She is a graduate of Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Combined Degree Program, where she received a BFA in Studio Art and a BS in Environmental Studies. Throughout her practice, she works with wearables, textiles, and immersive environments to construct what she describes as fabritecture, a malleable, ever-changing building system shaped by sensory and emotional experience. Her work engages questions of identity, otherness, comfort, and discomfort, as well as critiques of American productivity culture, while foregrounding the physical conditions of lived experience.

In this exhibition, Kiser also draws from the form of the Balikbayan Box, a package sent by overseas Filipinos to family back in the Philippines, as a conceptual reference point for thinking about container, care, distance, and return. The artist was an extraordinary innovator who revolutionized the medium of printmaking in the late fifteenth century.
\r\n\r\n
Trained as a goldsmith, the painter, etcher and draftsman was praised for the remarkable compositional complexity and high level of naturalism in his works. Dürer established an international reputation for his remarkable skills in printmaking, which he single-handedly elevated to an independent art form. Examples from his celebrated Small Woodcut Passion (1508-10), Life of the Virgin (1503-10), and the full set of sixteen prints from the Engraved Passion (1507-12) will be featured in the exhibition. The exhibition also includes several works by some of Dürer’s most influential contemporaries, Albrecht Altdorfer and Martin Schongauer, among others.
\r\n\r\n
Albrecht Dürer: Master Prints is organized by the Reading Public Museum, Reading, Pennsylvania.
\r\n\r\n
Sherwood Snyder was born in Sodus, Michigan and has enjoyed a significant career in the arts and theater between Southwest Michigan and Chicago. His artwork varies greatly in form, imagery and medium. However, it shares a common thread in its incredible ingenuity and use of materials.
\r\n\r\n
In 2016, Snyder was the recipient of the People’s Choice Award for the Krasl Art Center’s annual Members’ Show. His brightly hued sculptural sphere covered in layers of plastic bottle caps within more plastic bottle caps with tiny pipe cleaners inside attracted guests of all ages. Looking at the artwork and watching visitors’ responses to it, the KAC began to daydream of Snyder developing a full-scale artlab installation. We extended the invitation, and thankfully, he agreed!
\r\n<style Spirit: African Wax Prints","starts_at":"2018-03-23 21:00:00","ends_at":"2018-06-17 22:00:00","body":"
This exhibition is a tribute to the century-old handmade designs and patterns on textiles that originated in Indonesia and were copied and industrialized by Europeans and exported to Africa. Wandering Spirit: African Wax Prints traces the developmental pathway of the African wax print and tells how these fabrics reflect the stories, dreams, and personalities of the people who wear them.
\r\n\r\n
The success of the wax prints in Africa is driven by many factors, such as the culture, taste, and desires of African consumers. Clothing in Africa serves as an important means of communication, sending secret messages and retelling local proverbs. Clothing also depicts a person’s social status and position, political convictions, ambition, marital status, ethnicity, age, sex, and group affiliations. You can see up the steps and through the open door that the rest of the house is missing. In the background, someone is working on the battery-powered lights to some street lamps. Around the corner is a nature scene with a giant fake tree in the middle. An otherworldly creature – a cross between a bird and a bear – is resting near the tree. Beyond that, you see painted mountains. Now, imagine all of this inside someone’s home.

These miniature worlds form the basis of artist Joe Baughman’s stop-motion animations, the likes of which you might have seen in music videos for Wilco, The Roots, and Julien Baker as well as his own band, Joe Baughman and the Righteous Few. Born in the Midwest and currently living in Mishawaka, Baughman is a cinematographer, director, stop-motion animator, and musician. He is also a sculptor, painter, and collage artist – working with all manner of media from clay to found objects to make his creations come to life.

In a rare opportunity to see the inner workings of this stop-motion process, a selection of Baughman’s work is coming to the galleries at KAC. Sets, props, and characters will be displayed alongside the completed music videos for a true behind-the-curtain experience.

Learn more about the work on view during special tours, artist talks, and virtual events. See all exhibition programs by clicking here.

