city in the country for our avian friends. In one night alone, 966 birds struck just one building on Chicago’s lakefront.
In an effort to raise awareness about one of the leading causes of bird deaths, we are making replicas of every She is the author of The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants and Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses. She lives in Syracuse, New York, where she is a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Environmental Biology, and the founder and director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment.

The Serviceberry

As Indigenous scientist and author Robin Wall Kimmerer harvests serviceberries alongside the birds, she considers the ethic of reciprocity that lies at the heart of the gift economy. How, she asks, can we learn from Indigenous wisdom and the plant world to reimagine what we value most?

Our economy is rooted in scarcity, competition, and the hoarding of resources, and we have surrendered our values to a system that actively harms what we love. Meanwhile, the serviceberry’s relationship with the natural world is an embodiment of reciprocity, interconnectedness, and gratitude. The tree distributes its wealth—its abundance of sweet, juicy berries—to meet the needs of its natural community. And this distribution insures its own survival.

As Kimmerer explains, “Serviceberries show us another model, one based upon reciprocity, where wealth comes from the quality of your relationships, not from the illusion of self-sufficiency.”

Braiding Sweetgrass

As a botanist, Robin Wall Kimmerer has been trained to ask questions of nature with the tools of science. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, she embraces the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. In Braiding Sweetgrass, Kimmerer brings these two lenses of knowledge together to take us on “a journey that is every bit as mythic as it is scientific, as sacred as it is historical, as clever as it is wise” (Elizabeth Gilbert).

Drawing on her life as an indigenous scientist, a mother, and a woman, Kimmerer shows how other living beings—asters and goldenrod, strawberries and squash, salamanders, algae, and sweetgrass—offer us gifts and lessons, even if we’ve forgotten how to hear their voices.

In a rich braid of reflections that range from the creation of Turtle Island to the forces that threaten its flourishing today, she circles toward a central argument: that the awakening of a wider ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgment and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living world. For only when we can hear the languages of other beings will we be capable of understanding the generosity of the earth, and learn to give our own gifts in return.

","type":null,"state":"published","slug":"42nd-annual-smith-nature-symposium-awards-dinner","created_at":"2025-03-16 16:33:05.959","updated_at":"2025-03-16 In a world saturated with constant alerts, urgent headlines, and an unrelenting stream of information, our nervous systems are rarely given time to settle. While some messages truly demand our immediate action, many linger as ambient noise, subtly shaping our thoughts, elevating stress, and eroding our capacity for presence and rest.

This exhibition acknowledges the quiet toll of that overload and offers a gentle counterbalance. Through visual art, space, and silence, Rest and Recharge creates an environment that encourages slowing down, tuning inward, and reconnecting with rhythms that sustain us rather than deplete us. The works on view explore rest not as withdrawal or passivity, but as an active, necessary practice—one rooted in attention, care, and renewal.

The exhibition features work from over forty artists, including: Joan Ackerman-Zimny, Cat Aldana, Anna Archinger, Beverly Behrens, Sinead Carus, Margarete de Soleil, Maureen Ivy Fisher, Jennifer L. Moderated by Farah Salem, artists Marcela Adeze Okeke, Maureen Ivy Fisher, and Jennifer L. Hodges discuss their own relationship to rest. What brings a sense of grounding or ease? What practices, places, or moments allow the body to soften and the mind to breathe?

