The two creative powerhouses are coming together for the first time to present Here Hear Chicago, a new site-specific project series that incorporates art, design and performance. The epic collaboration will be featured at the Pier on September 13 and 16 as part of the free public programming for the Chicago Architecture Biennialand EXPO CHICAGO, the International Exposition of Modern & Contemporary Art. The joint project is an extension of Navy Pier’s ongoing commitment to offer guests free, one-of-a-kind arts and cultural programming, designed to inspire, educate and connect communities across the city and globe.
\r\n\r\nAs part of Here Hear Chicago, the locally-based duo, Cave and Gang, will present a series of live productions in which Cave’s performers will interact with and respond to a set of dynamic, custom-fabricated “Stage Buoys,” designed by Gang and her practice, Studio Gang. The program kicks off with Cave’s newest performance work, Up Right Chicago, on Wednesday, September 13 at 9 p.m. in the Aon Grand Ballroom, coinciding with the preview opening night of EXPO CHICAGO (September 13 – 17, 2017) in Festival Hall. On Saturday, September 16, Cave will present his internationally-acclaimed HEARD Chicago at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. in Polk Bros Park, as well as a Soundsuit invasion at 2 p.m. at the Wave Wall on the South Dock. Guests are encouraged to make their way to the Lake Stage on the Polk Bros Park Performance Lawns to catch a special 5 p.m. viewing of Here Hear Chicago on Screen, a collection of short films and documentary clips highlighting Cave’s iconic works. In the event of rain or inclement weather, HEARD Chicago will move to Sunday, September 17 in the Aon Grand Ballroom.
\r\n\r\nAll Here Hear Chicago events and performances are free and open to the public, with limited seating available in the Aon Grand Ballroom. Those interested in attending the Ballroom performance(s) should check the Navy Pier website for registration information.
\r\n\r\n“I so look forward to sharing Up Right and HEARD with my hometown Chicago,” said Cave. “We have been blessed to bring these community-based, collaborative works to other cities and have watched their effect ripple out in the neighborhoods for months and years after. Given this city, this particular moment and the artists coming forward to join forces, I am certain that the ideas of empowerment and collective dreaming will be absorbed and shared wide and far.”
\r\n\r\nCave’s expressive art pairs imaginatively with Studio Gang’s innovative designs to create a playground of interaction for guests to experience and enjoy. Building upon the participatory nature of Cave’s work, Studio Gang’s “Stage Buoys” will define a flexible space for performance, responding to the spontaneous interactions of performers and the public.
\r\n\r\n“Our design features mobile objects, or ‘Stage Buoys,’ that will collectively define a space for performance,” said Gang. “Reflecting the kinetic experience of Nick’s performances, the mobile objects find equilibrium amid the movement of the performers and bustle of the audience at Navy Pier.”
\r\n\r\nThe “Stage Buoys” are self-balancing, upright objects with a mirrored finish that react to, and reflect the movements of the performers, and can be re-arranged for each performance. More than 200 “Stage Buoys” will demarcate the stage, defining a space that is neutral enough to host different performances but specific enough to give an identity to the broader series. The design references buoys or sea marks that float on the surface of water, communicating information through color, light, material, and shape. Like a traditional buoy, the “Stage Buoys” are designed with a very low center of mass so they will return to an upright position after interactions with the performers or being moved by other forces such as the wind, adding to the dynamism of Cave’s performances.
\r\n\r\nStudio Gang’s “Stage Buoys” will remain on display throughout the Pier once the performance series wraps, serving as temporary art installations and offering guests the unique opportunity to view and engage with the pieces up close through the course of the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial.
\r\n\r\n“While the ‘Stage Buoys’ are designed specifically for the Here Hear Chicago performances, our hope is that they will pique the curiosity of guests and other artists who may find new ways to play and interact with them, giving them a life beyond this event,” added Gang.
\r\n\r\nHere Hear Chicago also showcases one of the most prolific and innovative jazz musicians and composers of his generation, Kahil El’Zabar. As part of the series, El’Zabar and his Art Music Ensemble (AME) will produce and perform the music for Up Right Chicago and HEARD Chicago, with new original pieces composed by maestro El’Zabar and arranged by the great Robert “Baabe” Irving III. AME also features a stellar cast of internationally acclaimed master musicians, including, Alex Harding; Charles Heath; Ian Maksin; Tammy McCann; artist, producer and bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma; andCorey Wilkes. Each score will consist of four to five movements. HEARD Chicago will also feature the Chicago Children’s Choir as part of the score and performance. For each number, El’Zabar and company will aim to perform fresh, adventurous music that inspires their audience to feel a sense of uplifting transcendence.
\r\n\r\n“My hope is to take the audience on a sonic journey through the mind and art of world-renowned visual artist Nick Cave and superstar architect Jeanne Gang,” said El’Zabar. “I am thrilled to be a part of this extraordinary project that integrates all of our works, with our art and creative process becoming the tools that uplift us all!”
\r\n\r\nThe Cave-Gang collaboration is part of a series of special projects initiated by the Chicago Architecture Biennial, which provides a platform for groundbreaking architectural projects and spatial experiments that demonstrate how creativity and innovation can radically transform our lived experience. The 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial will be open to the public and on view from September 16, 2017 through January 7, 2018. The kickoff of the 2017 Biennial will align with the sixth annual EXPO CHICAGO, which hosts leading art galleries presented alongside one of the highest quality platforms for global contemporary art and culture each September.
\r\n\r\nHere Hear Chicago is supported by a lead grant from the Chicago Free For All Fund at the Chicago Community Trust. The Chicago Free For All Fund was established for the purpose of supporting and promoting free cultural activities and events in the city of Chicago, with a primary focus on the performing arts and interactive visual arts. Additional funding for the program comes from The Joyce Foundation, which works to support artists and arts organizations in Chicago and the Great Lakes region. The project is also supported by the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, which makes project-based grants to individuals and organizations, and produces public programs to foster the development and exchange of diverse and challenging ideas about architecture and its role in the arts, culture and society.

