In 1912, he exhibited in Berlin with Galerie Der Sturm and at the First German Autumn Salon in Berlin in 1913.
\r\n\r\n
In 1932, Adler and his family left Berlin under Nazi rule for Prague. When Prague no longer proved safe for the Jewish family, they emigrated to Paris, where he designed posters and worked in publicity for 20th Century Fox. After Paris fell to the Nazis, Adler and his wife departed for Marseilles, where they were aided out of the country and over the Pyrenees Mountains and into Spain by famed American journalist Varian Fry (who helped over 2,000 refugees to escape). Fry forged passports for the couple, who fled on foot, along with their dog. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1937, the decorated Korean war veteran’s artwork has been exhibited across the Midwest at numerous museums and galleries alike. The 81 year old artist began painting at the age of 13 and spent his early adult life as an accomplished professional Jazz musician, playing with such legends as Miles Davis and Stan Getz. Kwint received his training at The Layton School of Art in Milwaukee and spent three years as an apprentice in the studio of Plato Prokopis (1959-61).

Painting from his mind’s eye, Kwint’s surfaces were prepared with various materials such as marble dust, acrylic medium and oil paint. Often, these materials were layered and mixed to create a richly textured surface. Kwint used various tools to carve and mark the surfaces of his paintings, revealing the foundational layers of medium and capturing a unique and expressive mark. Kwint's work explores the innate gestures of painting and acts as a record of his own personal energy. Kwint’s artwork is often non-objective and abstract, offering the viewer an invitation to contemplate and interpret their subjective meanings. His marks echo a primitive, symbolic language, recognizable; however, yet neither literal nor predictable. Delfau was a life long artist and painted independently of his noted design career. His artwork is recognized for its vibrant color and form, and particularly keen use of line. He was highly influenced by the French Modern trends of Cubism and Surrealism, and his artwork is often infused with a dramatic sense of architecture and perspective.

Delfau created fashion designs for such major Paris couture houses as Balmain, Jean Patou and Balenciaga. He completed noteworthy set designs and costumes for numerous international operatic and ballet productions, including those at the Royal Danish Ballet, the Royal Ballet of Great Britain, the Paris Opera, the Dance Theater of Harlem, the Ruth Page International Ballet, the Civic Ballet of Chicago, the Chicago Opera Ballet and the Lyric Opera of Chicago, among others. Most notably, Delfau designed the elaborate stage sets and costumes for the 1986 PBS television production of the Viennese operetta, \"Die Fledermaus\".

Delfau lived primarily in Paris and Chicago. He frequently traveled to Morocco. One of his favorite subjects to paint was the historic Jemaa el-Fna market in Marrakesh. Late in life, he married Chicago ballet impresario Ruth Page. During WWII in June of 1943, William Dalziel, then 18, attempted to enlist in the U.S. Army. At a height of only 4 feet 10 1/2 inches and weighing 105 pounds, Dalziel was rejected due to his small stature. Five months later, still eager to serve and having grown an inch in height, Dalziel returned to his draftboard in October of 1943 and was commissioned into the U.S. Army Air Corps. His tenacity to serve the nation and his particular size caught the attention of the national press and a newspaper article was published across the country showing young Dalziel photographed hanging from a bar to stretch himself before the officers of his draft board. To the Army Air Corps, his determination and size was an ideal fit to serve as a ball turret gunner in a Boeing B-17 “Flying Fortress”. Dalziel served his country with distinction, and became an ace gunner in 308th Army Air Bombardment Division.

Daziel's war-time experiences as a B-17 ball turret gunner greatly impacted his life and artwork. His position was one of the most dangerous assignments of WWII; the life expectancy of a ball turret gunner was typically only 15
missions. Dalziel survived over 25 missions, and became a member of the renowned “Lucky Bastard Club”, an unofficial but highly esteemed award conveyed by fellow airmen to those who survived and excelled in their tours of duty.

After World War II, William Dalziel returned to Chicago to become an artist. Born at the dawn of the 20th Century in Bristolville, Ohio, Chapin graduated from Washington & Jefferson College near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before enrolling at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1922. He would set down deep roots at the Art Institute of Chicago, exhibiting there over 31 times there between 1926 and 1951. In 1927 Chapin won the prestigious Bryan Lathrop Fellowship from the Art Institute – a prize that funded the artist’s yearlong trip to study in Europe. Upon his return to the United States, Chapin decided to remain in Chicago, noting the freedom Chicago artists had in developing independently of the pressure to conform to pre-existing molds (as was experienced by artists in New York, for example). Chapin became a popular instructor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, teaching there from 1929 to 1947 and at the Art Institute’s summer art school in Saugatuck, Michigan (called Ox-Bow) between 1934 – 1938 (he was the director of the school from 1941-1945). Chapin’s contemporaries among Chicago’s artists included such luminaries as Ivan Le Lorraine Albright, Edgar Miller, William S. Schwartz and Aaron Bohrod among others.