Artwork: Set and stills from Vacant Spaces by Joe Baughman.
","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"the-stop-motion-worlds-of-joe-baughman","created_at":"2023-08-11 20:46:11.387256","updated_at":"2023-09-01 20:24:49.156246","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":697,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'alongsid':235B 'also':175B 'anim':122B,170B 'around':62B 'artist':115B,181B,258B 'artwork':270B 'attach':19B 'background':48B 'baker':140B 'band':146B 'basi':113B 'batteri':55B 'battery-pow':54B 'baughman':7A,117B,148B,162B,218B,279B 'bear':87B 'behind':244B 'behind-the-curtain':243B 'beyond':93B 'bird':84B 'born':153B 'car':22B 'charact':231B 'cinematograph':165B 'clay':189B 'click':268B 'collag':180B 'come':197B,222B 'complet':237B 'corner':64B 'creation':196B 'creatur':79B 'cross':81B 'current':158B 'curtain':246B 'director':166B 'display':234B 'door':37B 'event':262B 'exhibit':265B 'experi':247B 'fake':72B 'form':111B 'found':191B 'galleri':225B 'garag':20B 'giant':71B 'home':107B 'hous':43B 'imagin':8B,100B 'inner':207B 'insid':26B,104B 'joe':6A,116B,147B,278B 'julien':139B 'kac':227B 'lamp':61B 'learn':248B 'life':199B 'light':57B 'like':124B 'live':159B 'make':194B 'manner':185B 'media':187B 'middl':76B 'midwest':156B 'might':128B 'miniatur':109B 'mishawaka':161B 'miss':45B 'motion':3A,121B,169B,213B 'mountain':98B 'music':132B,238B 'musician':172B 'natur':67B 'near':90B 'object':192B 'open':36B 'opportun':203B 'otherworld':78B 'paint':97B 'painter':178B 'past':14B 'power':56B 'process':214B 'product':10B 'program':266B 'prop':229B 'rare':202B 'rest':40B,89B 'righteous':151B 'root':137B 'scene':68B 'sculptor':177B 'see':29B,96B,205B,263B 'seen':130B 'select':216B 'set':16B,228B,271B 'sofa':25B 'someon':49B,105B 'space':276B 'special':256B 'step':32B 'still':273B 'stop':2A,120B,168B,212B 'stop-mot':119B,167B,211B 'street':60B 'studio':11B 'talk':259B 'tour':257B 'tree':73B,92B 'true':242B 'vacant':275B 'video':133B,239B 'view':254B 'virtual':261B 'walk':13B 'well':142B 'wilco':135B 'work':51B,182B,208B,220B,252B 'workbench':23B 'world':4A,110B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668653/jcijyyfwumkbgdlkl0ql.jpg","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669700/event_ics_1721669700582.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":11431,"title":"In the Lab: Mariana Noreña","starts_at":"2023-09-23 12:00:00","ends_at":"2023-11-26 12:00:00","body":"
For someone whose artistic practice is grounded in the landscape, a move to a new country might be especially jarring, but for Mariana Noreña it was an opportunity to attune to a new environment and shift her process – other key aspects of her work. Joe Matty is a photographer from Pittsburgh, PA, who is focused on the exploration, practice, and application of historical photographic processes – with not-so-historic subject matter. Matty uses 19th–century processes like wet plate collodion to recontextualize the digital, non–physical worlds of video games as physical photographs. At first glance, the black and white images of otherworldly characters and fantastical landscapes seem like they’ve been handed down from someone’s great-grandparents. A closer look reveals a jarring reality: “somewhere I’d rather be than here and now, but that has never really existed.” As Matty shares, “For many of us, the digital worlds we imaginatively inhabit feel real.” His photographs take this experience even further, turning the make-believe worlds of video games into something “materially tangible” and allowing the viewer to feel “unencumbered by disbelief.”
","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"in-the-lab-a-world-apart-by-joe-matty","created_at":"2024-03-01 20:12:59.093197","updated_at":"2024-03-01 20:12:59.101514","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":697,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'19th':43B 'allow':148B 'apart':6A 'applic':29B 'believ':138B 'black':67B 'centuri':44B 'charact':73B 'closer':91B 'collodion':49B 'd':99B 'digit':53B,120B 'disbelief':155B 'even':132B 'exist':111B 'experi':131B 'explor':26B 'fantast':75B 'feel':125B,152B 'first':64B 'focus':23B 'game':59B,142B 'gamer':10B 'glanc':65B 'grandpar':89B 'great':88B 'great-grandpar':87B 'hand':82B 'histor':31B,38B 'imag':70B 'imagin':123B 'inhabit':124B 'jar':95B 'joe':8A,13B 'lab':3A 'landscap':76B 'like':46B,78B 'look':92B 'make':137B 'make-believ':136B 'mani':116B 'materi':145B 'matter':40B 'matti':9A,14B,41B,113B 'never':109B 'non':54B 'not-so-histor':35B 'note':12B 'otherworld':72B 'pa':20B 'photograph':17B,32B,62B,128B 'physic':55B,61B 'pittsburgh':19B 'plate':48B 'practic':27B 'process':33B,45B 'rather':100B 'real':126B 'realiti':96B 'realli':110B 'recontextu':51B 'reveal':93B 'seem':77B 'share':114B 'someon':85B 'someth':144B 'somewher':97B 'subject':39B 'take':11B,129B 'tangibl':146B 'turn':134B 'unencumb':153B 'us':118B 'use':42B 've':80B 'video':58B,141B 'viewer':150B 'wet':47B 'white':69B 'world':5A,56B,121B,139B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668755/jjqroy09leb7l8rznfr5.jpg","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669746/event_ics_1721669745728.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":12394,"title":"Culture Club Happy Hour with Joe Matty","starts_at":"2024-03-07 17:30:00","ends_at":"2024-03-07 18:30:00","body":"
FREE and open to the public; Ages 18+

