These stunning artworks, books, broadsides, and maps were initially prized as unique luxury editions of works normally printed on paper. Fabrics were substituted for paper at great cost, often using imported materials. Printing on Fabric also investigates the intentional choices of the printers and commissioners, some of whom were female, and shows how the origins of these lavish materials reflected the global world of the early modern textile economy.

Though the sheen of foreign silks enhanced the beauty of these objects for specific recipients, the techniques used to make them soon served wider audiences and cheaper fabrics equally well. Indeed, while surviving early examples are kept in museum and library collections, they inspired more recent printed wearables such as memorial imagery on t-shirts. From the ethereally unfamiliar to the everyday, exhibition audiences will find these fabric printings dazzling, intriguing, and thought-provoking.

The accompanying exhibition catalog will be available in Fall 2026.

Details
","type":null,"state":"published","slug":"printing-on-fabric","created_at":"2026-05-05 17:31:58.978","updated_at":"2026-05-05 17:31:58.978","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":120,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'2026':181B 'accompani':173B 'also':62B 'artwork':29B 'audienc':120B,160B 'avail':178B 'beauti':104B 'book':30B 'broadsid':31B 'catalog':175B 'centuri':23B 'cheaper':122B 'choic':66B 'collect':137B 'commission':71B 'cost':54B 'dazzl':166B 'detail':182B 'earli':92B,129B 'economi':95B 'edit':40B 'enhanc':102B 'equal':124B 'ether':154B 'everyday':158B 'exampl':130B 'exhibit':5B,159B,174B 'fabric':3A,19B,47B,61B,123B,164B 'fall':180B 'femal':76B 'fifteenth':22B 'find':162B 'foreign':100B 'global':88B 'great':53B 'groundbreak':8B 'histori':15B 'imageri':147B 'import':57B 'inde':126B 'initi':35B 'inspir':139B 'intent':65B 'intrigu':167B 'investig':63B 'kept':132B 'known':14B 'lavish':84B 'librari':136B 'littl':13B 'little-known':12B 'look':9B 'luxuri':39B 'make':115B 'map':33B 'materi':58B,85B 'memori':146B 'modern':93B 'museum':134B 'normal':43B 'object':107B 'often':55B 'origin':81B 'paper':46B,51B 'present':26B 'print':1A,17B,44B,59B,142B,165B 'printer':69B 'prize':36B 'provok':171B 'recent':141B 'recipi':110B 'reflect':86B 'serv':118B 'sheen':98B 'shirt':151B 'show':78B 'silk':101B 'soon':117B 'specif':109B 'stun':28B 'substitut':49B 'surviv':128B 't-shirt':149B 'take':6B 'techniqu':112B 'textil':94B 'though':96B 'thought':170B 'thought-provok':169B 'unfamiliar':155B 'uniqu':38B 'use':56B,113B 'wearabl':143B 'well':125B 'wider':119B 'work':42B 'world':89B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1763582394/af6nfgj4chsv4ze1uuge.jpg","calendar":null,"carousel":false,"category_name":"Exhibitions"}],"pastEvents":[{"id":2858,"title":"Jun Fujita: American Visionary","starts_at":"2020-02-04 18:00:00","ends_at":"2020-02-04 19:00:00","body":"
Tuesday, February 4, 2020

Reception: 5 to 6 pm

Program: 6 to 7 pm

Ruggles Hall

Free and open to all. An expanded version of Jun Fujita: Oblivion, first mounted at the Poetry Foundation in 2017, the exhibition explores Fujita’s poetry, photojournalism, landscape photography, and uncommon life.

Born outside of Hiroshima in 1888, Fujita came to Chicago in 1909, becoming the first Japanese American photojournalist in the city. As an English-language tanka poet, he published regularly in Poetry during the 1920s; as a photographer, he captured many of the most famous moments in Chicago history, including the Eastland Disaster, the 1919 race riots, and the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.

Throughout his work, Fujita put forward a vision of what “American” can mean, achieving unprecedented success in his profession despite the hostility, prejudice, and persecution he faced as a Japanese native.

