With a soft palette and layers of smooth brushwork, her dreamlike compositions capture the essence of the landscape in a style that moves between abstraction and realism. Sara MacCulloch's paintings are inspired by the rocky coast, fields and vast skies that surround her Nova Scotia studio. Executed in a spontaneous, painterly style with rich color and simplified forms, her work evokes a sense of place, capturing the ever-changing light and atmosphere of the Atlantic coast. The show will open December 1st and run through January 24th and will include 35 recent works by the three artists.
\r\n\r\n
Photography is an important part of the gallery’s collection of contemporary art. Each of the artists in this show has developed a unique process to represent the creative breadth, depth, and subliminal interest of this medium with a perspective that is fresh and engaging.
\r\n\r\n
Joshua Jensen-Nagle is well known for his captivating and evocative large scale photographs. In his work, beaches, mountains, European landmarks, and grand interiors become a distant memory, as he transforms his images into a dream state for the viewer. He explores various effects, compositions and techniques to create an atmosphere of illusion, nostalgia and imagination, while still capturing a sense of place and time.
\r\n\r\n
David Burdeny focuses on structure, balance, space and detail which he translates into his observations of mystery and potential in our modern world. He explores both opulent and austere interiors, as well as expansive, meditative landscapes and vistas, always using the sensuality of color to its full effect. Whether focused on ordinary spaces, iconic settings, or the natural world, his photographs border a line between the abstract and real, the physical and the atmospheric, the actual and the idealized.
\r\n\r\n
Maggie Meiners is passionate about the processes of image making and picture taking, as well as the simple act of finding subject by looking with open eyes. In her new series, Conscious States, she infuses black and white landscapes with abstract floating circles, representing the mind’s flow from one state of consciousness to the next. As in all of Maggie’s work, there is an intriguing openness that allows the viewer to experience the images with their own interpretations.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Photo Credit: Joshua Jensen-Nagle, More Mountains, More You, 41 x 43 in.
\r\n","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"photo-17-alternative-perspectives","created_at":"2018-10-22 20:42:08.485827","updated_at":"2018-10-22 21:16:00.987223","excerpt":null,"is_timeless":false,"organization_id":549,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'17':2A,27B '1st':52B '24th':57B '35':61B '41':348B '43':350B 'abstract':245B,298B 'act':276B 'actual':254B 'allow':327B 'alter':28B 'altern':3A 'alway':217B 'ann':13B,16B 'announc':22B 'art':80B 'artist':38B,67B,84B 'atmospher':164B,252B 'auster':207B 'balanc':184B 'beach':131B 'becom':138B 'black':293B 'border':240B 'breadth':97B 'burdeni':6B,40B,180B 'captiv':122B 'captur':172B 'circl':300B 'collect':77B 'color':222B 'composit':158B 'conscious':289B,310B 'contemporari':79B 'creat':162B 'creativ':96B 'credit':339B 'david':5B,39B,179B 'decemb':51B 'depth':98B 'detail':187B 'develop':89B 'distant':140B 'dream':149B 'effect':157B,226B 'engag':112B 'european':133B 'evoc':124B 'exhibit':32B 'expans':212B 'experi':331B 'explor':155B,203B 'eye':284B 'featur':33B 'find':278B 'float':299B 'flow':305B 'focus':181B,228B 'fresh':110B 'full':225B 'galleri':15B,18B,37B,75B 'grand':136B 'group':31B 'icon':232B 'ideal':257B 'illus':166B 'imag':146B,266B,333B 'imagin':169B 'import':71B 'includ':60B 'infus':292B 'interest':101B 'interior':137B,208B 'interpret':337B 'intrigu':324B 'januari':56B 'jensen':8B,42B,115B,342B 'jensen-nagl':114B,341B 'joshua':7B,41B,113B,340B 'known':119B 'landmark':134B 'landscap':214B,296B 'larg':125B 'line':242B 'look':281B 'louck':14B,17B 'maggi':10B,45B,258B,318B 'make':267B 'medit':213B 'medium':104B 'meiner':11B,46B,259B 'memori':141B 'mind':303B 'modern':200B 'mountain':132B,345B 'mysteri':195B 'nagl':9B,43B,116B,343B 'natur':236B 'new':287B 'next':313B 'nostalgia':167B 'observ':193B 'one':307B 'open':24B,50B,283B,325B 'opul':205B 'ordinari':230B 'part':72B 'passion':261B 'perspect':4A,29B,107B 'photo':1A,26B,338B 'photograph':127B,239B 'photographi':68B 'physic':249B 'pictur':269B 'place':176B 'pleas':20B 'potenti':197B 'process':92B,264B 'real':247B 'recent':62B 'repres':94B,301B 'run':54B 'scale':126B 'sens':174B 'sensual':220B 'seri':288B 'set':233B 'show':48B,87B 'simpl':275B 'space':185B,231B 'state':150B,290B,308B 'still':171B 'structur':183B 'subject':279B 'sublimin':100B 'take':270B 'techniqu':160B 'three':66B 'time':178B 'transform':144B 'translat':190B 'uniqu':91B 'use':218B 'various':156B 'viewer':153B,329B 'vista':216B 'well':118B,210B,272B 'whether':227B 'white':295B 'work':35B,63B,130B,320B 'world':201B,237B 'x':349B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668404/tv2v5qcpmcgdnep0qo8h.jpg","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669470/event_ics_1721669470441.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":5377,"title":"Photography 2017","starts_at":"2017-12-02 19:00:00","ends_at":"2018-01-31 20:00:00","body":"","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"photography-2017","created_at":"2018-10-22 20:42:09.398123","updated_at":"2018-10-22 21:15:07.549033","excerpt":null,"is_timeless":false,"organization_id":549,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'2017':2A 'photographi':1A","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668409/vs3jl1iqnro3jw6zaw3m.jpg","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669475/event_ics_1721669474564.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":5730,"title":"Stephen Dinsmore: New Paintings","starts_at":"2018-03-16 22:00:00","ends_at":"2018-05-14 23:00:00","body":"
