The Kavanagh Gallery at Fine Line Creative Arts Center in St. Charles offers new and existing artists a place to show their work. Each year, the gallery hosts six to seven exhibitions featuring art by local and national artists and artmakers. These curated shows bring together both established and up-and-coming artists, using all forms of media, in a wide range of price points. The gallery team at the Kavanagh strives to bring innovative and exciting artists to the gallery.

Fine Line Creative Arts Center is a thriving community where artists and art lovers have been experiencing, learning and sharing for over forty years. The center offers year-round adult classes for artists of all levels, from complete beginners to more advanced. Class options include blacksmithing, glassblowing, weaving, basketry, jewelry and ceramics.

His prints grip the viewer and challenge their perception of the world. Wander and Wallow: Must We Dwell is an exhibition of Lathan’s work that dwells in the fragile space between escapism, indulgence, and restraint, tracing the quiet negotiations we make with ourselves in the name of self-care. It considers how presence and avoidance coexist, and how the desire for escape can gently, almost invisibly, eclipse the needs of the self we house within. Each figure contains a smaller version of themselves, dwelling inside an exposed headspace where a ramshackle interior offers both shelter and unease. The absent crown of the larger figure reveals this inner home at a suspended moment - just before neglect becomes recognizable, before damage announces itself. Fluorescent color and halftone imagery offer their brightness and patterning to soften and obscure the somber tenderness beneath. The viewer is invited to dwell and consider the things we dwell on or with, such as ourselves, our habits, and the inner spaces we construct for care and survival. The work positions the viewer as observer, mirror, and voyeur, allowing questions of coping, presence, and care to surface without resolution. Born and based in St. Louis, Brian Lathan is an artist and educator who explores printmaking, illustration, and sculpture. He examines the dynamics of print, print ephemera, digital illustration, and sculpture, persistently exploring these media as means of expressing personal and subjective commentary and narration. Currently, he teaches printmaking at several universities around St. Louis. Lathan recently received a grant from the Regional Arts Commission for a large mural, which can be seen on Cherokee Street in St. Louis.
Wander and Wallow: Must We Dwell will open at Fine Line’s Kavanagh Gallery on Thursday, October 15, and run until November 20.
The gallery is open Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm.
A gallery reception will be held on Thursday, October 15, from 6–8 p.m. The artist, Brian Lathan, will be in attendance and speak at 6.30 pm about his art. The reception, like all Kavanagh Gallery receptions, is free and open to everyone.

The one-word title of the show, Sculpture, was chosen deliberately to allow a wide range of media choices and interpretations by artists. The result is a fantastic collection of two, and three-dimensional pieces that will inspire artists and art lovers alike.
One of the most striking pieces is called \"Her Beauty Gained Her Everything She had ever Dreamt of. . .\" by Michigan based artist Matthew Schellenberg. This seven-foot warrior woman was carved using various woods, including Cherry, Black Walnut, Ash, and Cyprus. The use of multiple kinds of wood has enabled the artist to utilize nature's color palette subtly but effectively. The result is a stunning 3-dimensional statuesque woman, with a surprise element in the back.
Sculpture at the Kavanagh is open Monday - Saturday from 10 am - 5 pm and runs until Saturday, May 8.
Like all shows at the Kavanagh Gallery, admission is free.

Using indigo and the \"fold and clamp\" technique, create stripes or simple geometric patterns that can be either delicate or bold. It all depends on how the cloth is folded and clamped. We will be working with woven cloth and t-shirts, each yielding a different look. Join us for a few hours of creative fun while seeing the magic of indigo. People with all levels of experience are welcome!

Midwest farming changes constantly. In our lifetimes there is a shift from small acreage family farms to two extremes: to both very large and very small farms. The state of Wisconsin alone is losing more than two family farms per day.
These changes in the Midwest landscape— physically and economically— moved artists Roberta Condon and Lorraine Ortner-Blake to present together two series of paintings to focus on the struggles, joys, and challenges of Midwest farm life. The exhibit is titled ”Long Time Passing,” a phrase from a Pete Seeger song.
Mom’s Reminiscences: 26 paintings in gouache by Lorraine Ortner-Blake
Ortner-Blake presents the familial view of life on the farm through her mother’s reminiscences, and the memories of her own childhood on the farm. The intimate and detailed paintings are worked in gouache with a primitive simplicity. The work distorts viewpoint and perspective and the images speak in a warm whisper tracing strong connections within the family and the roles each member took on.
American Pastoral: 26 paintings in soft pastel by Roberta Condon
As a perfect foil to Ortner-Blake’s whisper, Condon’s modern abstract works shout out the stark landscape of the Wisconsin farms and fields, presenting richly vibrant pastels in large contemporary splashes of line and color.