A prolific painter, Chapin produced numerous works while traveling in Mexico, France, Spain, Saugatuck and Martha’s Vineyard, where he frequently spent summers and taught at the Old Sculpin Gallery there. Chapin was best recognized for his dynamic and vibrant images of Chicago during the 1930s and '40s. Chapin was a resident of the city's Old Town neighborhood where he lived and kept his studio on Menomonee Street for many years. Described as a “colorful figure, nearly 6 feet 6 inches tall, and thin, and usually wearing tweeds”, it is easy to imagine Chapin at work observing the busy street life of the city.

In addition to his many exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago, Chapin’s work was shown during his lifetime at such institutions as the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia; the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C.; the National Academy of Design, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York and the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, among others. Francis Chapin’s paintings are represented in the collections the Art Institute of Chicago; the Friedman Collection, Chicago; the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown; the Denver Art Museum; the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse; the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach; the Telfair Museum of Art, Savannah and the Brooklyn Museum of Art, among others.

","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"a-roman-holiday-with-francis-chapin","created_at":"2020-08-27 21:15:03.824227","updated_at":"2020-08-27 21:15:03.842894","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":416,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'-1945':220B '1922':81B '1926':101B '1927':105B '1929':189B '1930s':291B '1934':209B '1938':210B '1941':219B '1947':191B '1951':103B '20th':58B '31':97B '40s':293B '6':324B,326B 'aaron':242B 'academi':377B,389B 'addit':352B 'affection':27B 'albright':235B 'american':405B,438B 'among':224B,244B,414B,471B 'arcilesi':20B 'art':76B,90B,115B,182B,195B,199B,359B,380B,398B,406B,426B,439B,443B,449B,455B,463B,470B 'artist':24B,122B,147B,166B,227B 'beach':458B 'becam':173B 'best':279B 'bohrod':243B 'born':52B 'bow':207B 'bristolvill':61B 'brooklyn':467B 'bryan':110B 'busi':345B 'butler':435B 'call':204B 'carnegi':411B 'celebr':47B 'centuri':59B 'chapin':6A,19B,26B,63B,106B,137B,172B,221B,249B,277B,294B,340B,363B,417B 'chicago':33B,79B,93B,142B,146B,185B,225B,288B,362B,429B,433B 'citi':42B,300B,350B 'colleagu':37B 'collect':424B,432B 'colleg':68B 'color':321B 'conform':156B 'contemporari':223B 'corcoran':383B 'd.c':386B 'daughter':21B 'dawn':55B 'day':51B 'dean':31B 'decid':138B 'dedic':13B 'deep':86B 'denver':442B 'describ':318B 'design':391B 'develop':150B 'director':214B 'dynam':283B 'easi':337B 'edgar':236B 'enrol':73B 'europ':129B 'everson':446B 'exampl':171B 'exhibit':8B,11B,94B,356B 'exist':160B 'experienc':164B 'feet':325B 'fellowship':112B 'figur':322B 'fine':379B 'franc':257B 'franci':5A,25B,416B 'freedom':145B 'frequent':266B 'friedman':431B 'fund':120B 'galleri':275B,384B 'graduat':64B 'holiday':3A 'imag':286B 'imagin':339B 'inch':327B 'includ':228B 'independ':151B 'institut':77B,91B,116B,183B,196B,360B,373B,412B,427B,436B 'instructor':176B 'ivan':232B 'jefferson':67B 'kept':309B 'known':28B 'lathrop':111B 'le':233B 'life':347B 'lifetim':370B 'live':307B 'lorrain':234B 'luminari':230B 'mani':316B,355B 'martha':261B 'memori':16B 'menomone':313B 'mexico':256B 'michigan':203B 'miller':237B 'modern':397B 'mold':161B 'museum':395B,403B,444B,447B,453B,461B,468B 'nan':18B 'nation':388B 'near':69B,323B 'neighborhood':304B 'new':168B,392B,399B,407B 'norton':452B 'note':143B 'numer':251B 'observ':343B 'ohio':62B 'old':273B,302B 'one':39B 'other':245B,415B,472B 'ox':206B 'ox-bow':205B 'paint':419B 'painter':34B,48B,248B 'palm':457B 'pennsylvania':71B,376B 'philadelphia':381B 'pittsburgh':70B,413B 'popular':45B,175B 'pre':159B 'pre-exist':158B 'pressur':154B 'prestigi':109B 'prize':118B 'produc':250B 'prolif':247B 'recogn':280B 'remain':140B 'repres':421B 'resid':297B 'return':132B 'roman':2A 'root':87B 'saugatuck':202B,259B 'savannah':464B 'school':179B,200B,217B 'schwartz':240B 'sculpin':274B 'set':84B 'shown':367B 'spain':258B 'spent':267B 'state':136B 'street':314B,346B 'studi':127B 'studio':311B 'summer':198B,268B 'syracus':450B 'tall':328B 'taught':270B 'teach':186B 'telfair':460B 'thin':330B 'time':98B 'town':303B 'travel':254B 'trip':125B 'tweed':334B 'unit':135B 'upon':130B 'usual':332B 'vibrant':285B 'view':7B 'vineyard':263B 'washington':66B,385B 'wear':333B 'west':456B 'whitney':402B 'william':238B 'won':107B 'work':252B,342B,365B 'would':83B 'year':317B 'yearlong':124B 'york':169B,393B,400B,408B 'youngstown':440B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668463/cq8g5kgjxjrl4fi0zhdu.jpg","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669528/event_ics_1721669527433.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":7138,"title":"Harold Haydon: Modern Landscapes","starts_at":"2020-11-06 12:00:00","ends_at":"2020-11-27 12:00:00","body":"
View Exhibition Online

