhibition Designer’s Choice: Jam Sessions reimagined iconic objects through generative AI and Black craft traditions, while his contribution to the 2023 U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale transformed discarded plastics into vibrant vessels inspired by Ghanaian basketry and Afro-Futurist aesthetics.
A co-founder of blkHaUS studios, Teague has completed projects across Chicago and Nigeria for clients including Solange Knowles and the MCA.
He is an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois Chicago’s School of Design and holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Teague’s collaborative work with Alex Chitty is currently on view in the Cleve Carney Museum of Art in Chair-ish: Alex Chitty | Norman Teague. This lecture is free and open to the public.

Trained as a metalsmith and enamelist, Jessica Calderwood’s art objects make statements about contemporary life using craft-based media. Since receiving her BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art and her MFA from Arizona State University, her work has been exhibited extensively throughout the U.S. and internationally. She has participated in artist residencies with the John Michael Kohler Arts/Industry Program, Ferro Corporation, Mesa Arts Center, and Pittsburgh Glass Center. Her work has also been published in Metalsmith Magazine, American Craft, and the Art of Enameling, amongst others. Work from her various series can be found in numerous collections, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Racine Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Yale University Art Gallery, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. She is currently a Professor of Art at Ball State University.

Robinson has spent over six decades documenting everything from the intensely local British football of the 1960s, to the unconventional (and now defunct) North American Soccer League, and the evolution into today’s game of billionaires and superstars. His time as the official photographer for FIFA and contributions to publications, such as Onze and Sports Illustrated, cemented his reputation as one of the leading photographers of his generation. However, what defines Robinson as an artist is his distinctive skill in storytelling, utilizing football to explore the human condition.
Through decades of change in the worlds of football and photojournalism, Robinson’s unique artistry contrasts an increasingly commercialized version of the formerly grassroots sport. His lens has stayed focused not only on the field, but also the communities at its edges. This singular perspective is why Pablo Maurer of The Athletic deemed Robinson, “Arguably the world’s greatest living soccer photographer.”
