With an artist-centered approach, the Tarble presents an annual program of rotating exhibitions that provide experiential encounters with art of international significance and local relevance. An onsite Education Lab, Design Lab, and Collection Lab are hubs for transdisciplinary activity, positioning art as a primary tool for research, advancing knowledge, and interpreting the world we live in. The outcomes of this experimentation produce projects, publications, and opportunities that reach EIU students, community members, regional partners, and international collaborators both in the museum and wherever they are. The Tarble’s ongoing stewardship of a permanent collection of contemporary art, American Regionalism, and folk art provides opportunities for study and reflection to students of all ages.

Image: Barbara Rossi, Moon Meet May, 1993, screenprint on paper. Gift of Kohler Foundation, Inc.
","location":"2010 9th St. \r\nCharleston, IL 61920","display_location":"Eastern Illinois University, 2010 9th St., Charleston, IL 61920","slug":"tarble-arts-center","latitude":"39.478532","longitude":"-88.173119","contact":"","state":"published","created_at":"2017-12-19 18:24:38","updated_at":"2026-02-24 03:13:49.323","sub_district_id":"33","promoted_at":"2018-10-24T18:34:40.342Z","optional_sort_name":"","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1736043171/eodbwt0ntw1pj6nmngw5.jpg","paid":true},"sociable_links":[{"id":4805,"address":"https://www.facebook.com/theTarble/","social_linkable_id":968,"social_linkable_type":"Organization","position":null,"kind":"Facebook","created_at":"2026-02-24 03:13:51.042","updated_at":"2026-02-24 03:13:51.042"},{"id":4806,"address":"https://www.instagram.com/thetarble/","social_linkable_id":968,"social_linkable_type":"Organization","position":null,"kind":"Instagram","created_at":"2026-02-24 03:13:51.042","updated_at":"2026-02-24 03:13:51.042"},{"id":4807,"address":"https://www.tiktok.com/@thetarble","social_linkable_id":968,"social_linkable_type":"Organization","position":null,"kind":"Generic","created_at":"2026-02-24 03:13:51.042","updated_at":"2026-02-24 03:13:51.042"}],"events":[],"pastEvents":[{"id":482,"title":"Tots 4 Tarble","starts_at":"2019-01-11 10:00:00","ends_at":"2019-01-11 11:00:00","body":"
Please join us this Friday for Tots 4 Tarble!

This week we will be reading \"The Day the Crayons Came Home\" by Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers.

We will have a hands-on activity after the book as well as some snacks.

For questions or reservations, call 217-581-ARTS (2787).
","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"tots-4-tarble","created_at":"2019-01-09 17:47:09.592723","updated_at":"2019-04-11 14:20:11.972184","excerpt":"","is_timeless":false,"organization_id":968,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'-581':53B '217':52B '2787':55B '4':2A,11B 'activ':38B 'art':54B 'book':41B 'call':51B 'came':23B 'crayon':22B 'day':20B 'daywalt':27B 'drew':26B 'friday':8B 'hand':36B 'hands-on':35B 'home':24B 'jeffer':30B 'join':5B 'oliv':29B 'pleas':4B 'question':48B 'read':18B 'reserv':50B 'snack':46B 'tarbl':3A,12B 'tot':1A,10B 'us':6B 'week':14B 'well':43B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668233/xtdqdi4tndfba7ey9zfq.gif","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669271/event_ics_1721669271063.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Youth / Families"},{"id":635,"title":"Come Wind, Come Weather","starts_at":"2019-01-26 12:00:00","ends_at":"2019-05-19 17:00:00","body":"
Brainard & eGallery

Sue de Beer is well known for her film and immersive sculptural environments, which both hold and transport viewers within and outside the frame of the artist’s lens. In Come Wind, Come Weather,de Beer has allowed the Tarble to present two of her films in concert: The Blue Lenses (2015) and The White Wolf (2018) to create a visually saturated viewing experience that harnesses the nostalgic character of place and the human desire—or even the basic instinct—to connect. This installation will take viewers on an exploration of the real and unreal, often blurring the curious boundary between specimen or the observer. De Beer’s environments become extensions of the film, as she asks viewers to not only see, but also be a part of the unfolding mysteries she creates within both works. Set in Abu Dhabi, The Blue Lenses is a two-channel film that follows a two-bit hustler and explores a young Arabic woman’s observations of his actions. Drawn from Daphne du Maurier’s short story, similarly entitled, de Beer’s The Blue Lenses presents the Middle East as a protagonist. Where based off the evidence presented by the artist, the viewers must decide what to believe or not. In de Beer's The White Wolf the artist reframes the classic tale of the werewolf as a way to present both themes of physical and psychological transformation. Juxtaposed together. both works are explorations of individual and collective memory, fact and fiction, truth, and subversion. As the spring’s signature exhibition, several programs will explore the themes presented in Come Wind, Come Weather.