EXPO CHICAGO, the International Exposition of Contemporary & Modern Art, has established the city of Chicago as a preeminent art fair destination. Initiating the beginning of the international fall art season each September, EXPO CHICAGO takes place at historic Navy Pier, whose vast vaulted architecture hosts leading international exhibitors presented alongside one of the highest quality platforms for global contemporary art and culture. Dedicated to rigorous and challenging programming, EXPO CHICAGO initiates strategic international partnerships, built alongside strong institutional relationships with major local museums and organizations to open parallel exhibitions and events. The 2017 edition of EXPO CHICAGO (September 13–17) will align with the Chicago Architecture Biennial (September 16–January 07), and launch an official partnership with the Palais de Tokyo and Institut français to present an off-site exhibition opening to the public on Tuesday, September 12. Entitled Singing Stones (September 13–October 29), curated by the Palais de Tokyo's Katell Jaffrès, the exhibition brings together 11 emerging artists from the French and Chicago art scenes at The Roundhouse—a 17,000 sq. ft. space built in 1881 and designed by Burnham & Root—at the DuSable Museum of African American History in Washington Park.

Marathon will take place at EXPO Chicago in the Aon Grand Ballroom at Navy Pier
\r\n\r\nPresented by the Chicago Humanities Festival in collaboration with EXPO CHICAGO and Terra Foundation for American Art, Creative Chicago: An Interview Marathon is a multi-dimensional look at creativity in the city. The first US marathon conducted by London-based Serpentine Galleries curator Hans Ulrich Obrist features conversations with a range of artists and creatives.

EXPO CHICAGO and CPS Lives present a discussion featuring artists Cecil McDonald Jr. and Melissa Ann Pinney, two residents within the CPS Lives program whose work explores intersections of representation as part of their ongoing projects. CPS Lives, a non-profit founded in 2018, pairs a Chicago-based artists with a Chicago Public School during an academic school year to produce a collaborative project between resident and students. The two artists will discuss their residencies and their results—images that explore identity and youth—that blur the lines between the artistic and the academic.

