Anderson’s first show with the gallery, No Such Thing brings together a series of works that consider the idea of perfection through the lens of portraiture and material process.

Shot over the course of three years, this series of work represents Anderson’s desire to shift away from the clean, intentional, and manicured visual language that had come to define his photography. Each image grew from a conversation with the subject about the role of perfection in their creative practice, which expanded into questions of self-image, lived experience, and personal understanding of what constitutes perfection, how it shapes our relationship to the act of existing. Excerpts from the conversations accompany the photographs in a zine, bringing the multiplicity of Anderson’s subjects’ perspectives into relation with his images.

The material qualities of each photograph are central to the exhibition. Rather than meticulously controlling every element of the photographic and development process, Anderson has allowed the unpredictability and imperfections inherent to working with film fold in to the rich beauty of his imagery. Erratic scratch marks, dust, and squiggles dance across the surface of certain photographs while in others ghostly, shimmering rays of white light envelop the subjects. Faint, spectral shapes irregularly dot the images, imbuing them with a textural depth that complicates any expectation that a photograph should feel impeccably neat and fully resolved. Rather than treating these effects as flaws, Anderson embraces each unexpected mark or blemish and incorporates it into the finished image, reflecting his interest in the space between intention and accident.

Image: NOLIS ANDERSON, SA, 2026, Archival pigment print, 34 x 26 in, 86.36 x 66.04 cm

","type":null,"state":"published","slug":"nolis-anderson-no-such-thing","created_at":"2026-09-17 01:38:24.195","updated_at":"2026-09-17 01:38:24.195","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":2499,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":"2026-09-17 17:00:00","opening_ends_at":"2026-09-17 20:00:00","searchable":"'2026':293B '26':299B '34':297B '66.04':303B '86.36':301B 'accid':288B 'accompani':143B 'across':213B 'act':136B 'allow':187B 'anderson':2A,30B,31B,73B,153B,185B,265B,291B 'archiv':294B 'artist':28B 'away':78B 'base':27B 'beauti':202B 'blemish':271B 'bring':41B,149B 'central':169B 'certain':217B 'chicago':26B 'chicago-bas':25B 'clean':81B 'cm':304B 'come':89B 'complic':245B 'consid':48B 'constitut':127B 'control':176B 'convers':99B,142B 'cours':64B 'creativ':110B 'danc':212B 'defin':91B 'depth':243B 'desir':75B 'develop':183B 'dot':235B 'dust':209B 'effect':262B 'eight':19B 'element':178B 'elis':6B 'embrac':266B 'envelop':228B 'errat':206B 'everi':177B 'excerpt':139B 'exhibit':17B,172B 'exist':138B 'expand':113B 'expect':247B 'experi':121B 'faint':231B 'feel':252B 'film':196B 'finish':277B 'first':33B 'flaw':264B 'fold':197B 'format':22B 'fulli':256B 'galleri':8B,37B 'ghost':222B 'grew':96B 'idea':50B 'imag':95B,119B,161B,237B,278B,289B 'imageri':205B 'imbu':238B 'impecc':253B 'imperfect':191B 'incorpor':273B 'inher':192B 'intent':82B,286B 'interest':281B 'irregular':234B 'languag':86B 'len':55B 'light':227B 'live':120B 'manicur':84B 'mark':208B,269B 'materi':59B,163B 'medium':21B 'medium-format':20B 'meticul':175B 'multipl':151B 'neat':254B 'noli':1A,29B,290B 'other':221B 'perfect':52B,107B,128B 'person':123B 'perspect':156B 'photograph':23B,145B,167B,181B,218B,250B 'photographi':93B 'pigment':295B 'pleas':10B 'portraitur':57B 'practic':111B 'present':12B 'print':296B 'process':60B,184B 'qualiti':164B 'question':115B 'rather':173B,258B 'ray':224B 'reflect':279B 'relat':158B 'relationship':133B 'repres':72B 'resolv':257B 'rich':201B 'role':105B 'sa':292B 'scratch':207B 'seigenthal':7B 'self':118B 'self-imag':117B 'seri':44B,69B 'shape':131B,233B 'shift':77B 'shimmer':223B 'shot':61B 'show':34B 'space':284B 'spectral':232B 'squiggl':211B 'subject':102B,155B,230B 'surfac':215B 'textur':242B 'thing':5A,15B,40B 'three':66B 'togeth':42B 'treat':260B 'understand':124B 'unexpect':268B 'unpredict':189B 'visual':85B 'white':226B 'work':46B,71B,194B 'x':298B,302B 'year':67B 'zine':148B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1789518964/pyn9lydan6q37au7rnws.jpg","calendar":null,"carousel":false,"category_name":"Exhibitions"}],"pastEvents":[{"id":26190,"title":"Housewarming","starts_at":"2026-01-09 00:00:00","ends_at":"2026-03-21 00:00:00","body":"
Amira Diaw

