Working from the 1930s through the 1990s, Levitt roamed the Lower East Side, Spanish Harlem and other urban neighborhoods, capturing fresh and unstudied views of everyday city life. Her photographs portray mothers hovering as their children play, pedestrians making their way along busy sidewalks, and neighbors visiting on stoops, among other scenes. Rarely do any of the figures in Levitt’s work, child or adult, engage directly with the photographer or strike a premeditated pose; much more frequently they seem to be occupied completely in their own worlds. Her photographs, first in black and white and later in color, observe people of every age, race and class without attempting to impose social commentary. Organized by the Telfair Museums and the High Museum of Art, Atlanta. He repurposed a stationary high-speed camera (normally used to capture fleeting subjects) to record sixteen hours of footage. Shooting six-second clips, the maximum length of time that the camera can record at such a high resolution, he then greatly slowed his source material, and edited down the results to 61 minutes of steady, continuous motion—which, if shown in real time, would last only three minutes. The accompanying musical score was composed and performed by Sonic Youth co-founder Thurston Moore on a 12-string acoustic guitar.
\r\n\r\n
Pendulum, which follows the arc of a concrete sphere swinging in the deserted streets of Tribeca, was filmed on Super 8 just a few years after Nares moved to the city. Examining the motion of an object in space, the mesmerizing film celebrates the freedom of flight and provides context for Nares’ broader oeuvre of films and videos, which reveal preoccupations with movement, rhythm and repetition. Curated by Lisa Sutcliffe, Curator of Photography and Media Arts.
\r\n","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"james-nares-in-the-city","created_at":"2018-10-22 20:39:36.990629","updated_at":"2018-10-22 20:39:36.990629","excerpt":null,"is_timeless":false,"organization_id":489,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'12':182B '1940s':23B '1974':65B '1976':48B '61':38B,147B '8':50B,206B 'accompani':165B 'acoust':184B 'actualit':80B 'adopt':74B 'arc':190B 'art':261B 'artist':25B 'broader':238B 'came':60B 'camera':101B,126B 'captur':105B 'celebr':228B 'cinema':81B 'citi':5A,20B,33B,88B,216B 'clip':118B 'co':176B 'co-found':175B 'compos':169B 'concret':193B 'contemporari':24B 'context':235B 'continu':151B 'curat':252B,256B 'definit':42B 'describ':66B 'desert':198B 'detail':86B 'drew':11B 'edit':142B 'examin':217B 'film':203B,227B,241B 'find':28B 'fleet':106B 'flight':232B 'follow':188B 'footag':113B 'founder':177B 'freedom':230B 'great':136B 'guitar':185B 'helen':9B 'high':41B,99B,132B 'high-definit':40B 'high-spe':98B 'home':75B 'hour':111B 'hypnot':37B 'innov':92B 'inspir':13B,76B 'jame':1A,26B 'last':160B 'length':121B 'letter':71B 'levitt':10B 'life':90B 'lisa':254B 'london':58B 'love':70B 'materi':140B 'maximum':120B 'media':260B 'mesmer':226B 'minut':39B,148B,163B 'moor':179B 'motion':152B,219B 'move':213B 'movement':248B 'mundan':85B 'music':166B 'nare':2A,27B,54B,82B,212B,237B 'nativ':56B 'new':18B,62B 'normal':102B 'object':222B 'oeuvr':239B 'pendulum':53B,186B 'perform':171B 'photograph':8B 'photographi':258B 'pioneer':78B 'preoccup':246B 'provid':234B 'real':157B 'record':83B,109B,128B 'repetit':251B 'repurpos':95B 'resolut':133B 'result':145B 'reveal':245B 'rhythm':249B 'score':167B 'second':117B 'shoot':114B 'short':51B 'shown':155B 'six':116B 'six-second':115B 'sixteen':110B 'slow':137B 'sonic':173B 'sourc':139B 'space':224B 'speed':100B 'sphere':194B 'stationari':97B 'steadi':150B 'street':16B,34B,44B,67B,89B,199B 'string':183B 'subject':30B,107B 'super':49B,205B 'sutcliff':255B 'swing':195B 'technolog':93B 'three':162B 'thurston':178B 'time':123B,158B 'tribeca':201B 'use':91B,103B 'video':43B,243B 'would':159B 'year':210B 'york':19B,63B 'youth':174B","thumbnail":null,"calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669403/event_ics_1721669403615.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":4469,"title":"Milwaukee Collects","starts_at":"2017-03-10 20:00:00","ends_at":"2017-05-21 21:00:00","body":"
Drawings from both well-known collections and newly discovered gems, the exhibition features artworks that span centuries, media, and artistic styles. The new exhibitionComing Away: Winslow Homer and England, opening March 1 and on view through May 20, 2018 at the Milwaukee Art Museum, explores how English artists and Homer’s nearly two-year stay in the seaside village of Cullercoats, England, impacted the style and subjects of the artist’s work for the rest of his career.
\r\n\r\n
Fifty works by Winslow Homer are featured in the exhibition, including a selection of some of his most famous early scenes of independent farmers and outdoorsmen, as well as women at leisure and mischievous country children at play. Displayed alongside the art that Homer developed while in Cullercoats and the dramatic seascapes that marked his career after he returned to the United States, the exhibition demonstrates the great shift in Homer’s painting that his time in England inspired.
\r\n\r\n
The exhibition brings together many of Homer’s most beloved and famous works, such as The Cotton Pickers, on loan from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The Lifeline from the Philadelphia Museum of Art; and the Musée d'Orsay’s Summer Night; as well as many of the artist’s late seascapes that so deeply influenced American modernists. Also included are paintings by Lawrence Alma-Tadema, George Henry Boughton, Jules Adolphe Breton and Joseph Mallord William Turner—works that show the range of international influences that Homer embraced—alongside English photographs, which Homer consumed and became fascinated with during his stay abroad.
\r\n<style Their images of family life often maneuver between intimate, everyday stories and broader political realities, between the universal human condition and the particular histories of race in the United States. As Lawson says of her work, “Every day is political, the everyday is personal.”

