During the first year of Covid, the egg became a personal symbol for me, of both fragility and survival. Many think our very existence came from a “cosmic egg.” The tapered oval represents new life, fertility, resurrection, regeneration, hope, purity, and in one shell both strength and fragility. The egg and its many symbols continues to intrigue me and its investigation has become part of this exhibition with many works included that explore its many meanings.

This group of five paintings, on view at Rosenthal Fine Art from September 9th through October 13th, are perfect examples of illusionism-shattering flatness. The third dimension is present, but in an ambiguous, even paradoxical way. The squares and rectangles are made up of strips that overlap, going over and under each other. Colors seem to oscillate back and forth, each seeming to be in front for a moment and then recede to allow the other to come forward.
The “Knots” may also suggest labyrinths which historically functioned as cosmic diagrams and could be seen as objects for mystical contemplation. Anuszkiewicz’ mathematical approach, his deep quest to understand the nature of color and its interaction of forms combine to create a masterful last series.

Dimitri Hadzi (1921-2006) is among the most distinguished sculptors of the 20th century. He is the last American modernist. His work is characterized by its unique ability to merge themes and traditions from ancient Hellenic culture–language and attitudes, mythology and theater–with 20th century tenets of Modernism, Surrealism, and Expressionism. While Hadzi's work presents itself in formalist terms, it always remains rooted in meaning drawn from his Greek heritage.
\"Dimitri Hadzi's sculptures have the deeply satisfactory, self-sufficiency of all finished work. They do the paradoxical things which the best sculptural forms do...I value Dimitri's oeuvre because of its nice combination of confidence and impersonality, muscle and nimbleness, historical echo and original forthrightness, its excellence on the largest and smallest scales. I value it because I know from looking at it and from observing its maker that it springs from a proverbial need which acts as a kind of sweet torment until it finds its release and equivalent in the silent adequacy of the sculptures themselves.\"

Hunt SLONEM'S obsessive and repetitive rendering of his subjects reflects his desire to explore issues of spatial complexity, compression and density in what the acclaimed Metropolitan Museum of Art curator Henry Geldzahler deemed \"a consistent investigation of post-cubist abstraction.\"
The repetitive imagery also makes a reference to Andy Warhol. \"I was influenced by Warhol's repetition of soup cans and Marilyn,\" says Slonem. \"But I'm more interested in doing it in the sense of prayer, with repetition... It's really a form of worship.\"
Slonem is not interested in realism or, unlike Warhol, in advertising or media, and his paintings are neither narrative nor specific in detail. Rather, Slonem's work is deeply rooted in the act of painting. His jarring color choices, spontaneous mark making, and scratched hatch marks are the result of his ongoing fascination with the manipulation and implementation of paint.
For Slonem, cross-hatching has \"a feeling of a tapestry, it's like weaving. I'm making colors bleed into each other, I'm revealing the under-painting. I'm making these marks to allow the light to come through, basically. So you're seeing about five levels of paint, instead of one.\"

When we get a little closer to the works of Yücel Dönmez, we see elements of traditional Turkish art forms such as Ottoman calligraphy, Tura (signature of the sultan on Ottoman calligraphy), decorative art, ornamentation and above all, traditional Turkish marbling and weaving.
Dönmez's Butterflies present an example of contemporary Turkish painting by masterfully mixing his own culture with the contemporary synthesis of the West.
Rosenthal Fine Art is pleased to present the artist's recent works.
Dönmez's works can be found in private collections, museums and public spaces around the world. Throughout his career, he has created works
for the University of Chicago, Chicago's Grant Park Land Art in 1993 and most recently, at Contemporary Istanbul.
Yücel Dönmez was born in 1946 in Kars,Turkey.
He currently lives in Chicago and Istanbul.

Every once in a while, a gallerist has the good fortune to connect with someone who “speaks” to you through knowledge, elegance and skill with a purity and simplicity that is transcendent... Angel Haro is that for us.
When we first saw Haro's paintings, we were taken by his sense of humanity, with a purity in vision through composition and fearless gestures in his work.
And that's because Haro creates from a vision of the reality around him. He feels his environment and then expresses it. This expressiveness is about movement and emotion.
For example, color takes on feelings and the abstractions become visual narratives. Simply put, he brings a subtle interpretation to the work that challenges the eye into feeling there's something more to be seen.
Because of the evocative nature of his work, the gestural, technical characteristics are secondary to his central objective: to place the viewer in the artist's experiential space.
Yet, he doesn't overlook the technical either. The simplicity of Haro’s abstractions take on a true understanding of paint, space and his ability to express the human experience on canvas -- or paper -- that is pure and powerful.

In this new body of work, the artist questions what place is there of such fiercely analog work in a mechanized, mass-produced, digital world? What is the value of a painting painstakingly constructed over time when anyone can capture an image instantly with a phone and further heighten its reality through manipulation?
In his recent artist's statement Wojtkiewicz talks about his process:
I focus primarily on how light interacts with the diverse surfaces of natural forms—forms that exist at the boundary of biology and sensuality, carrying within them an erotic charge tied to their fertility and ephemerality.
The close-up, intimate vantage points I choose liberate these forms from mere depiction, pressing them toward abstraction, toward rhythm, pattern, and texture. They surrender to the idea that representation itself is an unreliable illusion, asking the viewer to engage the paintings not just as signs pointing to recognizable objects but as vivid, sensual encounters—experiences accountable only to their own internal logic.
Finally Wojtkiewicz invites us to experience the work:
Ultimately, my paintings are about attention and presence. They reimagine biology's fleeting moments of beauty as luminous icons, asking us not only to contemplate impermanence but also to celebrate the act of looking itself—the possibility of finding, again and again, that moment of discovery where craft, vision, and wonder converge.

Rosenthal Fine Art is pleased to present eleven glorious paintings as a retrospective of Raffael's later works from1985 to 2020 -- the year before his death in 2021.
In an interview with Betsy Dillard Stroud, Raffael reveals his process as almost a conversation with mystery. Nancy Hoffman, a well-respected New York dealer who knew Raffael well, was asked by Stroud how she would place Raffael in the contemporary art scene.
She replied: \"I don't think about him in the contemporary scene. It's not a relevant question, because he addresses the issue of beauty. He celebrates nature and stays true to his vision. No one uses watercolor the way he does.\"
Clearly, Joseph Raffael transcends labeling, which underscores what Kierkegaard wrote: \"Labeling me, negates me.\"
As Betsy Dillard Stroud left Joseph Raffael's world she recalls, \"When I think of Raffael's paintings, forms dissolve revealing a new universe of light charged with a confluence of incredible colors perhaps not found in anyone's vocabulary, and I remember what the great theologian Thomas Merton wrote: \"The last great mystery to be solved will be the mystery of color.\"
Surely, the answer to that mystery lies in the paintings of Joseph Raffael as he moves toward the light.
