In this sense, there is no life without action. All these little parts and drops of goodness ignite the living in our world illuminated by the energy of the sun.

We are not mere observers taking measurements and making plans. We are a structured and complex stimulus being, emerged within the patterns and cycles of Nature. These connections and patterns along with their cycles are expressed as a whole through the living. It’s a time for celebration, romance, and new possibilities. This time has served historically as inspiration for European conceptions of fantasy, epitomized through the Scandinavian festival of Midsummer and the Shakespeare play A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In both examples, the forest sets a stage for magic and mischief.

Our tale takes a distinct Americana approach. Midsummer Dreams brings together three Chicago artists working in the Midwestern Surreal- a discourse that refers to integrating belief-oriented meaning mechanisms into secular systems. This is displayed through a midwestern sensibility, grounding whimsical imagery in familiar landscapes, rituals, and materials. In a forest of our own making, themes of bounty, desire, shelter, body, and landscape are explored and challenged in sculptural form. Fantasy becomes a powerful tool to reimagine and reflect our reality.

Exhibiting Artists: Maeve McGale, Jeremy P Wong, and Micki LeMieux

Visit www.chicagosculpture.org for more information.
","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"mid-summer-dreams","created_at":"2024-03-18 19:32:41.558765","updated_at":"2024-05-15 16:15:39.742096","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":974,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":"2024-07-20 18:00:00","opening_ends_at":"2024-07-20 21:00:00","searchable":"'-5':31B '-6':23B '-8':27B '-9':10B '1':30B '11':17B '12':26B '1912':39B '2':22B '20':7B,15B '2024':18B '6':9B 'americana':104B 'approach':105B 'artist':112B,182B 'august':16B 'ave':42B 'becom':171B 'belief':125B 'belief-ori':124B 'bodi':160B 'bounti':157B 'bring':108B 'celebr':54B 'challeng':166B 'chicago':111B 'concept':68B 'csi':33B 'damen':41B 'date':13B 'desir':158B 'discours':119B 'display':134B 'distinct':103B 'dream':2A,44B,48B,86B,107B 'epitom':71B 'european':67B 'exampl':89B 'exhibit':12B,181B 'explor':164B 'familiar':143B 'fantasi':70B,170B 'festiv':75B 'forest':91B,150B 'form':169B 'friday':21B 'galleri':19B 'ground':139B 'histor':63B 'hour':20B 'imageri':141B 'inform':195B 'inspir':65B 'integr':123B 'jeremi':185B 'juli':6B,14B 'landscap':144B,162B 'lemieux':190B 'locat':37B 'maev':183B 'magic':96B 'make':154B 'materi':147B 'mcgale':184B 'mean':127B 'mechan':128B 'micki':189B 'midsumm':1A,43B,45B,77B,83B,106B 'midwestern':116B,137B 'mischief':98B 'n':40B 'new':57B 'night':84B 'open':3B 'orient':126B 'p':186B 'play':81B 'pm':11B,24B,28B,32B 'possibl':58B 'power':173B 'project':34B 'realiti':180B 'recept':4B 'refer':121B 'reflect':178B 'reimagin':176B 'ritual':145B 'romanc':55B 'saturday':5B,25B 'scandinavian':74B 'sculptur':168B 'secular':130B 'sensibl':138B 'serv':62B 'set':92B 'shakespear':80B 'shelter':159B 'space':35B 'stage':94B 'sunday':29B 'surreal':117B 'system':131B 'take':101B 'tale':100B 'theme':155B 'three':110B 'time':52B,60B 'togeth':109B 'tool':174B 'visit':191B 'whimsic':140B 'wong':187B 'work':113B 'www.chicagosculpture.org':192B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668760/zzdc6jlglr2kvedlqihd.jpg","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669750/event_ics_1721669749803.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":14150,"title":"By Degrees III","starts_at":"2024-09-14 12:00:00","ends_at":"2024-10-04 12:00:00","body":"

Join us for fun, conversation, and Art

Often, an artist’s most groundbreaking work comes from being immersed in a culture of study and intellectual pursuit. CSI Member Benefit Art Auction,” an exhibition of small works at our member gallery space in Bucktown. On opening night, we will offer food, fun and fabulous art. There will be a live auction of 5 sculptures and a silent auction of over 30 sculptures. Buyers get to take art home that night!