Speakers’ Bios:

Fred Sasaki is Art Director for Poetry magazine and the Poetry Foundation’s Exhibitions Co-curator. He edited Who Reads Poetry (University of Chicago Press, 2017) with Don Share and Jun Fujita: Oblivion (Poetry Foundation, 2017) with Katherine Litwin. He also publishes Sasaki Family Zines with his closest friends and collaborates with Homeroom Chicago and the Prison + Neighborhood Art Project.

Katherine Litwin is Library Director and Exhibitions Co-curator for the Poetry Foundation. She edited Jun Fujita: Oblivion (Poetry Foundation, 2017) with Fred Sasaki.

Graham Lee is a writer, graphic designer, and the great nephew of Jun Fujita. Lee spent the last five years researching Fujita’s life, retracing his great uncle’s footsteps, and creating a story that combines a rich family history with historical and personal photographs of extraordinary Chicago events.

This event is made possible by a major grant from The Andrew W. Gibson, a member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and of Cherokee descent, responds to nineteenth-century portraits of Indigenous people in the Newberry Library’s collection. Niall Atkinson

This lecture will trace the spatial and social dimensions of the urban development of the city of Florence from the late Middle Ages until the time of Botticelli at the turn of the sixteenth century. In this period Florence emerged as one of the most dynamic economies as well as one of the most innovative centers of cultural and scientific innovation in pre-modern Europe. Through a series of case studies this lecture will investigate the underpinnings of these developments and innovations through an exploration of key monuments of the built environment that led to the formation of the city that Botticelli called home. This lecture is sponsored by Chicago Map Society.

Register to attend in-person

Register, online webinar

Niall Atkinson is Associate Professor of Art History and Romance Languages and Literature at the University of Chicago. His research focuses on the experience of architecture and urban space in early modern Italy in order to understand the built environment as a collective social construction of the body’s sensorial apparatus. His recent work has explored the relationship between sound, space, and architecture and their role in the construction of civic society, culminating in the publication of The Noisy Renaissance: sound, architecture, and Florentine urban life (Penn State, 2016). He is currently co-writing a book on the urban visual and spatial effects of the narratives and itineraries of French travelers to early modern Rome (with Susanna Caviglia, Duke University). He is also experimenting with digital technologies to spatialize the demographic data contained in the 1427 tax census of Florence (catasto) into an interactive geographic platform. In collaboration with a consortium of related digital reconstruction projects focused on Renaissance Florence (Florentia Illustrata), this method of geo-referenced spatial history will lay the groundwork for future experiments in mapping the soundscapes and other sensory experiences of early modern cities. Future projects include the role of city descriptions in mediating cultural exchange in early modern Mediterranean travel accounts, as well as an ongoing interdisciplinary collaborative project exploring the cultural interactions of the Indian Ocean (“Interwoven: Sonic, visual and textual histories of the Indian Ocean world”). In 2018, he co-curated the US Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale on the theme, “Dimensions of Citizenship.”

The lecture series “Quattrocento Florence: the City and its Artists” is co-sponsored by the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago and the Newberry Library's Center for Renaissance Studies and complements the Minneapolis Institute of Art exhibition “Botticelli and Renaissance Florence: Masterworks from the Uffizi.” Four art historians explore urbanism and the production of art in fifteenth-century Florence through close analysis of works in the MIA exhibition.

The exhibition “Botticelli and Renaissance Florence: Masterworks from the Uffizi” is open at the Minneapolis Institute of Art from October 16, 2022 through January 8, 2023. Although rarely considered in relation to one another, these “long wars” are endlessly intertwined through similar military strategy and the persistence of anti-colonial resistance. The residues of these entanglements are visible in the creative responses to these long wars by Indigenous, Black, and South Asian artists, some of whom are veterans.

Surviving the Long Wars: Residues and Rebellions highlights intimate connections across vast differences in time, geography, and medium to propose uncommon alliances that can serve as a foundation for solidarity.

Historic works from the Newberry's Edward E. From ledger art and collage to beadwork and portraiture, the featured works record community history, redirect the colonial gaze, and recycle the technologies of US militarism to open up alternative ways of knowing, sensing, and living in the long wars.

