The Christopher Art Gallery at Prairie State College features eight exhibitions a year, six of which are works by major artists primarily from the Midwest; two student exhibitions take place in spring and fall.

This exhibition brings together three longtime comrades—Ricardo Santos Hernández, Salvador Jiménez-Flores, and Gabriel Villa—each with a distinct and expansive approach to artmaking. Their works tap into both the universal and the deeply personal, drawing from years of creative practice rooted in the city of Chicago. Individually and collectively, these artists embody a relentless commitment to art and critical thought. ChingARTE features a dynamic range of 2D, and 3D works that challenge, provoke, and celebrate the transformative power of creativity. The concept of ChingARTE comes with teeth—these works are born from rebellion, social critique, and cultural figurative abstraction. They exist in the tension between beauty and defiance, offering a bold and unapologetic visual language.
These artists employ a wide variety of artistic strategies and materials. Some utilize unconventional materials such as spray paint and PVC surfaces as canvases, while others incorporate traditional media in innovative and exciting ways, including encaustic and oil painting techniques. What unifies their work is a bold and dynamic use of color. True to modern sensibilities, color itself becomes the primary subject expressed through striking forms, expressive brushwork, and energetic processes.
A public reception is scheduled for Thursday, June 4, from 11:00 AM–1:00 PM. Please join us as we celebrate the work of these outstanding artists.
The exhibition opens tomorrow, Tuesday, May 26, and continues through July 2, 2026.
