Featuring affordable fine art prints and works-on-paper by both local and international artists, CPC is Chicago’s longest-running fine art printmaking workshop, where gallery visitors mingle with printmakers as they create on the presses. CPC also offers classes in etching, lithography, relief, screen printing, and book arts. For over 36 years the studio has been a world class, professional destination for both printmakers and print enthusiasts.

CPC has ALWAYS been a SAFE SPACE. For all people, ages, gender, religions, race, and background. We invite you to gather in our shop to celebrate DIVERSITY and COMMUNITY. Historically, printmaking has been a democratic medium; a way to get the word out, a celebration of free speech. CPC, in solidarity with other print shops around the country, is opening its doors in the name of INCLUSION. So many people are feeling frustrated, disappointed and afraid, and they are no longer able to find political catharsis in signing petitions or donating money. I think we are entering a moment where passive participation no longer soothes, and people are ready to come together, if just to voice their fears and unify through the act of making.
\r\n
\r\nCPC artists have created a variety of images that can be screen printed on whatever you bring to print on. Choose whatever you want to print, and we'll show you how to do it! We recommend smoother fabrics and paper surfaces for best results, but hey, we're open to whatever.

\r\nWe'll provide the inks and screens and other stuff, just keep in mind we're not able to switch out ink colors once we've started. We're looking forward to having you join us for this gathering!

Opening Reception: Saturday, April 1, 5-8pm
\r\n\r\nIn Iran, the Persian New Year is called Nowruz; now meaning new, and ruz meaning day. Nowruz is about the renewal of nature, and for 3000 years, it has been celebrated at the exact moment of the vernal equinox. Iranians decorate using the seven symbols of life and vitality called Haftsin. These symbols crop up in many of the exhibited prints: Apple, Sumac, Vinegar, Garlic, Dried Oleaster, Samanu (sweet pudding made from wheat germ), and Sabzeh (wheat sprouts). We will have a Haftsin set up at the opening reception on April 1st.
\r\n\r\nThe exhibit features over 120 mini prints by CPC, Italian and Iranian printmakers. Multiples of these works are currently traveling and being exhibited together at the Chav Printmaking Studio in Tehran, as well as in Mashhad and Kerman in Iran, at IL Fogilo - 74b Gallery in Milan, Italy and at the Sagene Kunstsmie in Oslo, Norway.
\r\n\r\nThis touring exhibition is a collaboration between Chav Printmaking Studio (Iran), Milano Printmakers Associazione Culturale (Milan) and Chicago Printmakers Collaborative.
\r\n\r\nIn light of recent political events in the U.S., the CPC thought it fitting to showcase the work of these wonderful Iranian and Italian printmakers and enlighten Chicagoans to their vibrant culture and customs. Art has no barriers nor borders and broadens our idea of what is possible. The great print works of the past 300 years have easily outlived and transcended whoever happened to be king, dictator, or president.

CPC will again be on this citywide tour of all things architecturally COOL. Hiroshi Ariyama and Dennis O'Malley, Chicago printmakers known for their work featuring Chicago architecture and landmarks, will present demonstrations of both etching and screen printing. FREE and open to all!

with printmakers Bill Fick and Carlos Hernandez
During their visit, Outlaw printmakers Fick and Hernandez will talk about their work
and ways to stay creative using sketchbooks and other ideas. Free sketchbooks for
everyone while they last! The PRINT PARTY component will take place after the talk.
All supplies provided except garments to print on - bring your own. Print a Bill Fick
linocut unto your favorite garment! Bring t-shirts, jackets, thrift store finds, etc to
print on. Free Speedball ink samples will be given away. Only $20 bucks at the door.

Chicago Printmakers Collaborative is pleased to present SOFT, an exhibition of prints and textiles curated by Victoria Marie Barquin and Cassie Tompkins. In addition to exploring the shared appreciation for craft, repetition, imagery, and physicality between textile and print production, SOFT confronts the often gendered interpretation of the word by exhibiting works that are all at once emotive, graphic, skillful, and strong. This exhibition will feature artwork by Meg Roberts Arsenovic, Bukola Koiki, Melissa Leandro, Nicole Del Rio, Sonnenzimmer (Nick Butcher and Nadine Nakanishi), Fraser Taylor, Cassie Tompkins, and Chris Williford.

