Nestled in the heart of West Town and established in 2011, Chicago Truborn is a sanctuary for both emerging and established artists, specializing in street/graffiti/pop art. Unconventional and welcoming, this gallery has become synonymous with showcasing affordable art and creating an atmosphere where art collectors and novices alike can explore and indulge.
Dubbed “Chicago’s Best Gallery”, Chicago Truborn further distinguishes itself through two site-specific murals accompanying every new exhibition. As the gallery director and public art specialist, Sara Dulkin’s influence extends far beyond the gallery’s walls. Sara has spearheaded multiple large-scale mural projects across Chicagoland such as the Wabash Arts Corridor, the West Town Public Arts Initiative, and Tri-Taylor’s iconic “Chicago’s Most Instagrammable Alley.”

About the Artists:
Fatherless is a collaborative print posse. Their works are the result of 5 individual artists, from the USA and UK, working cohesively with each other’s artwork. Described as a visual mix-tape of shenagination, they combine their cultural influences in ways that finished works are not only unique to our collaboration, but unique among the editions of hand-screened prints as well; we make certain no two prints are ever the same. Influences are many and certainly captured by what they've coined as a “Rust Belt Power Pop” aesthetic. The finished pieces aim to mirror the chaotic and detached sense that is communicated in our current consumer driven social climate. A good portion of Fatherless imagery is re-contextualized from our current throw away culture to create a finished piece.

A Trio Show Featuring Ruben Aguirre, Daniel Burnett & David Fratu
What do these three artists have in common? Beyond the fact that they all originally hail from Chicago, these artists are passionate about combining techniques rooted in graffiti with fine & abstract art components.
All three artists will be showing brand new original works, on canvas and wood, with some mixed media surprises. Two brand new murals will be revealed the night of the opening reception and the show will be on display though 4/6/19

\"Ulterior\" relates to the hidden/unapparent ideas behind abstract artwork while the word \"Motifs\" references the elements of design, pattern, decoration, shape, and ornamental detailing in these new featured works. Both artists will have a vast offering of originals ranging in size and price - including framed illustrations, canvas work, and limited edition prints.
Two brand new in store installations will be revealed at the opening reception from 4/13/19 6- 10 pm

About the Artists:
Louise Jones (formerly Chen), AKA Ouizi, was born and raised in Los Angeles to Shanghainese parents. She studied drawing and printmaking at UC Santa Cruz, and continued a steady studio practice after graduating. She was heavily involved in Los Angeles bicycle culture after college, which inspired her to make public art and experiment with different creative outlets. She moved to Detroit in 2013 and was soon commissioned to do her first outdoor public mural. She has made over 50 public works since 2013, and continues to make work in and outside the studio including many international endeavors.
Her aesthetic is inspired by folk, indigenous, and spiritual art, as well as patterns found in nature, and patterns from textiles and wallpaper. What she chooses as her main subject is often what other artists would use in the margins as she places a lot of value on the edges. Mark making and craftsmanship are critical to appreciating her work, both are important to her as she makes a lot of effort in producing harmony between line work, composition, and color. She is always working towards masterful execution in all aspects of her practice, and considers herself more of an artisan than an artist.
Emmy Star Brown is a painter, illustrator, and muralist living in Chicago. Her artwork is reflective of her graphic design background, as well as her love for modern design, typography, plants, repurposing, geometry, and her city. While Emmy made a name for herself focusing on lettering and design/pattern based work, she recently expanded her work to large scale murals and canvas. Her style has evolved into a more abstract painterly aesthetic which she will be debuting at this show!

“Aerosol Kingdom” a Solo Show by Mr.Prvrt
Internationally recognized muralist and animal enthusiast, Justin Suarez, returns to Chicago for his second solo show with Chicago Truborn. “Aerosol Kingdom” is aptly named as it features 100 repurposed aerosol cans featuring extremely detailed hand cut stencil animal portraits. From birds of prey, to sea creatures, to the majestic beings of the African Sahara - animals of all shapes and sizes will be represented here. And, while the cans will be the main focus of the show, new hand painted canvas works available as well. The combination of stencil work and free handed brush painting has taken the level of detail in Justin's work far beyond what you’ve seen from him in the past. This show will range in size and price as to accommodate collectors of all levels.
This show is especially exciting and meaningful for Chicago Truborn as Prvrt was the first ever solo show at the gallery back in 2013. Both the artist and gallery have soared to new heights in the years between and this rejoining will surely be one for the books!
Two new site specific murals will be revealed the night of the opening reception and the artist will be present as well. A large-scale public mural may also be involved....STAY TUNED.

