Located in the heart of the River North Gallery District for 25 years, Addington Gallery focuses on dynamic contemporary painting, both abstract and representational, with many of the gallery’s artists staking their claim somewhere in between categories. Process and materials play a large role with most of the artists represented, who work in a wide range of contemporary styles, subjects, and media. The gallery offers a full range of services, including installation, painting restoration and conservation, framing consultation, and corporate curating.

\r\nWaterloo, Hirst, and Dannelly are all leading artists who work with the ancient technique known as encaustic and are currently part of the exhibition Lucent Ventures currently on view at the gallery. They will discuss the evolution of their work and what led them to begin working in this fascinating medium, which involves the use of molten wax and pigment and has ancient roots reaching back over 2,000 years in Egypt.

\r\nThe three artists, all currently living and working in Chicago, will talk about how they have adapted the technique and applied it to their specific vision of contemporary painting and will discuss specific techniques and unusual approaches to the medium.
\r\n
\r\nRefreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served. Parking is available on the street and in nearby lots.

\r\n\r\nKathleen Waterloo creates encaustic paintings (encaustic: an ancient technique utilizing pigment mixed with molten beeswax) which are loosely geometric color-based works inspired by racing track maps and 2-D plans. Responding intuitively to her passions for and intellectual interest in the design of man-made human environments, Waterloo creates color formed space that blurs the line between 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional perception.

\r\n\r\nJeffrey Hirst combines encaustic and silkscreen, a technique not often seen (perhaps because he pioneered the approach), literally building these paintings on deep, beveled, irregularly shaped sculptural supports. Abstract, visceral, and packed full of evocative content, these paintings confidently engage both body and mind.

\r\n\r\nSteven Carrelli’s minimalist egg-tempera 'still-life' paintings employ close observation, the poetic possibilities of the commonplace and the contemplative nature of craft to explore themes related to permanence, temporality, ambition and vulnerability. His works have been exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions and have appeared in a variety of publications, including the Chicago Sun-Times, the Chicago Reader, New American Paintings, Art Scene Chicago 2000, and Time Out Chicago. Carrelli’s works are included in a variety of private and public collections, including the Illinois State Museum, Elmhurst College, The College of Lake County, Northwestern University, and DePaul University, among others. Awards include grants from the Ruth and Harold Chenven Foundation of New York, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, and the Union League of Chicago.

Current Exhibition: \"Chromaticity\" featuring new paintings by Joanne Mattera, Lisa Pressman, Kathleen Waterloo, and Alicia LaChance. These four artists are connected by a focused, dynamic relationship to color. These four artists have developed their own specific color-based vocabulary that not only engages in emotive expression, but at times reflects a nearly scientific sense of inquiry. Each uses materials that reflect this sense of experimentation: Beeswax and ancient encaustic processes, cold wax-based mediums, fresco techniques, and flashe. Whether painted in a spirit of expressionism, or with an eye towards design, or engaging both color and material as phenomenon, the ambitious paintings that result are works that are both rigorous and lush, exacting and playful, buoyant and complex. The exhibition continue through September 1, 2019.

During the 3rd Mid-Summer Art Walk in River North on Friday, July 12, the gallery will feature in its main space: Rebecca Crowell, Overlays: New Cold Wax Paintings. This will be Crowell's first solo show at Addington Gallery.
We will also be featuring new work by Lisa Pressman, and we will be welcoming Alicia LaChance and Joanne Mattera to the gallery with an installation of new paintings by each. These pieces reveal highly personal, technically rigorous investigations of color, texture, and space. The forms might be different, but what these accomplished artists have in common is the pioneering urge to reach forward to achieve and share some kind of almost sublime, personally transformative visual experience...all this while standing firmly and knowledgeably on a deep, critical understanding of the history of painting.

