Founded during the women’s movement as an alternative to the mainstream gallery system, ARC is one of the longest running art spaces of its kind in the country. As a non-profit, woman artist-run cooperative, ARC continues its feminist tradition by providing exhibition opportunities for professional and emerging artists working in all media based on excellence of artwork, without discrimination toward ethnicity, race, gender, age, class, religious, sexual or political orientation.

Image: ARC Gallery, 2022. Image by Nathan Keay
","type":"EventCategory","state":"published","slug":"exhibitions","created_at":"2018-10-22 18:54:41.176231","updated_at":"2018-10-22 18:54:41.176231","excerpt":"","is_timeless":true,"organization_id":581,"highlighted":true,"opening_starts_at":"2025-07-11 17:00:00","opening_ends_at":"2025-07-11 20:00:00","searchable":"'/exhibitions-archive/lisa-walcott':138B 'absurd':128B 'accomplish':95B 'acknowledg':134B 'alter':89B 'babi':52B 'becom':92B 'bent':77B 'bristl':126B 'broom':57B,125B 'comparison':42B 'conting':120B 'daili':18B 'dear':4A,7B 'deriv':22B 'domest':24B,72B 'dull':32B 'experi':116B 'feat':97B 'floor':61B 'flush':51B 'form':90B,121B 'grappl':9B 'haunt':31B 'hint':129B 'howev':86B 'ingenu':66B 'inspir':20B 'life':5A,8B,19B 'light':13B 'lisa':1A 'look':40B 'make':12B 'mani':69B 'mechan':54B 'monotoni':64B 'motherhood':68B 'move':55B 'movement':119B 'new':96B 'object':123B 'one':81B 'peril':16B 'profound':132B 'protect':38B 'pull':112B 'push':110B 'reach':122B 'referenc':62B,78B 'reli':44B 'role':85B 'safe':36B 'shelf':101B 'space':25B,27B 'stand':102B 'strain':79B 'stress':75B 'structur':73B 'struggl':135B 'support':84B 'sweep':59B 'swing':53B 'tether':118B 'toward':130B 'translat':108B 'uncanni':47B 'visibl':93B 'walcott':2A 'well':34B 'www.arcgallery.org':137B 'www.arcgallery.org/exhibitions-archive/lisa-walcott':136B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1734539300/gbbl0yldwjznzngwiehm.png","calendar":null,"carousel":false,"event_body":"
For Dear Life grapples with and makes light of the perils of daily life. Inspiration is derived from domestic spaces—a space that can be hauntingly dull as well as safe and protective. I look for comparisons and rely on the uncanny, such as a flushed baby swing mechanism moving a broom to sweep the floor, referencing the monotony and ingenuity of motherhood.

Many of the domestic structures are stressed or bent, referencing strain of one in a supporting role; however, in their altered form, they become visible and accomplish new feats, such as a shelf standing up on its own. I translate the push and pull of my own experience through tethered movements, contingent forms, reaching objects, and broom bristles. The absurd hints toward the profound while acknowledging struggle.

https://www.arcgallery.org/exhibitions-archive/lisa-walcott
","name":"Exhibitions","organization_type_id":"1","district_id":"2","telephone":"+13128775760","website":"http://www.arcgallery.org","email":"info@arcgallery.org","hours":"Th & Fr 2–6pm; Sa & Su 12–4pm","location":"1463 W.
