Widely acclaimed as a sculptor and photographer, Snelson’s inquisitive disposition and technical brilliance also led to his extensive research into atomic structure and the awarding of five U.S. patents. This, the first of its kind, retrospective, celebrates the extraordinary gift of 42 sculptures and 67 photographs from the artist’s family that now form the Kenneth Snelson Collection at the University of Notre Dame. The exhibition is a unique investigation of sculpture, photography, engineering, and science that surveys the breadth of Snelson’s career. It is the premier temporary exhibition at the Raclin Murphy Museum of Art.

Born in Pendleton, Oregon, Kenneth (Ken) Snelson developed an early interest in optics, engineering, and photography. He attended the University of Oregon and Black Mountain College, where he was a protégé of Buckminster Fuller. Snelson developed a construction technique known as tensegrity wherein sculptural elements are held in place through engineering and tension. Although he initially worked with wood and string, he focused most of his sculptural efforts on stainless steel and aluminum.

Snelson achieved critical acclaim in the 1960s and became one of the most sought-after public artists from the 1970s onward; his sculptures permanently installed in public collections and spaces worldwide. He maintained a lifelong commitment to photography and experimented broadly, incorporating panoramic imagery a generation well before the advent of digital technology. Equal Forces recognizes both the structural essence of Snelson’s sculpture and the centrality of sculpture and photography to his celebrated career.
","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"equal-forces-the-sculpture-and-photography-of-kenneth-snelson","created_at":"2024-03-01 19:31:56.45853","updated_at":"2024-03-01 19:31:56.467251","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":1229,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'1927':17B '1960s':210B '1970s':224B '2016':18B '42':75B '67':78B 'acclaim':34B,207B 'achiev':205B 'advent':254B 'also':47B 'although':184B 'aluminum':203B 'among':20B 'art':130B 'artist':26B,82B,221B 'atom':54B 'attend':148B 'award':58B 'becam':212B 'black':154B 'born':131B 'breadth':113B 'brillianc':46B 'broad':245B 'buckminst':163B 'career':117B,279B 'celebr':70B,278B 'central':271B 'centuri':32B 'collect':91B,232B 'colleg':156B 'commit':240B 'construct':168B 'critic':206B 'dame':97B 'develop':138B,166B 'digit':256B 'disposit':43B 'doubt':13B 'earli':140B 'effort':198B 'element':175B 'engin':107B,144B,181B 'equal':1A,258B 'essenc':264B 'exhibit':99B,123B 'experi':244B 'extens':51B 'extraordinari':72B 'famili':84B 'first':65B 'five':60B 'focus':193B 'forc':2A,259B 'form':87B 'fuller':164B 'generat':250B 'gift':73B 'half':31B 'half-centuri':30B 'held':177B 'imageri':248B 'incorpor':246B 'initi':186B 'inquisit':42B 'instal':229B 'interest':141B 'invent':25B 'investig':103B 'ken':136B 'kenneth':8A,15B,89B,135B 'kind':68B 'known':170B 'last':29B 'led':48B 'lifelong':239B 'littl':12B 'maintain':237B 'mountain':155B 'murphi':127B 'museum':128B 'notr':96B 'one':213B 'onward':225B 'optic':143B 'oregon':134B,152B 'origin':23B 'panoram':247B 'patent':62B 'pendleton':133B 'perman':228B 'photograph':39B,79B 'photographi':6A,106B,146B,242B,275B 'place':179B 'premier':121B 'protégé':161B 'public':220B,231B 'raclin':126B 'recogn':260B 'research':52B 'retrospect':69B 'scienc':109B 'sculptor':37B 'sculptur':4A,76B,105B,174B,197B,227B,268B,273B 'snelson':9A,16B,40B,90B,115B,137B,165B,204B,266B 'sought':218B 'sought-aft':217B 'space':234B 'stainless':200B 'steel':201B 'string':191B 'structur':55B,263B 'survey':111B 'technic':45B 'techniqu':169B 'technolog':257B 'temporari':122B 'tensegr':172B 'tension':183B 'u.s':61B 'uniqu':102B 'univers':94B,150B 'well':251B 'wherein':173B 'wide':33B 'wood':189B 'work':187B 'worldwid':235B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668755/k0fkxy9fuwwwbyqrhi2m.jpg","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669746/event_ics_1721669745708.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":12586,"title":"Spring Break Family Night @ the Raclin Murphy","starts_at":"2024-04-04 17:30:00","ends_at":"2024-04-04 19:30:00","body":"
Spring Break Family Night @ the Raclin Murphy

