SCA programs and events offer this insight to participants through accessing artists, leading critics, historians, curators, dealers, distinguished private collections, and major art destinations within the United States and abroad. The SCA also has made a substantial contribution to the museum’s collection and presentations of contemporary art through its acquisitions, special initiatives, and exhibition support. In 2017, the SCA Engagement Fund was established to lend financial support to select Art Institute of Chicago initiatives related to contemporary art. She writes, “I mine the histories of geometric and hard-edge abstraction and pop art; and I reconfigure them through strategies of appropriation and references to both living bodies and seductive objects. Through the use of unusual materials, software tools, and innovative fabrication techniques, his enigmatic paintings and sculptures explore and manifest poetic new ways to engage and reimagine the human body. Much of the artist’s work has attempted to convey the changing cognitive and physical effects of an embodied technology. Hsu’s interest in technology has not been in the use of a particular apparatus but the perception of a technological affect. His work has included drawings, paintings, interactive digital media projections, and sculpture.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Hsu received his B.S.A.D in 1973 and M.Arch in 1975 from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While at MIT, he also studied film and photography at the Carpenter Center, Harvard University. Since 1985, Hsu has shown extensively in the US, Europe, Mexico and Asia, with works in many public and private collections. Hsu’s survey exhibition, Liquid Circuit, opened at SculptureCenter in 2020, following its first iteration at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. In 2021, his work was included in the 13th Gwangju Biennale, Minds Rising, Spirits Tuning; TECHNO at Museion, Bolzano, Italy; Zeros + Ones at KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin. In 2022, his work was included in the 59th Venice Biennale: The Milk of Dreams, and in the 58th Carnegie International, Pittsburgh: Is it morning for you yet? His recent work was on view at the Secession, Vienna during winter 2023/2024; and his first European survey exhibition was held at MAMCO, Geneva.

DINNER

Join us for dinner with the artist following the program at Sushi San in the heart of Lincoln Park. She works primarily in painting and she often intervenes in the spaces where she exhibits, staging the paintings with readymades, sculptures, and architectural installations, exploring themes of memory, transformation, and the power of history. In her work, references to historical painting are put into communication with images taken from both popular culture and personal life, creating an anachronic feeling of merged and frictional temporalities. Her practice shifts between close observations of everyday reality and highly elaborated imaginary worlds. These paintings can be seen as allegories for the contemporary experience of the image as an interface: not just a picture but a means of mobilizing attention, bodies and affects within an increasingly virtualized social space.

She has had solo exhibitions at Sant'Andrea de Scaphis, Rome (2024); LUMA Arles, France (2024); Gladstone Gallery, New York (2022); Le Consortium, Dijon (2021); Gladstone Gallery, Brussels (2020); Swiss Institute, New York (2019); Galerie Neu, Berlin (2018); Schloss, Oslo (2018); Kunsthalle Bern (2017); and Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Naples (2015). In 2024, Jill Mulleady and Henry Taylor had a two-person show You Me at Schinkel Pavillon in Berlin. She has also been involved in two biennales; Made in L.A. 2020: a version at the Hammer Museum in 2021 and May You Live in Interesting Times at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019.