Location: Polk Bros Park, Navy Pier
Presented by the Ilya and Emilia Kabakov Foundation, The Ship of Tolerance includes a large-scale installation and program as part of the IN/SITU Outside program, located in Polk Bros. Park at Navy Pier’s entrance. The Ship of Tolerance has been installed in twelve cites internationally to date, connecting communities through art and music to address issues surrounding intolerance. The Chicago Ship is an extension of an international program initiated in 2005 to overcome societal divisions through a three-part approach, including educational initiatives held throughout Chicago schools, the building of a scale model ship, and the presentation of children’s musical performances.
The alignment will also feature the exhibition of the Kabakov’s artwork in EXPO CHICAGO’s 2019 Special Exhibitions program and their participation in the /Dialogues program presented in partnership with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The Chicago Ship will be fabricated locally and consist of a sail made with 139 children’s drawings and a hull built by a professional shipwright from Manchester, UK, supported by local carpenters and shipbuilders. The public is invited to view the building process, which will begin two weeks before the opening ceremony.

The Peninsula Chicago and Kasmin present a special exhibition of artists James Nares, Iván Navarro, and Naama Tsabar entitled REVERB. The exhibition explores how these artists engage with movement, sound, and electricity, as well as how rhythm is structured within the urban environment. The installation is displayed throughout the hotel’s public spaces, and is part of the latest project from The Peninsula’s ongoing commitment to present rotating art exhibitions of world-class contemporary art.

Nick Cave joins Quintin Williams of Heartland Alliance for Human Needs & Human Rights and Gabrielle Lyon of Illinois Humanities for a conversation exploring concepts addressed in the limited-edition print designed by Nick Cave and Bob Faust, a Facility Art/Work collaboration. The conversation is co-hosted with EXPO CHICAGO Marketplace Partner Artsy, and proceeds of the sale of the limited-edition print will benefit Art for Justice, Nick Cave and Bob Faust’s Facility Foundation, and directly support EXPO CHICAGO’s Curatorial Initiatives 2020 fall programming, presented in partnership with Independent Curators International (ICI). EXPO CHICAGO presents Alternate Assembly: Environmental Impact in the Era of Pandemic, a digital proxy for rigorous in-person discourse over three days (January 21–23, 2021) in the form of an engaging hybrid online event. This amalgamation, hosted on the exposition’s newly launched microsite (program.expochicago.com) will feature a series of scheduled programs with leading curators, artists, and scholars to address how ideas in contemporary art can contribute to rethinking our environment within the era of pandemic. Institutional Partners include ART 2030, Desert X, Daata, Danish Arts in Chicago, Independent Curators International, Joyce Foundation, MOCA Los Angeles, and Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC), in addition to a thematic exhibition at the Malmö Art Museum presented by exposition's Curatorial Exchange with Denmark.
Combining the exposition’s core programs—/Dialogues, the Curatorial Forum (presented in partnership with ICI), and THE SEEN—Alternate Assembly will engage EXPO CHICAGO’s local and global audience through an innovative digital platform, from live streaming panel discussions and film screenings (presented in partnership with Daata), to institutionally focused discussions, and art criticism.

Join the DePaul Art Museum and EXPO CHICAGO for a live-streamed discussion with Claudia Peña Salinas (Artist), Gala Porras-Kim (Artist), Patty Gerstenblith (Professor of Law and Director at Center for Art, Museum & Cultural Heritage Law | DePaul University) and Morag Kersel (Archaeologist and Director of the Museum Studies Minor | DePaul University).
This panel “On Repatriation” is in conjunction with Claudia Peña Salinas’ Quetzalli, a site-specific installation at DePaul Art Museum that centers on the Aztec headdress, Penacho de Moctezuma, an object that has become a symbol of national identity for both Mexico and Austria. Quetzalli highlights the issues around the provenance of ancient artifacts and the role museums play in formulating cultural identities. Peña Salinas is joined by artist Gala Porras-Kim, who is featured in DPAM’s current LatinXAmerican exhibition and has treated “symbolic repatriations” through deep research in various museums. Prof. Patty Gerstenblith is a Professor of Law at DePaul University and Director of its Center for Art, Museum & Cultural Heritage Law, and Prof. Morag Kersel is an Archaeologist and DePaul’s director of the Museum Studies Minor. Both Gerstenblith and Kersel have lectured widely on the protection of antiquities and cultural heritage. This program is generously supported by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

