Tragedy, Memory and Honor is one of Surdo’s most powerful and historically significant works. The five panel artwork measures 9 x 35 feet. Created in response to the events and aftermath of 9/11, the painting stands as a profound meditation on loss, courage, mourning, and the endurance of the human spirit. Through its sweeping scale and emotional force, the work invites viewers into a space of remembrance and reflection while honoring the lives forever changed by that day.
Bruno Surdo is a celebrated Chicago artist known for his large-scale narrative figurative paintings and his sustained commitment to the human condition as a subject of contemporary art. Represented by Gallery VICTOR, Surdo has exhibited widely over several decades, and Tragedy, Memory and Honor has previously been shown in Chicago, including at the Daley Center in 2002 and 2003, as well as in galleries across the country. In recognition of the painting, Surdo received a letter of appreciation from former Mayor Richard M. Daley.
This exhibition will extend beyond the painting itself. In addition to Tragedy, Memory and Honor, the presentation will include artifacts from Ground Zero collected by the artist while assisting in cleanup efforts two weeks after 9/11, along with a video documenting the creation of the painting, preparatory drawings and sketches, photography, testimonials, and historical materials. Together, these elements will provide visitors with a deeper understanding of the work’s creation, its historical context, and its lasting emotional impact.
Presenting this exhibition in Chicago carries special meaning. As Surdo’s hometown, the city provides a powerful context for revisiting a work that has moved audiences nationwide. Gallery VICTOR’s historic setting offers an ideal venue for an exhibition of this scale and significance, giving viewers the opportunity to engage with a work that is not only a monumental achievement in contemporary figurative painting, but also a testament to collective memory, resilience, and compassion.
More than two decades after 9/11, Tragedy, Memory and Honor remains a deeply relevant and moving work, reminding us of art’s capacity to preserve history, bear witness to suffering, and honor the strength of those who endure.
The exhibition will premiere during the 10th Annual River North Design District Fall Gallery Walk on Friday, September 11, 2026, from 5 to 8 PM. This special evening will offer the public its first opportunity to experience Surdo’s monumental work at Gallery VICTOR on the 25th anniversary of 9/11.

\r\nSince he began showing his artwork in the 1990’s, Bruno’s work has consistently received both critical and popular acclaim. He has exhibited his work at: The Arkansas Art Center, Loyola University, The Fort Wayne Museum of Art, University of St. Francis School of Creative Arts, The Chicago Cultural Center, The Frye Art Museum, Seattle, The Mobile Museum of Art, Alabama, The University of Wisconsin. Bruno was the Founder and Director of the School of Representational Art in Chicago and currently teaches at Columbia College in Chicago. His artwork is in collections all over the world.

The paintings in Carol Pylant’s Portals series present quiet and formal spaces inhabited only sometimes by dogs or peacocks, statuary, or figures carved in relief. The titular portals are doorways and windows that open onto landscapes, some wooded, others lake views, some frozen, some misted, and yet others on fire. These places are gorgeously, meticulously rendered—once the artist’s process is understood they could also be appropriately described as painstakingly detailed. In this detail they are mesmerizing, but the illusion of reality that is presented is disorienting. Pylant is a tremendously skilled painter. The power of the works lies not only in their careful style, it is also in the construction of unnerving scenes that operate via a disjunction: although the pictured places are not real and the settings are simply not possible, there is a connection to a reality of some sort, as the works are based on actual places. It has somehow been my guide. In the last four years, during the making of this work, that connection intensified as I started writing short stories and flash fiction while taking online classes. I find the process of writing and painting so different in almost every way, but there is something freeing and generative in writing which helps my painting process. Or perhaps it's a reminder of what painting is for me - something intuitive that needs to be trusted. And what they do have in common is a desire to encapsulate and distill a single moment, a story, about the complexity of our emotions and experiences.
At the heart of my work is the recurring depiction of perseverance, strength of will, and a subtle optimism. Symbolically through the objects, precarious situations depict a moment of possible difficulty, often involving the influence of nature. A paper crane left in the snow. A boat nearly filled to the brim, but not submerged and able to drain its own contents carefully. A slide alone at night which will return to its purpose during the day. My intention is to not show the failure because I imagine all these objects make it through to better times. Allegories of survival. Someone comes by and finds the paper crane, the rowboat owners return and see their boat undisturbed, and the slide during the day brings joy.

Jan Pieter Fokkens believes in the deep lineage between modern art and the digital image. In essence, there is something foreboding about the way the history of images feeds upon itself. It appears as if reality and images are always competing to see which of the two can be the most unimaginable.

