Amina has shown work at the Black Cinema House, Woman Made Gallery, Vox Populi, Links Hall and Defibrillator Performance Art Gallery. Amina has spoken on panels and taught workshops at College Arts Association Conference, Allied Media Conference, Black Artist Retreat, Threewalls and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Amina is committed to creating spaces that foster thinking, conversation, growth, and love. These ambitions manifested in the founding of 3rd Language, queer arts collective; which has received the Propeller Fund grant and Davis Foundation awards for its summer workshops series. They became catalysts for nationwide change, beginning by empowering local communities with free food programs, clinics, community newspapers, and neighborhood patrols against police brutality. In recognition of one of the most influential political movements in the past century, this exhibition will be taking place in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the Black Panther Party’s Illinois chapter. The heartland exhibition of ICONIC: Black Panther will feature a mix of local emerging and established artists, as well as internationally renowned artists like Emory Douglas, Dr. Samella Lewis, Rashayla Marie Brown, and Amanda Williams.

For show producer Rosalind McGary, ICONIC: Black Panther is a way of cataloguing and archiving the continued legacy of this social justice and political movement. \"The Black Panthers were phenomenal,” says McGary. “These young people created over 20 needed survival programs all while protecting their communities against predatory policing. We are fortunate to have created a vehicle like ICONIC for acknowledging their contribution to this country’s history, and for how they inspired oppressed people the world over. ICONIC: Black Panther makes room for courageous dialogue around our current circumstances, helps us learn from the successes and mistakes of our elders, and allows artists the honor of participating in caring for them now.\"

Image: Father, Son, Remixed, Emory Douglas
","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"iconic-black-panther","created_at":"2018-10-22 20:44:47.003878","updated_at":"2019-01-03 20:15:57.489976","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":888,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'10pm':10B '2':7B '20':230B '2016':66B '50':12B '50th':148B '7':9B 'acknowledg':253B 'aggress':21B 'ago':14B 'alik':94B 'allow':295B 'amanda':191B 'america':26B 'american':81B 'angel':102B 'anniversari':149B 'announc':108B 'archiv':207B 'around':38B,279B 'art':119B 'artist':93B,174B,180B,296B 'bank':120B 'becam':42B 'begin':47B 'black':2A,24B,28B,68B,77B,114B,152B,163B,199B,219B,272B 'brown':189B 'brutal':64B 'build':33B 'care':302B 'catalogu':205B 'catalyst':43B 'celebr':72B 'centuri':137B 'chang':46B 'chapter':157B 'chicago':122B 'circumst':282B 'clinic':56B 'collect':104B 'communiti':51B,57B,238B 'conjunct':145B 'continu':209B 'contribut':255B 'countri':258B 'courag':277B 'creat':228B,247B 'current':281B 'dialogu':278B 'dougla':183B,311B 'dr':184B 'elder':293B 'emerg':90B,171B 'emori':182B,310B 'empow':49B 'equal':34B 'establish':173B 'exhibit':97B,111B,139B,160B 'father':307B 'featur':89B,166B 'follow':95B 'food':54B 'form':31B 'fortun':244B 'free':53B 'groundbreak':96B 'group':87B 'heartland':159B 'help':283B 'histori':82B,260B 'honor':298B 'icon':1A,67B,113B,162B,198B,251B,271B 'il':123B 'illinoi':156B 'imag':306B 'influenti':131B 'inspir':265B 'intern':178B 'interpret':83B 'island':118B 'justic':214B 'learn':285B 'legaci':74B,210B 'legendari':92B 'lewi':186B 'like':181B,250B 'local':50B,170B 'los':101B 'make':274B 'margin':22B 'mari':188B 'mcgari':197B,224B 'mistak':290B 'mix':168B 'movement':133B,217B 'nationwid':45B 'need':231B 'neighborhood':60B 'newspap':58B 'novemb':6B 'oakland':99B 'one':127B 'open':4B 'oppress':36B,266B 'panther':3A,29B,69B,78B,115B,153B,164B,200B,220B,273B 'parti':30B,79B,154B 'particip':300B 'past':136B 'patrol':61B 'peopl':37B,227B,267B 'phenomen':222B 'place':143B 'polic':63B,241B 'polit':132B,216B 'pop':85B 'predatori':240B 'produc':195B 'program':55B,233B 'protect':236B 'racism':18B 'rashayla':187B 'recept':5B 'recognit':125B 'remix':309B 'renown':179B 'respons':16B 'room':275B 'rosalind':196B 'samella':185B 'say':223B 'sepia':103B 'show':88B,194B 'sinc':65B 'social':213B 'son':308B 'stoni':117B 'success':288B 'surviv':232B 'take':142B 'third':110B 'thrill':106B 'us':284B 'vehicl':249B 'way':203B 'well':176B 'william':192B 'world':40B,269B 'year':13B 'young':226B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668462/lkg8j2sxjamq5quiid00.jpg","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669527/event_ics_1721669527280.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":906,"title":"American Dreams: A Raisin in the Sun 60th Anniversary Screening","starts_at":"2019-03-24 14:00:00","ends_at":"2019-03-24 16:00:00","body":"
In honor of the 60th anniversary of Lorraine Hansberry’s immortal A Raisin in the Sun’s Broadway debut, please join Arts Bank Cinema for a screening & conversation of the 1961 film adaption, hosted by Ashley Cooper .