FEATURED ARTISTS

Miridith Campbell (Kiowa)

Mahwish Chishty

Gilbert Kills Pretty Enemy III (Hunkpapa Lakota)

Rodney Ewing

Darrell Wayne Fair

Frederick Gokliz (Apache)

Terran Last Gun (Piikani)

","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"surviving-the-long-wars-residues-and-rebellions","created_at":"2023-02-02 21:27:15.779261","updated_at":"2023-02-10 18:26:17.371926","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":120,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'18th':13B '19th':15B '21st':22B '21st-century':21B 'across':101B 'allianc':112B 'altern':195B 'although':38B 'american':17B 'anoth':45B 'anti':61B 'anti-coloni':60B 'apach':149B,227B 'art':168B 'artist':85B,207B 'artwork':154B 'asian':84B 'ayer':129B 'beadwork':172B 'bipoc':162B 'black':81B,133B 'campbel':209B 'centuri':16B,23B 'cheyenn':136B 'chishti':212B 'collag':170B 'collect':130B 'coloni':62B,183B 'communiti':179B 'conflict':34B 'connect':100B 'consid':40B 'contemporari':153B 'creativ':73B 'darrel':222B 'differ':103B 'draw':140B,145B 'e':128B 'edward':127B 'endless':50B 'enemi':216B 'entangl':68B 'ewe':221B 'fair':224B 'featur':176B,206B 'foundat':118B 'frederick':147B,225B 'gaze':184B 'geographi':106B 'gilbert':213B 'global':24B 'gokliz':148B,226B 'gun':230B 'highlight':98B 'histor':121B 'histori':37B,180B 'hors':134B 'hunkpapa':218B 'iii':217B 'includ':131B 'indian':18B,138B 'indigen':80B 'info':9B 'ink':142B 'intertwin':51B 'intim':99B 'kill':214B 'kiowa':137B,210B 'know':198B 'lakota':219B 'last':229B 'ledger':135B,139B,167B 'live':201B 'long':3A,47B,77B,93B,204B 'longest':32B 'mahwish':211B 'medium':108B 'militar':191B 'militari':33B,54B 'miridith':208B 'newberri':125B 'one':44B 'onlin':10B 'open':193B 'overlook':159B 'pair':151B 'persist':58B 'piikani':231B 'portraitur':174B 'pretti':215B 'propos':110B 'rare':39B 'rebellion':7A,97B 'reclaim':156B 'record':178B 'recycl':186B 'redirect':181B 'relat':42B 'residu':5A,65B,95B 'resist':63B,165B 'respons':74B 'rodney':220B 'sens':199B 'serv':115B 'similar':53B 'solidar':120B 'south':83B 'strategi':55B,160B 'surviv':1A,91B,163B 'technolog':188B 'terran':228B 'terror':27B 'time':105B 'two':29B 'uncommon':111B 'us':36B,190B 'vast':102B 'veteran':90B 'visibl':70B,157B 'war':4A,19B,25B,48B,78B,94B,205B 'watercolor':144B 'way':196B 'wayn':223B 'work':122B,177B 'yet':158B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668614/vvzfvpwqpfp2ldp5ayqr.png","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669659/event_ics_1721669658686.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":10594,"title":"Pop-Up Books through the Ages","starts_at":"2023-03-21 12:00:00","ends_at":"2023-07-15 12:00:00","body":"
More info online here

Pop-up books go back centuries. Since the 1400s, readers have been lifting flaps, spinning dials, and opening elaborate three-dimensional spreads in the pages of books. The earliest interactive texts were intended for scholars. Over time, pop-up books found new audiences and grew in popularity, engaging a wide range of users from emperors to mathematicians to children.

Featuring books, maps, and ephemera from the Newberry collection, Pop-Up Books through the Ages traces the extensive history of hands-on reading. Tactile, interactive components can be found in everything from a 1483 astronomical calendar and a 1775 battle map to a 1932 edition of Pinocchio. Viewing these different items in one place, visitors will see how the art, science, and business of pop-up books evolved over hundreds of years.

In addition to exploring the past, the exhibition highlights the present and future of pop-up books, including the work of contemporary book and paper artists who are pushing the form in new directions. Two of these artists, Hannah Batsel and Shawn Sheehy, have even designed a pop-up version of the Newberry that you can take home and construct yourself!