About the Artist:
Born on a family farm in upstate New York, Justin Suarez is an artist who brings together the rural and the urban. Celebrating wildlife, he paints flora and fauna flawlessly over concrete and brick. The animals he paints come to life as the viewer is drawn into the world of the painting.
With over 18 years experience, he has painted murals across the US, and his work has been exhibited around the world. Justin Suarez brings the intensity of a raptor to his artistic endeavors, as well as his work as valued handler of birds of prey at Wild Wings Animal Sanctuary outside Rochester, NY, he is able to capture the majesty of the natural world through his explosive graphics and remarkable technique.
In the fall of 2015, Suarez co-founded Roc Paint Division, the City of Rochester’s Youth Mural Arts Program.” Roc Paint is just that and yet so much more. Under the leadership of local artists, Justin Suarez, Lisa Barker and Sarah Rutherford, Roc Paint Division’s mission was to beautify the city’s R-Centers through mural arts while providing employment and training opportunities to young developing artists. What developed through the initial 13-week pilot program in 2016 was nothing short of phenomenal. A team of seven youth created murals at 6 of the City’s R-Centers. The project not only provided the seven youth with work experience, it resulted in breath-taking artistic depictions of youth, energy and hope that glow like beacons from the corners of the community that they shine from.

Lie (Jay Turner | b. 1982 | USA) is a Chicago Suburb based painter. After graduating from The Illinois Institute of Art – Schaumburg, he was a package designer/illustrator for 4 years until he opened Paper Crown Gallery (an urban/street art inspired gallery) in Arlington Heights, IL (2011-2016). Most of his work includes spray paint, acrylic, pencil, and some non-traditional techniques/mediums.
This will be his third large show with Chicago Truborn.

Chicago Truborn brought you \"The Catfish Ponds\" which featured Birdcap and a dozen of his closest friends in Jan 18- fresh off the success of that show, we knew that 2019 would be the year of his solo show! From the Swamplands of Mississippi, Michael Roy AKA Birdcap returns to Chicago for his solo show debut at Chicago Truborn.
\"ECHO\" - words by the artist :
Echo was a nymph doomed by the gods to repetition. As an artist in a genre where repetition is almost necessary for brand awareness, and even further, as yet another artist going to the well of Ancient Greece for content, I thought it an appropriate title. We’re the cute sparkly eyed kids of Echo. We are of course constantly echoing out our own history as a society. In daily life we constantly play out the same dramas and comedies . Luckily it never dulls for us. It’s why we can watch eight iterations of the Batman in theaters. It’s why a Bart Simpson painting is always a hot commodity. It’s why tomorrow is the start of something. It’s why we’ll go and fall in love again. These are some paintings of some really old stories that I found myself in.
ABOUT THE ARTIST :
In 2009 Roy earned his BFA in studio arts from the Memphis College of Art, Memphis TN. His incredibly impressive resume boasts dozens of international gallery exhibitions and murals in countries like S Korea, Thailand, and Israel.
His work and style is inspired by an international hodgepodge of mythological themes in combination with a dedicated nostalgia for the Saturday morning cartoons of his childhood. Taking visual and narrative cues from the places he travels, Roy’s work builds on the cultural accumulation of a transient life. Roy enjoys long walks in congested cities.
This entirely new body of work spans from canvas originals to custom wood cut outs and wood block prints. A brand new limited edition run of silk screen prints will also be released at the show.
Two brand new in store mural installations will be revealed on opening night. Complimentary adult beverages available to those 21+. All of our opening receptions are free and open to the public!
Our first show of 2020 and we're starting things off on a HIGH note.
Jan 1 2020 is especially notable for us Chicagoans as the legalization/decriminalization/recreational use of CANNABIS goes into effect per Bill HB 1438. Illinois is the 11th state to legalize marijuana.
Finally, there will there be (promised) justice for the non violent offenders whose records will be expunged. Finally, the general public can count on safe and reliable access to this medicinal and natural plant. Finally, smokers can be open and honest about their personal/medical usage of something that's been wrongfully vilified and propagandized for decades. FINALLY, we have come one step closer to freedom.