One day workshop with Cassie Tompkins, Visiting Artist and Co-Curator of SOFT, our summer exhibition of print and textile work
1 day, 10am—3:30pm (with a 1/2 hour lunch break)

In this one-day, five-hour course, participants will learn how to make monoprints on fabric. Techniques covered include dyeing cotton fabric and stencil screenprinting with dye and ink. This experimental course encourages students to embrace play and experimentation. Work with artist and instructor Cassie Tompkins to develop your design, then screenprint with dye and/or inks onto a panel of cotton fabric. Screenprinting experience preferred.

This summer, 30 additional CPC-affiliated artists will launch a portfolio project, which will be exhibited in the gallery. A total of 60 artists (out of thousands) are being featured in this ongoing series of 30th anniversary events.

In September 2019, the Chicago Printmakers Collaborative kicked off a celebration of its 30th year with a series of events called CPC 30/2020. The CPC arty party continues with this exhibition, featuring the work of 30 artists who have played some sort of role in the history of our little printshop. Artists include CPC members, teachers, interns, visiting artists and gallery artists. They are all immensely talented and firmly committed to their studio practice, to printmaking, and to the community of artists who carve wood, draw on stones and plates, pull ink through screens, and drive the presses. They all make work that is gorgeous, well-crafted, and visually compelling.

Welcome to CPC's new Covid-distraction and Visual art series: FLATFILE FRIDAY!
March 27th's featured artist: Kouki Tsuritani
Each week, CPC's very own Flat Phil will take you snooping through the drawers and other hidden places to discover gorgeous work by gallery artists that you can buy (Phil would really like for you to support artists right now, many of whom are struggling to pay the rent). We will feature one or two printmakers each week.
Since Flat Phil has an amazing ability to explore very narrow spaces where prints may be hiding, he just discovered our giant stash of Japanese artist Kouki Tsuritani's work. We started showing Kouki's prints about 4 years ago, and his lush mezzotints and engravings have our gallery visitors and printmakers enamored.

Born in Tokyo in 1967, and trained in painting and printmaking at the Kanazawa College of Art (Japan), Kouki Tsuritani's work combines the philosophy of traditional Japanese art (such as Ukiyoe, which means \"Floating world\") with traditional European printmaking.

CPC started showing Mirka's prints about 4 years ago, and her detailed and affordable wood engravings and linocuts have our gallery visitors and printmakers regularly treating themselves as they deplete our inventory. Mirka's prints also make wonderful gifts. Check out her fun titles...she knows how to party.
Mirka Hokkanen is a printmaker, designer, illustrator and author who grew up in Finland. Her relationship to Finnish nature and her grandmother's house fostered a sense of curiosity and wonder that continues to fuel her creativity.
\"I am fascinated by (1) animals: the relationships we have with them, the shapes they create in their surroundings and the patterns swirling in their fur/feathers. And by (2) little wonders of nature:
a tiny cluster of mushrooms poking through leaves, frosted berries on a twig, or a tangled wind beaten
pine hanging on a cliff. I'll never be able to capture
all of it on paper, but I am doing my best to share
my passion with you.\"

Mirka moved to the U.S. in 1998 to attend Rockford College in Illinois (BFA 2002). She received both Master of Arts (2004) and Master of Fine Arts (2006) degrees in printmaking from University of Dallas, TX. Many military moves into her career, she has had the opportunity to be an active part in many art communities, teaching, speaking, and organizing events. Her works continue to be exhibited both nationally and internationally.
Her first illustrated book, Four Otters Toboggan: An Animal Counting Book, came out in March 2019, and her second book, Harmony Humbolt- Perfect Pets Queen, will be published by Clear Fork Publishing in 2020. When not creating a menagerie in the studio she takes care of the zoo she has at home: three kids, a cat, a dog and a husband.