Ava Peterson

Rebekka Federle

Olivia Porter

A house is never only a structure. It is a sequence of movements, arrangements, and experiences: arrivals and departures, objects placed then replaced, rooms slowly infused with life through use. Housewarming, Elise Seigenthaler Gallery’s inaugural exhibition, brings together a group of artists whose works consider the domesticity as a site of memory, projection, and emotional investigation.

Throughout the history of art, interiors have offered a framework for thinking through personal environments and the quiet pressures of everyday life. Neither purely private nor entirely fixed, the home emerges as a place shaped by negotiation: between self and other, permanence and impermanence, outside and inside, care and neglect. The works in Housewarming engage with these tensions, approaching domestic space not as a static backdrop but as an active and evolving habitat.

Across painting, beaded work, and sculpture, familiar elements of the home are loosened from their functional and traditional roles. Ornate decor dissolves into shimmering strokes of abstraction, rooms register absence as much as occupation, and wooden objects become affective substitutes for pets. The components and meaning of an interior are revealed as something constructed, vulnerable, and deeply entangled with personal and cultural histories.

As the gallery’s first exhibition, Housewarming reflects a moment of arrival. The exhibition extends its attention inward and treats the gallery itself as a space in the process of becoming. The works gathered in this show trace their own paths through memory, material, and imagination, offering the gallery as a provisional interior, newly occupied and still taking shape.

Amira Diaw (b. 2002 in Houston, TX) is an interdisciplinary artist based in Chicago, IL. Peterson (B. 2002, Columbus, OH) is an interdisciplinary artist based in Chicago, IL, who investigates the consequences of opulence and excess. Through the lens of painting, Peterson re-examines imagery sourced from contemporary interior design magazines and historic upper-class interiors, allowing these idealized tableaux to stain, bleed, and drift apart until ornament deteriorates into abstraction.

Peterson received a BFA in Studio Art from Denison University (‘24) and is an MFA candidate in Painting & Drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (‘26). Across painting, ceramics, and works on paper, Before We Knew Better gathers works that feel at once intimate and mythical, suspended at the intersection of memory, imagination, and observation.

Before knowledge becomes fixed and ingrained, the world is encountered through instinct and emotion, narrative and storytelling. The works in Before We Knew Better echo this sensibility, evoking a time when the boundary between the real and the imagined was more diaphanous and permeable. Throughout the exhibition, flora, fauna, and landscapes are depicted across varied materials. Simplified forms, vibrant color palettes, and illustrative gestures imbue the works with a tone that feels both immediate and out-of-time. A close-cropped painting of a unicorn’s milky eye, ringed with fur, reflects a shooting star passing through the luminous sky. Insects and birds adorn intricately patterned vessels. Winding golden roads meander through softly-rendered mountains.

Rather than depicting nature as a fixed or distant subject, the artists approach it as a living presence shaped by memory, experience, and intuition. Their works suggest environments where traces of human life appear alongside vast or mysterious forces: secret gardens, shifting terrains, and intimate moments of quiet grandeur that seem to exist just beyond the veil of ordinary perception.

As the gallery’s second exhibition, Before We Knew Better continues Elise Seigenthaler Gallery’s interest in work that feels imaginative, and open-ended.
