Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, He took up photography at an early age and as a 20-year-old found himself working as a photographer for The London Times on the pitch at the World Cup Final in Mexico City. On that day, David took the famous picture of Diego Maradona holding the World Cup and, as a result, was subsequently asked to cover the Olympics and numerous other sporting events. He gave us each a canto by Dante Alighieri as a springboard to the poems we would all write. So I ran with his concept and invited some of the finest poets in the world. Superstars such as Giuseppe Conte, Ana Castillo, Reginald Gibbons, Ed Roberson, Elise Paschen, Parneshia Jones and Osama Esber to name a few. The poets read their works in English and in the their native language. From Italian to Spanish, French, Turkish, Greek, Arabic and Hebrew, we covered a spectrum of languages and cultures.

Osama's biography reads like any scholar. He has translated works into Arabic by Henry Miller, Toni Morrison, Bertrand Russell, Seamus Heaney, Elizabeth Gilbert, Raymond Carver, Michael Ondaatje and Noam Chomsky, to name a few. In fact, Osama translated one of my favorite books, Michael Ondaatje's The English Patient, before the book became famous and made into the Oscar winning film. He has written five volumes of poetry and edited numerous books.

Osama and I lost touch for many years after, but we followed each other on Instagram (should I even admit this in writing?) and I would \"like\" his photographs from time to time. And then I realized, many of his images were mesmerizing. There was a simplicity and power that made me think of them for days and weeks after. They weren't 'hype.' They weren't the product of an artist trying to impress anyone. Or do something wild and crazy with shock factor. They were just the meanderings of a man on a beach meditating on life.

You see, Osama and his family decided to leave their country because of the war many years ago. His wife, Maha, was a television news journalist in Syria before the war; his uncle, Adonis, the most famous and influential poet of the Arab world, was nominated numerous times for the Nobel Prize in literature. They have chosen to not return to their country of birth. Yet they have not only survived but flourished in the worlds of their own making.

What Osama and his family have seen often manifests in his poetry. His poem, In The Land of Revelation written for DIVINA NATURA at the Field Museum was about the ravages of war he experienced. Writing about things may help ease the pain, the brutality of war, of loss, but also brings a sobering element to one's life. War does that to people.

Since Pearl Harbor, we in America, have not experienced buildings being bombed next door. We have not seen dead bodies piling up or heard the sound of missiles overhead. I feel very fortunate to live in America. This is where Osama and his family began to heal from the traumas of war. Of loss. Of country. Of culture. Of home.

But the other side of his story is a serene and tranquil one. The side he chooses to manifest in his life.

\"Photography has helped move away from trying to rationalize things logically. The photographs have saved me from being trapped under the influence of great literary giants.

It helped me see poetry in a different way.\"
","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"osama-esber-rituals-of-passing","created_at":"2022-08-18 03:58:22.37478","updated_at":"2022-08-18 In 1956, he fled to exile in Lebanon, where he led a modernist movement that revolutionized Arabic poetry. He moved to Paris in 1985 where he has lived for nearly 40 years. In 1997, the French government awarded him the Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters, one of the highest honors by the French Ministry of Culture, and in 2012 named him Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honor) for not only his poetry, but for his contributions as a thought leader.

“I am radically against violence – I am with Gandhi, not Guevara... A creator always has to be with what’s revolutionary, but he should never be like the revolutionaries. He can’t speak the same language or work in the same political environment.... I'm against an ideology based on a singleness of ideas...In our tradition, unfortunately, everything is based on unity – the oneness of God, of politics, of the people. We can't ever arrive at democracy with this mentality because democracy is based on understanding the other as different. You can't think you hold the truth, and that nobody else has it.\"– Adonis

Since the second half of the 20th century, Adonis has \"had a seismic influence on Arabic poetry comparable to T.S. Eliot’s in the western world.” (Jaggi, Maya. The Guardian)

“His life as a poet makes him more than a writer: he is a voice. When Adonis speaks, the rest of the world stays silent to hear his word, to feel, and to think.” ~ Donatien Grau

A controversial poet, Adonis has publicly relayed his support for women’s rights and human rights throughout his lifetime. In an effort to keep the Arabic legacy alive through constant reexamination of its tenets, he continues to explore the difficult balance between tradition and modernity.

His liberal views on freedom of religion, and freedom of thought and expression, have made him a target for the conservative, fundamentalist religious groups that have polarized much of our world.

THIS IS HOW LOVE ARRIVES is the first exhibition of his collage paintings in America.

For Adonis, his art is a visual extension of his poetry, and his dissertations on love, life, peace, war. He can fashion a small stone to look like the face of St. Exupery's The Little Prince, gazing at stars encircled by lyrical images of words written in classical Arabic script; or he can splash paint onto his canvas in a brilliant amalgamation of colors that may remind one of Jackson Pollock or Sam Francis. He has an uncanny ability to layer various materials that end up being an image we can identify with. And many of his works are simple action paintings. You can feel the movement, like a ballet.

In his poetry, Adonis calls for a “leap outside of established concepts, a change in the order of things and in the way we look at them.” His work often centers not only on the process of poetic creations but a visual narrative resulting from the depth of his imagery – imagined and realized.

Arica Hilton, founder and CEO of Hilton Contemporary and Arts Poetica, states, “This summer, I traveled to Paris twice to meet this 93-year-young man of beautiful words and profound thoughts. To encounter someone like Adonis in this lifetime is a gift. He not only revolutionized modern Arabic poetry, he IS modern poetry. And with that, he has revealed a visual dialectic that transcends languages and cultures. When I saw that twinkle in his eyes as we discussed his work, I realized, this is how love arrives. I am thrilled to welcome him to Chicago.”