If you look at the work of Terry Lacy, you may think that he creates beautiful wall art using pastels. In reality, Terry is a fantastic artist who creates landscapes using his handmade paper.
Terry started working with handmade paper over thirty years ago and has continued exploring and fine-tuning the medium to produce his handmade paper landscapes. Hand papermaking is a liquid medium that allows Terry to manipulate the art into various possibilities. Using the medium of pigmented cotton fibers suspended in water, Terry makes his one-of-a-kind handmade paper pieces. He can contour the edges of each piece to follow images such as clouds, water and landforms and create multiple color variations and gradations. The finished paper piece always has a unique mat finish which would be difficult to achieve in other mediums.
Terry's work was first seen in Fine Line's Kavanagh Gallery in 2019 as part of the Voices of the Midwest show. Terry returns to the Kavanagh Gallery with a collection of 25 pieces of art depicting landscapes and seascapes saturated with color. The exhibition titled Of Sky, Earth and Water will be displayed at Fine Line's Kavanagh Gallery from April 1st to May 7th but will be closed for Easter on April 15 and 16. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am - 5 pm.
Fine Line will hold an in-person reception on Thursday, March 31st, from 6-8 pm to officially open the show. The artist, Terry, will be talking at 6.30 pm about his work and how he creates fantastic art pieces. It's a chance to meet the Indiana artist and hear about his passion for his art.
As with all gallery receptions at Fine Line, it is free and open to everyone.

A Solo Exhibition by Doug DeWitt
Ground Truthing—the act of confirmation through direct observation—is an exhibit of found-object sculptures inspired by immersions in the Midwest landscape. The work reflects patterns and forms in nature without denying the presence of humanity while evoking memories of specific places.
The sculptures combine weathered natural and manufactured objects in the search for visual harmony arising from advanced material decay. DeWitt says, \"Although I intend these works to be beautiful, I also mean to comment on the larger relationship between contemporary culture and nature.\"
Doug DeWitt is a Chicago-area artist and ecologist whose multi-disciplinary work is inspired by natural history and Midwest landscapes. Originally from northwestern Ohio, DeWitt spent many childhood hours exploring his grandparents’ farm buildings and catching crawdads in the creek near his home. He received a BFA in graphic design from Bowling Green State University in 1985, then moved to New England to experience the coastal landscape while working in Boston. Returning to the Midwest, DeWitt earned an MA in Studio Arts from Illinois State University in 1990. He designed exhibits featuring natural history, wildlife and anthropology at the Field Museum of Natural History and John G. Shedd Aquarium, both in Chicago, where his love of nature, science and history merged with his art. DeWitt exhibits his artwork throughout the Chicago region and beyond. He is currently an ecologist and land manager with Tallgrass Restoration, LLC, a private firm that restores native prairies, woodlands and wetlands, a profession that continues to inspire his art.

While today's quilts can still follow that pattern, many of them use a more freestyle approach to their design.
Not Your Mother's Quilt looks at quilting today in all its forms. Pieces from over twenty-five artists will be on show for this unique gallery show.

It’s worth coming more than once to ensure you don’t lose out, as, even though all items are usually out on opening night, things get moved around and new treasures often reveal themselves on a later day.
Fine Line will also have their annual yarn sale during the Artisan Gift Sale. With 25% of all yarn, including many items already marked down, it's a great way to stock up on yarn to knit during winter.

