Both are interested in what happens when a word becomes an experience rather than a symbol, when calligraphy moves beyond representation and begins to embody concepts. Oda’s practice grows from Shodō, where brush, ink, body, and breath come together in a singular act. His work explores how written language can become a universal architecture of connection, while his engagement with natural phenomena transforms these words into states of movement, atmosphere, and presence. Panahi draws on the Persian tradition of Nastaliq, opening its forms toward abstraction, sound, and music. His concept of Musicalligraphy brings calligraphy and music into conversation, engaging words and ideas such as mehr—love, longing, and peace—not simply as subjects, but as ways of being. Though their vocabularies and cultural lineages are distinct, both artists treat the word as a portal into experience. Love, rain, water, and music can all become conditions of experience. The calligraphic act does not simply write the word, but becomes it.

The exhibition is accompanied by live performances by both artists on the reception night, where calligraphy unfolds as a singular act, made in the moment and impossible to repeat. Additional artist talks and workshops will take place on separate dates throughout the exhibition.

This exhibition is made possible through a collaboration between the Seldon Institute and the Heritage Museum of Asian Art, supported by the Research House for Asian Art.

Program Series: Opening Reception and Calligraphy Performance

October 16, 5 - 8 PM | $40

Research House for Asian Art

3217 S Morgan St, Chicago, IL 60608

Artist-led Tour During Open House Chicago

October 17, 1 - 3 PM | free

Research House for Asian Art

3217 S Morgan St, Chicago, IL 60608

Musicalligraphy: Immersive Workshop

October 18, 1 - 4 PM | General Admission $80

Seldon Institute Calligraphic Dialogues

October 18, 11 AM - 1 PM | free

Seldon Institute

Event registration: https://www.heritageasianart.org/2026becomingwords
","type":null,"state":"published","slug":"becoming-words-a-joint-calligraphy-exhibition","created_at":"2026-09-17 16:41:59.765","updated_at":"2026-09-17 16:41:59.765","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":2862,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":"2026-10-16 17:00:00","opening_ends_at":"2026-10-16 20:00:00","searchable":"'/2026becomingwords':351B '1':307B,328B,342B '11':340B '16':280B '17':306B '18':327B,339B '3':308B '3217':290B,316B '4':329B '40':284B '5':281B '60608':296B,322B '8':282B '80':333B 'abstract':127B 'accompani':205B 'act':85B,192B,222B 'addit':231B 'admiss':332B 'architectur':96B 'art':263B,271B,289B,315B 'artist':20B,170B,211B,232B,298B 'artist-l':297B 'asia':34B 'asian':262B,270B,288B,314B 'atmospher':112B 'bahman':21B 'becom':1A,7B,51B,93B,186B,200B 'begin':25B,64B 'beyond':61B 'bodi':77B 'breath':79B 'bring':9B,135B 'brush':75B 'calligraph':12B,17B,28B,191B,336B 'calligraphi':5A,59B,136B,217B,277B 'chicago':294B,304B,320B 'collabor':252B 'come':80B 'concept':67B,132B 'condit':187B 'connect':98B 'convers':140B 'cultur':165B 'date':241B 'dialogu':337B 'distinct':39B,168B 'draw':116B 'east':31B 'embodi':66B 'engag':101B,141B 'event':347B 'exhibit':6A,203B,244B,246B 'experi':53B,178B,189B 'explor':88B 'form':125B 'free':310B,344B 'general':331B 'grow':71B 'happen':47B 'hekiun':13B 'heritag':259B 'hous':268B,286B,303B,312B 'idea':144B 'il':295B,321B 'immers':324B 'imposs':228B 'ink':76B 'institut':256B,335B,346B 'interest':44B 'iranian':16B 'japanes':11B 'joint':4A 'languag':91B 'led':299B 'lineag':166B 'live':207B 'long':149B 'love':148B,179B 'made':223B,248B 'mehr':147B 'moment':226B 'morgan':292B,318B 'move':60B 'movement':111B 'museum':260B 'music':130B,138B,183B 'musicalligraphi':134B,323B 'nastaliq':122B 'natur':103B 'night':215B 'octob':279B,305B,326B,338B 'oda':14B,68B 'open':123B,274B,302B 'panahi':22B,115B 'peac':151B 'perform':208B 'performance':278B 'persian':119B 'phenomena':104B 'place':238B 'pm':309B,330B,343B 'pm':283B 'portal':176B 'possibl':249B 'practic':70B 'presenc':114B 'program':272B 'rain':180B 'rather':54B 'recept':214B,275B 'registr':348B 'repeat':230B 'represent':62B 'research':267B,285B,311B 'seldon':255B,334B,345B 'separ':240B 'seri':273B 'shodō':73B 'simpli':153B,195B 'singular':84B,221B 'somewher':38B 'sound':128B 'st':293B,319B 'state':109B 'subject':155B 'support':264B 'symbol':57B 'take':36B,237B 'talk':233B 'though':161B 'throughout':242B 'togeth':10B,81B 'tour':300B 'toward':126B 'tradit':29B,120B 'transform':105B 'treat':171B 'unfold':218B 'univers':95B 'visual':19B 'vocabulari':163B 'water':181B 'way':158B 'west':33B 'word':2A,8B,50B,107B,142B,173B,198B 'work':24B,87B 'workshop':235B,325B 'write':196B 'written':90B 'www.heritageasianart.org':350B 'www.heritageasianart.org/2026becomingwords':349B","thumbnail":"http://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1789589513/cnxbudwjm26qbmzpedcu.jpg","calendar":null,"carousel":false,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":36612,"title":"Calligraphy Performance","starts_at":"2026-10-16 17:00:00","ends_at":"2026-10-16 20:00:00","body":"
Celebrate the opening of Becoming Words with an evening of art, conversation, and live performance by Hekiun Oda and Bahman Panahi. For both artists, the written word is not simply a symbol to be read. Through brush, ink, gesture, breath, sound, and rhythm, it becomes an experience. Oda’s work considers calligraphy as a universal architecture of connection, shaped by the natural world and the energy of the body. Panahi’s Musicalligraphy brings Persian calligraphy into dialogue with music, abstraction, and ideas such as mehr: love, longing, and peace. Together, their works invite visitors to encounter words as conditions of presence, rain, water, music, and love. The calligraphy performance is a specially curated experience in which both artists will share their distinctive approaches to the art form. Hekiun Oda will present his unique Sekijō Kigō practice, while Bahman Panahi will collaborate with Chicago Chinese American musician Kerry Leung for a special Musicalligraphy performance. Rooted respectively in the Japanese tradition of Shodō and the Persian tradition of Nastaliq, their practices approach calligraphy not simply as writing, but as a living, embodied art form. During the tour, Oda and Panahi will share the ideas, processes, and cultural traditions behind their works. Oda will discuss his use of the brushstroke as a singular meeting of breath, body, ink, and spirit, and his exploration of calligraphy as a visual language of mindfulness, peace, and human connection. Panahi will introduce his concept of Musicalligraphy, which brings calligraphy into dialogue with rhythm, sound, and music while engaging themes of love, longing, and peace. Let's explore together what happens when a word becomes more than a symbol, when it becomes an atmosphere, a gesture, a movement, or an experience. The tour offers a rare opportunity to encounter the exhibition through the artists’ own voices and to reflect on calligraphy as a universal architecture of connection across cultures. It is an exhibition of discovery, an evolving presentation of an archive as it is being uncovered, organized, digitized, and understood.