Pop-Up Books through the Ages is generously supported by The National Endowment for the Arts, the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, Professor James H. Registration will take place on the Caxton Club's website.

Join Bruce Kennett as he discusses W.A. Dwiggins' story collection, Athalinthia. Produced entirely in New England, the book is filled with delights. It comes straight from the imagination and heart of W.A. Dwiggins, one of the great visual artists of the twentieth century. Wise and witty stories written by Dwiggins are accompanied by more than a hundred of his fanciful illustrations – many never before seen in print.

From 1910 to 1926, Dwiggins created a series of stories about an imaginary place he named Athalinthia and the people who lived there. A place perhaps akin to Persia a thousand years ago, or Uzbekistan in the nineteenth century … he never said. This is Dwiggins at his most fanciful, his most personal.

In 1928, after nearly twenty years of writing and picture-making, Dwiggins tried valiantly to get his stories published in one volume. He designed the book, made a dummy, and shopped it around to publishing houses. He had no luck. Discouraged, Dwiggins put the project aside. Thankfully, after a delay of nearly a hundred years, Dwiggins' biographer Bruce Kennett picked it up and saw it through to the end. This is a remarkable achievement and a pure delight. In these troubling times, stories such as these are a comfort for all of us to have on our bookshelves.

LEARN MORE AND REGISTER

SPEAKERS

Bruce Kennett is author of the comprehensive biography, W. When some of that violence was then aired on network television, another kind of hell broke loose. Some viewers were stunned and outraged; others thought the protestors deserved what they got. No one—least of all Chicago mayor Richard J. Daley—was happy with how the networks handled it.

In this Meet the Author event, join Heather Hendershot and Simon Balto for a discussion of Hendershot’s new book, When the News Broke: Chicago 1968 and the Polarizing of America. In her book, Hendershot revisits TV coverage of those four chaotic days—not only the violence in the streets, but also the tumultuous convention itself, where Black citizens and others forcefully challenged southern delegations that had excluded them, anti-Vietnam delegates sought to change the party’s policy on the war, and journalists and delegates alike were bullied by both Daley’s security forces and party leaders. Ultimately, Hendershot reveals the convention as a pivotal moment in American political history, one in which a distorted notion of “liberal media bias” became mainstreamed and nationalized. As Hendershot demonstrates, it doesn’t matter whether the “whole world is watching” if people don’t believe what they see.

When the News Broke is available to purchase at the Newberry bookshop, and Hendershot will sign copies after the talk.

