With our first group exhibition in three years, we are excited to present this curated selection of artists from around the world to share their viewpoint on the meaning of HUMANITY.  And best of all, a percentage of proceeds from the sales of these works will benefit one of our favorite charities, the Chicago Children's Advocacy Center. Having served over 45,000 children, the ChicagoCAC is Chicago's only non-profit organization that brings child protection services, law enforcement professionals, family advocates and healing services under one roof to respond to, treat, and ultimately prevent child abuse.  

In HUMANITY, time is collapsed and made fluid as events of the past are mirrored in moments from the present. In this extremely divisive moment in history, HUMANITY demonstrates how connected the world actually is. Regardless of decade or locale, global citizens share more commonalities than dissimilarities with images depicting universal themes. From childhood to adulthood, the interior landscape of our psyche, hardships, joys and experiences portray an indomitable human spirit. 

Although many of these artists have worked in different time periods, speak different languages and have differing belief systems, the imagery espoused in their art remains consistent – love, friendship, faith, joy, ambition, spirituality, the quest for financial security, war and its effects, wealth disparity, civil rights movements, political and philosophical beliefs, as well as figures who serve as symbols of peace and hope.

From photography to paintings, sculpture and mixed media, some of the works in the exhibition are documentarian in nature and therefore factual, yet some will generate differing perspectives. Although HUMANITY presents moments in time that most will recognize, images were selected by their ability to evoke distinctive response and emotion. Author James Baldwin’s words echo through the chambers of HUMANITY:

​“The precise role of the artist, then, is to illuminate that darkness, blaze roads through vast forests,​ so that we will not, in all our doing, lose sight of its purpose, which is, after all,

to make the world a more human dwelling place.”

About Michael Kenna  

One of the most celebrated photographers in the last century, Michael Kenna's photographs are held in the permanent collections of over 100 leading museums worldwide including the Art Institute of Chicago, Bibliotheque National de Paris, Musee du Louvre Museum, National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., Victoria & Albert Museum, London, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography and many more. Michael is also a Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Lettres in France.

In the beginning, Michael worked as the assistant and printer for the renowned photographer Ruth Bernhard, making prints in her kitchen darkroom, under her supervision, along with endless conversations that shaped his approach to his craft. Michael learned a great deal from Ruth. Particularly impressive to him was the creativity she had with the negatives to achieve compositional and tonal precision. As Michael says, \"a good print should demand to be observed, constantly.”

Michael has a distinctively unique minimalist quality to the composition of his images. He takes a very deliberative and reflective path for his images enjoying slowly setting up, considering, observing, and thinking before he photographs. He has used the same medium format analog film cameras for almost 40 years and all his images are done on film preferring the “long, slow journey of the sliver medium”. Several of his images are captured on multi-hour-long exposures, loving the long exposures where he waits and contemplates. During long time-exposures, the real can become surreal.

What differentiates Michael from so many photographers is that he doesn't just take the photograph Michael makes every print himself, in his own darkroom, burning and dodging to perfect the balance and produce these jewel-like images. This process for half a century is truly unique in its consistency; photographs taken in '70's are indistinguishable from a photograph taken today all glowing to their fullest potential with Michael’s patient, attentive and caring process. Old-school he knows – but truly the work of a rare master.

The solo exhibition of original works on paper opened at our River North gallery on June 24 with a book signing of Castillo's latest novel, Doña Cleanwell Leaves Home. Books will be available fore sale in the both of our galleries as well as on our website.

In The Many Loves of Ana Castillo, Castillo has created a whimsical world of visual characters painstakingly woven with pencil, pen, sharpies and pastels, featuring series of angels, goddesses, animals and auto portraits in a distinctive and original style.

\"Whether it's dancing cats or a girl with a dove dress, a series may evolve solely from a desire to try variations of a theme. My immediate environment--quail, turtles, dogs, insects are turned up on paper. All manner of creatures and human figures, past, present, around the globe and from beyond—appear. The sun, moon and stars that give us light are also everpresent.

At times, I go within, inside where emotions from experiences dwell. They manifest in symbols, divine figures, hybrid creatures, my love and respect I’ve had for Mexican artisans and I draw Trees of Life, Talavera ceramic designs, or pre- Hispanic symbols like the Monkey Mambo series. Whether it was Beardsley’s spirit revisiting me or a desire to occupy the hours with a task that required dedication while producing calmness within, but also, finally, a pleasant object, once I began in summer, 2015, I’ve not stopped.

