Residents partner with artists to bring striking, contemporary artwork into their communities. The Terrain Biennial challenges the way art is often confined to institutional spaces and class-specific audiences. Building on Chicago’s rich tradition of apartment galleries and artist-run spaces, the Biennial brings contemporary art into the intimate terrain of the front yard, fostering dialogue between neighbors and providing access to new art for a wide range of people.

Focus
The theme of this years Terrain Biennial is to take stock of the landscape that people are living in today. What is the terrain that we occupy? What is the topology of our moment? Artists and hosts have been asked to reflect upon the ways in which our environment changes us and how we are changing it.

Highlights
Projects for the Terrain Biennial 2019 will take place all over the world! Projects range from Terrain Founder Sabina Ott’s video piece at Wedge Projects in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood; to Alberto Aguilar’s stylized broken window posters in Havana, Cuba; to performances by Teresa Albor, Shubho Saha, and Back ART that examine the complexity of colonial history in Dhaka, Bangladesh; to Betsy Odom’s subversion of sports fan lawn signs in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood; and Cathy Hsiao’s Migration score for Blue House, 回家 which recontextualizes a symbol of Imperial power into an exercise of care in Cicero, IL.

The Terrain Biennial continues to grow this year as we have added a number of satellite clusters in Newburgh, NY; Portland ME; Santa Fe, NM and Lubbock, TX. The original format of the exhibition space existed as monthly installations in her front yard, from which grew the Terrain Biennial. In the summer of 2018 Sabina Ott passed away leaving behind a legacy of radical energy, caring magic, and deep community. Terrain Exhibitions is a 501c3 Not for Profit organization established in the State of Illinois. Terrain Exhibitions produces the Terrain Biennial, a public art event staged at locations worldwide. Terrain Exhibitions hosts the Terrain Residency in Springfield, Illinois working with our partners the Springfield Art Association and the Enos Park Residency Program.

Land Acknowledgment
Chicago is the traditional homelands of the Council of the Three Fires: The Odawa, Ojibwe and Potawatomi Nations. Many other Tribes like the Miami, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Sac and Fox also called this area home. Located at the intersection of several great waterways, the land naturally became a site of travel and healing for many Tribes. American Indians continue to call this area home and now Chicago is home to the sixth largest Urban American Indian community that still practices their heritage, traditions and care for the land and waterways. Today, Chicago continues to be a place that calls many people from diverse backgrounds to live and gather here. Despite the many changes the city has experienced, both our American Indian and the Terrain Exhibitions community see the importance of the land and this place that has always been a city home to many diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Image: Yvette Brackman, Terrain DK

","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"terrain-biennial-2019","created_at":"2019-09-27 In 2019 there are seemingly limitless ways to connect with family, friends, and to participate in our communities, whether we are physically close to them or far away. Education and self-improvement are easy to access and we can set our own course for what we want to learn. While many privileged Americans take this for granted and bemoan our constant state of connection, information is increasingly controlled and restricted in jails, prisons, detention, and throughout the justice system — including while awaiting trial and after release. This Pop Up Library and programs aim to make these punitive and often arbitrary policies and their effects on individuals, their families, and communities visible through collections of work made by currently and formerly incarcerated youth and adults in Chicago; materials from Illinois Deaths in Custody Project; censored and returned communications between family and friends; books banned from prison libraries; information maps; and conversations and workshops with individuals and organizations working to change these policies and end mass incarceration. Information Wants to be Free & So Do We has featured collaborative programs with Illinois Deaths in Custody Project, Moms United Against Violence and Incarceration, Black & Pink, Free Write and more, and is supported by an Envisioning Justice grant from Illinois Humanities. About Read/Write Library Read/Write Library collects, preserves, and provides access to Chicago community media in order to promote and inspire diverse forms of cultural production and civic engagement. We recognize the contributions that all community members make to co-creating a city — prioritizing those that have been left out of or suppressed from the record — and believe that learning to value these stories plays a vital role in building empathy, community pride, and the ability to see oneself as a change agent. Unlike a traditional read-only library, a “read/write” library makes the record rewritable, constantly adding material from Chicagoans of all ages, backgrounds, education levels, neighborhoods and languages. Through our public programs and free browsing hours, growing collection of over 6,000 publications, and open source catalog, we strive to raise the visibility of this work in order to reveal connective threads across neighborhoods, generations, and cultures and to encourage inquiry into and ownership of the historical record. Through our public programs and free browsing hours, growing collection of over 6,000 publications, and open source catalog, we strive to raise the visibility of this work in order to reveal connective threads across neighborhoods, generations, and cultures and to encourage inquiry into and ownership of the historical record.