Each week, CPC's very own Flat Phil will take you snooping through the drawers and other hidden places to discover gorgeous work by gallery artists that you can buy (Phil would really like for you to support artists right now, many of whom are struggling). We will feature one or two printmakers each week. Flat Phil has an uncanny ability to slip inside narrow spaces unnoticed, so he was pretty pleased to find himself in a drawer full of Italian artist Nicola Villa's woodcuts and etchings, especially since Phil shares Nicola's love of fishing and gritty urban scenes. When Nicola taught a course as a CPC visiting artist, we just couldn't get enough of his amazing work and his sexy accent. CPC has been showing his prints ever since.

Born in 1976, in Lecco, Italy, Nicola currently lives and works in Genoa. In 2004 he received a degree in architecture from the Politecnico of Milan, whereupon he decided to devote himself to painting and printmaking.
With imagery derived from his daily walks through the streets or fishing from his boat, the artist is particularly keen on depicting the human condition in his paintings and prints.
The life of Villa's characters belongs to a story without plot, where figures chase one another beyond their physical presence into an imaginative athmosphere of elusive, subtle anxiety that surrounds all of us.

Since 1995, Dan MacAdam has operated under the name Crosshair, a mainstay of Chicago's world-renowned community of printmakers and poster artists. In addition to hundreds of poster and album cover art commissioned for well-known musical artists, Crosshair produces Dan's own screenprinted fine art editions. His work draws upon original photography and a unique approach to the silkscreen process in order to produce Crosshair's distinctively detailed, immersive prints, which dismiss the graphic legacy of the psychedelic era in favor of a dreamlike realism. We're big fans over here at CPC, and we're constantly blown away by Dan's ultra nerdy mastery of his medium. Who else pulls an entire run of a 13th layer just to add a tiny red dot to a print?
\"I am drawn to photography and make technically rigorous, photorealistic screen prints as a means of creating images which draw the viewer into three-dimensional spaces. Through my work, I seek to explore the boundaries and tensions between the human-built and natural worlds, where I find rhythms, textures and atmospheres analogous to those occurring in music. My prints frequently portray structures and landscapes in transitional states, transformed by growth, decay and shifting context to new forms, at a remove from their intended function.\"

Corinna Button received her BA in Fine Art at Leeds and her Post Graduate in Advanced Printmaking in London. Button was elected member of Royal society of Painters and Printmakers and has exhibited in solo and mixed shows Internationally, presenting works in printmaking, painting, and sculpture. Her work is held in the permanent collections of Victoria and Albert Museum, (London) The Jiangsu Art Museum (China), The Ashmolean Museum (Oxford), The University of Aberystwyth (Wales), The BBC and Castle Lesley (Ireland).

People are the subjects of my work, with a focus on women and the blurring and shifting boundaries between the private and public experience. My inspiration is

Every other week, CPC's very own Flat Phil takes you snooping through the drawers and other hidden places to discover gorgeous work by gallery artists that you can buy. Flat Phil (with his trusty sidekick, Art Purchase) has an enviable ability to slip inside narrow spaces unnoticed, and pretty much flipped out when he started exploring the otherworldly work of etching and mezzotint maestro ART WERGER. This feature also just happens to coincide with the launch of CPC's online MEZZOTINT PREP class next week!! And if you cannot imagine HOW this man manages to work a piece of copper to produce these lush images, you are not alone. ENJOY...
My work explores themes of time/space and the nature of representation as shared experience. I create images that thrust the viewer into an active relationship with an otherwise static picture. My subjects are often observed from an oblique aerial angle or from an objective distance, placing the viewer in the position of the omniscient narrator. Within this framework, themes of personal interactions and the relationship of people with their environment are explored. I work primarily in the media of etching and mezzotint enjoying the processes that permanently fix these images into a metal surface. -Art Werger

Art Werger is a Professor and the Chair of the Printmaking program at Ohio University. He taught at Wesleyan College in Macon Georgia for 18 years where he was Division Chair of the Dept of Fine Arts. He received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (1978) and his MFA from the University of Wisconsin (1982). His work in etching and mezzotint has been internationally exhibited for over thirty years. He has received over two hundred awards for his work. He is best known for his aerial images of cities and suburbs and for his narrative mezzotints. In 2015 he received both the International Printmaking Prize at the Guanlan International Printmaking Biennial in Guanlan, China and the Grand Prize at the International Mezzotint Festival in Ekaterinburg, Russia.