Born and raised in Chicago, Castillo's award winning, bestselling titles include the novels So Far from God, The Guardians, Peel My Love like an Onion, and Sapogonia, which was a New York Times Notable Book, and the poetry collection I Ask the Impossible. She has received numerous awards, including the 2018 PEN Oakland Lifetime Achievement Award, the Fuller Award for Lifetime Achievement, and this year was inducted into the Chicago Literary Hall of Fame. Ana Castillo is a powerful voice in not only the literary world but as an artist of originality and substance.

Hilton Contemporary (Formerly Hilton | Asmus Contemporary) is proud to announce a popup exhibition featuring Swiss photographer Markus Klinko. 

Klinko is currently touring the United States showcasing his latest works along with his iconic images of celebrities such as David Bowie, Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey and more.  With the announcement of the BANKSY exhibit opening today at MORGAN ARTS COMPLEX, (the home of our Bridgeport gallery) it seemed only natural to offer visitors an opportunity to view the 'other end of the spectrum'.

These two artists are polar opposites, yet both Klinko and Banksy helped shape generations - ­Banksy with his political messaging and Klinko’s imagery that changed the way fashion and brand photography was seen.  

While the England - based street artist and film director’s name became synonymous with anti-elite rhetoric, most people didn't know Markus Klinko, the man behind the camera, the one who was responsible for photographing nearly every popular scene in pop-culture in the 1990's and 2000's, whether it be a photograph of Beyoncé on her cover CD to a cover in one of many popular magazines.

Musician, Photographer, Artist.

Born in Switzerland, Markus Klinko initially spent his early years training to become a classical harp soloist, performed in recitals and as a featured soloist with symphony orchestras around the world, until a hand injury ended his career early.

Yet, in typical Klinko fashion, Markus turned this injury into a new adventure beginning his career as a fashion photographer. Ingrid Sischy, at Interview magazine hired Klinko for various shoots. Iman and David Bowie followed, giving the up and coming photographer a chance to photograph them for their respective book (I am Iman) and album covers (Heathen).

From there, he went on to create some of the most iconic album covers of his time, including Beyonce's Dangerously in Love, and Mariah Carey's The Emancipation of Mimi and also regularly featured in such publications as Vogue Italia, Vanity Fair, GQ, The New York Times, Madame Figaro, Stereo Review, and Ongaku no Tomo.

CHICAGO – Hilton Contemporary (Morgan Arts Complex, 3622 S. Morgan Street) presents “History of the Chess Queen”, an exhibition that celebrates the ingenuity, intuition, power, vulnerability and transformation of a board game that has paralleled the events of human history for 1500 years.  

Inspired by “The Birth of the Chess Queen,” a historical text examining the evolution of the chess queen by author Marilyn Yalom, the exhibition opens on Thursday, October 10 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm with a fundraising event for the 10th anniversary of the Chicago Chess Foundation.

Hilton Contemporary is proud to partner with the CCF, who for the past 10 years, has impacted over 10,000 students, hosted 70+ school tournaments, and traveled 10,000+ miles international to bring the joy and benefits of chess to communities around the world. Their programs utilize the game of chess to transmit academic, social-emotional, and leadership development skills.

Inspired by Stanford University Professor Marilyn Yalom’s book “Birth of the Chess Queen,” painters, sculptors, photographers, poets and multimedia artists bring a global interpretation to a game that became the reflection and evolution of human history since its inception 1500 years ago.

“Everyone knows that the queen is the most dominant piece in chess, but few people know that the game existed for five hundred years without her.” The History of the Chess Queen pays tribute to “The Queen” and her rise to become the most powerful piece on a board game that originated in 6th century India as a war game.

The Chess Queen did not always exist as an opponent. The pawns were the foot soldiers and the king had a vizier (or advisor) in the place of what we now know as the queen. The game traveled from India through Persia and the Arab lands, up through North Africa until, finally, it landed in Southern Spain with the Moors. Only until 1000 AD did the queen appear on the board. She held little power. Just like the vizier, she could only move one space at a time. Fast forward to the 15th Century, as Queen Isabella of Castile was the most powerful woman in the world, the chess queen evolved to become the most powerful piece on the board.

The exhibition traces the evolution of this now-crucial piece that mirrors many of the trials and tribulations of human beings. Intelligence, grace, and elegance are central themes to the show. This exhibition attempts to display the evolution of a simple board game that originated with an all male cast to how the most powerful character evolved to become the only female member of game.