2025 SCA Public Programming is made possible with generous support from PRADA.
","type":null,"state":"published","slug":"artist-talk-jill-mulleady","created_at":"2025-11-19 22:57:54.03","updated_at":"2025-11-19 22:57:54.03","excerpt":"","is_timeless":false,"organization_id":188,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'00pm':10B,12B,67B '06':9B '07':11B,64B '10':66B '111':19B '125.00':57B '17':7B,62B '1980':82B '2015':256B '2017':250B '2018':244B,247B '2019':240B,310B '2020':235B,288B '2021':231B,296B '2022':227B '2024':218B,222B,258B '2025':8B,63B,311B '30pm':65B '435':68B '58th':306B '60603':25B '60654':74B 'affect':200B 'allegori':177B 'also':279B 'anachron':150B 'andrea':214B 'angel':90B 'anyon':29B 'archeologico':253B 'architectur':115B 'arl':220B 'art':15B 'artist':1A,78B 'attent':197B 'avenu':22B 'b':81B 'berlin':243B,276B 'bern':249B 'biennal':284B,308B 'bodi':198B 'brussel':234B 'chicago':18B,23B,72B 'clark':70B 'close':161B 'communic':137B 'consortium':229B 'contemporari':180B 'creat':148B 'cultur':144B 'dash':53B 'de':215B 'dijon':230B 'dinner':45B 'dot':50B 'elabor':168B 'event':32B 'everyday':164B 'exhibit':107B,211B 'experi':181B 'explor':117B 'feel':151B 'franc':221B 'free':27B 'friction':155B 'fullerton':13B 'galeri':241B 'galleri':224B,233B 'generous':319B 'gladston':223B,232B 'hall':14B 'hammer':293B 'henri':262B 'high':167B 'histor':132B 'histori':126B 'il':24B,73B 'imag':139B,184B 'imaginari':169B 'increas':203B 'instal':116B 'institut':16B,237B 'interest':302B 'interfac':187B 'interven':101B 'invit':39B 'involv':281B 'jill':3A,42B,79B,259B 'join':41B 'kunsthall':248B 'l.a':287B 'le':228B 'lectur':35B 'life':147B 'live':85B,300B 'los':89B 'luma':219B 'made':285B,316B 'map':26B,75B 'may':298B 'mean':194B 'member':37B,59B 'memori':120B 'merg':153B 'michigan':21B 'mobil':196B 'monday':5B,60B 'montevideo':83B 'mulleadi':4A,80B,260B 'museo':252B 'museum':294B 'n':69B 'napl':255B 'nazional':254B 'neu':242B 'new':225B,238B 'north':56B 'nov':6B,61B 'observ':162B 'often':100B 'oslo':246B 'paint':97B,110B,133B,172B 'pari':92B 'pavillon':274B 'person':146B,268B 'pictur':191B 'popular':143B 'possibl':317B 'power':124B 'practic':158B 'prada':322B 'primarili':95B 'program':314B 'public':313B 'put':135B 'readymad':112B 'realiti':165B 'recept':47B 'refer':130B 'regist':30B 'river':55B 'rome':217B 'sant':213B 'sca':36B,312B 'scaphi':216B 'schinkel':273B 'schloss':245B 'sculptur':113B 'seen':175B 'shift':159B 'show':269B 'social':205B 'solo':210B 'space':104B,206B 'st':71B 'stage':108B 'support':320B 'swiss':236B 'taken':140B 'talk':2A 'taylor':263B 'tempor':156B 'theme':118B 'three':49B 'time':303B 'transform':121B 'two':267B,283B 'two-person':266B 'uruguay':84B 'venic':307B 'version':290B 'virtual':204B 'within':201B 'work':87B,94B,129B 'world':170B 'york':226B,239B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1758766038/g04psy1gqdke8ysbxrz1.jpg","calendar":null,"carousel":false,"category_name":"Talks"},{"id":31827,"title":"SCA Public Program: Josh Kline","starts_at":"2026-05-27 18:00:00","ends_at":"2026-05-27 19:00:00","body":"
ABOUT THE ARTIST

Josh Kline (b. 1979, Philadelphia, USA) works in installation, video, sculpture, and photography. His work questions how emergent technologies are being used to change human life in the 21st Century. He often utilizes the technologies, practices, and forms he scrutinizes—digitization, data collection, image manipulation, 3D-printing, commercial and political advertising, productivity-enhancing substances—aiming them back at themselves. Some of his most well-known videos use early deep fake software to speculate on the meaning of truth in a time of post-truth propaganda. At its core, Kline’s practice is focused on work and class, exploring how today’s most urgent social and political issues—climate change, automation, disease, and the weakening of democracy—impact the people who make up the labor force.

Details

Artist Lecture

Wednesday, May 27, 2026 06:00pm – 07:00pm

Fullerton Hall, Art Institute of Chicago, 111 S.