If you've been to Chicago Truborn anytime in the last 6 years, chances are you've seen Karl's work. From dark surrealism to portraits, animals, and still life - his work is largely characterized by a highly recognizable quality unique to his artistry.
Many of you know our reputation with and history when it comes to Karl's paintings : long story short, we can't hold on to them! More often than not, Karl will drop off a new painting and, before it's even listed, it finds a home within hours, sometimes minutes. No exaggeration - it's a running joke at this point!
So, it was quite an easy decision to provide this platform for Karl to debut his first solo show in the city of Chicago. And yes, there will be chickens!! Expect a wide range of price points to accommodate collectors at all levels - from mini's to larger works, framed and unframed. As always, two new window installations will debut the night of the opening.

About the artist:
Born in 1975, Karl Jahnke is a full time, self taught, artist living in the suburbs of Chicago where he paints, sculpts, and raises ungrateful chickens. Most of whom are the subjects of his paintings. Karl paints primarily with oils and is interested in melding still life and portraiture with victorian macabre.

This show focuses on original works created in tandem with vintage/thrifted paintings and mixed media items. Each artist was tasked with finding their own vintage \"canvas\" and asked to add their signature work on top to create a timeless collaboration. It is our distinct honor to bring back this highly influential artist to Chicago for a second time, nearly a decade after his Chicago debut.
Ras Terms, a.k.a. James Monk, was born and raised in Miami, Florida to a Puerto Rican and Columbian family. Highly regarded as a \"letter master\" he is also viewed as a spiritual artist often painting his \"street angel\" characters alongside ancient & otherworldly symbols.
After putting in years of work and becoming a household name in Miami he eventually made his way to California where he became a part of the legendary PTV crew in Oakland.
“If you ask me about my work, I may say something about African-Indian-alchemy-voodoo, or I may just point out something hilarious.”
He embodies his craft entirely while living his life, believing that “the creative force is non-judgmental and is the only thing constant and true in life.”
Today, his contemporary art is recognized on a global scale. He continues to travel and create on a constant basis, collaborating with a broad range of artists and painting the walls of cities around the globe.

Sean Patrick Hannaway
Sean Hannaway is a Chicago born-and-based painter known for his punchy, densely layered style that blends high Renaissance portrait subjects andgraffiti aesthetics. The push and pull between his techniques, colors, and influences creates a dynamic tension in his work. A cheeky sense of humor pervades his practice, and is manifest in his use of plastic framed rococo-style mirrors from the 1960s as his canvases. He will be debuting over a dozen brand new pieces created exclusively for this show.
Marco Prieto
Making his American gallery DEBUT, Marco Prieto is a fine art graduate from Madrid’s Complutense University. Prieto uses painting to explore the issue of artists’ hegemonic identities, replacing the personal gesture of a brushstroke with the primitive, violent, crosscutting human gesture of a blow reminiscent of beating a drum. He seeks the powerful presence that underlies individualistic maelstroms, one which appeals essentially to the human condition. Prieto’s unconventional approach gives way to stunning layers of bold texture and dramatic colors that contrast with the seemingly dark subject matter in his work.

Lie Solo Show/Chicago Truborn 10 year Anniversary show
Lie (Jay Turner | b. 1982) is a Chicagoland born and based painter. He is a graduate of The Illinois Institute of Art – Schaumburg. Submersing himself in the Street Art Scene, he became a master of spray paint and a student of mural art in addition to his studio practice. Mixing traditional painting techniques with aerosol, he culled a unique style that crosses contemporary and street art.

Introducing Skela aka \"Sanguine Skills\"
Born in France, growing up with suitcase in hand, Skela is an artist whose work is influenced by the designs of humanity and nature - all of which she's taken in as a citizen of the world. Throughout the years she developed a unique style; Skelarizing, which represents the geometric shells that envelope nature. A digitization of the organic.
Skela has been a force in the public art scene, actively painting murals, since 2017. Having taught herself how to wield spray paint, she then earned her spot on walls all over the world from Mexico to Colombia and Berlin to Miami, New Orleans, Kansas City and beyond. While she's not on the road painting murals, she's in her studio in Denver CO, where she very recently relocated from New Orleans, working on paintings, jewelry, and a novel.
Skela's world is comprised of the myths that circle humanity like a planet chases a star in the solar system. Her universe speaks of cosmic warriors and creatures big and small who use their elegance and ease to slip wisdom and humor into your everyday life. Vogueing their way into your heart on the rhythms of a dark retro wave. Whether serious or jolly, it is always vibrant!
Hot off the heels of her solo show at the French Consulate in New Orleans - this is Skela's first time showing in Chicago where she will be debuting 18 new pieces, two site specific murals + more.