RSVP to the Reception

","type":null,"state":"published","slug":"rest-and-recharge","created_at":"2026-02-23 16:13:13.952","updated_at":"2026-02-23 16:13:13.952","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":1230,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":"2026-03-01 13:00:00","opening_ends_at":"2026-03-01 15:00:00","searchable":"'00':11B,14B,278B '1':6B,9B,10B,274B,277B '2026':275B '3':13B 'ackerman':168B 'ackerman-zimni':167B 'acknowledg':92B 'action':70B 'activ':147B 'adez':216B,286B 'agostino':198B 'aldana':171B 'alert':45B 'allow':314B 'ambient':74B 'ami':224B 'anna':172B 'arching':173B 'art':106B 'artist':164B,269B,284B 'attent':153B 'behren':175B 'betti':260B 'bever':174B 'bodi':316B 'breath':323B 'bring':302B 'brushwood':16B 'capac':85B 'care':28B,154B 'carol':201B 'carus':177B 'cat':170B 'center':17B 'constant':44B 'counterbal':103B 'creat':113B 'david':205B 'de':179B 'deborah':257B 'demand':67B 'deplet':131B 'discuss':271B,295B 'eas':308B 'elev':80B 'emili':242B 'encourag':117B 'environ':115B 'erod':83B 'exhibit':91B,158B 'explor':137B 'farah':282B 'featur':159B 'fisher':183B,290B 'forti':163B 'free':21B 'gentl':102B 'given':59B 'ground':306B 'headlin':47B 'hodg':186B,294B 'hope':199B 'hutter':188B 'immedi':69B 'includ':165B 'inform':53B 'invit':33B 'inward':121B 'ivi':182B,289B 'j.c':255B 'jacalin':218B 'jack':189B 'jennif':184B,292B 'joan':166B 'join':262B 'jua':213B 'juli':207B 'karen':193B 'kathryn':232B,240B 'kellerman':192B 'kirsten':236B 'kloubec':194B 'l':185B,247B,293B 'letitia':246B 'levun':197B 'levun-agostino':196B 'lilach':238B 'limbo':200B 'linger':72B 'lisa':211B 'lorra':234B 'luc':202B 'mani':71B 'marcela':215B,285B 'march':5B,8B,273B 'margaret':178B 'marti':230B 'maureen':181B,288B 'messag':65B 'mice':204B 'miell':220B 'mikulski':210B 'mind':321B 'moder':280B 'moment':313B 'moritz':191B 'naren':206B 'nauman':209B 'nauman-mikulski':208B 'necessari':148B 'nemacheck':212B 'nervous':55B 'nochio':214B 'nois':75B 'offer':100B 'okek':217B,287B 'one':150B 'open':4B,266B 'oser':219B 'overload':98B 'panel':270B 'park':221B 'passiv':143B 'patrick':203B 'paula':226B 'paus':38B 'peepl':223B 'phylli':195B 'pilkington':225B 'place':311B 'pm':12B,15B,279B 'poda':227B 'popko':229B 'pott':231B 'practic':25B,149B,310B 'presenc':87B 'quiet':94B 'radic':26B 'rare':58B 'rather':129B 'raychel':249B 'recept':267B,327B 'recharg':3A,24B,112B 'reconnect':123B 'relationship':298B 'renew':156B 'rest':1A,22B,89B,110B,138B,300B 'rhonda':228B 'rhythm':125B 'rochell':222B 'rodrigu':233B 'root':151B 'rsvp':324B 'rudman':235B 'ruth':187B 'ryerson':19B 'salem':283B 'satur':42B 'saunder':237B 'schrag':239B 'scott':241B 'self':27B 'sens':304B 'settl':62B,243B 'shape':77B 'silenc':109B 'sinead':176B 'slow':118B 'soften':318B 'sol':245B 'soleil':180B 'space':107B 'spacious':37B 'star':248B 'steffani':251B 'steinbach':250B 'stream':51B 'stress':81B 'subt':76B 'sue':253B 'sunday':7B 'sustain':127B 'system':56B 'thought':79B 'time':60B 'toll':95B 'truli':66B 'tulk':252B 'tune':120B 'turayhi':254B 'uncertain':31B 'unrel':50B 'urgent':46B 'us':128B,132B,263B 'vavi':244B 'view':136B 'villalon':256B 'visitor':34B 'visual':105B 'vonti':190B 'weil':258B 'withdraw':141B 'wolff':261B 'wood':20B 'work':134B,160B 'world':32B,41B 'zimni':169B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1771863190/mfbpvfsecwt6sbazrm6u.jpg","calendar":null,"carousel":false,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":28473,"title":"She Was with Artemisia Vocal Trio","starts_at":"2026-03-14 13:00:00","ends_at":"2026-03-14 15:00:00","body":"
She Was with Artemisia Vocal Trio

Saturday, March 14 | 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm | Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods | $25 (free Veteran and pay-what-you-can tickets available)

She Was is a moving vocal performance by Artemisia Vocal Trio that honors the voices, stories, and lived experiences of women across time and place. The program revives past and little-known stories of women and celebrates the storytellers among us today who are keeping their legacies and influences alive. These stories are sung to life through a mix of folkloric vocal traditions and original music created by the trio, alongside four newly commissioned works by living female composers.

