Through diverse media, artists have depicted animals as subjects of labor and companionship, symbols and recordings of the natural world and spiritual beliefs, and figures of our imagination, traveling between reality and myth. Organized into three thematic sections—wild, domesticated, and fantastical—Among the Beasts traces how cultural values, environmental perspectives, and cultural traditions shape these representations.

Drawing entirely from the permanent collection of the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, Among the Beasts spans centuries, continents, and vast/varied artistic traditions. Ancient pre-Columbian gold pendants, Japanese netsuke, Chinese scrolls, African sculpture, European and American prints, and contemporary paintings and photographs reveal the remarkable diversity of ways animals appear in art. Together, these works demonstrate that animals are far more than artistic subjects—they are a mirror of human beliefs, identity, wonder, and creativity. Taekyeom’s research and creative practice focus on making graphic design a more inclusive, multisensory, and interactive experience, challenging conventional views of design as a flat, vision-centered, screen- or paper-based medium. The artist blends ceramics and graphic design using a variety of materials, offering opportunities for both visual and physical exploration. Designed, Printed & Fired will illuminate Taekyeom’s process of creating printed and tactile imagery on textured surfaces across various media, while considering themes of culture, identity, and memory.

The exhibition contrasts cutting-edge technology with hands-on craftsmanship, questioning whether the collaboration between human creativity and technology truly negates the concept of “man-made.” Through hands-on experiences, Taekyeom invites visitors to engage with the tactile and spatial nature of his designs. In doing so, Printed & Fired challenges viewers to rethink the sensory and material aspects of design and the new forms that can emerge to create more accessible and engaging experiences for all.

Born and raised in South Korea, Taekyeom became interested in design through a combination of technical curiosity and creative experimentation. Taekyeom’s curiosity, combined with a personal health challenge that altered his perception of design and its functionality, has profoundly shaped his work. An internationally recognized interdisciplinary designer, researcher, and educator, Taekyeom is currently an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at Indiana University Bloomington. He earned an M.F.A. in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a bachelor’s degree from Keimyung University in South Korea. His research explores unconventional materials and alternative solutions to create tangible typography, graphics, and designed objects through digital fabrication. Drawing inspiration from the democratic ideals articulated in the U.S. Declaration of Independence and the national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner, this exhibition considers how the promise of freedom has been expressed, questioned, and reimagined across generations. Organized into four thematic sections, For the People, By the People brings together artworks from the KIA’s collection and loans of historic significance and bold contemporary voices to examine the symbols, struggles, and aspirations that shaped and continue to inform American life.

Spanning photography, printmaking, painting, sculpture, and installation-based works, this exhibition juxtaposes notable artists such as Dorothea Lange, Jacob Lawrence, Alfred Stieglitz, Hank Willis Thomas, and Andy Warhol with rising artists like Erica Lord, Julio Cesar Morales, and Cara Romero, among many others. From iconic images of migration and protest to neon text works and staged portraits that center Indigenous, African American, and diasporic experiences, the artists featured in For the People, By the People fashion and challenge the rhetoric and visual language of patriotism, social consciousness, labor, visibility, and belonging.

Simultaneously celebratory and contemplative, this exhibition invites visitors to reflect on America’s founding principles and our current lived realities. By placing historic works in dialogue with contemporary practices, For the People, By the People: America at 250 not only commemorates the nation’s 250th anniversary, but it also serves as a timely meditation on who “the people” were then—and who we aspire to be now.

Click here to see all events in connection with this exhibition.
","type":null,"state":"published","slug":"for-the-people-by-the-people-america-at-250","created_at":"2026-04-20 22:36:32.447","updated_at":"2026-04-20 22:36:32.448","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":2466,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'250':9A,18B,251B '250th':258B 'across':77B 'african':183B 'alfr':143B 'also':262B 'america':7A,16B,32B,225B,249B 'american':120B,184B 'among':163B 'andi':149B 'anniversari':259B 'anthem':57B 'articul':47B 'artist':136B,153B,189B 'artwork':92B 'aspir':113B,277B 'banner':62B 'base':130B 'belong':213B 'bold':104B 'bring':90B 'cara':161B 'celebratori':215B 'center':181B 'cesar':158B 'challeng':200B 'click':281B 'collect':97B 'commemor':254B 'connect':288B 'conscious':209B 'consid':65B 'contempl':217B 'contemporari':105B,241B 'continu':117B 'current':231B 'declar':51B 'democrat':45B 'dialogu':239B 'diaspor':186B 'dorothea':139B 'draw':41B 'endur':34B 'erica':155B 'event':286B 'examin':108B 'exhibit':64B,133B,219B,291B 'experi':187B 'express':73B 'fashion':198B 'featur':190B 'found':227B 'four':81B 'freedom':70B 'generat':78B 'hank':145B 'histor':101B,236B 'icon':167B 'ideal':46B 'ident':40B 'imag':168B 'impend':24B 'independ':53B 'indigen':182B 'inform':119B 'inspir':42B 'instal':129B 'installation-bas':128B 'invit':220B 'jacob':141B 'julio':157B 'justic':38B 'juxtapos':134B 'kia':95B 'labor':210B 'lang':140B 'languag':205B 'lawrenc':142B 'liberti':37B 'life':121B 'like':154B 'live':232B 'loan':99B 'look':19B 'lord':156B 'mani':164B 'medit':267B 'migrat':170B 'moral':159B 'nation':22B,56B,256B 'neon':174B 'notabl':135B 'opportun':28B 'organ':79B 'other':165B 'paint':125B 'patriot':207B 'peopl':3A,6A,12B,15B,86B,89B,194B,197B,245B,248B,271B 'photographi':123B 'place':235B 'portrait':179B 'practic':242B 'principl':228B 'printmak':124B 'promis':68B 'protest':172B 'question':74B 'realiti':233B 'reflect':30B,223B 'reimagin':76B 'rhetor':202B 'rise':152B 'romero':162B 'sculptur':126B 'section':83B 'see':284B 'semiquincentenni':25B 'serv':263B 'shape':115B 'signific':102B 'simultan':214B 'social':208B 'span':122B 'spangl':61B 'stage':178B 'star':60B 'star-spangl':59B 'stieglitz':144B 'struggl':111B 'symbol':110B 'text':175B 'themat':82B 'thoma':147B 'tie':35B 'time':266B 'togeth':91B 'u.s':50B 'visibl':211B 'visitor':221B 'visual':204B 'voic':106B 'warhol':150B 'willi':146B 'work':131B,176B,237B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1776724585/loygytt16u99cqdtrtg3.jpg","calendar":null,"carousel":false,"category_name":"Exhibitions"}]}