Tom Huck was born on December 9, 1971 in Farmington, Missouri and grew up in nearby Potosi. He received a BFA in drawing from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1993. He currently lives in St. Louis, Missouri where he runs his own press, Evil Prints. Tom Huck is a visual artist best known for his large scale woodcuts. His imagery draws heavily upon the influence of Albrecht Durer, Jose Guadalupe Posada, R. Crumb and Honore Daumier. He is a regular contributor to BLAB! and was the illustrator of The Roots’ Phrenology album art in 2003. Huck’s woodcut prints are included in numerous public and private collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Spencer Museum of Art, Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, St. Louis Art Museum. Milwaukee Art Museum, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Fogg Art Museum and New York Public Library.

Her Muslim American Gothic most closely resembles Wood’s, from the small Gothic style window on the house to the standing pair with pitchfork in hand. But this brightly dressed couple gives new life to the original.
Her Puerto Rican American Gothic abandons Wood’s format and shows a couple standing against a patterned background of hurled paper towels. We are made aware of the connection to the original by a pitchfork entering the scene with one impaled roll aggressively forced at the couple.
Gay American Gothic takes place in a post marriage equality world. There are no bright pride floats or angry protests, just an utterly ordinary couple posing in their living room with their prized possession—a pair of Dolly Parton’s Shoes.
Beth Foley (b. 1951)
Nashville based artist Beth Foley creates precisely detailed, humorous, and peculiar paintings. Her latest series takes a “ripped from the headlines” approach by reimagining and updating the iconic and oft parodied masterpiece, American Gothic by Grant Wood. “I’ve always loved Grant Wood,” says the artist. “When I was in art school everyone made fun of him. Then I moved to San Francisco and went to his show and I felt so validated. I love people and painting people. For this show I started looking for couples that represent America now.”

Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory is William Blake’s first Chicago exhibition. At only 28 years old, William has participated in over 40 Civil War reenactment events usually as the artist correspondent Winslow Homer. Immersing himself completely in the experience, he constructs period clothes, camps on battle fields and documents the reenactments in the way that Homer documented the war.
The resulting paintings reverberate the past with respect and with a desire to educate, honor, and play. With each annual iteration of American Civil War reenactments, the reanimation of the past encourages a review of history and aids in its continuous revision.
William Blake (b. 1991)
William Blake lives in the Chicago area. His work has been published in Fine Art Connoisseur, New American Paintings #119, and the Chicago Tribune. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Illinois and a Master of Fine Arts from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University. He has been a resident artist at the Berkshire Painting Residency in New York as well as the Vermont Studio Center. He will be the Artist in Residence at the Gettysburg National Park this summer.

Paul Durica’s involvement in the cultural life of Chicago is extensive. A literary scholar with a focus on Chicago history and culture, Durica previously held positions at the University of Chicago and the Arts Club of Chicago. He has led walking tours, organized historical reenactments, and given lectures on a range of subjects relevant to the city, including the Haymarket bombing, Studs Terkel, and the changing landscape of Chicago’s neighborhoods. He’s also consulted on public programming for the Field Museum, the Chicago History Museum, and the Newberry Library.

Still life painting takes on new relevance these days as artists respond to current events. Unable to work with live models, they must rely on objects around the studio for inspiration. Some artists are redefining the idea of traditional still life by mixing genres and styles to great effect. The artists in this show represent a diverse interpretation of modern still life paining.

Few artists capture the zeitgeist of our times with such verve and tenacity as Chicago painter Bruno Surdo. His monumental paintings reflect our daily lives in vignettes relating to human experience such as, standing in a crowd waiting for the El Train, hanging out in a café, or embracing a lover. But he also captures moments of great social and historical impact such as the events of 9-11 and the #MeToo movement.
The eighteen works featured in Ethos and Truth at Gallery Victor Armendarizare a continuation of this project, capturing a variety of themes and subjects prevalent in current society. There is, however, a major shift in some of these works. Those familiar with Bruno’s traditional approach to painting will amaze at the twisting surreal distortion introduced in some of the works. The capstone painting of the exhibit is titled A Beacon of Hope. This painting challenges the viewer to explore some of the current issues confronting our democracy while including references and symbolism from the Black Lives Matter movement and the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol Riots. Perhaps, affected by a feeling of inner distortion from witnessing a universal tarnishing of the American social experiment, the artist expiates himself by turning the brush outward
Bruno Surdo was born in Chicago Illinois. Early in his life he showed great interest in the human form and the art of the Renaissance. Bruno studied drawing as well as art history and decided to dedicate his art to expressing the human form. Throughout Bruno’s career, he has practiced mastering his craft while creating provocative works that center around the human condition. He has had numerous shows and commissions and has his work in many prestigious art collections throughout the world. He is widely known for his allegorical imagery and commitment to figurative art. Bruno incorporates many of the technical skills from the great European masters in his work and is continually exploring his technical applications. He is regularly invited to universities and art organizations to give lectures about his work and career. Bruno is also a well-respected teacher and believes in sharing his knowledge and experience with other artists and students.