A Raisin in the Sun is a deeply resonant tale of dreams deferred. Instead of providing salvation, the money causes intense disagreements over what should be done with it. We Want Decent Housing, Fit for the Shelter of Human Beings.

Arts Bank Cinema is proud to present the BPP Ten Point Program Film Series, hosted the first Sunday of each month in partnership with members of the IL Chapter of the Black Panther Party. Each month’s program will use cinema and dialogue to explore one point of the Black Panther Party’s ten point platform. Facilitated community discussions centering activism, resistance, and the ongoing struggle will be held following the films. For April, we explore point four, “We Want Decent Housing, Fit for the Shelter of Human Beings.” through the Chicago film THE AREA.

THE AREA is the five-year odyssey of a South Side Chicago neighborhood, where more than 400 African-American families are displaced by a multi-billion-dollar railroad corporation. The film follows homeowner-turned-activist Deborah Payne and the “Row-Row Boys” a group of teen friends who must start a new life across gang lines.

The story is a visceral representation of corporate abuse, government overreach, and the vulnerability of homeowners, but the battle Deborah wages against the railroad also reveals the strength of a community.

This event is free and open to the public, RSVP here. I did not want to highlight big moments – moments like the signing of the Affordable Care Act, the Iran Nuclear Deal, or the capture of Osama bin Laden – I wanted to depict a very measured, intellectual, capable statesman who showed up to work everyday and led; a leader with a long list of accomplishments we, as a nation, would be proud of.” – Rob Pruitt

Rob Pruitt began The Obama Paintings as a means of recording, and through recording, honoring, Barack Obama’s historic presidency. Beginning with the inauguration on January 20, 2009, each morning Pruitt created a two-foot-by-two-foot painting of President Obama, with particular imagery drawn from news of the day. The work was completed on January 20, 2017, Obama’s last day in office, and is comprised of 2,922 individual paintings.

The process for creating each work in The Obama Paintings was the same: a canvas was covered in a spectrum of red to blue; once an image was selected, often for its aesthetic qualities and composition, Pruitt painted it in white expressionist brushstrokes onto the background. This meditative process is further emphasized by the installation of the unframed works in a non-chronological, seamless grid. The expansive work incorporates the full scope of Obama’s presidency, from such seminal events as his first State of the Union address to seemingly mundane activities such as walking the dog or spending time with his family. Each canvas is given equal importance, regardless of the traditional metrics of newsworthiness of the moment it depicts.

Rob Pruitt’s The Obama Paintings serves as a monument in and of itself, as well as an examination of presidential monuments in general. The work considers the dissemination of images of past presidents and how they function in our society. The Obama Paintings is intended to be seen as a full picture of Obama’s two terms in office, presented not in chronological order, but rather as an integrated picture of the entire presidency.

