Located in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, gallery 1871 is a contemporary fine art gallery representing over 70 artists both emerging and established. 


Gallery 1871 offers a diverse collection of artwork, knowledgeable staff and welcoming environment for both first-time buyers and seasoned collectors. The gallery has cultivated relationships with a wide range of artists who work in varied media and scale, enabling its staff to help clients find that perfect piece through a vast inventory, special commissions, rotating gallery exhibitions and first-class sourcing. Gallery 1871 mounts six themed exhibitions each year and is open to the public five days a week.

Opening receptions are generally held on the first night of an exhibition from 5–7pm.

Our spring show, Lift: Lisa Ridgers and Cat Tesla, opens tomorrow in the gallery and features three distinct bodies of work: new collaborative works created by both artists taking turns on a single canvas along with two additional series in which each artist worked on her own piece in response to one created by the other.

While there won't be an opening reception due to the pandemic, we are open to the public with no advance reservations necessary. Please note our hours and safety guidelines below.  

The gallery has reopened and we are following strict safety guidelines which include required face masks and maintaining a safe social distance of at least six feet.

We are very excited to introduce the uniquely compelling dimensional work of Chicago bred, Tucson based artist Carrie Seid in a solo show that opens with an artist reception in the gallery on Thursday, September 14th from 5-7pm. In my work I attempt to convey the anatomy of a feeling through form, structure, and the glow of reflected color.

The human experience of being simultaneously tenacious and vulnerable is referred to through material combinations as well as the creation of illusory space. Tension is built, both physically and metaphorically, as elements opposed in character meet to form the surfaces and contours of the work. By combining translucent and reflective materials, I am able to solidify and objectify ephemeral qualities of light, making tangible what cannot be otherwise described. 

My approach to structure reflects the progression and transformation seen in natural growth systems such as the chambered nautilus which leaves an ordered record of its development, organic yet regular in design. The work captures the evanescent, while at the same time offering glimpses of that which is emerging to take its place.