Anne Loucks Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition of 30 recent paintings
\r\nby Nebraska artist Stephen Dinsmore.
\r\n\r\n
We are pleased to announce the opening of our new exhibition of thirty paintings by Stephen Dinsmore.
\r\nThe show includes some exceptional examples of his landscape, figurative and still life compositions and will be on view through May 14th.
\r\n\r\n
Stephen Dinsmore is well known for his abstract landscape paintings, as well as his still life and figurative compositions that suggest influences of Matisse, Bonnard, and Diebenkorn. Included in the exhibition will be twenty-five exceptional examples of the artist’s paintings from 1962-1989.
\r\n\r\n
Sally Michel Avery’s career as an artist spanned nearly 70 years, beginning in 1924 with her time at the Arts Students League in New York. In 1926, she married the celebrated artist, Milton Avery and for the next 40 years, they painted side by side acting as each other’s model, champion, and collaborator. Together, they developed a distinct modernist style using fields of high key color and flat semi-abstract forms. During this time, Sally also worked to promote her husband’s career as a painter and provided for her family financially as an illustrator.
\r\n\r\n
This exhibition focuses on a selection of Sally’s abstract landscape paintings representing some of her favorite places, as well as figurative work depicting time spent with family and friends. Consistent throughout her paintings is her use flat, simplified shapes and forms, as well as broad fields of bright, vibrant color which she used to express her feelings towards her subjects. One can sense that her paintings reflect how she lived her life – modern and fresh, with a sense of grace, charm and optimism.
\r\n\r\n
Sally continued to paint into her 90s and died in 2003 at the age of 100. Her work is held in many public collections including the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Wadsworth Athenaeum, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n","type":"Event","state":"published","slug":"sally-michel-avery-landscape-and-figures","created_at":"2018-10-22 20:44:10.501659","updated_at":"2018-10-22 21:05:38.531939","excerpt":null,"is_timeless":false,"organization_id":549,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'-1989':41B '100':239B '1924':56B '1926':69B '1962':40B '2003':234B '40':81B '70':52B '90s':230B 'abstract':114B,149B 'act':88B 'age':237B 'also':120B 'ann':7B 'announc':13B 'art':62B,256B,261B,270B 'artist':36B,49B,74B 'athenaeum':264B 'averi':3A,19B,44B,76B 'begin':54B 'bright':188B 'broad':185B 'career':46B,127B 'celebr':73B 'champion':94B 'charm':221B 'collabor':96B 'collect':247B 'color':109B,190B 'consist':170B 'continu':225B 'corcoran':267B 'depict':163B 'develop':99B 'die':232B 'distinct':101B 'exampl':33B 'except':32B 'exhibit':26B,141B 'express':195B 'famili':135B,167B 'favorit':156B 'feel':197B 'field':105B,186B 'figur':6A,22B,161B 'financi':136B 'five':31B 'flat':111B,177B 'focus':142B 'form':115B,181B 'fresh':215B 'friend':169B 'galleri':9B,268B 'grace':220B 'held':243B 'high':107B 'husband':125B 'illustr':139B 'includ':23B,248B 'key':108B 'landscap':4A,20B,150B 'leagu':64B 'life':212B 'live':210B 'louck':8B 'mani':245B 'marri':71B 'metropolitan':258B 'michel':2A,18B,43B 'milton':75B 'model':93B 'modern':213B 'modernist':102B 'museum':251B,259B 'nation':250B 'near':51B 'new':66B 'next':80B 'one':201B 'open':15B 'optim':223B 'paint':38B,84B,151B,173B,206B,227B 'painter':130B 'place':157B 'pleas':11B 'promot':123B 'provid':132B 'public':246B 'reflect':207B 'repres':152B 'salli':1A,17B,42B,119B,147B,224B 'select':145B 'semi':113B 'semi-abstract':112B 'sens':203B,218B 'shape':179B 'side':85B,87B 'simplifi':178B 'span':50B 'spent':165B 'student':63B 'style':103B 'subject':200B 'throughout':171B 'time':59B,118B,164B 'togeth':97B 'toward':198B 'twenti':30B 'twenty-f':29B 'use':104B,176B,193B 'vibrant':189B 'wadsworth':263B 'well':159B,183B 'women':253B 'work':121B,162B,241B 'year':53B,82B 'york':67B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721668458/bgguvuigj8vkl9qpvwut.jpg","calendar":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/raw/upload/v1721669523/event_ics_1721669523479.ics","carousel":null,"category_name":"Exhibitions"},{"id":9,"title":"Yaz Krehbiel and Sara MacCulloch: Slowing Time","starts_at":"2018-11-09 17:00:00","ends_at":"2019-01-08 19:00:00","body":"
Anne Loucks Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Slowing Time, a new exhibition of paintings by California artist Yaz Krehbiel and Canadian artist Sara MacCulloch. The show, which runs through January 8th, includes 25 paintings by the artists whose work pays homage to the ever-changing effects of light, color and atmosphere on the landscape that surrounds their studios.