A touchstone for several of the artists in the exhibition is the work of Roy DeCarava (American, 1919-2009). Coming of age in Harlem during the 1940s, DeCarava reacted against what he saw as superficial stereotypes and “sociological” studies of his neighborhood by mostly white outsiders. With the aid of a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1952, the artist set out to create expressive photographs of life in his community. He eventually published 140 pictures along with text by Langston Hughes in The Sweet Flypaper of Life (1955), a fictional family album that tenderly captures intimate moments of domestic life both in Harlem and seemingly everywhere.

Organized by the Columbus Museum of Art

Supporting Sponsor:Milwaukee Art Museum’s African American Art Alliance
Exhibitions in the Herzfeld Center for Photography and Media Arts sponsored by:Herzfeld FoundationMadeleine and David Lubar

","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"family-pictures","created_at":"2018-10-22 20:44:01.529863","updated_at":"2019-01-03 20:24:23.605082","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":489,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'-2009':155B '140':208B '1919':154B '1940s':163B '1952':191B '1955':48B,222B 'african':254B 'age':158B 'aid':185B 'album':226B 'allianc':257B 'along':210B 'american':153B,255B 'art':9B,247B,251B,256B,267B 'artist':20B,68B,143B,193B 'ashton':76B 'begin':39B 'black':17B 'blood':29B 'book':49B 'broader':105B 'captur':229B 'carri':90B 'center':4B,262B 'close':33B 'close-knit':32B 'columbus':244B 'come':156B 'communiti':38B,204B 'condit':112B 'creat':197B 'david':273B 'day':130B 'deana':78B 'decarava':42B,152B,164B 'domest':233B 'edmond':71B 'eventu':206B 'everi':129B 'everyday':102B,134B 'everywher':240B 'exhibit':56B,146B,258B 'explor':12B 'express':198B 'famili':1A,10B,26B,96B,225B 'fellowship':189B 'fiction':224B 'flypap':52B,219B 'foundationmadelein':271B 'frazier':74B 'gather':57B 'gordon':83B 'gradi':82B 'groundbreak':47B 'group':66B 'guggenheim':188B 'harlem':160B,237B 'harri':77B 'herzfeld':3B,261B,270B 'histori':116B 'hugh':45B,215B 'human':111B 'imag':94B 'includ':69B 'instal':60B 'intergener':65B 'intim':101B,230B 'john':70B 'knit':34B 'langston':44B,214B 'latoya':72B 'lawson':79B,124B 'life':54B,97B,201B,221B,234B 'lorrain':80B 'lubar':274B 'lyle':75B 'mae':91B 'maneuv':99B 'media':8B,266B 'milwauke':250B 'ming':87B 'moment':231B 'most':180B 'museum':245B,252B 'neighborhood':35B,178B 'o':81B 'often':98B 'organ':241B 'outsid':182B 'park':84B 'particular':115B 'perri':86B 'person':136B 'photograph':18B,58B,199B 'photographi':6B,264B 'pictur':2A,11B,209B 'polit':106B,132B 'portray':22B 'publish':207B 'queer':37B 'race':118B 'rang':24B 'react':165B 'realiti':107B 'relat':30B 'relationship':27B 'roy':41B,151B 'rubi':73B 'saw':169B 'say':125B 'seem':239B 'seri':59B 'set':194B 'sever':140B 'smith':88B 'sociolog':174B 'sondra':85B 'sponsor':249B,268B 'state':122B 'stereotyp':172B 'stori':103B 'studi':175B 'superfici':171B 'support':248B 'sweet':51B,218B 'tender':228B 'text':212B 'touchston':138B 'unit':121B 'univers':110B 'video':62B 'way':14B 'weem':92B 'white':181B 'work':128B,149B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668458/hnx76bpej2vpucmfbhnp.jpg","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669523/event_ics_1721669523255.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":6632,"title":"Serious Play: Design in Midcentury America","starts_at":"2018-09-28 19:00:00","ends_at":"2019-01-06 20:00:00","body":"