Go on an ARTventure this spring break! The Museum recently acquired this selection of 100 works from the artist’s archive. Born into an affluent family in Cork, Francis Mary Patrick Browne (1880-1860) was the youngest of eight children. By the time he was nine, both of his parents had died, and he became the ward of his uncle, Robert Browne, Bishop of Cloyne. The bishop gave Browne his first camera at his graduation from secondary school at age seventeen.

In spring 1912, Browne received the gift of a ticket on the maiden voyage of RMS Titanic. He sailed from Southampton in England, to Cherbourg, France, then to Cobh in County Cork where he disembarked before the ship steamed into the North Atlantic. Following the Titanic disaster, Browne’s photographs of the ship, her passengers and crew, appeared in newspapers and magazines worldwide. Their popularity enticed the Eastman Kodak Company in England to provide him with a continuing supply of film.
","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"through-the-lens-of-father-browne-s-j-photographic-adventures-of-an-irish-priest","created_at":"2024-03-01 19:33:58.550252","updated_at":"2024-03-01 19:33:58.569004","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":1229,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'-1860':75B '100':56B '1880':74B '1912':125B '2024':16B 'acquir':52B 'adventur':9A 'affluent':66B 'age':121B 'appear':180B 'archiv':62B 'artist':60B 'atlant':165B 'becam':96B 'bishop':104B,108B 'born':63B 'brown':6A,36B,73B,103B,110B,126B,170B 'camera':113B 'centuri':48B 'cherbourg':147B 'children':81B 'cloyn':106B 'cobh':151B 'compani':192B 'continu':200B 'cork':69B,154B 'counti':153B 'crew':179B 'die':93B 'disast':169B 'disembark':157B 'eastman':190B 'eight':80B 'england':145B,194B 'entic':188B 'exhibit':25B 'fall':15B 'famili':67B 'father':5A,34B 'featur':30B 'film':203B 'first':23B,112B 'follow':166B 'franc':148B 'franci':35B,70B 'gave':109B 'gift':129B 'graduat':116B 'intrigu':42B 'irish':12A,43B 'kodak':191B 'len':3A 'magazin':184B 'maiden':135B 'major':24B 'mari':71B 'murphi':19B 'museum':50B 'newspap':182B 'nine':87B 'north':164B 'one':38B 'parent':91B 'passeng':177B 'patrick':72B 'photograph':8A,44B,172B 'popular':187B 'present':21B 'priest':13A 'provid':196B 'raclin':18B 'receiv':127B 'recent':51B 'rms':138B 'robert':102B 's.j':7A 'sail':141B 'school':119B 'secondari':118B 'select':54B 'seventeen':122B 'ship':160B,175B 'sj':37B 'southampton':143B 'spring':124B 'state':29B 'steam':161B 'suppli':201B 'ticket':132B 'time':84B 'titan':139B,168B 'twentieth':47B 'uncl':101B 'unit':28B 'voyag':136B 'ward':98B 'work':32B,57B 'worldwid':185B 'youngest':78B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668755/mg2ab5ao4fdmoqviomac.jpg","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669746/event_ics_1721669745716.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":14705,"title":"Rediscovering Father Browne: Lecture by Edwin Davison","starts_at":"2024-09-25 17:30:00","ends_at":"2024-09-25 19:30:00","body":"
Join us as we welcome Edwin Davison, archivist, photography conservator, and leading expert on the work of Father Francis Browne, S.J., the subject of our fall exhibition Through the Lens of Father Francis Brown, S.J.: Photographic Adventures of an Irish Priest.