As I attempt to uncover the hidden truth of the world around me, I am inevitably mesmerized by it and I hope you will be too.”
A self-taught photographer, Kirill Polevoy, first started making photographs with an old Russian film camera \"Zorki\" in 2003. In 2010, he switched to the digital format and primarily works in black and white. Kirill currently resides in Chicago, where he concentrates on street photography with an occasional landscape.

Gallery Victor is thrilled to be the first Chicago gallery to showcase the Kupjack Miniature Rooms. Eugene Kupjack (1912-1991) worked with Mrs. Narcissa Niblack Thorne on the Art Institute’s treasured Thorne Miniature Rooms. Son’s Hank (1951-2019) and Jay (b. 1953) learned the craft from their father. The Kupjack Miniature Rooms are a perfect addition to our Wunderkammer exhibit.
Wunderkammers, or cabinets of curiosities, arose in mid-sixteenth century Europe as repositories for all manner of wondrous and exotic objects, sometimes filling entire rooms. These collections mark the intersection of superstition, science, and man-made objects and are precursors to museums.
To celebrate our five-year anniversary, Gallery Victor Armendariz will transform our space into a modern Wunderkammer featuring artists: Marcos Raya, John Seubert (AKA John Dolly), Rick Farrell, Ivan Markovic and many more! Including the Kupjack Miniature Rooms.

The screeching Kestrels, comical ducks and majestic eagles included in this show are painted portrait style, with life-like detail to emphasize the anthropomorphic qualities that birds possess. In fact, Rick had military portraiture in mind when he began this series of paintings. This makes them the perfect pairing for our continuing show, The Great Battlefield, featuring William Blake’s military reenactment-based paintings.
Rick Pas paints birds with such exactitude that they might just take flight right out of their frames. Simultaneously, minute details draw the viewer in for close examination. You’ll be tempted to reach out and touch the feathers to check if they’re real…but please don’t.

Marcos Raya brings together old and new works in a variety of media that mostly explores the sociological impact of technological change. His paintings, collages and installations present an idiosyncratic hybrid of Mexican folklore, American pop-culture. His work has more affinities with Dada and Surrealism, infused with elements of Chicago-Style Pop-Expressionism and Machismo.
Through an extension of his own personal space, his frontier is filled with assemblage that takes life from the residue of crisis. His installations operate as both a self-portrait and collective history. In the context of a merging reality of medical and psychological proportions. His active space is an esthetic of abundance and display that presents traces of the ongoing struggles with urban displacement.
Raya’s edge is both intimate in a domestic construction and sinister in a spectacle of public dimension.

His latest work draws on his decades of experience to present the human form painted with skilled draftsmanship and detailed settings that provoke the imagination and stir emotion. This is Bruno - a master at his very best.
Bruno A. Surdo is a true native of Chicago. He studied drawing and art history, and pursues the mastery of the human form with inspiration from the Renaissance masters. His provocative works center around the human condition and are known for their allegorical imagery. Bruno has had numerous shows and commissions and his work is held in many prestigious art collections around the world. He lectures often and is a teacher who believes in nurturing others.The artistic forms he has created are images that communicate a personal commentary on the issue or question in mind. These shapes are then arranged in a pictorial space using the human form. Surdo strives to communicate a message to the viewer - to engage the person in a conversation between what he puts forth and what he or she can then interpret. The interchange of response and curiosity are goals the artist set when composing his ideas. Surdo believes art is a continual form of expression and he feels committed to search for a language that brings his thoughts and feelings to the surface.