OPENING WEEKEND EVENTS for THE OBAMA PAINTINGS

Opening Reception | April 18, 7:00pm – 9:00pm

Family Portrait Drawing Workshop with Rob Pruitt | April 19, 3:00pm – 5:00pm

Artist Talk: Rob Pruitt with Louise Bernard and Theaster Gates | April 20, 1:00pm – 3:00pm

Arts Bank Cinema presents SOUTHSIDE WITH YOU | April 20, 4:00pm – 6:00pm

","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"the-obama-paintings","created_at":"2019-03-22 20:35:36.10433","updated_at":"2019-04-18 16:07:59.995965","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":888,"highlighted":true,"opening_starts_at":"2019-04-18 19:00:00","opening_ends_at":"2019-04-18 21:00:00","searchable":"'00pm':371B,373B,384B,386B,400B,402B,413B,415B '1':399B '18':369B '19':382B '2':158B '20':114B,146B,398B,411B '2009':115B '2017':147B '3':383B,401B '4':412B '5':385B '6':414B '7':370B '9':372B '922':159B 'accomplish':77B 'act':40B 'activ':254B 'address':250B 'aesthet':194B 'afford':38B 'april':368B,381B,397B,410B 'art':403B 'artist':387B 'background':207B 'bank':404B 'barack':103B 'began':90B 'begin':108B 'bernard':393B 'big':30B 'bin':50B 'blue':185B 'brushstrok':204B 'canva':176B,267B 'capabl':60B 'captur':47B 'care':39B 'chronolog':225B,347B 'cinema':405B 'complet':143B 'composit':197B 'compris':156B 'consid':310B 'cover':178B 'creat':119B,165B 'day':139B,151B 'deal':44B 'depict':55B,283B 'dissemin':312B 'dog':259B 'draw':376B 'drawn':134B 'emphas':213B 'end':6B 'entir':357B 'equal':270B 'event':242B,361B 'everybodi':10B 'everyday':67B 'examin':302B 'expans':229B 'expressionist':203B 'famili':265B,374B 'figur':15B 'first':245B 'foot':123B,126B 'full':233B,335B 'function':321B 'gate':396B 'general':307B 'given':269B 'grid':227B 'highlight':29B 'histor':106B 'honor':102B 'imag':188B,314B 'imageri':133B 'import':271B 'inaugur':111B 'incorpor':231B 'individu':160B 'instal':216B 'integr':353B 'intellectu':59B 'intend':329B 'iran':42B 'januari':113B,145B 'laden':51B 'last':150B 'leader':71B 'led':69B 'legaci':21B 'like':33B 'list':75B 'long':74B 'louis':392B 'mean':96B 'measur':58B 'medit':209B 'metric':276B 'moment':31B,32B,281B 'monument':293B,305B 'morn':117B 'mundan':253B 'nation':81B 'news':136B 'newsworthi':278B 'non':224B 'non-chronolog':223B 'nuclear':43B 'obama':2A,92B,104B,130B,148B,170B,236B,288B,326B,338B,364B 'offic':153B,343B 'often':191B 'onto':205B 'open':359B,366B 'order':348B 'osama':49B 'paint':3A,93B,127B,161B,171B,199B,289B,327B,365B 'particular':132B 'past':316B 'pictur':336B,354B 'portrait':375B 'present':344B,406B 'presid':9B,19B,107B,129B,238B,317B,358B 'presidenti':304B 'process':163B,210B 'proud':84B 'pruitt':87B,89B,118B,198B,285B,380B,390B 'qualiti':195B 'rather':350B 'recept':367B 'record':98B,101B 'red':183B 'regardless':272B 'rob':86B,88B,284B,379B,389B 'scope':234B 'scurri':11B 'seamless':226B 'seem':252B 'seen':332B 'select':190B 'semin':241B 'serv':290B 'show':63B 'sign':35B 'societi':324B 'southsid':407B 'spectrum':181B 'spend':261B 'state':246B 'statesman':61B 'talk':388B 'term':341B 'theaster':395B 'time':262B 'tradit':275B 'tri':13B 'two':122B,125B,340B 'two-foot-by-two-foot':121B 'unfram':219B 'union':249B 'walk':257B 'want':27B,53B 'weekend':360B 'well':299B 'white':202B 'work':66B,141B,167B,220B,230B,309B 'workshop':377B 'would':82B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668250/idfba9a2yajzgfwo4djz.jpg","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669287/event_ics_1721669287373.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":1080,"title":"Family Portrait Drawing Workshop with Rob Pruitt","starts_at":"2019-04-19 15:00:00","ends_at":"2019-04-19 17:00:00","body":"
Rob Pruitt began The Obama Paintings as a means of recording Barack Obama’s presidency. Breaking the fourth wall, cast members enact the script differently in each performance as members of the audience are invited not only to behold the piece as spectators, but to become part of the current that holds the story together.