","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"rediscovering-father-browne-lecture-by-edwin-davison","created_at":"2024-09-23 20:20:02.427462","updated_at":"2024-09-23 20:20:02.442362","excerpt":"","is_timeless":false,"organization_id":1229,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'adventur':44B 'archivist':15B 'brown':3A,27B,41B 'conserv':17B 'davison':7A,14B 'edwin':6A,13B 'exhibit':34B 'expert':20B 'fall':33B 'father':2A,25B,39B 'franci':26B,40B 'irish':47B 'join':8B 'lead':19B 'lectur':4A 'len':37B 'photograph':43B 'photographi':16B 'priest':48B 'read':49B 'rediscov':1A 's.j':28B,42B 'subject':30B 'us':9B 'welcom':12B 'work':23B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1731088738/r2j1znatremqfp47xust.jpg","calendar":null,"carousel":null,"category_name":"Talks"},{"id":15032,"title":"Sainted Painters and Painting Saints: Art-Making as a Religious Vocation","starts_at":"2024-10-09 17:30:00","ends_at":"2024-10-09 19:00:00","body":"
Lecture by Professor Robin M. Within this exhibition, the artist explores how legacies of colonialism lead to harmful appropriative practices, rampant consumption, and destruction of Earth’s life-sustaining biodiversity, as well as the attempted privatization of, and extraction from, sovereign celestial bodies. Working in diverse mediums, she cautions<s> </s>that we are already experiencing climate crisis.

Throughout Tossin’s work, she encourages people to join together to move away from our consumeristic behaviors in order to create lasting change. The exhibition brings together three bodies of Tossin’s work. The first comprises her reflections on Maya revival architecture, including two films—Mojo’q che b’ixan ri ixkanulab / Antes de que los Volcanes Canten / Before the Volcanoes Sing and Ch’u Mayaa—as well as a series of sculptures on loan from the Whitney Museum of American Art. She recontextualizes Maya revival buildings, an architectonic style realized primarily by United States-based architects who borrowed motifs from a variety of Mesoamerican cultures at the beginning of the twentieth century. Tossin’s work imbues these colonized spaces with performances inspired by ancient Maya musical instruments, depictions of dance, and contemporary Maya poetry to reclaim this contentious revivalist architecture for Maya-descendant communities.

The next body of work explores the impact of extraction and consumerism on the environment in works such as Encontro das Águas and Rising Temperature Casualty. Tossin places traditional Amazonian weaving practices in conversation with digital technology and consumeristic waste, primarily that of corporate Amazon delivery boxes and envelopes; she emphasize how this global corporation is harming the very environment and peoples after which it is named<s>.</s>

Finally, the artist considers the impact of expansionist and extractive colonial mentalities that are embedded in our approaches to the privatization of space exploration and mining. Works such as Maritime Arrivals, Future Geography, and new commissions by the Raclin Murphy Museum of Art address how celestial bodies are recognized as sovereign under international law and are sacred to many cultures worldwide. Tossin views current international space law insufficient to regulate private corporations, the very ones<s> </s>that are primary contributors to global climate change. Her exhibition reveals how legacies of colonialism continue to have a profound impact on people, the planet, and now, space.

This exhibition is organized by Jared Katz, former Associate Curator of the Americas and Africa at the Raclin Murphy Museum of Art, and is made possible by the Duncan Family Endowment, with additional support from the Kathleen and Richard Champlin Endowment, and the Friends of the Raclin Murphy Museum of Art, Charter membership.

Clarissa Tossin (b. 1973, Porto Alegre, Brazil; lives in Los Angeles) has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Frye Art Museum, Seattle (2023), the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (2022), and La Kunsthalle Mulhouse, France (2021), among others. galleries, Brendan Fernandes’s Moving Through is a site-specific work featuring six dancers whose movements will respond to a dynamic dance score composed collaboratively by students. Rather than a stationary performance, dancers will move through the Museum, allowing visitors to watch the fluid performance and come and go as they wish.

Fernandes intends the work to dissolve the boundaries among visual art, dancers, and audience members. As the dancers search for specific works of art, they will pause, interact, and build relationships with each work of art while using gesture and movement as a form of communication. Though largely silent, the performance will be punctuated by sound. At times, the soundscape will become a cacophony of overlapping tones; at others, a call-and-response dialogue among dancers or a rhythmic interplay of sound will emerge and then disappear as they switch their radios on and off. These auditory moments will animate the space, providing tempo and rhythm for movement.

By integrating movement, stillness, and sonic interplay, Fernandes reimagines the Museum as a living, breathing space where art and dance converge, challenging how we see, experience, and interpret both art forms.

