Highlighting color-based, geometric, and perceptual experiments, this selection of works from the Carl & Marilynn Thoma Art Foundation Collection includes an international group of 33 artists associated with some of the key painting movements of the mid-20th century: Color Field, Post-Painterly Abstraction, Hard-Edge, and Op Art. Bold Abstractions at Rockford Art Museum marks the first time the Thoma’s significant post-war painting collection has been shown at a public institution.

No matter their stylistic, geographic, or conceptual affiliation, artists in the Thoma Collection are unified in their inventive use of bold colors, their limitless investigations into the effects of chromatic relationships, the immediacy of their paintings, and their intention to develop active relationships between the artwork and the observer. Some of the artists developed new techniques involving staining diluted paint right into the raw canvas while others preferred the precision of hard-edged shapes and overall, repetitive patterns that suggested movement and instability. Others worked with shaped canvases to explore the relationship between painting and object. The development of acrylic paint also contributed to the new aesthetic, an ideal medium for producing flat areas of high-key color and distinct linear elements. Informed by the decade’s spirit of experimentation and advancements in technology yet also by continuous social change and unbridled consumerism, these vivid, graphic paintings do not sit still. Thousands of her cherished works reside in homes, companies, and public institutions across the country. These joyful examples are assembled from private holdings to inspire a path forward for emerging local artists of all ages. Open through July 9th.

Deborah was the first to be awarded the Jessica Holt Purchase Award in 1992 that ultimately made it possible for her work to be included in RAM’s Permanent Collection. She stated then “My life as an artist is deeply rooted in Rockford. The seeds were sown as an eighth grader when I was awarded a scholarship for art classes at Rockford Art Museum.” Her family now continues her legacy with a perpetual endowment awarded annually to RAM for a locally chosen 7th or 8th grade student, or established artist, and their pursuit of an art-making experience via the museum.

Thanks to a grant from Rockford Area Arts Council, admission is free to the museum. The artwork is a reflection of engagement, community and the democratic nature of printmaking itself. Featured artists include Aida Wilde, Atlan Arceo-Witzl, CHema Skandal!, Fatherless, Ganzeer, Jesse Shaw, Liz Born, and Nicole Marroquin.

Fatherless is a Rockford, Illinois based artistic collaboration between Javier Jimenez, Greg Lang, David Menard, and Ben Rider (U.K.). Since 2010 Fatherless has been known for a variety of large-scale graphics that use appropriated and manipulated imagery to explore socially conscious ideas through printmaking, painting, collage, and installation. Their work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is held in many public and private collections.

Fatherless has consistently pushed forward with a counterintuitive approach to not just screen printing, but artist collaboration as well. Members of Fatherless operate as a unit working freely with each other’s ideas and imagery. This process does not reveal any individual artist or “father” but rather an amalgam of the whole. Each piece is a one-off monoprint that will never be repeated. The collective power of the individuals allows for a wide range of ambitious projects that satirize what they see as “our consumer-driven, media-saturated, disposable culture.”

Constant Pressure is a printed reflection and response to the ability that lies in art to challenge and expand our perceptions of the world around us.

Constant Pressure is organized by Rockford Art Museum Chief Curator, Carrie Johnson. Ryan on Sunday, October 19th at 2 PM at Rockford Art Museum. The gallery walk will begin at 2 PM.

Chicago-based artist Michael x. Ryan gathers the quiet imprints we leave behind — from sidewalk stains and river paths to shower puddles and fallen tree limbs — and gives them form, weight, and voice. Through drawing, mapping, wood relief, and 3D printed objects, Ryan captures traces of human presence — the edge of a river, the imprint of a wet body, the marks on a street — and renders them as physical forms that evoke movement, memory, and place.

This exhibition brings together key installations spanning over four decades, from early works shaped by the Ox-Bow landscape to large-scale reliefs inspired by the streets of Chicago to one tree of interest on the family property in Woodstock, Illinois. By drawing attention to overlooked details, Ryan invites us to consider how our everyday movements shape the spaces we inhabit — and how those spaces, in turn, record and reflect our presence and passage through time.

","type":null,"state":"published","slug":"echoes-of-presence-and-place","created_at":"2026-01-26 21:57:43.164","updated_at":"2026-01-26 21:57:43.164","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":821,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'-2025':15B '1979':14B '19th':54B '2':56B,68B '22nd':18B '30':20B '3d':110B '5':19B '711':30B 'art':28B,60B 'artist':25B,47B,73B 'attent':192B 'base':72B 'begin':66B 'behind':83B 'bodi':129B 'bow':165B 'bring':149B 'captur':114B 'chicago':71B,177B 'chicago-bas':70B 'consid':200B 'decad':156B 'detail':195B 'draw':105B,191B 'earli':158B 'echo':1A 'edg':120B 'everyday':203B 'evok':142B 'exhibit':24B,46B,148B 'fallen':94B 'famili':185B 'form':100B,140B 'four':155B 'free':26B,39B 'galleri':43B,63B 'gather':77B 'give':98B 'human':117B 'illinoi':189B 'imprint':80B,125B 'inhabit':209B 'inspir':172B 'instal':7B,152B 'interest':182B 'invit':197B 'januari':17B 'join':35B 'key':151B 'landscap':166B 'larg':169B 'large-scal':168B 'leav':82B 'lectur':22B 'limb':96B 'main':32B 'map':106B 'mark':131B 'memori':144B 'michael':11B,48B,74B 'movement':143B,204B 'museum':29B,61B 'n':31B 'object':112B 'octob':53B 'one':179B 'open':41B 'overlook':194B 'ox':164B 'ox-bow':163B 'passag':222B 'path':89B 'physic':139B 'place':5A,146B 'pm':21B,57B,69B 'presenc':3A,118B,220B 'print':111B 'properti':186B 'public':40B 'puddl':92B 'quiet':79B 'record':216B 'reflect':218B 'relief':108B,171B 'render':136B 'river':88B,123B 'rockford':27B,34B,59B 'ryan':13B,50B,76B,113B,196B 'scale':170B 'shape':160B,205B 'shower':91B 'sidewalk':85B 'space':207B,213B 'span':153B 'st':33B 'stain':86B 'street':134B,175B 'sunday':52B 'thursday':16B 'time':224B 'togeth':150B 'trace':115B 'tree':95B,180B 'turn':215B 'us':36B,198B 'voic':103B 'walk':44B,64B 'weight':101B 'wet':128B 'wood':107B 'woodstock':188B 'work':9B,159B 'x':12B,49B,75B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1769464646/s3cgk2yaxjgdmop66sls.png","calendar":null,"carousel":false,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":26695,"title":"Homecoming: In Color","starts_at":"2025-11-14 00:00:00","ends_at":"2026-03-30 00:00:00","body":"
Exhibition and free admission sponsored by Dean Alan Olson Foundation and Rosecrance Behavioral Health

Homecoming: In Color celebrates the reopening of Rockford Art Museum after a year-long renovation closure.