In her newest work, Dawson unites objects from the natural environment and autobiographical elements with surreal, dream-like imagery to create work of both physical and emotional depth and complexity. Layers of paint are etched, scratched and subtracted to create a history and to conjure memories.
Says Dawson, \"My work evolves from an observation of our natural world, our social circles and our internal psyche. In my work I weave images from past cultures, myths and folklore along with symbolic elements of modern life. I paint intuitively and playfully employing various mediums along the way. I consider my work an observation, meditation and celebration of life.\"

Susan Kraut's paintings are intended to capture a particular moment in time, revealed in the skies seen out the windows and in the human-scaled interiors of rooms. Inside, there are hints that something has happened or, possibly, is imminent; food is left half-eaten on a table, newspapers are left partially read. The human occupants are never present, but they have left evidence of their activities. The times of day captured are often close to sunrise or sunset, when the light is less intense, changing quickly, creating a hushed atmosphere.
These paintings convey a stillness, an instant which has been observed and held in memory. They are created with slow, layered applications of paint, intended to slow down the eye and allow the objects and places depicted to hover in a space not perfectly resolved. The window, a central element in all of the paintings, becomes a metaphor for the nature of painting itself: a framed, selected view of a small segment of the world we inhabit.
Kraut has been teaching at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for over 25 years. During that time she has influenced a generation of art students and artists that have learned the importance of observation, and who now echo those values and ideas in their own work.

Every summer, Allison travels in Italy, creates from a makeshift tabletop studio and experiences the expansive nature of new environments for inspiration. This has transpired in tandem with her position as a Director and an Adjunct Professor for a summer study abroad program at the Santa Reparata International School of Art in Florence. Over the last twelve years, this immersive experience has played a major role in her artistic aesthetic and passion for aged surfaces revealing the palimpsest of time.
Allison's paintings explore transformation and its unique presence in the patinas that build up where time worn architectural structures, the human touch and atmospheric effects coalesce. She builds surfaces in both additive and subtractive processes with layered colors, and suggestive drawing/mark making in both experimental and intentional approaches.
Although she works in a wide range of media, most of Allison's paintings are made on a braced panel with oil paint, cold wax and may include powdered marble, dry pigment, and varying drawing materials. Her approach to painting resides in the interplay between recognition and suggestion, specificity and chance. Allison is interested in evoking materiality and meaning from a free-spirited studio practice with no preconceived notions of what may happen. Allison B. Cooke earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Drawing and Painting from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. This is Susan Hall's debut at Addington Gallery. Susan's ambitious paintings express her love for nature and the animal kingdom, and place this love in the context of the domestic, evoked by the lace impression surfaces she uses as the ground of her compositions.
Marissa's detailed, intricate encaustic surfaces bring a beautiful sense of order to her explorations in color and texture. Marissa has a unique and sensitive approach to the medium of encaustic.
Susan's and Marissa's paintings hang alongside each other beautifully, each offering a comfortable place to slow down, rest, and meditate. Both of these artists are experimenting with process, texture, pattern, and surface, and are creating highly evocative work.

Recently, like me, you may have become aware of the fact that you are looking at the same walls in your living space more than ever before. In this time of sheltering in place, we all share the need for the presence of meaningful art to bring new moments of life and meaning to our environment. We often look to the arts in their many forms to provide renewal and hope. This exhibition is a special expression of this calling that artists possess and answer for our benefit. The artists featured in this exhibition have made unique, one of a kind works with their own hands, and their desire is to share them with others and make a connection with viewers. Most of these works were created recently as a response to current events, and in my opinion, they all possess a special power and spirit that belies their intimate dimensions.
It may be that at times like these, artists are at their best, stripping down to the very core, the motivations that compel them to make art. This beautiful exhibition of small jewel-like objects and images demonstrates that in a whisper there is real power. The size of these pieces allows you, the art viewer, to engage with (and acquire) this work easily. Concerns like measurements and decor can be set aside, and one must only react and embrace these beautiful statements that reassert our shared humanity and connection in challenging times.

Cat Crotchet is an innovative practitioner of pattern-based abstract painting. Using the medium of wax and pigment (encaustic painting), Cat's visual vocabulary includes stenciled shapes, layered patterns, and burned-in texture accomplished using heated metal much like a branding iron. Cat uses a bold but sophisticated color sense to engage the eye, and creates a sense of complexity through built up textures and layering. The results are color fields that feel at once organic and man made, rich with detail and incident. The complexity of her surfaces and the tactile nature of her work engage both mind and body, ensuring that we will always find new elements in these paintings as they unfold and reveal themselves over the course of multiple viewings.