Serious Play: Design in Midcentury America explores the projects of over 40 designers who advocated for playfulness and whimsy within their creations for corporations, domestic interiors, and children. The exhibition and accompanying catalogue celebrate the key projects of this prolific, perpetual inventor and establish Nares as an important contemporary artist.
","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"nares-moves","created_at":"2019-05-17 18:57:22.286323","updated_at":"2019-05-17 18:57:22.295002","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":489,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'14':4B,51B '1953':27B '2019':7B,55B '6':6B,54B 'accompani':87B 'addit':57B 'also':67B 'art':45B 'artist':23B,75B,82B,105B 'b':26B 'baker/rowland':8B 'base':22B 'bring':33B 'career':32B 'catalogu':88B 'celebr':89B 'central':79B 'contemporari':18B,104B 'depth':73B 'establish':99B 'exhibit':39B,85B 'explor':71B 'film':77B 'first':14B,61B,69B 'galleri':9B 'import':103B 'inventor':97B 'jame':24B 'june':3B,50B 'key':91B 'milwauke':44B 'motion':34B 'move':2A,11B 'museum':46B 'nare':1A,10B,25B,64B,100B 'new':19B 'octob':5B,53B 'organ':41B 'perpetu':96B 'practic':83B 'premier':49B 'project':92B 'prolif':95B 'retrospect':15B,62B 'reveal':29B 'signific':31B 'spotlight':37B 'york':21B 'york-bas':20B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668266/bqwklraco4xa3zy6fss4.jpg","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669336/event_ics_1721669336347.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":1300,"title":"Petite Posters: Jules Chéret and Le Courrier français","starts_at":"2019-06-28 12:00:00","ends_at":"2019-11-17 12:00:00","body":"

June 28–November 17, 2019

European Art Galleries, Level 2, Gallery S202

From its first issue, in 1884, the weekly journal Le Courrier français championed advertising. On view in the Museum’s Bradley Family Gallery, the exhibition features more than 40 woven objects by the Los Angeles-based artist who has helped reshape the traditional medium of weaving into a contemporary art form.

Though Matson (b. 1979) works with textiles, the artist views herself as a painter. Using a digital jacquard loom and her knowledge of historic weaving techniques, Matson creates woven pictures that are rooted in minimalism, abstraction, and decoration and are intended to hang on the wall. Through his work, Ellis examined themes including domestic life, selfhood, and stereotypes of Black masculinity and anticipated current artistic interest in appropriation, archive, and personal narrative. Co-organized by the Baltimore Museum of Art and The Bronx Museum of the Arts, this expansive presentation features over 120 works and objects that offer an intimate view into the work and practice of an artist whose life and career were cut short by his death from AIDS-related causes at age 33.Darrel Ellis: Regeneration will be on view in the Herzfeld Center for Photography and Media Arts October 20, 2023–January 14, 2024.