For more information, visit readwritelibrary.org.

","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"conversational-dinner-with-read-write-library","created_at":"2019-09-27 18:55:42.200006","updated_at":"2019-09-27 18:55:42.209133","excerpt":"","is_timeless":false,"organization_id":168,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'000':385B '2019':55B '6':384B 'abil':336B 'access':90B,270B 'across':406B 'ad':359B 'adult':178B 'age':365B 'agent':343B 'aim':147B 'american':107B 'arbitrari':154B 'ask':34B 'audienc':35B 'await':136B 'away':81B 'background':366B 'ban':197B 'believ':318B 'bemoan':113B 'black':244B 'book':196B 'brows':378B 'build':330B 'catalog':390B 'censor':188B 'chang':213B,342B 'chicago':180B,272B 'chicagoan':362B 'citi':303B 'civic':287B 'close':76B 'co':300B 'co-creat':299B 'collabor':230B 'collect':167B,266B,381B 'communic':22B,191B 'communiti':71B,164B,273B,295B,332B 'connect':62B,118B,404B 'constant':115B,358B 'contribut':292B 'control':23B,45B,122B 'convers':1A,204B 'cours':97B 'creat':301B 'cultur':284B,410B 'current':172B 'custodi':186B,236B 'death':184B,234B 'detent':128B 'dinner':2A 'divers':281B 'easi':88B 'educ':82B,367B 'effect':158B 'emot':42B 'empathi':331B 'encourag':413B 'end':217B 'engag':288B 'envis':255B 'famili':64B,162B,193B 'far':80B 'featur':229B 'form':282B 'former':174B 'free':13B,30B,224B,246B,377B 'friend':65B,195B 'generat':408B 'grant':111B,257B 'grow':380B 'histor':420B 'hour':379B 'human':260B 'idea':39B 'illinoi':183B,233B,259B 'improv':86B 'incarcer':25B,175B,219B,243B 'includ':134B 'increas':121B 'individu':160B,208B 'inform':9B,26B,119B,201B,220B,424B 'inquiri':414B 'inspir':280B 'intellectu':44B 'jail':126B 'justic':53B,132B,256B 'languag':371B 'learn':103B,320B 'left':309B 'level':368B 'librari':5A,20B,144B,200B,263B,265B,350B,353B 'limitless':59B 'made':170B 'make':149B,297B,354B 'mani':105B 'map':202B 'mass':24B,218B 'materi':181B,360B 'media':274B 'member':296B 'mom':238B 'necessari':47B 'neighborhood':369B,407B 'often':153B 'oneself':339B 'open':388B 'order':276B,401B 'organ':210B 'ownership':417B 'particip':68B 'physic':75B 'pink':245B 'play':325B 'polici':155B,215B 'pop':18B,142B 'preserv':267B 'pride':333B 'priorit':304B 'prison':127B,199B 'privileg':106B 'product':285B 'program':146B,231B,375B 'project':187B,237B 'promot':278B 'provid':269B 'public':49B,374B,386B 'punit':151B 'purchas':6B 'question':37B 'rais':394B 'read':348B 'read-on':347B 'read/write':4A,262B,264B,352B 'readwritelibrary.org':426B 'recogn':290B 'record':316B,356B,421B 'rehabilit':51B 'releas':140B 'restrict':124B 'return':190B 'reveal':403B 'rewrit':357B 'role':328B 'safeti':50B 'see':338B 'seem':58B 'self':85B 'self-improv':84B 'set':94B 'social':41B 'sourc':389B 'state':116B 'stori':324B 'strive':392B 'support':252B 'suppress':313B 'system':133B 'take':108B 'thread':405B 'throughout':130B 'ticket':7B 'tradit':346B 'trial':137B 'unit':239B 'unlik':344B 'valu':322B 'violenc':241B 'visibl':165B,396B 'visit':425B 'vital':327B 'want':10B,27B,101B,221B 'way':60B 'whether':72B 'work':169B,211B,399B 'workshop':206B 'write':247B 'youth':176B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668301/ilwzjszpht61ljzawo4x.jpg","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669370/event_ics_1721669370565.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Talks"},{"id":2152,"title":"Time & Place: Conceptual Archival Practices in Contemporary Exhibition Making","starts_at":"2019-10-07 18:00:00","ends_at":"2019-10-07 19:00:00","body":"
Common Ground: at Chicago Cultural Center