Inspired by visits to artist/architect Richard Gibbons' painting studio, Gallery VICTOR is excited to share that experience with our audience. Featuring Richard Gibbons' most recent painting series, ICONS, installed in a salon-style arrangement, showcasing his figure paintings, landscapes, cityscapes and architectural models. A feast for the eyes!
Gibbons' practice mainly focuses on representing the human body and showcasing it in all of its beauty. By creating highly theatrical and dynamic pieces, Gibbons presents the viewer with an entirely new take on the concept of portraiture.
Furthermore, Gibbons' former experience with catholicism has influenced his practice, primarily in his depiction and appropriation of religious imagery.
A clear example of this can be seen throughout his \"ICONS\" paintings, where he turns \"male, previously neutered saints into sexualized beings\". and brings them into his realm.
Alongside his figure paintings, Gibbons lets his practice as an architect inform his cityscape and landscape paintings, Through this aspect of his practice Gibbons breaks from his customary subject matter and techniques, unlocking a whole new world of enthralling compositions. This versatility sets Gibbons apart and showcases all of his dexterity as a painter and as an artist.

Making Space presents a collection of 90 photographs of Chicago area artists’ studios taken by Ballogg, who has been a commercial architectural photographer for close to four decades. Excerpts from his interviews with all the artists complement full-page images on facing pages, with Ballogg taking people behind the scenes into artists’ spaces that even most art collectors have not seen.
In addition to exploring environments in which artists create, Ballogg discovered and shares how his personal experiences led to his artistic process while delving into what “making” means on a fundamental level. During a presentation beginning at 2pm, Ballogg will share some of those insights he gained from this endeavor and answer questions.
Guests also can enjoy an exhibition of selected large format images featured in the book and meet some of the artists whose studios are included in Making Space. The reception will include cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Ballogg will sign all books purchased at the event.

During a career that spans decades, Raya has become a prominent figure in the art world. He has strong roots in the Latino community and combines that influence with American Pop Art, Cubism, Dada and Surrealism.

It’s the hum of electricity just below the surface, pulsing and cracking, that influences the way we move about in the world.” Based in New York and known for his large-scale figure paintings, Hall’s work offers glimpses into the intensity and vulnerability of being human. He says, \"working at a sizable scale allows the viewer to become enveloped in the figure's deep humanity.\"
Hall's monumentally scaled work is defined by his use of dramatic lighting. In each work, he illuminates specific areas of the figure and their surroundings as the rest fades away into deep shadows. While Hall's work displays his knowledge and technique with painting realism, bits and pieces of texture pop out throughout the body of work. Highlights of selectively placed thickly painted marks bring his work to a whole new level of depth. The selective marks reward viewers as they view the work up close, until they fade into the image from afar. Hall states, \"Using both expressive and refined brush strokes of various thickness, my work uses the physical nature of oil paint to explore the balance of energy and stillness that can make the human figure come alive.\"
Nathan Brad Hall lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. With a background in both abstract and figurative studies, his focus today is on figurative oil painting, attempting to capture the light that illuminates us all. He has shown his work extensively in group and solo exhibitions in NYC and beyond and can be found in private collections across the U.S. and internationally.

To See a New Nation depicts Jean-Antoine Houdon's statue of George Washington, installed in the Virginia State Capitol. At Washington’s feet lies the severed head of the Apollo Belvedere, a neoclassical ideal, used in 19th-century racial science to visualize white supremacy.
The painting collapses enlightenment ideology, neoclassical aesthetics, and American myth into a single fractured image. During the Civil War, Washington’s image was claimed by both Union and Confederate causes, each side projecting its ideals onto the Founding Father’s image. This contested symbolism reveals how images have been used not just to commemorate virtue, but to legitimize violence and power.

Drifting is a motorsport in which drivers intentionally slide their cars sideways by breaking rear-wheel traction, controlling the skid through balance, throttle, and precision. Judged for style rather than speed, it is a grassroots, self-funded culture built on passion, improvisation, and collective effort.
Breaking takes its name from both this technical moment and Team Breaking, the Fort Wayne drifting group that welcomed Peter Lupkin into their world. Through full immersion—riding along, sharing meals, and spending long nights in garages—Lupkin developed an intimate understanding of the community that fuels the sport.

John Seubert’s work draws from Symbolism, Surrealism, Expressionism, and the raw immediacy of Art Brut, yet it forms a world entirely his own. His paintings, assemblages, and hybrid constructions transform reclaimed frames, wood, hardware, and found materials into intimate objects that feel at once handcrafted and psychologically charged. Windows, altars, carved texts, and small totemic figures recur throughout his practice, turning everyday materials into sites of ritual and reflection.
The works reveal Seubert’s belief in the emotional life of objects. Eyes peer from behind window grids, dogs stand like secular icons, flowers bloom in thick impasto, and carved heads perch on makeshift pedestals. Each piece suggests a narrative just out of reach—private, tender, and occasionally humorous—inviting viewers into a quiet world built from memory, devotion, and the poetry of salvage.
Join us this Saturday for a special artist talk with Peter Lupkin, presented in conjunction with the closing of his exhibition Breaking.
Peter will be joined by representatives of Team Breaking, the Fort Wayne–based drifting collective that inspired and collaborated on this body of work. Together, they’ll discuss drifting culture, Lupkin’s immersive “Gonzo Portraiture” approach, and the stories, relationships, and lived experiences behind the paintings.