Let’s talk about: Red Dead Redemption 2. This quiet organization was founded by scholars Michael R. Hill and his late life-partner Mary Jo Deegan. Its focus on the historic sociologist, settlement leader, and Nobel Peace Prize winner Jane Addams and her influential network of male and female colleagues has taken many forms, including an expansive collection of artworks resulting from the expertise, training, and inspiration of the art school at the Hull-House social settlement in Chicago (Hull commemorates the name of the home’s original owner).

The Hull-House Art School, established by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr, with Enella Benedict as its first director, provided classes and studio space for youngsters and adults alike from 1893 onward to the 1960s. It was an important, but underappreciated, cultural phenomenon in Chicago. In this exhibition, artworks range from functional to fine art and include commemorative medallions, artist-illustrated books and calendars, novels, jewelry, metalwork, fabrics, ceramics, prints, maps, drawings, and paintings. On view October 4 through November 16, the exhibition features new and recent works that explore the correspondence between images and ideas, and how shadows shape perception.

For much of his career, Light has created sculptures intended for outdoor placement, where seasonal shadows become part of the work itself. Through years of photographic documentation, Light has amassed an archive of these ephemeral forms. In this exhibition, he transforms those shadow—images born of absence into drawings, portraits, and sculptures that explore possibility, imagination, and the heroic tradition.

Light explains, “Shadows inevitably exist outside of the realm of things, made purely of possibility, their presence constituted by absence. Without the burden of being a thing, they become a place for imagining, for questioning what might be.”

The exhibition demonstrates Light’s shift from a practice rooted in direct engagement with physical materials toward one informed by images and their generative potential. His process of experimentation — marked by both failures and triumphs — elevates fleeting impulses into resolved works of art.

Krasl Art Center Associate Curator Meli Bandera notes, “Andrew’s work bridges the tangible with the intangible, reminding us that absence and presence exist together in constant dialogue. His practice is both rigorous and poetic, and this exhibition highlights the depth of his inquiry into form, light, and possibility.”

Andrew Light is an award-winning, multidisciplinary artist with an emphasis in direct metal sculpture. Trained both academically and through apprenticeships, he is celebrating his 20th year of professional practice. Light has participated in hundreds of exhibitions throughout the United States and the United Kingdom, with works included in public and private collections worldwide.