Image: Sue de Beer, The White Wolf (still), 2018 Two-channel HD video © Sue de BeerImage Courtesy of the Artist & Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York and Aspen
","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"come-wind-come-weather","created_at":"2019-02-01 21:36:23.245999","updated_at":"2019-02-01 21:36:23.266073","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":968,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'2015':58B '2018':63B,286B 'abu':145B 'action':173B 'allow':44B 'also':130B 'arab':167B 'artist':33B,205B,223B,298B 'ask':123B 'aspen':305B 'base':198B 'basic':85B 'becom':116B 'beer':9B,42B,113B,185B,217B,281B 'beerimag':294B 'believ':212B 'bit':161B 'blue':56B,148B,188B 'blur':103B 'boeski':300B 'boundari':106B 'brainard':5B 'channel':154B,289B 'charact':75B 'classic':226B 'collect':252B 'come':1A,3A,37B,39B,274B,276B 'concert':54B 'connect':88B 'courtesi':295B 'creat':65B,139B 'curious':105B 'daphn':176B 'de':8B,41B,112B,184B,216B,280B,293B 'decid':209B 'desir':81B 'dhabi':146B 'drawn':174B 'du':177B 'east':193B 'egalleri':6B 'entitl':183B 'environ':19B,115B 'even':83B 'evid':201B 'exhibit':265B 'experi':70B 'explor':96B,164B,248B,269B 'extens':117B 'fact':254B 'fiction':256B 'film':15B,52B,120B,155B 'follow':157B 'frame':30B 'galleri':301B 'har':72B 'hd':290B 'hold':22B 'human':80B 'hustler':162B 'imag':278B 'immers':17B 'individu':250B 'instal':90B 'instinct':86B 'juxtapos':243B 'known':12B 'len':35B 'lens':57B,149B,189B 'mariann':299B 'maurier':178B 'memori':253B 'middl':192B 'must':208B 'mysteri':137B 'new':302B 'nostalg':74B 'observ':111B,170B 'often':102B 'outsid':28B 'part':133B 'physic':239B 'place':77B 'present':48B,190B,202B,235B,272B 'program':267B 'protagonist':196B 'psycholog':241B 'real':99B 'refram':224B 'satur':68B 'sculptur':18B 'see':128B 'set':143B 'sever':266B 'short':180B 'signatur':264B 'similar':182B 'specimen':108B 'spring':262B 'still':285B 'stori':181B 'subvers':259B 'sue':7B,279B,292B 'take':92B 'tale':227B 'tarbl':46B 'theme':237B,271B 'togeth':244B 'transform':242B 'transport':24B 'truth':257B 'two':49B,153B,160B,288B 'two-bit':159B 'two-channel':152B,287B 'unfold':136B 'unreal':101B 'video':291B 'view':69B 'viewer':25B,93B,124B,207B 'visual':67B 'way':233B 'weather':4A,40B,277B 'well':11B 'werewolf':230B 'white':61B,220B,283B 'wind':2A,38B,275B 'within':26B,140B 'wolf':62B,221B,284B 'woman':168B 'work':142B,246B 'york':303B 'young':166B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668242/fbvlvmhqdylkdby8rpop.jpg","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669278/event_ics_1721669278412.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":483,"title":"Tots 4 Tarble","starts_at":"2019-02-08 10:00:00","ends_at":"2019-02-08 11:00:00","body":"
Please join us for Tots 4 Tarble!