Time & Place: Conceptual Archival Practices in Contemporary Exhibition Making
Discussion with Nathaniel Parks, Tigerman McCurry Art and Architecture Archivist, Ryerson and Burnham Libraries, The Art Institute of Chicago; Matthias Neumann Architect, Director, normaldesign; and Amy Kaczmarek, Registrar, Institutional Archival Technician; and moderated by Biennial contributor Bianca Bova, Associate Director, CAPA, and curator.

Please join us for this panel discussion exploring the conceptual aspects of archival work and its intersection with contemporary exhibition making practices. These relationships stand in stark contrast to the extraction of resources from Indigenous lands, which has been a constitutive component of settler colonialism. The first waves of resource extraction—the desire for precious metals, valued animal pelts, agricultural products, and land to cultivate large crops of grain and herd cattle—have given way to the privatization of water, ongoing mining of natural and mineral resources, and in particular the demand for oil. Oil extraction and transportation has compromised Indigenous land, sustenance, and life itself, from the Amazon jungle to Standing Rock, North Dakota. At the same time, this capital is transformed into philanthropy by funding this and other cultural events. Biennials and museums are supported by compromised wealth, yet cultural agents operating within their sponsorship seek to promote the very stories that reveal these relationships and their complicities. Ultimately, most major cultural sponsors have a colonialist dimension. In this landscape, how can cultural agents operate while still maintaining a critical discourse?

This program is organized by Biennial contributor Settler Colonial City Project in partnership with Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture, Columbia University.

Additional speakers to be confirmed.