Please join us for the Opening Reception this Friday, November 9th from 5 - 7 pm with Yaz Krehbiel to celebrate the show, as well as the launch of his book, Slowing Time.

We'd love to see you! Melanie Parke combines lush, textured surfaces with brilliant color in her still life, interior, and abstract compositions. Included in the exhibition will be twenty-five exceptional examples of the artist’s work from 1992-2015. The show also celebrates the recent release of the Getty Museums’ retrospective monograph, Rodney Smith: A Leap of Faith.

The book’s author, Getty photography curator Paul Martineau, will be present at the opening reception at the gallery, Friday September 29th from 5 – 7:30 pm.

Saori on Seaplane Wing, no.2, Domincan Republic, 2010

Rodney Smith (1947-2016) was a prominent photographer whose whimsical work invited comparison to that of surrealist painter Rene Magritte. Long acclaimed for his iconic images that combine portraiture and landscape, Smith created enchanted worlds full of subtle contradictions and surprises. Using only film and light, his un-retouched, dream-like images are matched in quality by the craft and physical beauty of his prints. Throughout his four-decade career as an artist, he cared deeply about sharing his vision of the world with humor, grace, and optimism. “I want people to see the beauty and whimsy in life, not its ugliness. I feel the need to reach out for its soul, its depth, and its underlying beauty. I represent a world that is possible if people act their best,” he wrote.

Born and raised in New York City, Smith was inspired by trips to the photography collection at the Museum of Modern Art. After receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia in 1970, he studied photography under Walker Evans at Yale University while receiving a masters in theology. While he rose to prominence as a fashion photographer in the 90s, his work clearly transcended from fashion photography into fine art during this time. Today, Rodney Smith’s photographs are included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Getty Museum, among others.

The Rodney Smith: A Leap of Faith exhibition includes a selection of black and white and color images spanning the artist’s extraordinary career. Set against a backdrop of beautiful cities, gardens, and landscapes, each composition reflects his response to the world around him and his attempt to offer beauty, wit and whimsey to a world sometimes filled with chaos. From Reed Leaping over a Giant Top Hat to Saori on an Airplane Wing and Reed Reading Upside Down, each image in the exhibition combines brilliant composition, gorgeous color, and magical light with Rodney’s distinctive style of grace, substance and humor.

*

For additional images or information, please contact Anne Loucks at 847-835-8500 or anne@loucksgallery.com.

Anne Loucks Gallery specializes in contemporary American painting, photography and works on paper. In each of her compositions, Laurie plays with our sense of perspective and perfection, as she blurs the lines between photography, painting and digital media. In her Trees series, she meticulously splits and rejoins branches, trunks and leaves to create an image driven by her artistic vision. In her series of ornate French interiors, she combines brilliant color, detail, and light with a kaleidoscope effect created with mathematical precision.