Welcome to the 31st iteration of CPC's Annual International Small Print Exhibition and Holiday Sale! In Celebration of Women’s History Month, The CPC is proud to feature artist, Catherine Jacobi and her work, “The House That John Built” as part of our new ‘storefront takeover’ series. Catherine Jacobi has been a designer and sculptor for over 30 years. She is a longtime friend and resident of the CPC. Her work can be found in many private collections.

Saatchi Gallery Magazine’s Elliot Leiva wrote in 2019 of her exhibition, Things of This World, “Catherine Jacobi’s [work] is a breath of fresh air; a well-received Sunday afternoon reading poetry, an evening at the museum visiting familiar pieces you have had a yearning to see.
The objects that dominate Jacobi’s work evoke the long-lasting memories that we have embedded in them. They remind us of the constancy of objects as anecdotal registries. The sculptural qualities of the work, much like Rauschenberg’s, confront the audience as objects in the world. Stylistically, the use of everyday objects parallels Duchamp’s ‘readymades’ — prioritising ideas over the visual example and expressing subjects of times past and the passing of time so inherent in our human existence, whether internally or externally with the world around us.
But Jacobi is not interested in any nostalgic notions of the past. She is interested in inciting viewers to think about their stories critically moving forward and to allow themselves to contemplate in the present.”
Artist Statement
In 1969 my father (John) began building a doll house from mail order plans. For the most part he followed the plans, and the result was my surprise gift from Santa that year. Is it a girl’s dream, to have the awesome responsibility of a house and its upkeep. In 1974 I renovated the house using wall and carpet selections of our house at that time. This house, so like, but more perfect than my own. 50 years after initially receiving the dollhouse, I had the idea that I could reimage/rebuild the house the way I truly saw it — without any sense of disrespect and conversely to celebrate the continuum and history of its construction — to marvel at the longevity of it — the putting together of pieces that so want to be together. The house was deconstructed and rebuilt into 4 structural fragments and a photo compilation of the original house. 5 pieces — a family — breaking apart the familiar, the known and reorganizing it for another look. - Catherine Jacobi

Curatorial statement:
The prefix “dis-“ in the English language has meant “apart” since its early Latin roots. The artists in this exhibition challenge that prefix, instead showing us how “dis-“ can be a force of identity, empowerment, and community. In unique ways each artist has been an advocate for Disability rights in Chicago and the World. Whether it is through film, dance, visual art, poetry, or a myriad of other artistic media, these artists utilize their disability to commemorate the strengths which bind creative artistic output, personal experience, and radical aesthetics in an effort to disrupt exclusionary concepts. – Matt Bodett

The Chicago Printmakers Collaborative is pleased to present an exhibition dedicated to work which revels in irreverence, featuring print-based work which indulges in crass humor, vulgarity, and all things lowbrow. Due to its penchant for mass production, affordability, and wide dissemination, printmaking has, on occasion, been a conduit for artists to engage in a less refined and more pop-oriented way to cater to the masses. Historically, this has given printmakers tremendous freedom to depict subject matters outside the stuffy confines of “high art”, employing humor, lewdness, profanity, and shock-value to entice viewers and illustrate issues unpalatable to polite society.
This exhibition explores the ways contemporary printmakers continue this tradition-- rejecting the “serious” in favor of the bawdy, the flippant, the obscene, and the absurd. Through resolutely refusing to respect that which is generally taken seriously, irreverence holds an untapped potential for critique, reclamation of power, and celebration of self and community.

The Chicago Printmakers Collaborative is excited to present a show which highlights the unique interests and passions of our staff members! Inspired by \"staff picks\" shelves in bookstores, this is an exhibition of prints and printmakers that our teachers and staff think are worthy of special recommendation for your viewing pleasure. Combining the distinct curatorial visions of six different printmakers resulted in a diverse collection of work, spanning a wide range of styles and mediums. While some staff curators dove deep into CPC's collection to find golden oldies that rarely get to see the light of day, others opted to include new work by contemporary Chicago artists. Old and new, earnest and whimsical, this show has a little something for everyone! We hope to see you at the opening, or during our open gallery hours.