EXPO CHGO ONLINE (April 8–12, 2021) is a curated digital exposition of contemporary and modern art presented in collaboration with Hook and complemented by five days of virtual programming. EXPO CHGO ONLINE features presentations of available artwork from over 80 international galleries, Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA) members, EXPOSURE galleries, and Special Exhibition participants.

Unable to host audiences en masse for performances in the actual building, The Arts Club of Chicago opted, during a pandemic-induced hibernation, to explore the generative potential of emptiness. The club invited three artists in three disciplines to ponder the question, “What does one do with an empty institution?” Musician Angel Bat Dawid, Dancer Jasmine Mendoza, and Theater maker Kurt Chiang(with their collaborators Isaiah Collier, Keaton Fox, and Livia Chesley respectively) took on the task of making art for and from a void. The three lead artists, with programmer Jenna Lyle, discuss their discoveries from the process and the inherent contradictions in the original prompt: is an arts institution ever really empty? Catch a first glimpse at the film by Brendan Fernandes that took place within Millennium Park’s Lurie Garden. The movement-based piece, featuring dancers outfitted with custom costumes by Rad Hourani, engages with ballet history and Chicago’s prairie landscape to envision passages of time demarcated by the Japanese calendar. The final performance is scheduled for Saturday, October 23, 2021.

Join EXPO CHICAGO and the Eisenhower Foundation for a live-streamed discussion with multi-disciplinary artist Mel Chin (S.O.U.R.C.E. Studio), Cheryl Johnson (People for Community Recovery), and Devon VanHouten-Maldonado (SkyART) on how art and process-based learning intersect with community activism in Chicago, moderated by Leila McDowell (Eisenhower Foundation).
The one-hour program will take a look at Mel Chin’s ongoing Fundred Dollar Bill Project, a creative campaign that raises awareness about the invisible threats posed by lead contamination in soil, water, and housing while also exploring Johnson’s over three decades of environmental justice work in Chicago and the many visual art programs VanHouten-Maldonado oversees with youth on the South and West sides.
This panel is funded by the Eisenhower Foundation who seeks to explore how the arts can better amplify, visualize, and reinforce the policy priorities recommended by the Kerner Commission to end racial and economic inequality.

Join EXPO CHICAGO at the Chicago Athletic Association for a conversation with EXPO CHICAGO 2023 guest curators Claudia Segura (Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona) and Aimé Iglesias Lukin (Americas Society in New York) for a preview of the themes and intentions for their curated programs at the upcoming exposition, running April 13—16. Lukin and Segura will be joined in conversation regarding overlapping themes of identity and place in their curatorial practices by Carla Acevedo-Yates (Marylin and Larry Fields Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago), whose recently opened exhibition Forecast Form: Art in the Caribbean Diaspora, 1990s-Today (November 19, 2022 – April 23, 2023) envisions a new approach to contemporary art in the Caribbean diaspora. Showcasing large scale sculpture, video, film and site-specific works throughout Navy Pier's Festival Hall, the 2023 IN/SITU program will be curated by Segura, while the 2023 EXPOSURE section, which highlights solo and two-artist presentations from galleries 10 years and younger, will be curated by Lukin.

