The exhibition is the first to highlight Katz’s deep interest in poetry and his connection to the poets of the New York School. In the early 1950s, as Alex Katz entered the art world and a new style of American poetry emerged, the painter found natural affinities to the poets in their shared interest in expressing contemporary living. As scholar Debra Bricker Balken states in her essay for the forthcoming exhibition publication, “Not only did he feel that its community was vibrant but also its denizens more attuned to the present, to the impulses of American life, and to articulating new languages that brazenly defied tradition by flaunting style over meaning. What Katz found so compelling about this scene was its complete disregard for aesthetic precedent, irreverence for an academy of poetry, and gravitation toward vernacular expression, where words were less pondered and possessed an immediacy that spoke of nowness.” The exhibition brings together works created over the past 60 years, including prints, portfolios, special-edition books, paintings, and unique cutouts, all of which center on Katz’s communion and intersection with poets throughout his career.

Organized by the Poetry Foundation with guidance from the artist and his son, the poet Vincent Katz, the exhibition offers an opportunity to experience Alex Katz’s deep passion for an art form whose tactics he considers to be “more stimulating than painting.” The exhibition opens at the Poetry Foundation on February 18, with a public reception from 2 PM CST–3 PM CST, featuring the premiere of a video dialogue between Alex and Vincent Katz.

GRAY is also pleased to announce the release of the forthcoming publication, Alex Katz: Collaborations with Poets. This volume features an in-depth essay written by art historian and curator Debra Bricker Balken and comprehensive illustrations of Alex Katz’s book covers, print portfolios, and unique artworks that center on his work with poets such as John Ashbery, Frank O’Hara, Ted Berrigan, Alice Notley, and Ron Padgett.

Image: Alex Katz, Boy with Branch 1, 1975

","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"alex-katz-collaborations-with-poets","created_at":"2023-02-13 17:02:59.576742","updated_at":"2023-03-28 16:15:12.187498","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":1190,"highlighted":true,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'1':365B '18':266B '1950s':53B '1975':366B '2':272B '3':275B '60':186B 'academi':156B 'aesthet':151B 'affin':73B 'alex':1A,6B,55B,238B,286B,302B,328B,360B 'alic':354B 'also':110B,292B 'american':66B,122B 'announc':295B 'art':59B,245B,317B 'articul':126B 'artist':17B,223B 'artwork':337B 'ashberi':348B 'attun':114B 'balken':89B,323B 'berrigan':353B 'book':194B,331B 'boy':362B 'branch':364B 'brazen':130B 'bricker':88B,322B 'bring':179B 'career':213B 'center':202B,339B 'collabor':3A,8B,22B,304B 'communion':206B 'communiti':106B 'compel':142B 'complet':148B 'comprehens':325B 'connect':41B 'consid':250B 'contemporari':83B 'cover':332B 'creat':182B 'cst':274B,277B 'curat':320B 'cutout':198B 'debra':87B,321B 'deep':35B,241B 'defi':131B 'denizen':112B 'depth':313B 'dialogu':284B 'disregard':149B 'earli':52B 'edit':193B 'emerg':68B 'engag':23B 'enter':57B 'essay':93B,314B 'exhibit':27B,97B,178B,232B,258B 'experi':237B 'express':82B,163B 'featur':278B,309B 'februari':265B 'feel':103B 'first':30B 'flaunt':134B 'form':246B 'forthcom':96B,300B 'found':71B,140B 'foundat':218B,263B 'frank':349B 'gravit':160B 'gray':290B 'guidanc':220B 'hara':351B 'highlight':32B 'historian':318B 'illustr':326B 'imag':359B 'immediaci':172B 'impuls':120B 'in-depth':311B 'includ':188B 'interest':36B,80B 'intersect':208B 'intim':13B 'irrever':153B 'john':347B 'katz':2A,7B,33B,56B,139B,204B,230B,239B,289B,303B,329B,361B 'languag':128B 'less':167B 'life':123B 'live':84B 'long':20B 'long-tim':19B 'look':14B 'mean':137B 'natur':72B 'new':47B,63B,127B 'notley':355B 'now':176B 'o':350B 'offer':233B 'open':259B 'opportun':235B 'organ':214B 'padgett':358B 'paint':195B,256B 'painter':70B 'passion':242B 'past':185B 'pleas':293B 'pm':273B,276B 'poet':5A,10B,25B,44B,76B,210B,228B,306B,344B 'poetri':38B,67B,158B,217B,262B 'ponder':168B 'portfolio':190B,334B 'possess':170B 'preced':152B 'premier':280B 'present':117B 'print':189B,333B 'public':98B,269B,301B 'recept':270B 'releas':297B 'ron':357B 'scene':145B 'scholar':86B 'school':49B 'share':79B 'son':226B 'special':192B 'special-edit':191B 'spoke':174B 'state':90B 'stimul':254B 'style':64B,135B 'tactic':248B 'take':11B 'ted':352B 'throughout':211B 'time':21B 'togeth':180B 'toward':161B 'tradit':132B 'uniqu':197B,336B 'vernacular':162B 'vibrant':108B 'video':283B 'vincent':229B,288B 'volum':308B 'whose':247B 'word':165B 'work':181B,342B 'world':60B 'written':315B 'year':187B 'york':48B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668618/lhnmghfrcdyk8q7c2svs.jpg","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669663/event_ics_1721669662890.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":11589,"title":"Harriet Monroe & the Open Door","starts_at":"2023-09-14 12:00:00","ends_at":"2024-01-13 12:00:00","body":"
On view through Saturday, January 13, 2024

Harriet Monroe (1860–1936) was a poet, a critic, and the founding editor of Poetry magazine whose steadfast commitment to the art form and its creators altered the course of American literary history.