The paintings of Chicago artist Joan Holleb occupy an exciting place between process and image, between poetry and narrative. The material qualities of these works set them apart from most paintings, generating the unexpected effect of slowing down our gaze and causing us to look carefully at the interaction of copper, patina, and paint on the surface of the work.
Holleb begins the act of painting by pouring a patina solution on the surface of the copper and letting it run in various directions and oxidize. Typically, this process dictates the direction the composition will develop, and the use of chance and spontaneous activity becomes the foundation for all that follows.

Julia Katz: Solo Exhibition
Julia Katz creates work that consistently explores the movement of our bodies in our day to day lives. her current series of paintings are based on her observation of human activity around public places in chicago. Images featured in this body of work are derived by watching people congregate for concerts and public events as well as along the lake shore. While the artist's presence at these specific locations and events serve as the initial inspiration for the work, the paintings quickly become universal, as we search through the faces of the subjects of her paintings, and identify gesture, attitude, and body language. Katz's active, gestural brushwork is strongly in evidence here, and the overt textures and aggessive painterliness of her compositions engagingly echo the subject matter, exhibiting vibrancy, action, and energetic life.

Late Fall Art Walk in River North
Alicia LaChance makes large scale, process driven paintings built up through layers of acrylic, casein, latex and spray paint on a fresco-secco ground over canvas. Her mark-making involves traditional brushwork, sign maker's techniques, silk screen, taping, powdered pigment stains, scraping and sanding. LaChance's work conveys a layering and compression of multicultural traditions and art historical references, from ancient folk traditions to street art. Her highly worked paintings often use open source graphs as a compositional map and armature to hang intellectual ideas from as they relate to pushing boundaries in abstraction and process.

This ambitious group show presents an exciting selection of artists who have each developed a unique visual vocabulary based on their history with color. The works in this exhibition derive their unique chromatic characteristics from each artist's understanding of color properties, meanings, and relationships. This understanding is married with the artists' experimental sensibilities in the studio. Shape, pattern, and occasionally imagery often provide the framework for the color investigations present in the work, but the color explorations are rarely at the mere service of description and imagery. Instead, color itself most often acts as the primary life force of this work. In addition to their attraction to saturated tonalities, these artists demonstrate a commitment to process, materiality, and the physicality of the surface. Texture plays an important role in these works, and the tactile qualities of surface, which are widely varied, work hand in hand with each composition's optical properties.

This group show features the work of four painters that use a variety of media to explore the subject that intrigues and moves them most: nature and the landscape. This exciting grouping of artists reaveals through seductive paintings the breadth of possibilities that the landscape subject continues to offer.
Julie B. Montgomery distills the poetry in her depicted locations. atmospheric, subtle, almost ephemeral, these paintings whisper quiet truths about color, space, light, and form.
Diana Cutrone sees possibilities and potential narrative in her subtle yet dramatic vistas. Often rendered from the perspective of an ascending or arriving airplane, these evocative works suggest the thrill of possibility and new experience, and the potential beauty in alternate points of view.
Paula Blackwell uses the encaustic process to create deeply expressive, evocatively atmospheric works that exist in a balanced state between realism and process-oriented expressionism. Her recent works exhibit a beautiful sense of depth, subtle shifts of light, and atmospheric translucent surfaces.
Joan Holleb creates paintings on copper which occupy an exciting place between process and image. Michael Hoffman was born in 1965 in New York City. After relocating with his family to Washington state, he spent his teenage years clearing a six-acre plot of land with his family and building a seven-sided geodesic dome house. Hoffman studied film and photography in college, and after graduation he took his camera and, over a ten-year period, traveled extensively throughout Europe. While traveling he lived with, performed with, and documented circus performers and their communities. Michael draws on his eclectic past for inspiration. He is strongly influenced by his travels throughout Spain and France and rich colors and textures marked by time. His artwork is collected by individuals and corporations worldwide.
Says Hoffman of his work: \"My paintings are meditative studies done with rich colors and bold graphic compositions. I try to create work that both captivates and calms. A common theme in my painting is the relationship between rigid linear form and the organic flow of nature. I believe inclusion of these two elements creates a certain universal harmony in many of my paintings.\"
\"My pieces are also about the act of painting itself. I explore the physical nature of my materials and push to use unique and original methods of applying them. Many times there is strong evidence of my physical relationship to the canvas as I paint, using my body motion as a natural pendulum and the random arcs of my markings. Other works are done on wood panels that I coat with a plaster mixture and carve into before it sets. The geometrical markings bring to mind old nautical maps and celestial charts. I then apply multiple rounds of color washes (oil paints thinned with a clear oil-based polyurethane medium) giving the work a richly colored, almost glass-like surface. By virtue of the tactile painting surfaces and transparent and linear handling much of the process is revealed that can be traced chronologically. This leaves the paintings with a sense of history and 'archeology'.\"