","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"the-petro-biennial-complex","created_at":"2019-11-09 17:06:58.927492","updated_at":"2019-11-09 17:06:58.946962","excerpt":"","is_timeless":false,"organization_id":168,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'addit':234B 'agent':167B,200B 'agricultur':84B 'amazon':133B 'american':230B 'anim':82B 'architectur':231B 'attent':36B 'biennial':4A,157B,213B 'buell':224B 'capit':15B,145B 'cattl':96B 'center':225B 'citi':217B 'collaps':32B 'coloni':12B,69B,216B 'colonialist':192B 'columbia':232B 'complex':5A 'complic':184B 'compon':66B 'compromis':124B,163B 'concern':28B 'confirm':238B 'constitut':65B 'contrast':52B 'contributor':214B 'critic':206B 'crop':91B 'cultiv':89B 'cultur':24B,155B,166B,188B,199B 'dakota':139B 'demand':116B 'desir':77B 'dimens':193B 'discours':207B 'discuss':8B 'environment':31B 'event':156B 'extract':55B,75B,120B 'first':71B 'fund':151B 'given':98B 'grain':93B 'grow':27B 'herd':95B 'hoyn':223B 'impend':30B 'increas':35B 'indigen':16B,38B,59B,125B 'jungl':134B 'land':42B,60B,87B,126B 'landscap':196B 'larg':90B 'life':129B 'maintain':204B 'major':187B 'metal':80B 'mine':106B 'miner':110B 'multipl':45B 'museum':159B 'natur':108B 'north':138B 'oil':118B,119B 'ongo':105B 'oper':168B,201B 'organ':211B 'particular':114B 'partnership':220B 'pelt':83B 'petro':3A,11B,14B,19B,23B 'petro-bienni':2A 'petro-capit':13B 'petro-coloni':10B 'petro-cultur':22B 'petro-philanthropi':18B 'philanthropi':20B,149B 'precious':79B 'privat':102B 'product':85B 'program':209B 'project':218B 'promot':174B 'prompt':34B 'regist':25B 'relationship':39B,48B,181B 'resist':17B 'resourc':57B,74B,111B 'reveal':179B 'rock':137B 'roundtabl':7B 'seek':172B 'settler':68B,215B 'speaker':235B 'sponsor':189B 'sponsorship':171B 'stand':49B,136B 'stark':51B 'still':203B 'stori':177B 'studi':228B 'support':161B 'susten':127B 'system':46B 'templ':222B 'time':143B 'transform':147B 'transport':122B 'ultim':185B 'univers':233B 'valu':81B 'water':104B 'wave':72B 'way':99B 'wealth':164B 'within':169B 'yet':165B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668310/rc4xajudfofw2hlfzdmd.jpg","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669380/event_ics_1721669379761.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Talks"},{"id":2436,"title":"On Land and Literature","starts_at":"2019-11-15 11:00:00","ends_at":"2019-11-15 13:00:00","body":"
a conversation about Wolff Architects’ Biennial project inspired by the work of South African writer, activist, and gardener Bessie Head.

Register HERE

Biennial contributor Ilze Wolff joins Cajetan Iheka (associate professor, Yale University) for a conversation about Wolff Architects’ Biennial project inspired by the work of South African writer, activist, and gardener Bessie Head. Initiated by Bruguera, the Asociación de Arte Útil is a growing international network of people and activities that promote this idea. The project exists primarily as a growing online archive of hundreds of case studies from around the world that exemplify the concept of “Arte Útil” across categories such as urban development, science, economy, environment, and education. The archive is activated through exhibitions, meetings and exchanges that further interrogate the idea of ‘useful art’. This Chicago iteration of the Arte Útil Archive is presented within the former library of the historic Hull-House, reactivating the room as resource for local neighborhood groups, artists and activists to exchange knowledge that may prove useful in the local context.

“Arte Útil” (9 Sep, 2019–05 Jan, 2020) is commissioned by the 2019 Chicago Architecture Biennial, \"…and other such stories\", curated by Yesomi Umolu, Sepake Angiama and Paulo Tavares.