Harriet Monroe & the Open Door maps the evolution of Monroe’s editorial philosophy, locating it within the cultures and structures of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This exhibition includes original artwork by Lilli Carré alongside archival photographs, letters, and other documents from Monroe’s life.

Serving as Poetry’s editor for twenty-four years, Monroe remains Poetry’s longest tenured editor and the first and only woman editor in the magazine’s history. five historic decades, this exhibition will feature 50 broadsides, 50 iconic vintage poetry event posters, archival materials and ephemera, and the premier of a documentary film A Bigger Table: 50 Years of the Chicago Poetry Center.

In defiance of literary censorship in the 1950s, a group of Chicago writers and editors organized to create publication and performance spaces that welcomed queer and racially diverse contemporary voices. These organic, community-driven efforts, which included the Big Table literary magazine and reading series, were formalized in 1974 into the nonprofit Chicago Poetry Center (CPC). The title “Big Table” was chosen because a big table has room for everyone and because one of the censored writers found a note he’d written to himself that said, “Get a bigger writing table.”

For 50 years, CPC has remained rooted in its history of liberatory artistic practice. The organization’s programs have supported tens of thousands of Chicago Public School students in exploring their powerful voices, offered platforms for nearly a thousand poets to express themselves in writing and aloud, and engaged individuals nationwide in critical conversations around race using poetry as a springboard for transformative dialogue.

Image Credit: Vintage Chicago Poetry Center posters.
","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"a-bigger-table-50-years-of-the-chicago-poetry-center","created_at":"2024-06-17 15:38:02.513068","updated_at":"2024-06-17 15:38:02.548989","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":1190,"highlighted":true,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'00':16B,18B '13':14B '1950s':66B '1974':108B '2':15B '5':17B '50':4A,30B,32B,52B,153B 'aloud':198B 'archiv':38B 'around':206B 'artist':164B 'big':98B,118B,124B 'bigger':2A,50B,149B 'broadsid':31B 'celebr':20B 'censor':135B 'censorship':63B 'center':10A,58B,114B,221B 'chicago':8A,56B,70B,112B,176B,219B 'chosen':121B 'communiti':92B 'community-driven':91B 'contemporari':87B 'convers':205B 'cpc':21B,115B,155B 'creat':76B 'credit':217B 'critic':204B 'd':141B 'decad':25B 'defianc':60B 'dialogu':215B 'divers':86B 'documentari':47B 'driven':93B 'editor':73B 'effort':94B 'engag':200B 'ephemera':41B 'event':36B 'everyon':129B 'exhibit':27B 'explor':181B 'express':193B 'featur':29B 'film':48B 'five':23B 'formal':106B 'found':137B 'get':147B 'group':68B 'histor':24B 'histori':161B 'icon':33B 'imag':216B 'includ':96B 'individu':201B 'juli':13B 'liberatori':163B 'literari':62B,100B 'magazin':101B 'materi':39B 'nationwid':202B 'near':188B 'nonprofit':111B 'note':139B 'offer':185B 'one':132B 'organ':74B,90B,167B 'perform':79B 'platform':186B 'pm':19B 'poet':191B 'poetri':9A,35B,57B,113B,209B,220B 'poster':37B,222B 'power':183B 'practic':165B 'premier':44B 'program':169B 'public':77B,177B 'queer':83B 'race':207B 'racial':85B 'read':103B 'recept':11B 'remain':157B 'room':127B 'root':158B 'said':146B 'saturday':12B 'school':178B 'seri':104B 'space':80B 'springboard':212B 'student':179B 'support':171B 'tabl':3A,51B,99B,119B,125B,151B 'ten':172B 'thousand':174B,190B 'titl':117B 'transform':214B 'use':208B 'vintag':34B,218B 'voic':88B,184B 'welcom':82B 'write':150B,196B 'writer':71B,136B 'written':142B 'year':5A,53B,154B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668778/nhedd9twk0y9bgr1fma1.png","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669768/event_ics_1721669768221.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":12870,"title":"A Bigger Table: 50 Years of the Chicago Poetry Center","starts_at":"2024-07-13 12:00:00","ends_at":"2024-07-13 12:00:00","body":"
Celebrate the new exhibition honoring 50 years of the Chicago Poetry Center with a reception in the Poetry Foundation’s courtyard. Luftwerk x Aram Saroyan","starts_at":"2024-10-17 12:00:00","ends_at":"2025-02-15 17:00:00","body":"
The single word poem “lighght,” by Aram Saroyan, is the inspiration for Luftwerk’s site-specific installation at the Poetry Foundation. Saroyan describes his poem, a seminal work of minimalism, as operating like “electricity,” instant and continuous. Luftwerk’s immersive interpretation brings viewers inside an ever shifting prism of colored light, transforming the Poetry Foundation gallery into a dynamic lightbox.

Light and color are the core elements in Luftwerk’s artistic practice. Their interest is in the power of light as a crucial element of vision, whose dynamic relationship to color perception is explored. Through the use of various modalities—such as projection of videos, shadow casting, among others—they integrate light into each project to explore its fleeting and changing nature.

“lighght” was written by Saroyan in 1965 and first published in 1966.