July 1 and 2 Addington Gallery is hosting a two day open house featuring the bronze figurative sculpture of noted New Zealand artist Judson Chatfield
Friday 12 -7pm, and Saturday 12-5pm.
Chatfield's sculpture is intimate and made to be viewed up close. His figures exist in various states of action, and the surfaces reveal the expressive hand of the artist forming the works from clay and wax before each piece is cast in bronze.

For her Senior Capstone project, Ayanna Johnson has developed an exhibition that will focus on how young developing artists interact with 'perfection'. This is something many of us face in one form or more in our lifetime. The artists included in this exhibition have their own interpretation of how they interact with this idea based on their own life experiences.
Biography
Ayanna is a Senior studying Business Administration and art student at Northern Illinois University. She is curating an art exhibition as her Senior Capstone Honors Project. She plans to continue her education in the Arts to earn her master's in fine arts with a focus in Painting, and to own an art gallery one day. The theme of this show and questions surrounding it, is something she has struggled with for as long as she can remember. As a Black Woman pursuing a career in a white-dominated field, this need to strive towards achieving perfection often seems even that much more strenuous. Her goal for this project is for those entering the gallery to not only reflect on where many ‘perfectionist’ ideas come from but also why this is so common among creatives.

Joan Holleb creates unique large and small scale oil paintings on copper, feauring images of wooded areas, and various other landscape vistas.
With deep insight and compelling aesthetic discernment, Joan Holleb employs her unique process of pouring patina on copper as a first step. Holleb then follows the suggestions of the resulting linear elements using oils, divining and building compositions that evoke ideas about order and structure in a seemingly chaotic natural world. This artist finds his motivation in his drawings and memories of trips to various exotic locations. Recent paintings find their origins in journeys down the Amazon and China's Yangtze River.
Throughout his career, Robin has been inspired by his travels to a few of the world's great rivers. Many of his paintings are based on drawings he did of the Yangtze River in an area that has since been dammed and flooded. It was a unique opportunity to see such a magnificent and haunting landscape. He did these studies during the dry season when sandbars and islands cut the river into many paths.
Eschewing the use of a camera as a tool of reference, Denevan relies solely on the charcoal and sketchbooks he brings with him as he and a guide explore these mighty rivers together in small boats and canoes. Focusing on the shifting shapes before him, Denevan recognized similarities between the sweeping contours of the Yangtze and the serpentine channels of the Amazon from drawings he had done in South America. Though the two are vastly different, the subject of the river as a constant force that carves and sculpts the landscape was overwhelming.
Denevan returned with his drawings to his studio, and began the alchemical act of creating his organically textured paintings using beeswax, resin, oil paint, and in some cases, burnished sheets of aluminum and steel: all materials that enjoy a special and unique relationship with light.
Denevan's paintings are not about mere recollection. They are about sensory recall and evocation. The layers of seductive materials and light-activated surfaces in these works engage our senses, and in doing so, transport us to places that universally resonate.