This event is co-sponsored by the Chicago Collections Consortium.
","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"meet-the-author-heather-hendershot-in-conversation-with-simon-balto","created_at":"2023-05-15 17:05:17.657565","updated_at":"2023-05-15 17:05:17.664743","excerpt":"","is_timeless":false,"organization_id":120,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'1968':48B,133B 'air':66B 'alik':195B 'also':159B 'america':138B 'american':217B 'anoth':70B 'anti':178B 'anti-vietnam':177B 'author':3A,112B 'avail':260B 'balto':10A,119B 'beat':54B 'becam':230B 'believ':251B 'bias':229B 'black':165B 'book':127B,141B 'bookshop':266B 'broke':74B,131B,258B 'bulli':197B 'caption':35B 'challeng':170B 'chang':183B 'chaotic':149B 'chicago':52B,95B,132B,283B 'citizen':166B 'co':279B 'co-sponsor':278B 'collect':284B 'consortium':285B 'convent':50B,162B,211B 'convers':7A 'copi':271B 'coverag':145B 'cri':44B 'daley':99B,200B 'day':150B 'deleg':172B,180B,194B 'democrat':49B 'demonstr':236B 'deserv':86B 'discuss':122B 'distort':224B 'doesn':238B 'event':31B,113B,276B 'exclud':175B 'forc':169B,203B 'four':148B 'got':89B 'handl':106B 'happi':101B 'heather':4A,115B 'held':15B 'hell':73B 'hendershot':5A,116B,124B,142B,208B,235B,268B 'histori':219B 'in-person':16B 'j':98B 'join':114B 'journalist':192B 'kind':71B 'leader':206B 'least':92B 'liber':227B 'live':34B 'livestream':23B 'loos':75B 'mainstream':231B 'matter':240B 'mayor':96B 'media':228B 'meet':1A,110B 'moment':215B 'nation':233B 'network':68B,105B 'new':126B 'newberri':21B,265B 'news':130B,257B 'notion':225B 'one':91B,220B 'onlin':27B 'other':82B,168B 'outrag':81B 'parti':185B,205B 'peopl':248B 'person':18B 'pivot':214B 'pleas':36B 'polar':136B 'polic':53B 'polici':187B 'polit':218B 'program':12B 'protestor':45B,85B 'purchas':262B 'regist':37B 'reveal':209B 'revisit':143B 'richard':97B 'secur':202B 'see':254B 'sign':270B 'simon':9A,118B 'sought':181B 'southern':171B 'sponsor':280B 'street':58B,157B 'stun':79B 'talk':274B 'televis':69B 'thought':83B 'tumultu':161B 'tv':144B 'ultim':207B 'version':28B 'vietnam':179B 'viewer':77B 'violenc':63B,154B 'war':190B 'watch':43B,246B 'whether':241B 'whole':40B,243B 'world':41B,244B 'zoom':25B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668635/hl7catwjbzdn2qo6i5gl.png","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669684/event_ics_1721669684006.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Talks"},{"id":10913,"title":"Wheels","starts_at":"2023-06-20 12:00:00","ends_at":"2023-09-23 12:00:00","body":"
Set your \"wheels in motion\" with this exhibition that showcases the diversity of the Newberry's collections.

What happens when you search for “wheels” in the Newberry’s catalogs? The exhibition features maps, manuscripts, paintings, printed books, paintings, automata, and woodcuts dating from 1250 to 1800, the majority of which are part of the Newberry’s vast collections.

Long before the term “race” came into use, people categorized each other through distinctions like language, dress, class, geography, and religion—in addition to traits like skin color or facial features. While the exhibition includes loan items from as far away as India and South America, it focuses primarily on “Western” perspectives because the system of race that we experience today largely developed through the decisions, ideas, and actions of premodern Europeans.

\"Traditional scholarship in Europe and North America has often overlooked race as a social construct prior to the trans-Atlantic trafficking in enslaved Africans,” said Lia Markey, Director of the Center for Renaissance Studies at the Newberry Library. “Seeing Race Before Race looks at the medieval and Renaissance periods and centers the expertise, perspectives, and sociopolitical interests of BIPOC scholars. The Newberry is uniquely positioned to spark dialog and bring this work to life in the form of an exhibition.”

Among the highlights of the exhibition is a 1477 edition of Parsival, an Arthurian romance from the twelfth century featuring a biracial character, that reveals medieval ideas about the relationship between physical features and certain behaviors. Tarih-i Yeni Dünya, el-musemma be hadis-i nev is a luxury manuscript (ca. 1600) from Ottoman Turkey that features an image of light- and dark-skinned individuals standing back-to-back at the Potosí silver mine in what is now Bolivia. A sixteenth-century book by Nicholas de Nicolay examines clothing as an aspect of racial identity. A Letter from a Merchant at Jamaica to a Member of Parliament in London (1709) is among the items that shows how Indigenous peoples and enslaved Africans resisted the violent tactics of colonizers. Despite advocating for the reform—not abolition—of slavery, the printed pamphlet includes an enslaved African’s eulogy for a murdered “Fellow-Negro,” which argues poetically for Black rights.

Seeing Race Before Race draws on the pathbreaking work of the Newberry’s partners in the RaceB4Race research collective. The exhibition’s curators are:

Noémie Ndiaye, Associate Professor of English at the University of Chicago

Lia Markey, Director of the Center for Renaissance Studies at the Newberry Library

Christopher Fletcher, Assistant Director of the Center for Renaissance Studies

Rebecca L. Published between 1837 and 1844, the book features 120 portraits of Indigenous people, mostly tribal leaders visiting Washington, DC, as part of official delegations to the federal government. In this exhibition, you can view the work as it is rarely seen, in its original form of publication: in twenty fascicles, large pamphlets intended to be dismantled and reassembled into more permanent bindings by their purchasers. While the fascicles were produced and distributed in a time of great upheaval, dispossession, and conflict for Indigenous peoples in the United States, many of the images they contain have remained a source of intertribal solidarity and pride.