Harold Emerson Haydon was born in 1909 in Fort William, Ontario, Canada. The purpose of this exploration is to dismantle the established technical drawing, and reinterpret it in a new, non-apprehendable system, by adding a measure of dimensional unpredictability. In the case of these compositions, the architecture resides in the n-dimension. The point of these structures is to see what cannot be seen — the anti-subject, so to say. By redefining universal axioms, there are new universal conditions dictating the function of space. Countless lines span across infinity; Large, flat planes intersect through one another; Vast masses exert forces upon elements. Paarshav Shah asks you to dedicate time and attention to each composition; To contrast serial order and unfiltered chaos; To restructure what can be seen beyond face value; To develop a conceptual and visual balance between elements, thus orchestrating technical complexity while maintaining spatial legibility. Alas, space becomes representational of the tangible conscience and intangible reality.
","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"artist-discussion","created_at":"2023-12-08 15:02:29.464071","updated_at":"2023-12-08 15:02:29.479115","excerpt":"","is_timeless":false,"organization_id":416,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'across':93B 'ad':37B 'ala':153B 'anoth':101B 'anti':71B 'anti-subject':70B 'apprehend':34B 'architectur':50B 'art':8B 'artist':1A,3B 'ask':110B 'attent':116B 'axiom':79B 'balanc':142B 'becom':155B 'beyond':133B 'cannot':66B 'case':45B 'chao':126B 'complex':148B 'composit':48B,119B 'conceptu':139B 'condit':84B 'conscienc':160B 'contrast':121B 'countless':90B 'dedic':113B 'develop':137B 'dictat':85B 'dimens':56B 'dimension':41B 'discuss':2A 'dismantl':21B 'draw':25B 'element':107B,144B 'establish':23B 'exert':104B 'explicit':12B 'explor':18B 'face':134B 'flat':96B 'forc':105B 'function':87B 'infin':94B 'intang':162B 'intersect':98B 'larg':95B 'legibl':152B 'line':91B 'maintain':150B 'mass':103B 'measur':39B 'n':55B 'n-dimens':54B 'new':31B,82B 'non':33B 'non-apprehend':32B 'one':100B 'orchestr':146B 'order':123B 'paarshav':108B 'plane':97B 'point':58B 'purpos':15B 'realiti':163B 'redefin':77B 'reinterpret':27B 'represent':156B 'resid':51B 'restructur':128B 'say':75B 'see':64B 'seen':68B,132B 'serial':122B 'shah':109B 'space':89B,154B 'span':92B 'spatial':151B 'statement':4B 'structur':61B 'subject':13B,72B 'system':35B 'tangibl':159B 'technic':24B,147B 'thus':145B 'time':114B 'tradit':6B 'unfilt':125B 'univers':78B,83B 'unlik':5B 'unpredict':42B 'upon':106B 'valu':135B 'vast':102B 'visual':7B,141B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668672/af1rs5iweocjnchq76ev.jpg","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669718/event_ics_1721669718224.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Talks"},{"id":12427,"title":"Landscapes of the American Scene","starts_at":"2024-02-16 12:00:00","ends_at":"2024-03-15 12:00:00","body":"","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"landscapes-of-the-american-scene","created_at":"2024-03-04 21:43:37.743107","updated_at":"2024-03-04 21:43:37.748152","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":416,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'american':4A 'landscap':1A 'scene':5A","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668760/qvrlrrz2fvjzifophe6z.jpg","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669750/event_ics_1721669749608.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":12877,"title":"Midsommar Mid-Century","starts_at":"2024-06-20 12:00:00","ends_at":"2024-07-19 12:00:00","body":"
Midsommar Mid-Century

June 20th - July 19th, 2024
","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"midsommar-mid-century","created_at":"2024-06-19 14:42:55.602285","updated_at":"2024-06-19 14:42:55.608382","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":416,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'19th':12B '2024':13B '20th':10B 'centuri':4A,8B 'juli':11B 'june':9B 'mid':3A,7B 'mid-centuri':2A,6B 'midsommar':1A,5B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668778/jsblmipiq4sffsapmwyw.jpg","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669768/event_ics_1721669768370.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":18860,"title":"The Richard J.