We will have a hands-on activity after the book as well as some snacks. Currently based out of Chicago, Fernandes’ projects address issues of race, queer culture, migration, protest, and other forms of collective movement. These projects take on hybrid forms: part ballet, part queer dance hall, part political protest. As a queer Kenyan-Indian Canadian artist, Fernandes incorporates his identity in his work to investigate ideas of transnationalism and queerness. Always looking to create new spaces and new forms of agency, these projects foster a sense of solidarity and are always rooted in collaboration. Fernandes is a graduate of the Whitney Independent Study Program (2007) and a recipient of a Robert Rauschenberg Fellowship (2014). In 2010, he was shortlisted for the Sobey Art Award, and he is the recipient of a 2017 Canada Council New Chapter grant. His projects have been shown at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (NY), the Museum of Modern Art (NY), The Getty Museum (LA), the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), and the MAC (Montreal), among a great many others. Projects in 2019 include performances and solo presentations at the Solomon R. Guggenheim (NY), the Whitney Biennial (New York), the Smithsonian Museum of American Art (WA), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), and the Noguchi Museum (NY). He is currently artist-in-residence and faculty at Northwestern University and represented by Monique Meloche Gallery in Chicago.

Norman Kelley is an architecture and design firm founded by Carrie Norman and Thomas Kelley. The practice was established in 2012 and is operated jointly between New Orleans and Chicago. The practice has contributed work to the 14th Venice Architecture Biennial (2014) and the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial (2015). The practice was a recipient of the Architecture League of New York Young Architect’s Prize (2014). Their design work, which includes a collection of American Windsor chairs, is currently represented by Volume Gallery in Chicago.

Brendan Fernandes, Tumbler Assembly Drawings (detail), 2019.

","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"brendan-fernandes-inaction","created_at":"2020-02-21 19:59:46.503359","updated_at":"2020-03-03 16:09:45.71987","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":968,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'14th':430B '1979':61B '2007':171B '2010':182B '2012':318B '2014':180B,434B,458B '2015':441B '2017':198B '2019':243B,484B 'academi':356B 'acknowledg':45B 'address':86B 'advanc':392B 'aesop':354B 'affili':349B 'agenc':147B 'alway':137B,157B 'american':264B,355B,467B 'among':236B,398B,421B 'architect':411B,455B 'architectur':302B,333B,359B,365B,432B,439B,449B 'art':17B,29B,38B,54B,78B,189B,220B,265B,271B,368B,397B 'artist':57B,69B,122B,282B 'artist-in-resid':281B 'assembl':481B 'averi':407B 'award':190B 'b':60B 'ballet':107B 'base':80B 'bc':33B 'biennial':257B,433B,440B 'brendan':58B,478B 'canada':34B,50B,199B,230B 'canadian':68B,121B 'carri':308B 'cecil':11B 'center':14B,39B 'chair':469B 'chapter':202B 'chicago':26B,83B,272B,297B,327B,364B,367B,379B,438B,477B 'client':347B 'close':346B 'co':5B 'co-organ':4B 'collabor':160B 'collect':98B,465B 'columbia':385B 'connecticut':22B 'contemporari':270B 'context':410B 'contribut':426B 'council':51B,200B 'creat':140B 'cultur':91B,413B 'current':79B,280B,471B 'danc':75B,110B 'depart':369B 'design':304B,335B,419B,460B 'detail':483B 'dezeen':415B 'domus':414B 'draw':482B 'earli':370B 'eastern':41B 'establish':316B 'examin':332B 'ezra':9B 'faculti':286B 'fellowship':179B 'fernand':59B,84B,123B,161B,479B 'fine':396B 'firm':305B 'form':96B,105B,145B 'foster':150B 'found':306B 'foundat':366B,372B,390B 'frame':417B 'galleri':13B,25B,30B,228B,295B,374B,475B 'getti':223B 'graduat':164B 'graham':389B 'grant':203B 'great':238B 'guggenheim':213B,253B 'hall':111B 'hybrid':104B 'idea':132B 'ident':126B 'illinoi':42B,377B 'inact':1A,2B 'inaugur':437B 'includ':244B,353B,463B 'incorpor':124B 'independ':168B 'indian':120B 'institut':382B 'intern':66B 'intersect':73B 'investig':131B 'issu':87B 'jersey':381B 'joint':322B 'kelley':299B,312B 'kenya':63B 'kenyan':119B 'kenyan-indian':118B 'la':225B 'leagu':360B,450B 'learn':371B 'log':406B 'look':138B,345B 'mac':234B 'magazin':412B 'mani':239B 'mas':409B 'meloch':24B,294B 'middletown':21B 'migrat':92B 'milk':420B 'modern':219B 'moniqu':23B,293B 'montreal':235B 'movement':99B 'museum':214B,217B,224B,262B,268B,276B 'nairobi':62B 'nation':227B 'new':141B,144B,201B,258B,324B,362B,380B,452B 'noguchi':275B 'norman':298B,309B 'northwestern':288B 'ny':215B,221B,254B,277B 'observ':343B 'oper':321B 'organ':6B 'orlean':325B 'other':240B,399B,422B 'ottawa':231B 'part':106B,108B,112B 'perform':245B 'polit':113B 'practic':314B,352B,401B,424B,443B 'present':248B 'prize':457B 'program':170B 'project':85B,101B,149B,205B,241B 'prompt':341B 'protest':93B,114B 'publish':404B 'queer':90B,109B,117B,136B 'r':212B,252B 'race':89B 'rauschenberg':178B 're':331B 're-examin':330B 'recipi':174B,195B,446B 'recogn':67B 'relationship':337B 'repres':291B,472B 'resid':284B 'review':408B 'richmond':28B,32B 'robert':177B 'rome':358B 'root':158B 'sens':152B 'shortlist':185B 'shown':208B 'smithsonian':261B 'sobey':188B 'solidar':154B 'solo':247B 'solomon':211B,251B 'space':142B 'studi':169B,393B 'support':47B 'take':102B 'tarbl':37B 'technolog':384B 'thoma':311B 'transnat':134B 'tumbler':480B 'univers':19B,43B,289B,375B,386B 'venic':431B 'vision':339B 'visual':77B 'volum':373B,474B 'wa':266B 'wallpap':416B 'wesleyan':18B 'whitney':167B,256B 'windsor':468B 'work':70B,129B,329B,427B,461B 'york':259B,363B,453B 'young':454B 'zilkha':12B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668336/ho18wdopqb3w77f8qodp.png","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669399/event_ics_1721669399377.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":2510,"title":"Tots 4 Tarble","starts_at":"2020-02-14 10:00:00","ends_at":"2020-02-14 11:00:00","body":"
Tarble Classroom