Since 2025, the Heritage Museum of Asian Art (HMAA) has been working closely with Andy Chan’s family to preserve and study his extraordinary personal archive. Containing approximately 30,000 items, the archive includes photographs, documents, artworks, artist materials and tools, personal objects, and hundreds of hours of VHS recordings. The scale of the collection reflects the remarkable range of Andy’s life, but it also reveals something larger: a largely unknown history of Chinese American artistic and cultural life in Chicago. Andy was much more than an individual artist. His Chinatown art studio was a center for art education but also a gathering place where artists met, exchanged ideas, made work, and built friendships. Over the decades, he welcomed and hosted hundreds of artists visiting Chicago from China and elsewhere, becoming an important bridge between artists, generations, and communities. Through these encounters, his studio became an informal cultural center and a witness to a period of Chicago's Chinese American art history that remains largely unknown to the general public.

The exhibition opening on August 21, 2026, represents only the first stage of discovery. Rather than presenting the archive as something already researched and completed, HMAA is bringing the archival process directly into the gallery. Throughout the exhibition, museum staff and project participants will conduct live archiving, allowing visitors to observe how photographs are identified, documents are examined, VHS recordings are digitized, objects are cataloged, and stories are connected. As this archival work continues, the exhibition itself will remain in motion. A portion of the artworks on display will change approximately every week, bringing newly discovered or newly documented works into the gallery throughout the exhibition. Newly identified photographs, recordings, documents, objects, and stories may also be introduced as the research develops. Visitors who return from week to week may therefore encounter different artworks and discoveries. In this sense, the gallery becomes both an exhibition space and a working archive—a place where history is not simply presented, but actively reconstructed in public. This project also asks a larger question: How much of our community history remains hidden in studios, homes, closets, boxes, photographs, and videotapes? Andy Chan’s archive reminds us that history is not preserved automatically. Without the efforts of families, artists, community members, and cultural institutions, important stories can easily disappear.