LaChance makes large scale, process driven paintings built up through layers of acrylic, casein, latex and spray paint on a fresco-secco ground over canvas. Her mark-making involves traditional brushwork, sign maker's techniques, silk screen, taping, powdered pigment stains, scraping and sanding. LaChance's work conveys a layering and compression of multicultural traditions and art historical references, from ancient folk traditions to street art. Her highly worked paintings often use open source graphs as a compositional map and armature to hang intellectual ideas from as they relate to pushing boundaries in abstraction and process. Recently, her painting, New Village I, was reinterpreted as a 27' terrazzo floor public art installation at St. Louis International Airport. This work was also highlighted in the Wall Street Journal.

\"Metaphorically, my backyard is a place of memory and imagination. Beyond my backyard, is the rest of the world. The same sunlight falls in my backyard as it does everywhere else. Nature goes on around us whether we notice it or not.
People, animals, and trees inhabit the ambiguous spaces of these paintings. I combine disparate elements in an effort to spark something that suits me intuitively and has an emotional impact. The imagery comes from my own experience. Patterns are ubiquitous within nature, as are unique organic forms. I bring that awareness to my process of integrating representational figures in abstract surroundings.\" - Julia Katz

Addington Gallery is excited to present our first exhibition featuring the work of Anthony Adcock.
These are powerful, beautiful, and surprising paintings, demonstrating the skilled hand and conceptual foundation of an artist living in the 21st century, and speaking in the painterly language of artists from the 14th Century. The result is a unique voice referencing such movements as Trompe l'Oeil, (a style of hyper-realism popularized in 17th c. Dutch painting), Pop art of the 1960s, conceptual art, and the work of Giotto from the 1300s, all coming together in Adcock's unique voice and perspective.
Says Adcock about his work: \"Much of my work walks the unpopulated intersection of hyperrealist painting and minimal sculpture; it’s generally considered “minimal trompe l’oeil” painting by many. My current body of work explores the similarities between the early renaissance, specifically Giotto, and contemporary construction road signage. Using techniques and materials from the 1300s, I’m rethinking the language of signage and asking questions like “what would Giotto do?”

On view and in conjunction with the Summer Olympic Games
In this series, I chose to paint images of divers in an exploration of the themes of control, surrender, struggle, and destiny. By freezing the action of human figures caught tumbling in space, I attempt to address modern man's existential concerns for meaning and order. In much the same way as a diver works with and against gravity in order to achieve artful grace and precision, the figures in my paintings become metaphors for the intersection of the human and the divine. I find that out of this tension, suspended moments of beauty and grace are revealed. - Steph Roberts

Jeff Hirst creates powerful paintings that rarely conform to a traditional square or rectangular format. Each piece is its own shape, and is encountered almost as one might encounter a wall sculpture. With a beveled depth of between 2 and 4 inches, his paintings stand out from the wall, announcing their own volume. Running counter to this overt physicality is the translucent, airy quality of the paintings' surfaces. In Jeff's experienced hands, encaustic (wax and pigment) holds and embodies the light around it: a beautiful effect that acts as a compelling counterpoint to the painting's structural presence.

My artistic practice is a continuous creative search for raw authenticity in urban environments and human forms that are constantly changing. Individuals change as they experience life and cities develop and/or decay through time. People and places have history and experience. Cities are weathered by time and through use, taking on a personality of their own from the people and the elements that have interacted with them. Looking for subject matter, I find simple things that we see every day, things that become symbolic once they are taken out of context. I experiment with the juxtaposition of places, faces, and architectural designs that reflect my diverse personal experiences.