CURATOR

Will Hansen, Roger and Julie Baskes Vice President for Collections and Library Services, and Curator of Americana

HOURS

Tuesday – Thursday
10am – 7pm

Friday and Saturday
10am – 5pm

Admission for Newberry exhibitions is free. Names like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Mort Sahl, Steve Martin, Lily Tomlin, and Richard Pryor regularly graced the marquee of Mister Kelly's. The exhibit features photographs, news clippings, selected writings, and ephemera drawing from the Mike Royko Papers at the Newberry. Royko’s career spanned five decades in an era when Chicago was a city of newsprint, long before the days of social media and the 24-hour cable news cycle.

Chicago Style: Mike Royko and Windy City Journalism is curated by Sarah Boyd Alvarez, Director of Exhibitions, Newberry Library; Kristin Emery, Director of Governance and Strategic Initiatives, Newberry Library; and Bill Savage, Professor of Instruction, English Department, Northwestern University. Royko’s widow, Judy Royko, donated the Royko Papers to the Newberry in 2005, and she helped plan the show with some of her late husband’s former colleagues.

Best known for his daily column, Royko wrote for the Chicago Daily News from 1959 until the paper’s closure in 1978. He then joined the Chicago Sun-Times and later wrote for the Chicago Tribune until his death in 1997. Royko thought of himself as a reporter first and foremost, and his distinctive perspective on local politics and issues that mattered to fellow Chicagoans drew an audience of countless loyal readers. Eventually, national syndication gave him an audience far beyond the Chicago area. Royko’s 1971 book, Boss, about Mayor Richard J. Daley, was a best-seller that has never gone out of print.

Exhibitions at the Newberry are free and open to all. Bughouse Square, as Washington Square Park is famously known, was once a cow pasture where farmers would bring their cattle for water. For whom were these “Blessings of Liberty” to be secured? Under what circumstances could individuals expect the inalienable right of liberty to be recognized? What justifies limitations on liberty, and what does a dedication to liberty demand of us?

Though Americans grappled with these issues in all times and places, nothing crystallized the tensions around liberty quite like war. President Abraham Lincoln, in his address at the newly dedicated Gettysburg National Cemetery in the midst of the Civil War, centered his reflection on this very question: “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” At the site of so much death and destruction, he wondered whether a nation, “so conceived and so dedicated can long endure.”

Conceived in Liberty: Cartoons, Caricatures, and Illustrations in the Wartime US, 1812-1918 will draw on the Newberry’s collection to show how artists living through wartime “conceived” cartoons, caricatures, and illustrations that grappled with questions about liberty. These images appeared throughout broader print culture (newspapers, magazines, sheet music, broadsides, posters) as well as in more private contexts, such as diaries, letters, or sketchbooks. Whether patriotic or dissenting, available to the masses or only to a few, wartime imagery reveals in dramatic, visually compelling ways how the people of the US have used the occasion of war to question, revise, challenge, and champion this core value of the country since its founding 250 years ago.