Named after a series of pressure prints by the artist, Body Rhythms is a collection of recent works by artist and storyteller Junli Song. Ranging from printmaking to ceramics, the works on display are constantly undulating. Figures move in wave-like motions while translucent colors lay smoothly on top of one another in both ink and glaze.
Inspired by the ancient Chinese cosmography, Shanhaijing, Song reinterprets tradition through a feminist, diasporic lens. With the ongoing construction of an imaginary world, Song explores how liminality can be a space for liberation. Countering the Western use of perspective, Song utilizes flatness as an Eastern artistic convention and negative space as an opening—a threshold to cross over and into. These moments of transformation, of seeing through, of absence embodied, reflect how in-betweenness can be expansive, rather than limiting.
Raised in Oak Park, Illinois, Junli Song is an artist and storyteller with a rather unusual background. In addition to her Master’s in children’s book illustration, Song studied economics at the University of Chicago and international development at the University of Oxford. She is currently pursuing an MFA with a concentration in printmaking at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. To learn more about Junli, visit her website and follow her on Instagram.

What is a steamroller printing???? So glad you asked! It’s essentially traditional woodblock relief printing, but on a massive scale. At the festival, we’ll be inking up carved woodblocks as large as 24 square feet. Once covered in ink, large bolts of fabric will be laid on top of the blocks, and then we’ll run the whole thing over with an industrial steamroller. Think of it like a rubber stamp that you need ten people, a whole driveway, and construction equipment to print!

Yep, after a long pandemic hiatus, everyone's favorite sale returns with all of our groovy gig poster artists, printed ephemera, and collected (hoarded) mountains of incredible images that can affordably grace your walls and ceilings from top to bottom. Sometimes a shop just has to purge to make way for new stuff, and our pile has been growing to the bursting point with beautiful prints that need homes. Chicago Printmakers Collaborative is thrilled to present a retrospective of etchings by prolific Chicago artist Tony Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick's work is inspired by Chicago street culture, cities he has traveled to, children's books, tattoo designs, and folk art. This exhibition includes 30 years of etchings, some of which were printed in collaboration with Fitzpatrick at the Collaborative.
It is an odd juncture to survey 30 years of doing anything. I've actually been making etchings for 5 or 6 years longer than that! I remember how much I loved the reveal with that first one I made, when you finally pull the paper off the plate.
Etching rewarded the way I drew. I was formed by comics, cartoons, Mad Magazine, and early Marvel. Nobody ever told me they were 'Art'. The etchings, very early on, were my auto-biographical device; veiled in the imagery I'd carried with me since childhood.
Art writers ask me if I've ever done a self-portrait– these are all self-portraits. They are where I go to hide in my own story. Enjoy.

Inspired by the immediacy and wide dissemination of graffiti, wheatpasting, street signs, posters, and all forms of printed ephemera, the artists explore the democratic roots of printmaking and draw on conversations between graphic movements in Latin America and Chicago. The title pays homage to the Taller de Gráfica Popular (the People's Graphic Workshop) which was founded in Mexico during the first half of the 20th century and allowed printmakers to collaborate on projects for socio-political causes throughout the organization's lifespan.

We are thrilled that Delia Touché has joined us in the studio this week for their Bloom Residency! Delia Touché was born in Devils Lake, ND. She is a Sisseton Wahpeton Dakota and Assiniboine artist based in the Midwest. She has been exhibited across the United States at venues such as M Contemporary Art (Ferndale, MI), Plains Art Museum (Fargo, ND), The Art Galleries at Austin Community College (Austin, TX), Cranbrook Art Museum (Bloomfield Hills, MI) among others. Delia has her work in the permanent art collection of the University of North Dakota. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing from Minnesota State University Moorhead and a Master of Fine Arts in Print Media from Cranbrook Academy of Art where she received the Gilbert Fellowship. Delia's work acknowledges the estranged and complex relationship she has with her Indigenous culture. She is working her way back home through various modes of making. Delia’s practice is influenced by family photo archives, Dakota cultural framework, Native nuances, gallows humor, Indigenous diaspora, and pop culture.