Brendan Fernandes is the 2025 Artist-in-Residence in the Notre Dame Initiative on Race and Resilience. Walter Osborne’s Portraits of Dublin, 1880–1900","starts_at":"2025-08-19 00:00:00","ends_at":"2025-12-07 00:00:00","body":"
The Raclin Murphy Museum of Art presents the first monographic exhibition in forty years of the work of Walter Osborne, one of Ireland’s most-heralded artists. The exhibition charts Osborne’s trajectory from his student days in Dublin and Antwerp through his sojourn in Brittany and his early practice in England before returning to his native city in 1892 to care for his niece and aging parents following the death of his beloved sister Violet. Through his depictions of Dublin’s streets, parks, public spaces, domestic interiors and gardens, countryside, and most importantly its people, a vision of a vibrant––if divided––Ireland emerges. Osborne’s experiences abroad and his commercial acumen helped establish Dublin’s unique brand of Modern painting rife with the possibility of change. Iconic works by the artist on loan from the National Gallery of Ireland, Hugh Lane Gallery, Hunt Museum in Limerick, Crawford Art Gallery in Cork, and private collectors in Ireland and the United States offer a rich tapestry of life and art in Ireland at the close of the nineteenth century.

This exhibition is made possible by the Donald and Marilyn Keough Foundation with additional support from the J. An internationally recognized leader in the growing field of arts and health, Dr. Fancourt studies how music, visual art, dance, theater, and museum engagement can reduce stress, improve well-being, strengthen social connections, and support healing. During this talk, Dr. Fancourt will explore the powerful role the arts can play in human flourishing, offering new perspectives on why creative experiences matter and how art museums are not only places to encounter art, but spaces where wellness, reflection, and human connection can thrive. Copies of Art Cure: The Science of How the Arts Save Lives will be available for purchase, with a book signing by Dr. Fancourt immediately following the talk. Dr. Fancourt's talk will be recorded and available on the Museum's YouTube page for 30 days. A link to the recording will be shared as soon as the video is posted.
","type":null,"state":"published","slug":"the-science-of-how-the-arts-save-lives-a-talk-with-dr-daisy-fancourt","created_at":"2026-10-09 15:04:50.485","updated_at":"2026-10-09 15:04:50.485","excerpt":"","is_timeless":false,"organization_id":1229,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'30':170B 'art':6A,33B,40B,52B,61B,91B,107B,115B,128B,135B 'author':31B 'avail':140B,162B 'book':145B 'colleg':28B 'connect':76B,123B 'copi':126B 'creativ':102B 'cure':34B,129B 'daisi':13A,22B 'danc':62B 'day':171B 'dr':12A,21B,55B,83B,148B,154B 'encount':114B 'engag':66B 'even':19B 'experi':103B 'explor':86B 'fancourt':14A,23B,56B,84B,149B,155B 'field':50B 'flourish':96B 'follow':151B 'grow':49B 'heal':79B 'health':54B 'human':95B,122B 'immedi':150B 'improv':70B 'intern':44B 'join':15B 'leader':46B 'link':173B 'live':8A,42B,137B 'london':29B 'matter':104B 'museum':65B,108B,165B 'music':59B 'new':98B 'offer':97B 'page':168B 'perspect':99B 'place':112B 'play':93B 'post':186B 'power':88B 'professor':25B 'purchas':142B 'recogn':45B 'record':160B,176B 'reduc':68B 'reflect':120B 'research':24B 'role':89B 'save':7A,41B,136B 'scienc':2A,36B,131B 'share':179B 'sign':146B 'social':75B 'soon':181B 'space':117B 'strengthen':74B 'stress':69B 'studi':57B 'support':78B 'talk':10A,82B,153B,157B 'theater':63B 'thrive':125B 'univers':27B 'us':16B 'video':184B 'visual':60B 'well':72B,119B 'well-b':71B 'youtub':167B","thumbnail":"http://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1791556869/vrLf7NojhJwtxK-eeV4jeQ95rllsVPk3pxdJmv0tw449c9GjCMMwvWHUqjT_UHjO2G58ehIoshWdlQCCsjJ81rS1MmCxBbJ526OlQrZxkUx1XjiFbDHF3yaHBpgPPMKaS2BqAZgQkUrzGHF2eXoBT7MPyI-ZSrm6KA5kkwKdOUM_dd4baj.png","calendar":null,"carousel":false,"category_name":"Talks"}]}