Join us every month for Tots 4 Tarble! In a seemingly simple white room, shattered cups and saucers are placed on a table. Participants are asked to bind the fragments together using common household items: twine, glue, scissors, and tape. The resulting creations are displayed on nearby shelves, evidence of the power of collective action. Secluded from the bustling world, Ono’s meditative environment inspires reflections on the tumultuous concerns of society, as well as personal struggles.

Conceived in the 1960s at a moment of rapid cultural transformation, this early example of participatory artwork still resonates strongly today. Mend Piece calls to mind the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-sabi, an embracing of the flawed or imperfect. For Ono, a visitors’ small act of mending holds the potential to resonate at a universal scale. With straightforward directions, the artist asks participants to let go of pretension and consider larger ideas: “Mend with wisdom/mend with love./It will mend the earth/at the same time.”

Yoko Ono’s work radically questions the division between art and the everyday, the artist and the viewer. Participating in Mend Piece (Andrea Rosen Gallery, New York City version), one experiences Ono’s unique practice both intellectually and physically.

This exhibition is organized by the American Federation of Arts (AFA). The presentation of Yoko Ono’s Mend Piece (Andrea Rosen Gallery, New York City version) is part of ArtRoom, an ongoing series of contemporary art installations organised by the AFA.

Yoko Ono, Mend Piece (Andrea Rosen Gallery, New York City version), 1966/2015, Ceramic, nontoxic glue, cello tape, scissors, and twine, Dimensions variable, Rennie Collection, Vancouver. Installation view, rennie museum, Vancouver, 2018, photographed by Blaine Campbell; courtesy Rennie Collection, Vancouver | © 2015 Yoko Ono