DETAILS
","type":null,"state":"published","slug":"conceived-in-liberty-cartoons-caricatures-and-illustrations-in-the-wartime-us-1812-1918","created_at":"2026-06-16 20:25:03.297","updated_at":"2026-06-16 20:25:03.297","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":120,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'-1918':13A,232B '1776':15B '1812':12A,231B '250':332B 'abraham':142B 'address':146B 'ago':173B,334B 'american':122B 'among':49B 'appear':260B 'around':136B 'artist':243B 'avail':288B 'bless':54B,86B 'broader':262B 'broadsid':269B 'brought':176B 'caricatur':5A,224B,249B 'cartoon':4A,223B,248B 'cemeteri':153B 'center':161B 'challeng':320B 'champion':322B 'circumst':94B 'civil':159B 'collect':239B 'compel':303B 'conceiv':1A,184B,213B,220B,247B 'constitut':47B 'contest':73B,78B 'context':277B 'contin':180B 'continu':75B 'core':324B 'could':95B 'countri':68B,328B 'creat':196B 'crystal':133B 'cultur':264B 'day':81B 'death':204B 'declar':17B 'dedic':66B,115B,150B,188B,216B 'defin':20B 'demand':118B 'destruct':206B 'detail':335B 'diari':280B 'dissent':287B 'dramat':301B 'draw':234B 'end':36B 'endur':219B 'equal':197B 'expect':97B 'father':175B 'five':32B 'forth':177B 'found':42B,331B 'four':168B 'generat':43B 'gettysburg':151B 'grappl':123B,253B 'happi':30B 'illustr':7A,226B,251B 'imag':259B 'imageri':298B 'immedi':72B 'inalien':99B 'independ':19B 'individu':96B 'issu':126B 'justifi':107B 'letter':281B 'liberti':3A,25B,56B,70B,88B,102B,110B,117B,137B,186B,222B,257B 'life':24B 'like':139B 'limit':108B 'lincoln':143B 'live':244B 'long':218B 'magazin':266B 'mass':291B 'meant':64B 'men':194B 'midst':156B 'much':203B 'music':268B 'nation':152B,183B,211B 'new':46B,182B 'newberri':237B 'newli':149B 'newspap':265B 'noth':132B 'occas':314B 'patriot':285B 'peopl':307B 'place':131B 'poster':61B,270B 'presid':141B 'print':263B 'privat':276B 'proposit':191B 'pursuit':28B 'question':167B,255B,318B 'quit':138B 'ratifi':44B 'recogn':105B 'reflect':163B 'reveal':299B 'revis':319B 'revolutionari':39B 'right':22B,100B 'score':169B 'secur':52B,91B 'seven':171B 'sheet':267B 'show':241B 'sinc':329B 'site':200B 'sketchbook':283B 'tension':135B 'thing':51B 'though':121B 'throughout':261B 'time':129B 'unalien':21B 'us':11A,120B,230B,310B 'use':312B 'valu':325B 'visual':302B 'war':40B,140B,160B,316B 'wartim':10A,229B,246B,297B 'way':304B 'well':272B 'whether':209B,284B 'wonder':208B 'year':33B,172B,333B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1763582262/qbep44mwk5cf0euygjrk.jpg","calendar":null,"carousel":false,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":33477,"title":"NewberryFest: 250 Years of the United States","starts_at":"2026-07-18 10:00:00","ends_at":"2026-07-18 14:00:00","body":"
Jul 18, 2026

10:00am–2:00pm

At the Newberry – Ruggles Hall

Celebrate all things Newberry with collection presentations, hands-on activities, tours, a mini used book sale, and so much more at this open house event. Using the exhibition as a springboard, writers and contributors from The Onion and The New Yorker will bring the conversation into the present day, exploring how satire is crafted, circulated, and received in today’s fast-moving media landscape.

This discussion focuses on the enduring mechanics of satire, its targets, its techniques, and its cultural impact. Panelists will reflect on how their own practices echo (or diverge from) historical traditions, revealing how, in many ways, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Moderated by Colin Barr of the University of Notre Dame, whose scholarship bridges Irish and English history, the conversation offers audiences a unique opportunity to connect the incisive humor of the 18th century with the satirical voices shaping public discourse today. Whether you’re a longtime fan of contemporary satire or newly curious, this program invites you to see both past and present with fresh eyes.

About the Panelists

Colin Barr (Moderator) is professor of modern Irish history in the Keough School of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame and the Thomas Moore and Judy Livingston Director of the Keough School’s Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies. Barr was born in Canada and raised in the United States. He holds a B.A. from Stonehill College and a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge, and has held academic appointments in Ireland, the United States and the United Kingdom. Barr’s work seeks to place the history of the island of Ireland and its peoples in the widest possible context, including that of the United Kingdom, the continent of Europe, the Roman Catholic Church and the global Irish Diaspora.

Tom Bachtell is a freelance cartoonist and caricaturist and illustrator.