La Big Bad Loba is a visual journey through overcoming loss and addiction, unlearning bad habits, letting go of people. Having survived clearly dark times, this dynamic Chicago artist says she was \"inspired to paint and sculpt the things that remind me to keep going and to keep being that strong bad ass wolf that I am.\"
She sculpts, paints, and is a full time tattoo artist. ZEYE writes graffiti and has numerous street art pieces throughout the city. Proficient with aerosol, air brush, & traditional brush there is nothing she can't do : her work deserves your time and attention. Please join us!!

Born in Saint-Dié, France, near Strasbourg, Isabelle Gougenheim grew up surrounded by rich history and culture. She earned a master’s degree in Art and Ethnology from Les Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg and spent six months living with the Berber tribes in Morocco, an experience that deeply influenced her artistic perspective.
Twenty-seven years ago, Isabelle moved to Chicago to pursue a career in art and high-end furnishings, working for Holly Hunt and later becoming a partner at Kevin Reilly collection. In 2018, she fully embraced her passion for art, using scarves as her canvas and creating complex, colorful designs. These pieces can be found in the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
Her work, described as an organize chaos, complex, and avant-garde, reflects her knowledge, life experiences, and views on contemporary society. Each piece is an interactive experience and you'll find yourself falling in love time and time again with each viewing. The work is sophisticated and colorful - this is the type of work that will truly elevate your space and take your collection to the next level.

His work often brings a sense of playfulness and levity while offering a subtle commentary on (bizarre nature of) the world around us.
Over 75 original works are set to debut alongside two site specific installations. Patrick will also be live painting throughout the weekend.

Vincent Peters, also known as Æthelstan, is a contemporary artist based in Miami. His latest exhibition, \"The Halo is the New Crown,\" challenges the intersections of power, heritage, and societal decay. The exhibition repurposes symbols of inherited wealth and status to expose their fading relevance in modern times. Æthelstan employs a blend of historical references and subversive imagery to question the commodification of legacy. His work resonates in a market where anti-establishment narratives are increasingly valuable. By merging motifs previously explored by Jean-Michel Basquiat with his own unique stylings, he crafts visually compelling, yet politically charged, pieces that provide a discourse about race, religion, and politics, forcing audiences to reconsider the cost of inherited privilege. The exhibition aligns with the broader discourse on the death of classical art paradigms, arguing that fine art’s commercialization has stripped it of deeper meaning. Æthelstan navigates this tension by creating works that are both collectible and critical of the systems that make them valuable. The artist will be in attendance answering questions, and his original short film will be screened in a loop all evening to accompany the work. This is a multi-sensory experience, free to attend and open to the public.

His murals and other works have been commissioned by prominent clients such as Hulu, Shedd Aquarium , The Chicago Symphony, Jimmy Chamberlin (Smashing Pumpkins), My Morning Jacket and so many more.
Jason's art has also been exhibited in numerous prestigious venues around the world from Seoul to Beijing and Turin to LA, Miami, and everywhere in between. But never... At Chicago Truborn!
Making his CT debut, Jason will unviel two site specific installations alongside dozens of originals ranging in both price and size for collectors of all levels.

You ALREADY KNOW Won Kim. His influence can be felt across Chicago’s art, music, and culinary communities.
...And if you think you don't know the name Won Kim, you definitely know the name @revisecmw. He's a Chicago born N raised artist whose work moves between street art, graffiti, and contemporary fine art.
\"He took on the moniker, REVISE, because he’d see that so often, in red ink, at the top of his homework assignments in high school. Revise became one of the best abstract graffiti writers in the Midwest due to his use of vibrant colors and fluid and organic, nature like lettering, making his name with the highly respected artist collective and graffiti crew, CMW.\" (@kevincoval)
Beyond the studio, Won is also a prominent chef at the acclaimed @kimskichicago. His culinary prowess directly influences his artwork. Thinking on your feet while also being intentional with your practice blends structure with spontaneity and process with intuition.
Won's solo show marks his first in ten years, following his previous solo show right here at Chicago Truborn, and represents a return that underscores both the evolution of his practice and his long-standing relationship with the gallery.