For more information click here

Join us for the Mid-Autumn Festival Gathering in Memory of Andy Hoi-Csiu Chan
","type":null,"state":"published","slug":"chinatowns-renaissance-man-the-life-and-art-of-andy-hoi-csiu-chan-first-discoveries","created_at":"2026-09-17 04:52:34.426","updated_at":"2026-09-17 04:52:34.426","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":2862,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":"2026-08-21 11:00:00","opening_ends_at":"2026-08-21 11:00:00","searchable":"'000':89B '2025':61B '2026':237B '21':236B '30':88B 'activ':390B 'allow':278B 'alreadi':252B 'also':125B,161B,346B,396B 'american':135B,220B 'andi':10A,26B,74B,120B,142B,417B,462B 'approxim':87B,321B 'archiv':50B,85B,92B,249B,260B,277B,302B,380B,420B 'art':8A,24B,67B,152B,158B,221B 'artist':97B,136B,149B,166B,184B,196B,434B 'artwork':96B,316B,364B 'asian':66B 'ask':397B 'august':235B 'automat':428B 'autumn':456B 'becam':205B 'becom':191B,372B 'box':413B 'bridg':194B 'bring':258B,324B 'built':173B 'catalog':295B 'center':156B,209B 'chan':14A,30B,75B,418B,466B 'chang':320B 'chicago':141B,186B,217B 'china':188B 'chinatown':1A,17B,151B 'chines':134B,219B 'click':448B 'close':72B 'closet':412B 'collect':114B 'communiti':199B,405B,435B 'complet':255B 'conduct':275B 'connect':299B 'contain':86B 'continu':304B 'convent':37B 'csiu':13A,29B,465B 'cultur':138B,208B,438B 'decad':177B 'develop':352B 'differ':363B 'digit':57B,292B 'direct':262B 'disappear':444B 'discov':326B 'discoveri':16A,44B,244B,366B 'display':318B 'document':95B,286B,329B,341B 'easili':443B 'educ':159B 'effort':431B 'elsewher':190B 'encount':202B,362B 'everi':322B 'evolv':46B 'examin':288B 'exchang':168B 'exhibit':42B,232B,268B,306B,336B,375B 'extraordinari':83B 'famili':77B,433B 'festiv':457B 'first':15A,241B 'friendship':174B 'galleri':265B,333B,371B 'gather':163B,458B 'general':229B 'generat':197B 'heritag':63B 'hidden':408B 'histori':132B,222B,384B,406B,424B 'hmaa':68B,256B 'hoi':12A,28B,464B 'hoi-csiu':11A,27B,463B 'home':411B 'host':181B 'hour':106B 'hundr':104B,182B 'idea':169B 'identifi':285B,338B 'import':193B,440B 'includ':93B 'individu':148B 'inform':207B,447B 'institut':439B 'introduc':348B 'item':90B 'join':450B 'larg':130B,225B 'larger':128B,399B 'life':6A,22B,122B,139B 'live':276B 'made':170B 'man':4A,20B 'materi':98B 'may':345B,360B 'member':436B 'memori':460B 'met':167B 'mid':455B 'mid-autumn':454B 'motion':311B 'much':144B,402B 'museum':64B,269B 'newli':325B,328B,337B 'object':102B,293B,342B 'observ':281B 'open':233B 'organ':56B 'particip':273B 'period':215B 'person':84B,101B 'photograph':94B,283B,339B,414B 'place':164B,382B 'portion':313B 'present':47B,247B,388B 'preserv':79B,427B 'process':261B 'project':272B,395B 'public':230B,393B 'question':400B 'rang':118B 'rather':245B 'reconstruct':391B 'record':109B,290B,340B 'reflect':115B 'remain':224B,309B,407B 'remark':117B 'remind':421B 'renaiss':3A,19B 'repres':238B 'research':253B,351B 'retrospect':34B 'return':355B 'reveal':126B 'scale':111B 'sens':38B,369B 'simpli':387B 'sinc':60B 'someth':127B,251B 'space':376B 'staff':270B 'stage':242B 'stori':297B,344B,441B 'studi':81B 'studio':153B,204B,410B 'therefor':361B 'throughout':266B,334B 'tool':100B 'uncov':55B 'understood':59B 'unknown':131B,226B 'us':422B,451B 'vhs':108B,289B 'videotap':416B 'visit':185B 'visitor':279B,353B 'week':323B,357B,359B 'welcom':179B 'wit':212B 'without':429B 'work':71B,171B,303B,330B,379B","thumbnail":"http://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1789588979/amfieqib2aa3jlqht7hr.jpg","calendar":null,"carousel":false,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":36018,"title":"Mid-Autumn Festival Gathering in Memory of Andy Hoi-Csiu Chan","starts_at":"2026-09-25 18:00:00","ends_at":"2026-09-25 21:00:00","body":"
September 25- 6:00 - 9:00 PM

Pay what you can

Heritage Museum of Asian Aart

Join us for an evening of food, memories, and discovery honoring Chicago artist Andy Hoi-Csiu Chan.