Olson's art grows out of an intense curiosity about how science and technology support our society. She uses her training as an artist to create art about the hidden realities of our world.
As Fermilab's (America's particle physics and accelerator laboratory based in Batavia, IL) first artist in residence, Olson worked with scientists, members of the operations crew, and numerous staff throughout the lab to learn the basics of high-energy physics and created a body of textile artwork and works on paper to shed light on both the smallest frontiers and the structure of the universe: the subatomic realm of neutrinos, quarks and leptons. Olson is fascinated by the behavior of nature's fundamental building blocks that make up all that we see.
Art and the Elegant Universe is a collection of over 20 pieces reflecting the time Olson was Fermilab's artist in residence. The exhibition includes two large textile pieces - Dark Glamour: Neutrinos I & II. These pieces use a visual metaphor of nets to suggest how detectors capture images of these rarely interacting, elusive particles. The art borrows techniques used in high fashion to project an image of dark glamour. Olson says our universe is permeated with neutrinos - nearly massless, neutral particles that interact so rarely with other matter that trillions of them pass through our bodies each second without leaving a trace. These tiny particles, studied in world-leading Fermilab experiments, could be key to a deeper understanding of our universe. Olson views this show as an ideal way to invite others with little or no technical background to explore the very underpinnings of reality itself.
Art and the Elegant Universe opens on Thursday, September 5, and runs until October 10.

Dave Sobotka turned 60 in 2022, the same year his first grandchild was born. As he is aging, he is reflecting on both his own mortality and the mortality of everything in the world. We all leave a record of our lives, and in this technological age, more and more of us have the ability to leave those records in a way that our forefathers could not have ever envisioned. Ironically, with all of the data we now can leave behind, that data will get buried in an exponentially increasing sea of future information.
It is sobering to realize that there will be no future remembrance of the vast majority of individuals who have walked this earth (117,000,000,000 and counting). One hundred years from now, who will recall us or even think about our existence, even for a brief moment?
Using scanned images as well as cellphone photography, Dave Sobotka creates digital images that speak about the mortality of all life, but also the hope found in the cyclical nature of time.
Fine Line will hold an in-person reception on Thursday, December 19, from 6-8 pm to officially open the show. As with all gallery receptions at Fine Line, it is free and open to everyone. Light refreshments will be served during the evening.

Brad Cahill is a sculptor who works primarily in stone. He is presenting his series, \"One Lone Drone\" in this gallery show. This series draws a comparison between the occupants of a typical office environment and those of a hive or colony. While some of their actions are obvious, much of their busyness can seem baffling and inexplicable, even to themselves. As a collective entity, workers are agents of production, contributing to the growth and success of a larger structure, while their individual identities and purposes often remain hidden. Cahill's therianthropic statues aim to reveal the personalities of anonymous characters and to elevate otherwise insignificant beings.
Fine Line will hold an opening reception on Thursday, June 12, from 6 to 8 PM, with both artists in attendance. This reception, like all Fine Line receptions, is free and open to everyone.
The Kavanagh Gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM, and admission is always free to view the art. Brush & Chisel will be on display from June 12 to July 10 (the gallery will be closed from July 4 to 6 for the Fourth of July weekend)

Jay Walsh is a ceramic artist who has been playing in the mud for years. Having been introduced to ceramics in high school and continuing in college, Walsh has been teaching ceramics for several decades. Walsh says the chemistry of glaze and clay has always appealed to him. For the past couple of years, he has been exploring crystalline firings. The process of crystalline glazing combines chemistry, application, and variable firing schedules. The crystals are grown on the glaze surface, much as they do in nature, reminiscent of frost on windows, agates, snow, and other natural patterns. Walsh says, “I love teaching and creating work from clay. There is always something new and exciting to learn in this art form. Rabbit holes are everywhere when it comes to ceramics. You can dedicate your life to ceramics and there is always more to explore”. Like Walsh, Carol Zack has been teaching at Fine Line for many years. Having always enjoyed finding beautiful places to explore and realizing that artistic expression is everywhere, high school and college formed the basis of her training in Fine Arts, along with teaching certification/ Zack loves playing in the paint, particularly with soft and oil pastels, both of which seem extra-sensory and immediate, and can be quickly pushed and manipulated into beautiful, colorful layers and textures with just fingers and blenders. Just paper and pastel sticks are all she needs. As she says, “The advantage to working with pastel is that it never dries, so you can leave it and return to the painting, picking up where you left off. Clean-up is also less complicated than with other painting media”.