Jeff Pak is a Chicago based multidisciplinary artist who dreams of becoming a professional wrestler. When he isn’t busy experimenting with kimchi in tacos, he navigates the world of images like a yard sale; constantly trying to decipher what to keep, sell, and throw out. His early love of anime and comics heavily influence his art. Currently he is fixating on the séance of sexy and funny and whether there is a difference between the two to begin with.
Together...as BFF's they form what can only be described as \"Two Cheeks of the Same Ass\".
All jokes aside, these are two of Chicago's most prominent street artists whose work stands out for its technical skill and polish. While the subject matter is playful and lighthearted, both artists bring serious dedication to their craft. Look at those clean lines!!! They've created nearly 40 original pieces that blend humor with impressive artistry : work that's sure to brighten your day.
Opening Saturday, June 6, \"A Modest Pile\" marks @thehway return to Chicago Truborn with a focused presentation of new work that blends Renaissance painting, street culture, found objects, and a dry sense of humor into something entirely his own.
Born and based in Chicago, Hannaway is known for transforming ornate rococo mirrors from the 1960s into richly layered paintings.
At first glance, the work carries the weight of classical portraiture and religious iconography. Spend a little more time with it, however, and the jokes begin to reveal themselves.
Headlines, advertisements, fragments of contemporary culture, and subtle visual gags are embedded throughout the paintings, creating a tension between reverence and irreverence that feels uniquely Hannaway.
\"A Modest Pile\" is also an exciting new format for Chicago Truborn. For the first time in the gallery's history, this exhibition will run for only two weeks!! ✨

Chicago Truborn opened its doors in West Town with a pretty simple idea: make art accessible, to support artists, and create a space that felt less like a traditional gallery and a more like a place to call home.
I've watched artists and galleries come and go. I've seen our neighborhood change, the buildings, the businesses, and entire casts of people come through the Chicago art scene. I've seen artists who were just getting started become household names. Taken chances on people I believed in. Put paintings in living rooms and bedrooms and kitchens... murals on walls, weird objects on bookshelves, and art in the hands of people who maybe never thought they were “art collectors.”
Chicago Truborn is Still here. Still independently owned, putting artists first. Still trying to make art feel approachable. Still got that door propped open. Playing my tunes.
It's only right to celebrate my business Bat Mitzvah by showing an artist who has been Instrumental in my experience, both professionally and personally. An artist whose name and work can not be seperated from the history of Chicago: That artist is my friend Anthony Lewellen.
Anthony has been an important part of the Chicago Truborn story for years, as an artist, as a friend, and as someone whose work has continued to evolve alongside the city around him. His paintings occupy that strange and wonderful space between familiar and surreal : Recognizable pieces of Chicago, memory, culture and everyday life filtered through his own visual language.
ANTCK will take over the gallery with a new body of work created specifically for this exhibition. Two site specific murals will be painted and a new, limited edition, print drop will be released!
And while this show itself honors Anthony, the anniversary represents all the artists who have trusted me with their work. The collectors who bought their first piece here. The people who wandered in because they saw a mural outside. The friends who helped support me and wound up becoming die hard collectors. My fellow business owners who come to check on me throughout the day.
The people who have been coming through our doors since 2011, those who just discovered us last week! Anyone who has ever walked in and thought, “Oh shit. I LOVE this.”
13 years is a long time to do anything independently. It’s long enough to see entire chapters of your life come and go. I know how incredibly lucky I am to have built something that's lasted this long. I also know it's less about luck, or me... And more about YOU and what you've allowed this to become. SO, let's celebrate!

This event celebrates the vibrant community of businesses in West Town while showcasing the work of Chicago artists. The Art Walk will feature local artists’ work on display at West Town Art Galleries, retailers, and restaurants all weekend long. Free public art walking tours highlighting mural efforts will be available at 5pm on Friday starting in front of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church and 1pm on Saturday & Sunday starting at the south side of Eckhart Park in front of the park house. Free pedicab rides will be available on Saturday and Sunday from 10am-6pm to help attendees get around town and enjoy all the art, culture, music, food, and deals in West Town. Attendees can use their Art Walk button for deals and specials at local businesses. The event will also feature a reception for Anthony Lewellen's \"Various Work\" on Friday, October 2 from 5-8 pm, with the exhibition remaining on view Saturday and Sunday from 12-6 pm. Special guest Jodi Rae Designs will be showing and selling her one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces on Saturday and Sunday from 12-6 pm.