","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"yoko-ono-mend-piece","created_at":"2021-08-11 18:46:33.645807","updated_at":"2021-08-30 18:21:09.766036","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":968,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'./it':178B '1960s':103B '1966/2015':21B,277B '2015':305B '2018':296B 'act':28B,145B 'action':77B 'afa':235B,265B 'american':231B 'andrea':14B,208B,244B,270B 'art':195B,234B,260B 'artist':161B,200B 'artroom':254B 'artwork':116B 'ask':48B,162B 'bind':50B 'blain':299B 'bustl':81B 'call':123B 'campbel':300B 'cello':281B 'ceram':278B 'citi':19B,213B,249B,275B 'collect':76B,289B,303B 'common':55B 'communal':24B 'conceiv':100B 'concern':92B 'consid':170B 'contemporari':259B 'courtesi':301B 'creation':65B 'cultur':109B 'cup':38B 'dimens':286B 'direct':159B 'display':67B 'divis':193B 'earli':112B 'earth/at':182B 'embrac':134B 'environ':86B 'everyday':198B 'evid':71B 'exampl':113B 'exhibit':226B 'experi':216B 'feder':232B 'flaw':137B 'fragment':52B 'galleri':16B,210B,246B,272B 'glue':59B,280B 'go':166B 'heal':30B 'hold':148B 'household':56B 'icon':10B 'idea':172B 'imperfect':139B 'inspir':87B 'instal':11B,261B,291B 'intellectu':222B 'item':57B 'iter':7B 'japanes':127B 'larger':171B 'let':165B 'love':177B 'medit':85B 'mend':3A,12B,25B,121B,147B,173B,180B,206B,242B,268B 'mind':125B 'moment':106B 'museum':294B 'nearbi':69B 'new':17B,211B,247B,273B 'nontox':279B 'one':215B 'ongo':256B 'ono':2A,22B,83B,141B,187B,217B,240B,267B,307B 'organ':228B 'organis':262B 'part':252B 'particip':46B,163B,204B 'participatori':115B 'person':98B 'philosophi':128B 'photograph':297B 'physic':224B 'piec':4A,13B,122B,207B,243B,269B 'place':42B 'potenti':150B 'power':74B 'practic':220B 'present':237B 'pretens':168B 'propos':23B 'question':191B 'radic':190B 'rapid':108B 'reflect':88B 'renni':288B,293B,302B 'reson':118B,152B 'result':64B 'room':36B 'rosen':15B,209B,245B,271B 'sabi':132B 'saucer':40B 'scale':156B 'scissor':60B,283B 'seclud':78B 'seem':33B 'seri':257B 'shatter':37B 'shelv':70B 'simpl':34B 'small':144B 'societi':94B 'still':117B 'straightforward':158B 'strong':119B 'struggl':99B 'tabl':45B 'tape':62B,282B 'time':185B 'today':120B 'togeth':53B 'transform':110B 'tumultu':91B 'twine':58B,285B 'uniqu':219B 'univers':155B 'use':54B 'vancouv':290B,295B,304B 'variabl':287B 'version':20B,214B,250B,276B 'view':292B 'viewer':203B 'visitor':143B 'wabi':131B 'wabi-sabi':130B 'well':96B 'white':35B 'wisdom/mend':175B 'work':189B 'world':82B 'yoko':1A,186B,239B,266B,306B 'york':18B,212B,248B,274B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668520/t3ocnghw2po1vfl2rpxi.png","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669580/event_ics_1721669579925.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":8225,"title":"Force Majeure","starts_at":"2021-09-24 12:00:00","ends_at":"2021-12-04 12:00:00","body":"
Hannah Black, micha cárdenas, Shirin Neshat, Pipilotti Rist, Janaina Tschäpe, and Carrie Mae Weems

This exhibition traces the history of video and technology as media for the voices of feminist discourse from second- to third- and fourth-wave aesthetics and strategies. Focused on a variety of themes, including folk art, regionalism, and the American working class, the artwork is significant as a distinct movement in the long history of the development of art. Furthermore, the story behind each piece offers insight into the artist, the historical moment they represent, and a budding artistic movement, as well as the political and economic realities of the era.

Guided by Assistant Professor Dr. Camden Burd, students enrolled in the Department of History’s Public History Practicum selected, researched, and examined the unique holdings of the Tarble Arts Center to design a compelling exhibit for the broader public. Students received hands-on experience by researching works in the Tarble’s permanent collection, working with Tarble staff on curatorial methodologies, and facilitating relationships with community partners to share, promote, and exhibit their work. that has become degraded over the past forty years by the growth of intricate bald cypress root systems. The proposal would see these hardscapes demolished and processed into new concrete for a reimagined configuration. Reflecting the original design of the museum’s architecture in playful ways, this artwork will create more area for the Tarble’s cypress trees to flourish while supporting native plants and pollinators while also creating a platform for people to visit, rest, read, play, exercise, and participate in future Tarble programs.

While this large-scale project continues to develop, the Tarble has installed a nineteen-by-four-foot model of the proposed artwork in our galleries to help visitors imagine the new landscape that it will introduce. Young visitors and their caretakers are invited to play gently with the model in this gallery along with special edition toys and books by the Italian modernist designer Enzo Mari.