Little, but BOLD! is in celebration of all things un-monumental. Often flying under the radar, small things have the special ability to bridge private and public spaces. Within the sculpture field, there has been a projected narrative that bigger is better. We are here to assert that small things can hold the same importance as the largest monument. All proceeds will support the CSI exhibition and outreach programs and CSI members. So please bid early, bid often and of course, bid high! Across psychology, literature, art, and philosophy, shadows have long served as metaphors for the complexities of human experience. They invite us to explore what lies beneath the surface, confront the unseen, and embrace the mystery of what we cannot fully grasp.

Carl Jung’s concept of the “shadow self” speaks to the parts of ourselves we often deny or suppress—the fears, flaws, and truths that challenge our ideal self-image. Yet, in engaging with this shadow, we embark on a journey of self-discovery, finding strength in vulnerability and balance in the dualities of our existence.

Shadows shift, stretch, and dissolve, echoing the impermanence of our world. The pop-up show, organized by Director of ENGAGE Projects Jennifer Armetta, curator Nora Schneider, interdisciplinary artist Kasia Kay, and sculptor Lucy Slivinski, is a rumination on feminine forces and cyclical change, imperfection and inner peace. Just as the moon reflects the sun’s light, it also represents a reflection on our own lives, choices, and the state of the world around us; Moonlight asks the questions, How do we find the calm amidst turbulent times? What is my guiding light in the darkness? The gallery will showcase a variety of sculpture and mixed media painting and will be host to a series of exhibition programming made to activate this space of community including cocktail hours, panel discussions, and community gatherings. Please join us on Thursday, April 9th from 5-9pm for the opening celebration!

Interested in introspection and identity, Kasia Kay is a Polish American painter and sculptor who splits her time between the United States and Poland. She earned her B.F.A. from Columbia College Chicago in 2004 and acquired expertise in metal casting at the Chicago Industrial Arts and Design Center in 2017. Many kinds of art may fit into this broad category. \"Not normal\" refers to anything that goes against established norms, represents an unexpected change, or deviates from accepted collective reality. For the purposes of the exhibition, depictions of ‘not normal’ are those that depart from standard norms. For example, Dada and Surrealism depict fantastical, odd, or distorted realities that differ from our collective everyday experience. \"Not normal\" can also refer to atypical or unusual occurrences—a flamboyantly dressed person or someone dressed as a superhero on a commuter train full of people in business attire, or events that interrupt daily life, such as a train derailment or hacked cellphone service. In politics, a government perceived as failing to protect its citizens is not normal. Likewise, a government that threatens to invade an otherwise allied nation is also not normal. What is considered normal in one society may not be recognized as normal in another. Norms include societal rules of established behavior; ways of being and expression; political, racial, social, gender, psychological, and physical norms; as well as conventions of etiquette. Beyond social norms, there are technological and global anomalies, climate anomalies (such as red rain or boiling lakes), biological abnormalities, and other bizarre natural or physical phenomena, including UAP sightings. In physics, a particle can also exist as a wave, further challenging our sense of reality. Physical or cognitive disabilities may also be perceived as atypical, depending on societal expectations - a sensory crossover where a person might ‘feel’ sounds in specific parts of their body or see colors while playing music—is not normal. Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness that can involve hallucinations, such as hearing voices or seeing things that are not present. What is considered normal changes as society changes.

Historical shifts over the past 80 years illustrate this: previous generations considered it normal for eight-year-olds to care for younger siblings for months without adult oversight. Smoking on airplanes was common in the late 20th century, but is now strictly prohibited. Homosexuality, once considered a disorder, and tattoos, jogging, and single parenthood—once deviant—are now common. Yet even today, some of these societal changes face sustained efforts by certain groups to challenge or reverse them—and that, too, is not normal.

Featured Artists: Jonathan Antos • form beyond representation and meaning emerges through instinct rather than depiction. Influenced by the bold innovations of artists such as Willem de Kooning, whose restless surfaces redefined the boundaries of abstraction, the pieces in this exhibition embrace tension, rhythm, and spontaneity. In these artworks, control and chaos coexist, echoing the human condition in all its vulnerability and force. Abstract Expressions is not about what is seen, but what is felt—an immersive encounter with the energy of creation itself, emotion made visible.

Exhibiting Artists: Nikki Anderson, Pinar Aral, Tomas Co, Darlys Ewoldt, Ted Sitting Crow Garner, Shelley Gilchrist, Peter Gray, Carol Hammerman, Kasia Kay, Victoria Kowalczyk, Laurie LeBreton, Patrick Miceli, Scott Mossman, Rebecca Russow, Marvin Shafer, Yvette Kaiser Smith, Pat Stephens, Rich Stewart, Michele Thrane

Curator: Micki LeMieux

The CSI Project Space Gallery is located at 1912 N.