For more information regarding the exhibitions, visit www.krasl.org.
","type":null,"state":"published","slug":"andrew-light-the-shadow-caster-variations","created_at":"2025-09-08 16:20:18.303","updated_at":"2025-09-08 16:20:18.303","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":697,"highlighted":true,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'16':40B '20th':277B '4':37B 'absenc':107B,140B,222B 'academ':269B 'amass':90B 'andrew':1A,14B,32B,210B,251B 'apprenticeship':272B 'archiv':92B 'art':8B,201B,203B 'artist':31B,259B 'associ':205B 'award':256B 'award-win':255B 'bandera':208B 'becom':77B,149B 'born':105B 'bridg':213B 'burden':143B 'career':65B 'caster':5A,18B 'celebr':275B 'center':9B,204B 'collect':304B 'constant':228B 'constitut':138B 'correspond':51B 'creat':68B 'curat':206B 'decad':26B 'demonstr':161B 'depth':242B 'dialogu':229B 'direct':170B,264B 'document':87B 'draw':109B 'elev':194B 'emphasi':262B 'engag':171B 'ephemer':95B 'exhibit':21B,42B,99B,160B,239B,288B,311B 'exist':125B,225B 'experiment':187B 'explain':122B 'explor':29B,49B,114B 'failur':191B 'featur':43B 'fleet':195B 'form':96B,247B 'generat':182B 'heroic':119B 'highlight':240B 'hundr':286B 'idea':55B 'imag':53B,104B,179B 'imagin':116B,153B 'impuls':196B 'includ':299B 'inevit':124B 'inform':177B,308B 'inquiri':245B 'intang':218B 'intend':70B 'kingdom':296B 'krasl':7B,202B 'light':2A,15B,33B,66B,88B,121B,162B,248B,252B,282B 'made':132B 'mark':188B 'materi':174B 'meli':207B 'metal':265B 'might':157B 'much':62B 'multidisciplinari':258B 'new':44B 'note':209B 'novemb':39B 'octob':36B 'one':176B 'outdoor':72B 'outsid':126B 'part':78B 'particip':284B 'percept':60B 'photograph':86B 'physic':173B 'place':151B 'placement':73B 'pleas':11B 'poetic':236B 'portrait':110B 'possibl':115B,135B,250B 'potenti':183B 'practic':167B,231B,281B 'presenc':137B,224B 'present':13B 'privat':303B 'process':185B 'profession':280B 'public':301B 'pure':133B 'question':155B 'realm':129B 'recent':46B 'reflect':23B 'regard':309B 'remind':219B 'resolv':198B 'rigor':234B 'root':168B 'sculptur':28B,69B,112B,266B 'season':75B 'shadow':4A,17B,58B,76B,103B,123B 'shape':59B 'shift':164B 'state':292B 'tangibl':215B 'thing':131B,147B 'throughout':289B 'togeth':226B 'toward':175B 'tradit':120B 'train':267B 'transform':101B 'triumph':193B 'two':25B 'unit':291B,295B 'us':220B 'variat':6A,19B 'view':35B 'visit':312B 'win':257B 'without':141B 'work':47B,81B,199B,212B,298B 'worldwid':305B 'www.krasl.org':313B 'year':84B,278B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1757348409/denfrwvjrad3mqqlqj8n.png","calendar":null,"carousel":false,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":23998,"title":"Fall Fête ","starts_at":"2025-10-17 00:00:00","ends_at":"2025-10-17 00:00:00","body":"
The Krasl Art Center will host its first-ever Fall Fête on Friday, October 17, 2025, at Dablon Vineyards in Baroda, Michigan—an unforgettable evening designed to celebrate creativity, community, and connection in the heart of Michigan’s wine country.

This formal evening affair invites guests to step into autumn elegance with a dress code of “Festive Fall Formal”—encouraging guests to dress up while embracing the colors, textures, and playful personality of the season.

Guests will be treated to world-class wines from Dablon Vineyards, crafted from estate-grown grapes that reflect the unique terroir of Southwest Michigan. Sanchez Rocca’s practice emphasizes materials often overlooked and systems of making rooted in care, ritual, and collective labor.

For this exhibition, Sanchez Rocca focuses on ixtle (EESH-tleh), a fiber extracted from the lechuguilla plant, native to northern Mexico. Historically used for brushes, ropes, sacks, and baskets, ixtle is closely tied to agricultural labor, land stewardship, and resistance within ejido farming communities. Drawing from knowledge shared by farmworkers in Coahuila, Mexico, Sanchez Rocca traces the material’s significance across Indigenous cultivation practices, colonial economies, and contemporary labor systems.

Through sculptural furniture, screens, and immersive installations made from raw ixtle and Douglas fir, Sanchez Rocca transforms utilitarian tools such as brooms and brushes into forms that resist usefulness.