EXPO CHICAGO and Gertie celebrate the inaugural Chicago Exhibition Weekend (CXW) this September 29–October 1.
The weekend will bring together over 50 galleries, institutions, and artist-run spaces to present exhibitions that encourage everyone from seasoned collectors to those new to engaging with Chicago’s visual arts scene to explore unique programs, extended hours, and more. The weekend emphasizes Chicago’s multitude of non-conventional exhibition spaces as well as the geographic range spanning neighborhoods from Streeterville to West Town, Englewood, and Irving Park to encourage participants to explore the full breadth of the city’s creativity. CXW will also welcome the city’s next generation of talented business, civic, and philanthropic leaders to engage with gallerists, artists, and curators through community dinners, programming, and a closing celebration that aims to cultivate the relationships needed for the city’s arts scene to continue to thrive.
Over 50 galleries, institutions, and artist-run spaces are aligning to present a weekend of exhibition openings, activations, and events this fall, showcasing art throughout Chicago’s many neighborhoods for the inaugural Chicago Exhibition Weekend. The landmark weekend (September 29 to October 1, 2023) is co-presented by EXPO CHICAGO, the International Exposition of Contemporary and Modern Art, and Chicago-based cultural agency Gertie.

Saturday, September 30 - Citywide exhibition openings, a full map of participating galleries, institutions, and artist-run spaces are available here. Building off the success of last year's edition with over 45 participating galleries, the second edition will highlight Chicago's vibrant commercial gallery scene and feature exhibitions, programs and special events throughout the city engaging a range of new and existing collectors. Chicago Exhibition Weekend (CXW) is a four-day initiative that spotlights Chicago’s vibrant cultural landscape. Presented in partnership with EXPO CHICAGO from October 3-6, CXW will mobilize art galleries and creative spaces across the city, featuring 50 participants including Blanc Gallery, DOCUMENT, GRAY, Mariane Ibrahim, moniquemeloche, PATRON, and Rhona Hoffman, and many more.
This year’s edition of CXW encompasses programming including a partner kick-off dinner, a public Night Market Art Bazaar on Saturday night, a Mana Studio Crawl hosted by Stoodio, and more. In addition, CXW has partnered with local arts leaders Scott Vincent Campbell (curator, ICI), Nick Cave (artist), Bob Faust (artist), Laura Lester (art advisor), S.Y. Lim (arts organizer), and Carla Acevedo-Yates (curator, MCA Chicago) to develop customized routes throughout the city for attendees looking to explore Chicago’s galleries, arts spaces, and local businesses.

Join EXPO CHICAGO for a Toast to the South Side at the First Presbyterian Church of Chicago from 6:00-7:00 PM prior to a special performance by artists Margaret Crowley and Eli Greene in the church's indoor basketball court.
Use our South Side Night shuttle between locations, provided by UChicago Arts. The shuttle will operate hourly from 5:00–9:00pm, starting from Hyde Park Art Center and ending at Blanc Gallery, using the following route.

Rebuild Foundation at 305 E. Garfield

Theaster Gates and Rebuild Foundation are pleased to announce the opening of A Listening Space, the latest activation of the former currency exchange at 305 E. Garfield. This experimental endeavor is another example of Rebuild’s investment in creating iterative projects that demonstrate the value, dynamism and cultural possibility in Black space on Chicago’s South Side. A Listening Space invites the public to engage with the Dinh Nguyen Collection, an archive of music which holds over 14,000 records, CDs, cassettes and other audio ephemera, including examples of blues, jazz, reggae, dub and disco, along with African pop and Vietnamese funk, classical, world folk and other experimental and obscure sounds.
Smart Museum of Art

Visit Expanding the 50th: Shared Stories, an updated presentation of the institution’s anniversary exhibition to explore the histories that have made up the Smart Museum over the last five decades. Drawn entirely from the permanent collection—which has grown from nearly 2,500 works in 1974, when the Smart opened its doors, to over 17,000 objects today—the exhibition is organized loosely chronologically to illuminate how the institution, its mission, and collection, have continued to change.