<img src=\"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721419588/ozp6pg8grfax2weyouxv.jpg\" The exhibition, titled “Reverence,” calls on viewers to cherish our planet with the respect and sacredness it deserves.

Nicklen’s close, intimate portraits of wildlife bring viewers face-to-face with pumas, wolves, whales and more, revealing their roles as integral parts of an ancient order of life 4 billion years in the making. “Reverence” will be spread across Hilton Contemporary’s two galleries in River North (716 N. Wells St.) and Bridgeport at the Morgan Arts Complex (3622 S. Morgan St.). The opening reception will take place Friday, Sept. 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hilton Contemporary River North. Last September the featured artist/poet was the Nobel prize nominated, 94 year old poet, Adonis.

“We’re honored to have the opportunity to display the works of a an artist whose devotion to and love of nature is unmatched,” said Arica Hilton, CEO of Hilton Contemporary galleries. Paul's and Cristina Mittermeier’s tireless efforts to help pass legislation to protect our oceans and the life that resides within and on our earth, is an important part of our mission to exhibit works that pulsate with vitality and leave viewers with a heightened appreciation and understanding of our natural world.”

Recently featured in the National Geographic series “Photographer” alongside his partner Cristina Goettsch Mittermeier, Paul Nicklen’s new works on display feature pumas that Nicklen shot in a recent trip to Patagonia, Chile, in addition to landscape photos of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in Brazil. On display will also be Nicklen's iconic images he has long been known for such as Ice Waterfall (on the cover of Pearl Jam's GIGATON ALBUM), bears, huskies, sperm whales, penguins and others.

Raised in the remote Arctic, Nicklen developed a deep love for wildlife at a young age, nurtured by the rugged landscapes of his home on Baffin Island and the influence of his predominantly Inuit community. His childhood passion for nature led him to pursue a career as a marine biologist before transitioning to photography, eventually leading to a 20-year career at National Geographic Magazine where he documented both the beauty and the plight of our planet.

Known for enduring extreme expeditions across the world’s most isolated environments, Nicklen’s photography quickly garnered international acclaim as a voice for the voiceless and vulnerable wildlife. His evolution through the intersection of art, conservation and science spans from the shores of Antarctica to the depths of the South Pacific. Through his visceral imagery, Nicklen challenges viewers’ perceptions of nature and encourages a shared sense of kinship among all life.

Nicklen has garnered more than 30 of the highest accolades given to any photographer in his field, earning a global following of celebrities, conservationists, and fans. He has published more than 20 stories for National Geographic and has been the recipient of the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award and the prestigious World Press Photo award for photojournalism.

In the foreword to Paul Nicklen’s book “Born to Ice,” actor and environmental activist, Leonardo DiCaprio wrote:

“To witness the Arctic and Antarctica through Paul Nicklen's lens is to experience hope in action. Born to Ice showcases the life's work of an artist whose love for the landscape-and each animal in it-is so palpable that emotion echoes throughout every image. As a collection, the images build in scope and power, leaving you profoundly affected and deepening your sense of commitment to protect these stunning parts of our planet.” - Leonardo DiCaprio, June 2018

Accompanying Nicklen’s work will be photographs by his partner, Cristina Goettsch Mittermeier, also an acclaimed nature photographer who has been globally recognized as one of the most influential wildlife writers and conservationists, having been named a National Geographic Woman of Impact in 2018. Mittermeier recently debuted her solo exhibition at Hilton Contemporary in July 2024 to an overwhelming reception by collectors from around the world. The exhibition, “HOPE: A PRELUDE” has been held over until October of this year. Collectors will have one more opportunity to meet Mittermeier during Nicklen’s opening reception and Printers Row LitFest

Hilton Contemporary River North is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Bridgeport location is open Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Reverence” is free and open to the public to view. Wells, Chicago About David Drebin Born in Toronto and based in New York City, David Drebin graduated from Parsons School of Design in 1996 and quickly rose to international acclaim. His cinematic style explores themes of beauty, fame, and fantasy. Often his images portray subjects caught in moments of longing or escapism against breathtaking cityscapes and dreamlike settings. In addition to photography, Drebin is celebrated for his multidisciplinary practice. His Hidden Stars portraits playfully mask or conceal well-known cultural figures, exploring the tension between celebrity, anonymity, and identity. He has also created large-scale neon installations, light boxes, etchings on glass, and sculptures, all of which extend his visual universe beyond photography into immersive and experiential art.

Drebin’s career includes collaborations with leading global brands and publications such as Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, GQ, and National Geographic. His artwork has been exhibited at Art Basel, Paris Photo, Intersect Aspen, Photo London, Art Miami, Art Palm Beach, Istanbul Contemporary, and many more. He has also photographed high-profile individuals such as Charlize Theron, John Legend, Sandra Bernhard, Kevin Bacon, and Diane von Fürstenberg among others. Known for his striking portraits, expansive city views, and neon art pieces, Drebin creates immersive worlds that blur the line between reality and imagination. His photographs often feel like stills from a film noir, inviting viewers to create their own narratives around his enigmatic subjects. Drebin has published multiple monographs with teNeues, including The Morning After (2010), Chasing Paradise (2015), Dreamscapes (2016), and Collectors Edition (2021). His works are highly sought after on the international art market, with pieces consistently commanding record-breaking results at auction.
","type":null,"state":"published","slug":"cinematic-dreams","created_at":"2025-10-02 20:18:31.693","updated_at":"2025-10-02