","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"arte-util-useful-art-case-studies-from-the-chicago-area","created_at":"2019-11-09 17:16:49.440268","updated_at":"2019-11-09 17:16:49.447977","excerpt":"","is_timeless":false,"organization_id":168,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'05':321B '2019':320B,328B '2020':323B '9':318B 'across':245B 'activ':54B,215B,259B 'activist':304B 'addam':156B 'alistair':27B,47B 'analys':56B 'angiama':341B 'architectur':67B,330B 'archiv':76B,228B,257B,280B 'area':10A 'around':235B 'art':1A,4A,22B,42B,74B,100B,130B,152B,178B,180B,192B,205B,243B,272B,278B,316B 'artist':134B,185B,302B 'asociación':20B,40B,150B,203B 'base':120B 'biennial':68B,331B 'bruguera':25B,45B,187B,201B 'case':5A,57B,232B 'categori':246B 'chang':198B 'chicago':9A,60B,66B,274B,329B 'click':165B 'co':124B 'co-director':123B 'commiss':325B 'concept':241B 'contemporari':129B 'context':315B 'curat':110B,336B 'current':176B 'de':21B,41B,142B,151B,204B 'decis':82B 'defin':183B 'develop':86B,250B 'director':17B,37B,125B 'document':128B 'economi':252B 'educ':255B 'eesi':145B 'environ':253B 'européenn':140B 'exchang':264B,306B 'exemplifi':239B 'exhibit':177B,261B 'exist':222B 'expans':96B 'former':285B 'franc':146B 'free':167B 'graduat':133B 'green':109B 'group':53B,301B 'grow':209B,226B 'histor':289B 'hous':159B,292B 'hudson':28B,48B 'hull':158B,291B 'hull-hous':157B,290B 'hundr':230B 'idea':190B,219B,269B 'imag':144B 'initi':199B 'inspir':173B 'intern':97B,210B 'interrog':267B 'involv':79B 'iter':275B 'jan':322B 'jane':155B 'knowledg':307B 'l':138B,143B 'leann':108B 'learn':92B,148B 'librari':286B 'local':299B,314B 'make':83B 'manchest':115B 'may':309B 'meet':262B 'museum':160B 'neighborhood':300B 'network':98B,211B 'onlin':227B 'open':12B,32B 'pari':119B 'particip':62B 'paulo':343B 'peopl':213B 'post':132B 'post-gradu':131B 'present':282B 'primarili':223B 'process':84B 'program':136B,171B 'project':63B,89B,164B,221B 'promot':217B 'prove':310B 'public':13B,33B 'reactiv':293B 'regist':29B 'research':135B 'resourc':297B 'room':295B 'rsvp':169B 'scienc':251B 'sep':319B 'sepak':340B 'social':197B 'stephen':117B 'stori':335B 'studi':6A,58B,233B 'submit':71B,162B 'support':106B 'supérieur':141B 'tania':24B,44B,186B 'tavar':344B 'tool':195B 'umolu':339B 'univers':113B 'urban':249B 'use':3A,271B,311B 'util':75B,101B 'whitworth':112B 'within':283B 'workshop':14B,34B,103B 'world':237B 'wright':118B 'writer':121B 'yesomi':338B 'école':139B 'útil':2A,23B,43B,153B,179B,181B,206B,244B,279B,317B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668310/brvh5nm2ng9cyki0miqm.jpg","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669380/event_ics_1721669379763.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Education"},{"id":2445,"title":"Lampo Series: Caterina Barbieri","starts_at":"2019-11-18 20:00:00","ends_at":"2019-11-18 21:00:00","body":"
Chicago Cultural Center

78 East Washington Street, Chicago, IL

RSVP HERE

Italian-born, Berlin-based composer Caterina Barbieri explores themes related to machine intelligence and object-oriented perception in sound through a focus on minimalism. Through workshops, installations, activations, performances, and programs, The Available City invites a critical global conversation that asks how design can foster collective engagement and agency to identify new forms of shared space in urban areas.

The fourth edition of the Chicago Architecture Biennial presents a new chapter of a decade-long research initiative led by 2021 Artistic Director, designer, and educator David Brown. The Available City introduces a process for bringing ideas generated from community workshops into existence on vacant lots in neighborhoods across the city. Currently, there are more than ten thousand city-owned, vacant sites in Chicago that each measure 25 by 125 feet. His creative practice specializes in engaging communities in collaborative and participatory design processes. The former director of the Taubman College Detroit Community Design Center and founder of the award-winning Studio:DetroitHS – an initiative created to introduce under-represented high school students to careers in design – he is particularly interested in the production of various forms of space and understanding how publicly accessible and responsive design can radically transform the trajectory of lives and environments, particularly for those on the margins of society. His award-winning design work has been featured in such publications as The Washington Post, Miami Herald, Houston Chronicle, The Atlantic, and Fast Company. His critical essays and commentary have been published in the Journal of Architectural Education, International Review of African American Art, Art South Africa, Volume, Minneapolis Star Tribune, and Detroit News, among others. Recipient of the 2008 Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture's Collaborative Practice Award and the 2010 Kresge Fellowship, he is currently creative director of the WILKINS project (tWp), a social justice, strategic design alliance that provides architectural, urban design and planning services, public interest design solutions, and expertise in engaged public discourse.

David Brown is the Artistic Director of the 2021 Chicago Architecture Biennial.