“Darrel Ellis is a prime example of someone whose work expands the possibilities of contemporary art,” said Marcelle Polednik, Ph.D., Donna and Donald Baumgartner Director of the Milwaukee Art Museum. “This exhibition continues the Museum’s commitment to championing the work of artists who deserve to be recognized for the contributions they have made to the field. As the only Midwest venue for this impactful survey, we are excited to share Ellis’s long under-recognized career with our visitors.”

Ellis’s work garnered critical acclaim and was featured in more than 20 group exhibitions in New York and Europe, including the 1989 exhibition Witnesses: Against Our Vanishing organized by Nan Goldin at Artists Space. Following Ellis’s untimely death, his work was included in the Museum of Modern Art’s New Photography 8 exhibition in 1992. Since that time, his work has received scarce attention. Bringing a new curatorial perspective to his oeuvre, Darrel Ellis: Regeneration is the first museum-organized monographic exhibition of the artist’s highly original body of work.

“Ellis created new works from his father’s photographs through darkroom manipulation, reframing—or as the exhibition’s title suggests, regenerating—narratives around family and identity,” said Ariel Pate, Assistant Curator of Photography, at the Milwaukee Art Museum. “This significant exhibition offers an opportunity to look closely at Ellis’s distinctive studio practice and understand how he thoughtfully transformed photographs taken by himself and others to create profoundly deep and personal works.”

Darrel Ellis: Regeneration is curated by Dr. Antonio Sergio Bessa, chief curator emeritus at The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Leslie Cozzi, curator of prints, drawings, and photographs at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Additional research for this project was provided by Bronx Museum Curatorial Fellow Kyle Croft.

Exhibition Highlights include:

Self-Portrait after Photograph by Peter Hujar, 1989, a self-portrait by Ellis inspired by a photograph taken by Peter Hujar.

Untitled (Mother, Father, and Laure), 1990, an example of Ellis’s analog photographic experiments re-interpreting his father’s negatives.

Untitled (Katrina Styling Susan’s Hair), ca. 1985–1988, which pays homage to the domestic scenes of 19th-century French painters such as Édouard Vuillard and embodies Ellis’s efforts to reinscribe Black families into the traditions of Western art history.

Untitled (Woman with Leopard Skin), ca. 1988–1991, an experiment with color photography and color film that demonstrates Ellis’s innovative approach and openness to new materials.

Programming

Member Preview Day

Thursday, October 19, 10 a.m.–8 p.m.

Members explore the exhibition before it opens to the public

Haberman Local Luminaries

Thursday, October 26, 6:15–7:15 p.m.

Meet notable local figures from the queer and HIV/AIDS activism communities in the gallery as they share their viewpoints on works in the exhibition.

Sponsored by: Milwaukee Art Museum’s African American Art Alliance and Photography Council

Expert Series: Curators Dr. Antonio Sergio Bessa and Dr. Leslie Cozzi

Thursday, November 30, 6:15–8 p.m.

Hear about the experience of organizing this first comprehensive museum exhibition of Darrel Ellis’s work from the curators. Additional essays are authored by Dr. Makeda Best, deputy director of curatorial affairs at the Oakland Museum of California, who examines Ellis’s practice in the context of historical and conceptual photography, and by photographer and friend Allen Frame, who creates a timeline of Ellis’s important relationships with other artists. The artist sources his subject matter from the media to create ambitiously scaled charcoal drawings that reflect on the construction of symbols of power and authority, including images of animals and nature as well as global conflicts and protest movements.

Though based on images from various media sources, Longo’s meticulous drawings are not exact transcriptions. Instead, he combines elements from multiple source images with art historical archetypes and compositional elements in an effort to create what the artist considers “a perfect image.” Through their monumental scale and technical precision, the images he depicts invite viewers to slow down and reflect on the subject matter.

The exhibition presents nearly 40 monumental drawings, sculptures, and videos created by the artist over the past decade, prominently featuring The Destroyer Cycle series that Longo began in 2014. It also includes drawings from his other bodies of work, such as the Hungry Ghosts and Gang of Cosmos series.

The first solo presentation of the artist’s work in the Midwest in more than three decades, Robert Longo: The Acceleration of History was curated by Margaret Andera, senior curator of contemporary art at the Milwaukee Art Museum.

Image: Robert Longo (American, b. 1953), Untitled (American Eagle 2017), 2017.