Enhancing the event is a culinary offering by Chef Lindsay Johnson, whose work brings an additional layer of care, creativity, and nourishment to the experience. Their contributions deepen the connections between the composers’ work and the prairie environment that inspired it.

This event not only highlights the artistic achievements of the participating Veterans, but also underscores the power of collaboration across artistic disciplines. Water(color) for the Soul invites audiences to listen, to see, and to experience the prairie anew, through the eyes and voices of those who have shaped these works.

We hope to see you there!

-The Arts & Music Team at Brushwood

PS- Are you interested in art and nature events on the weekend instead? Don't miss bouquet with Rogue Wave Dance at Brushwood on May 3!
","type":null,"state":"published","slug":"watercolor-for-the-soul-sounds-of-the-prairie","created_at":"2026-04-28 05:05:01.485","updated_at":"2026-04-28 05:05:01.485","excerpt":"","is_timeless":false,"organization_id":1230,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'00':25B '1':23B '10':24B '11':27B '3':280B '30':28B 'academi':175B 'achiev':199B 'across':211B 'alongsid':169B 'also':205B 'anew':230B 'art':138B,174B,250B,260B 'artist':166B,198B,212B 'audienc':220B 'black':72B 'botan':165B,173B 'bouquet':271B 'bring':75B 'brushwood':30B,254B,277B 'celebr':57B 'center':31B 'collabor':63B,156B,210B 'collect':79B 'color':2A,11B,47B,215B 'compos':87B,116B,183B 'composit':148B 'connect':126B,180B 'contribut':177B 'creat':84B 'creativ':62B,160B 'culmin':43B 'danc':275B 'deepen':178B 'disciplin':213B 'enrich':153B 'environ':139B,188B 'event':56B,193B,263B 'experi':144B,227B 'expert':161B 'explor':134B 'express':121B 'eye':233B 'final':70B 'free':35B 'friday':20B,21B 'get':36B 'graphic':82B,103B 'haydon':163B 'heeyoung':167B 'highlight':196B 'histori':99B 'hope':244B 'imagin':113B 'immers':92B 'inspir':94B,190B 'instead':267B 'interdisciplinari':155B 'interest':258B 'interpret':111B 'intersect':136B 'invit':110B,219B 'join':39B 'kathryn':162B 'kim':168B 'landscap':97B 'life':77B 'listen':222B 'may':22B,279B 'medium':119B 'member':170B 'memori':124B 'miss':270B 'moon':73B 'music':67B,251B 'narrat':123B 'natur':262B 'offer':114B 'origin':81B 'particip':133B,202B 'perform':19B,44B 'person':122B 'place':128B 'poet':158B 'power':59B,208B 'prairi':9A,18B,54B,102B,187B,229B 'present':71B 'process':132B 'project':150B 'ps':255B 'represent':106B 'rogu':273B 'ryerson':33B 'score':83B,104B 'season':60B 'see':224B,246B 'seri':90B 'shape':240B 'soul':5A,14B,50B,218B 'sound':6A,15B,51B,108B,141B 'storytel':65B 'team':252B 'throughout':129B 'ticket':38B 'translat':142B 'trio':74B 'underscor':206B 'uniqu':118B 'us':40B 'veteran':86B,203B 'vibrant':146B 'visual':105B,147B 'voic':235B 'water':1A,10B,46B,214B 'wave':274B 'weekend':266B 'wood':34B 'work':184B,242B 'workshop':93B,131B","thumbnail":"http://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1777352617/i0qkHE-saZ_PsjdrJsDB5T7KSY1OigNPYouRDdIJR11SenC8bbe-YLFtsMFhto_VT18IuMV9goJbywm1wUGuXdHMwe9NlugudLZHtR5M0K1a4fFP4EAz9fkvb_jve3b2GR6eIihXIOboL1UKgZgFUuMvOC0lOHy4gouydNSsJjU_pikpqn.jpg","calendar":null,"carousel":false,"category_name":"Performance"},{"id":30382,"title":"Mother Earth Market","starts_at":"2026-05-09 10:00:00","ends_at":"2026-05-10 17:00:00","body":"
The Mother Earth Market features and celebrates local artists, makers, vendors, and organizations who are inspired by “Mother Earth” and are working towards a more sustainable future.