For ticketing information, click here.

Learn More

Artwork: Jamie Melton.

","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"what-to-send-up-when-it-goes-down-b274e4cb-f6a5-4e67-9f5e-fd7369a349ea","created_at":"2022-02-25 14:39:23.128132","updated_at":"2024-06-06 19:43:49.184308","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":888,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'1':80B '16':65B '2022':66B,81B '2044':56B '21':77B '31':62B 'acclaim':38B 'aleshea':45B 'april':64B,76B 'art':73B 'artwork':228B 'audienc':131B,198B 'avenu':59B 'award':42B 'award-win':41B 'b':46B 'bank':74B 'becom':211B 'behold':204B 'black':105B,129B 'black-identifi':128B 'break':181B 'carrol':58B 'cast':185B 'catharsi':156B 'celebr':90B 'chicago':25B,55B 'cleans':157B 'click':224B 'collect':155B 'compani':12B 'congo':9B 'creat':124B,152B 'critic':37B 'current':215B 'describ':82B 'dialogu':180B 'differ':190B 'discours':109B 'employ':169B 'enabl':111B 'enact':187B 'experi':149B 'facilit':179B 'form':173B 'foundat':18B,69B 'fourth':183B 'gate':15B 'goe':7A,34B,97B,143B 'gratuit':102B 'gray':8B,54B 'harri':47B 'heal':159B 'hold':217B 'homego':89B 'identifi':130B 'includ':174B 'inform':223B 'intend':122B 'intent':150B 'interrupt':108B 'invit':200B 'island':72B 'jami':229B 'joint':22B 'learn':226B 'live':106B 'loss':103B 'march':61B 'may':79B 'melton':230B 'member':132B,186B,195B 'movement':177B 'pageant':87B 'parodi':175B 'part':212B 'participatori':147B 'perform':49B,161B,193B 'piec':206B 'play':39B,86B,121B 'play-pageant-ritual-homego':85B 'playwright':44B 'premier':26B 'present':23B,52B 'proud':20B 'racial':115B 'rebuild':17B,68B 'respond':99B 'ritual':88B 'script':189B 'send':3A,30B,93B,139B 'seri':165B 'shapeshift':148B 'societi':119B 'song':176B 'space':126B,153B 'spectat':208B 'squar':10B 'stoni':71B 'stori':219B 'theaster':14B 'theatr':11B 'ticket':222B 'togeth':220B 'ubiqu':113B 'unfold':162B 'varieti':171B 'vignett':167B 'violenc':116B 'wall':184B 'welcom':136B 'west':57B 'win':43B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668545/iwt6qxvv9waoulyyc1kb.jpg","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669605/event_ics_1721669605232.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Performance"},{"id":14317,"title":"Theaster Gates | When Clouds Roll Away","starts_at":"2024-09-12 12:00:00","ends_at":"2025-03-16 12:00:00","body":"
Over the last nine years, artist Theaster Gates has been the steward of the Johnson Publishing Company’s ephemera, periodicals, furniture, inventory, and architectural fragments originally housed at the Johnson Publishing Company building on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. The devices for the interrogation of these objects and their permission to be public have created one of the most fascinating mazes of artistic repertoire among contemporary practices. For his Art Design Chicago exhibition, Gates uses his most noted architectural site, The Stony Island Arts Bank, as a space for deep contemplation on the life of Black objects and Black archives. Pulling from his personal archive of Johnson’s architectural fittings and furniture, Gates makes available newly restored objects, everyday office furniture, and works of art owned by John H. Johnson to give insight into the publisher’s artistic practice and one of the most formidable Black companies to have ever existed—the Johnson Publishing Company.

Through this exhibition, the artist hopes to show the responsibility of and urgency for cultural leaders to preserve and create continued access to our cultural treasures. Gates’ reflections on the Johnson legacy are a simple demonstration of what archival and collective care might look like. The Stony Island Arts Bank, the cornerstone of Theaster Gates’s Rebuild Foundation, is temporarily turned to Johnson as a portal for public memory, new conceptual questions, and the archive as a launching pad for new artistic production.

Image: Isaac Sutton, Johnson Publishing Company Archive, courtesy of Ford Foundation, J.