Artist-Led Exhibition Tour by Yasmin Spiro and Farah Salem 5:30–6:30pm
Join Yasmin Spiro for an artist-led exhibition tour of her solo exhibition Cornerstone. This immersive installation draws deeply from the geographic and architectural forms of her homeland, Jamaica, weaving together elements of cultural hybridity that resonate throughout Spiro’s practice. The exhibition features newly-cast sculptures of varying scales, soundscapes, scent work, and large natural fiber weavings that create a multi-sensory experience.
The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center

Enjoy extended hours at the museum and the opportunity to visit The Art of Our Storytellers: Selections from the Johnson Publishing Company collection, which celebrated African American life not just through its publications but also through its stunning art collection. Many pieces reflected African-centered viewpoints and the African American experience, creating a vibrant cultural tapestry that filled the building’s halls and offices.
South Side Community Art Center
Extended Hours for Beyond Frames 5:00–8:00pm
As the country’s oldest Black arts institution, the South Side Community Art Center is proud to present Beyond Frames, an exhibition honoring the visionary role Black women collectors have played in preserving and shaping Black cultural history. The exhibition features works from over fifteen local collections, including pieces by Dr. Margaret T. Burroughs, Eldzier Cortor, Annie Lee, and more.
This showing is anchored by SSCAC’s historical archives and community partnerships and coincides with our 85th anniversary and ongoing $15M expansion campaign.
Neubauer Collegium for Culture & Society
Extended Hours for Let's Get It On: The Wearable Art of Betye Saar 5:00–9:00pm
This exhibition offers the first sustained look at a pivotal moment in Betye Saar’s career, when a visit to Chicago’s Field Museum in 1974 transformed the way she conceived of herself as an artist. A display of over 60 objects—including a ceremonial robe from Cameroon, costumes and jewelry designed by Saar, drawings, photos, and more—casts new light on the way Saar’s early career in costume design informed her pioneering work in assemblage and installation. The show is presented as part of a series of exhibitions and events linked to the multi-year Panafrica research project at the Neubauer Collegium.

Midnight: Performance in Two Parts 7:30–9:00pm
On the occasion of the exhibition, Midnight, two performances will take place during South Side Night at the First Presbyterian Church of Chicago's indoor basketball court. The program will begin with Milking it, a group performance about basketball and physical therapy by Margaret Crowley and end with On Falling, Part V, the fifth iteration of an ongoing performance about time, loss and memory by Eli Greene.

Arts + Public Life presents the undercommons, the first solo exhibition by painter Brandon Carlton. Through his distinctive approach to stylized figuration, Carlton explores the complexities of contemporary Black life, using portraiture and spatial composition to evoke intimacy, distance, and presence.

Corbett vs. Dempsey*

Corbett vs. Dempsey will have extended hours at their two solo exhibitions by Arch Connelly and Mike Cloud. The Future Reflected, Wallworks 1981–1991 is the first solo exhibition of Arch Connelly's (1950–1993) work in Chicago, the city of his birth, and the first commercial gallery presentation to showcase his artwork since his untimely passing. Circle Chat is an exhibition of new paintings by Mike Cloud. The Chicago-based artist's complex and vibrant paintings often utilize conventional support materials organized in unconventional ways.

EXPO CHICAGO returns to historic Navy Pier on April 9–12, 2026 for its 13th edition.
The Galleries section features leading international galleries, alongside an expanded partnership with the forthcoming Obama Presidential Center. Embodiment, curated by Dr. Louise Bernard, Director of the Obama Presidential Center Museum, will be inspired by the architecture and commissioned artists of the Obama Presidential Center ahead of its anticipated opening in 2026.
Focus highlights emerging galleries and artistic practices, featuring galleries 12 years old or younger. Katie A. Pfohl, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Detroit Institute of Arts and past participant of the Curatorial Forum, will curate Focus in 2026. Titled Gathering of Waters, Focus will explore landscape, migration, and adaptive practices of craft and care, connecting artists and galleries from the Mississippi River Basin with work from across the African, Latin American and Caribbean diasporas.
Profile presents solo booths and focused projects by established international galleries, curated by Essence Harden. The section builds on EXPO’s institutional relationships and acquisition pathways, highlighting rigorous making and a scholarly impulse that invites sustained engagement over time.
EXPO CHICAGO also continues its collaboration with the Galleries Association of Korea (GAoK), presenting 12 leading Korean galleries within the fair. This initiative builds on the successful synergy established between Kiaf SEOUL and Frieze Seoul.