Two Person Exhibition - Joan Geary and Rebecca Stahr: Echoes of Earth and Sky
Rebecca's recent encaustic paintings merge an interest in process and the encaustic medium with an organic, almost three dimensional approach to developing a composition. Images that seem to reference nature are the accumulation of thousands of little points of pigmented wax applied in layers. The image seems to simultaneously form and dissolve, and speaks to the mutable and atomically fractured nature of our physical environment. With a technique that recalls the repetitive creation of weaving and textiles, Stahr creates images that can be read both as surface and image.
Geary was born in Chicago, IL, but raised in Glenview, a northern suburb. An early encounter with surrealism – specifically Salvador Dali – and the pop art and op art movements of the 1960s laid the foundation for Geary's lifelong obsession with art. As an adolescent, she would take the bus into the city to spend the day walking around The Art Institute of Chicago alone, seeking out those edgy genres that made such bold use of color, shape, and odd juxtapositions; such a foil to her daily life, and so defiant and wholly different than what she knew. Her solo meanderings through the museum lit something up in her, a yearning for something more – to see and create.
Joan works mainly in oil and cold wax, a medium that allows for the buildup of a rich history and patina through amassing layers of paint and excavation back through those layers. Luminosity and light have become trademarks of her work, which explores color and shape inspired by nature and God. Her work has been featured in numerous venues throughout the Midwest, as well as publications such as The Chicago Tribune, The Doings, and a book titled Cold Wax Medium: Techniques, Concepts, and Conversations by Rebecca Crowell and Jerry McLaughlin.

Over the years, Robin Denevan has become known as a master in the technique of encaustic painting (an ancient technique utilizing wax, resin, and pigment), forging a creative path uniquely his own. Not only does Robin create very personal, evocative imagery from these unusual and challenging materials, it is rare to even find contemporary painters creating encaustic paintings in this wide range of sizes.
The textures in these paintings are visceral and evocative, the colors are bold and expressive. Everywhere, you can see the hand of an artist sure in his craft, yet welcoming the new surprises and discoveries in each piece.

Mark Flickinger's reputation as a painter is one of personal experience of the land, patience, attention to detail, and above all, as an insightful artist with unmatched powers of observation. For years, Flickinger has marveled collectors and art viewers with his ability to transport us to the sites that bring him such joy. This current exhibition features selected paintings of locations in the Pacific Northwest, Upstate New York, and the Forest of Fontainebleau, near the village of Barbizon, France.
While these paintings are based on specific locations, Flickinger has a way of making the work speak in a universal way, imparting values about the importance and beauty of the natural world that are universal.

This Saturday March 14th, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., Addington Gallery will be participating in the River North gallery walk. We are opening a fantastic new exhibition, \"Learn to Love\", new mixed media work by Teresa James.
Meet The artist, refreshments served!
While still referencing the materials and techniques of her printmaking background, Teresa's current works are the result of a variety of techniques. She begins by adapting and repurposing historic impressions of maps, animals, and nature, layering and collaging them onto a variety of vintage book covers. The resulting geometric compositions provide a weathered, narrative field, a dimensional receptive site for her imagined, hand drawn figurative imagery, including her personal recurring iconography of winged hands. These hands seem to embody an expressive and creative power. The wings, delicate and mystical, whisper the possibility of a fluid mobility between worlds. The act of juxtaposing these images and blurring distinctions between techniques results in a series of shifting realities at once scientific, observational, and intimately spiritual.

The paintings of Chicago artist Joan Holleb occupy an exciting place between between process and image, between poetry and narrative. The material qualities of these works set them apart from most paintings, generating the unexpected effect of slowing down our gaze and causing us to look carefully at the interaction of copper, patina, and paint on the surface of the work.
Holleb begins the act of painting by pouring a patina solution on the surface of the copper and letting it run in various directions and oxidize. Typically, this process dictates the direction the composition will develop, and the use of chance and spontaneous activity becomes the foundation for all that follows. Says Holleb: \"I actually paint/draw with the patinas and splash them across the metal because I enjoy the uncertainty of what will happen - it creates a challenge as to how to paint the piece.\"
As Holleb develops the work, the paintings become compelling and ambitious meditations on our relationship to the natural world. Holleb uses oil paint to seemingly coax a landscape from the surface of the painting. In some of the recent work, her focus has turned upward, and the light through leaves and branches in the forest has become her subject. \"For me, the light in my paintings is not just the light we see with our eyes but is also an allegorical light, something I think we all need every day in our lives to give us hope.\" Holleb continues: \"I want my paintings to vibrate on the wall and I want viewers to have to stop and wonder for a moment, 'What am I looking at?' - I want to encourage them to create their own interpretations.\"