For nearly three decades, Gallery VICTOR has represented Surdo, whose work occupies a rare space where the discipline of Old Master painting meets the urgency of contemporary life. Trained in the atelier tradition, Surdo’s practice is rooted in rigorous draftsmanship, anatomical precision, and the technical lineage of Renaissance and Baroque painting. Yet his subjects are unmistakably of our time, charged with psychological intensity and shaped by the social, emotional, and cultural realities of the present.
This exhibition offers a sweeping and immersive view into Surdo’s current direction, bringing together monumental multi-figure narratives, intimate portraits, allegorical compositions, and exquisitely rendered anatomical studies. In works such as Crossroads of Time and The Union of Different Skies, Surdo constructs densely populated urban scenes that function as contemporary stages, spaces where anonymity and intimacy collide, and where individuals exist both together and profoundly alone. These compositions recall the grandeur and complexity of historical painting while confronting the fractured nature of modern experience.
Alongside these expansive narratives, Surdo turns inward, exploring vulnerability, desire, and emotional exposure through more focused imagery. Paintings such as Daydreamer, Dreams of Hope, and Guardian capture fleeting yet deeply human moments, while works like Martyrdom of Freedom and Venus of America introduce a sharper, more confrontational edge. In these pieces, Surdo engages directly with contemporary cultural tensions, using symbolism and allegory to probe issues of identity, power, and societal fracture.
Equally compelling are Surdo’s mythologically inflected works on paper and canvas, including Ganymede’s Seduction, The Harpies, and The Riddle. Drawing from classical sources, these works reframe archetypal narratives through a contemporary psychological lens, collapsing distinctions between myth and lived experience. Here, Surdo’s ongoing dialogue between past and present becomes especially vivid, revealing the enduring relevance of ancient forms in articulating modern consciousness.
Throughout the exhibition, Surdo’s technical mastery remains unwavering, but the emotional tenor of the work pushes into increasingly personal and unguarded territory. The paintings reveal an artist deeply engaged with memory, identity, and the complexities of the human condition, unafraid to confront both beauty and disquiet with equal intensity.
A second, more intimate presentation, Bruno Surdo: Unfiltered, will take place at the artist’s studio in Evanston on Saturday, May 2 from 12–4 PM. This special event will offer rare insight into Surdo’s process, with a focused exploration of his work centered on the human body and the raw immediacy of direct observation.
Bruno Surdo was born in Chicago and has exhibited widely across the United States, with work held in numerous private and public collections. He is also a dedicated teacher and lecturer, recognized for his commitment to sustaining and advancing the tradition of figurative art.
Later this year, Gallery VICTOR will present a special exhibition marking the 25th anniversary of 9/11, centered around Surdo’s monumental painting Tragedy, Memory, and Honor. First exhibited at Chicago’s Daley Center, the work stands as one of the artist’s most powerful and unflinching achievements, a deeply moving meditation on collective loss, remembrance, and national identity. Its return to public view offers a rare opportunity to encounter a work that confronts history with both gravity and humanity.

Superior St; Chicago IL 60654) to a special evening featuring a sneak preview of a work-in-progress excerpt from the upcoming film, Art Shay: An America So Real. The evening will include an exhibition and silent auction of rare, signed photographs by Art Shay, as well as film contributors Pete Souza, Richard Shay and Sandro Miller to help finance the last stages of the film. There will be a short introduction by Mary Wisniewski, author of Algren. A conversation with the filmmakers will follow. Scheduled for release in early 2027, the feature-length documentary introduces audiences to the extraordinary life and work of one of the most important, yet under-recognized, photographers of the 20th century. We invite you to be a part of bringing this Chicago legend and powerful American story to the big screen. Filmmakers are available for interviews and appearances upon request. Shay's photographs are also available.

Gallery VICTOR is thrilled to include artist Josephine Lally in Creature Feature. Josephine is a recent graduate of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her aerial sculpture, titled Rough Play, a suspended flock of birds, brings dramatic motion to the gallery as the birds appear caught mid-flight, hovering between weight and movement, fragility and force. This cinematic work is not to be missed!

With connections to the upcoming film The Odyssey, Rush will discuss how Homer's tale of adventure, temptation, and return continues to shape his visual language.