OHC is a free public festival that offers behind-the-scenes access to architecturally, historically and culturally significant sites throughout Chicago, plus more than 40 events and programs at the sites, including demonstrations, talks and arts performances. The exhibit is constantly changing as prints are sold off the walls and replaced with new work. You can also buy prints online from the cozy warmth of your home. The prints available on our online store are not the same as those being shown in the gallery, but both offer a unique shopping experience and works by the gallery artists you know and love. Both pickup and domestic shipping options are available.

Raise a glass, share a story, see some etchings....
This Saturday, June 20, 6-9pm at the CPC printmaking studio. 4912 N Western Ave.
Please join us in honoring and celebrating our dear friend, mentor, printmaker, cheerleader, and collaborator Tony Fitzpatrick. A larger-than-life-personality and creative force, he was a regular here at the shop while he worked on a prodigious output of etchings with Catherine Winings, Duffy O'Connor, and Jack Spector-Bishop. In the late 1990's, he even produced one of his few lithographs (the ever-popular \"PINKY\") with us in our old studio in East Ukrainian village in collaboration with Tamarind master printer Jeff Sippel.
Much has been written about Tony's muti-hyphenate artist life; as actor, writer, collage maker, mural artist, etc, but we knew him 'round these parts as a PRINTMAKER, making original, gorgeous & inspired marks with an etching needle into asphaltum-covered copper plates, and meticulously working with his printmaker collaborators to proof these creations over months and months to produce the final \"right to print\" proof that would become the basis of his limited editions. He would obsess over the ink colors or aquatint quality in his complex, multi-plate pieces, and tell a new story with each intimate frame. He once told us that his etchings were his most personal art pieces; a \"diary\" of his innermost experiences and memories.
In the printshop, Tony would park himself under the skylight for a day of work and have us on the floor with his signature humor and tall tales and often came with an entourage of young artists he was both employing and nurturing along in their careers (\"You gotta teach this one etching!!\"). He was most generous with CPC members, students, and visitors, often purchasing work on the spot of some young printmaker, which he knew deeply to have a great impact on their confidence. There is evidence of Tony's presence all over the workshop, from his absolutely stunning prints to his ephemera, posters, books and handmade signage (\"Make Prints! Don't be an Asshole!\"). We still have his favorite print-signing pencil in the drawer. Our love extends to Michele, Gaby and Max and the entire Fitzpatrick family. The big guy left an enormous hole in the heart of our studio.
RIP Tony, we still feel your presence, and listen for you in the song birds you so loved.
The Monoprint exhibition will still be up on the walls this weekend (and we're happy you'll be able to check it out!), but the tables will be full with Tony's proofs and prints and plates, which includes the last print he made with Duffy in his black and red series. Many of his editions were sadly unfinished.
These proofs and plates will be handed over to Tony's family. We hope it will be interesting for folks to see Tony's process, and the time and care he took in developing his images.

Tony was fiercely in love with his family. He played the part of protective papa bear with a vengence, as we shared the hilarious sorts of stories that went along with having \"the most interesting children in all of the Chicagoland area\" (to us at least). When we were working on his print PINKY, our kids were all running around while I tried to keep them from eating sawdust or bathing themselves in acid while our musician friends dropped by for a tune or to just hang out. Tony smoked at the time and therefore prided himself that he was the only one to be allowed to do so at CPC (had to keep him away from the sawdust too)...
My children loved Tony, with Daniel seeking him out at \"Birds and Beer\" events and Evan recently getting Tony's blessing for the cardinal tattoo they now proudly sport on their right shoulder. Outside Daniel's childhood bedroom door, there is the \"D\" etching (from Max & Gaby's alphabet) that Tony gifted Daniel many years ago. And yes, our kids are now all badasses in their own right, so we were basically correct in thinking they were all better than average. Tony also reminded us often that \"Michele saved my life\". I have to wholeheartedly agree.
When I first started CPC, we had conversations that went something like this:
T: So, let me get this straight. You have all these presses and shit, and then you just let anyone come in and use your studio?
D: Well yeah, but first they have to show me that they know what they're doing in printmaking.
T: And then you give them a key to your place?
D: Yep
T: Are you fucking crazy? That's the stupidest thing I ever heard of.
So here we are. I sure do miss that guy. Brutally honest. Heart of gold, generous to a fault.
