It depends on how you look.

The Block Museum of Art at Northwestern University is an engine that drives questioning, experimentation, and collaboration across fields of study, with visual arts at the center. We do this by activating art’s power as a form of insight, research, and knowledge creation that makes human experience visible and material. Fueled by diverse perspectives and ways of knowing, we create shared encounters with art and with one another to deepen understandings of the world and our place within it.

Through exhibitions, classes, programs, screenings, and initiatives, The Block convenes bold conversations that explore the relevance of art to our lives and that deepen our thinking. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with with Professors Domietta Torlasco and Massimiliano Delfino of Northwestern University, and Professor Federico Faloppa of the University of Reading.

In this acclaimed film which won top directing and acting prizes at the Venice Film Festival, writer-director Garrone presents a “reverse shot” of the immigration experience while unfurling an epic, cinematographically magnificent odyssey from West Africa to Italy. The story is told through the mind’s eye and experiences of two Senegalese teenagers living in Dakar who yearn for a brighter future in Europe. Yet between their dreams and reality lies a treacherous journey through a labyrinth of checkpoints, the scorched Saharan desert, a fetid North African prison and the vast waters of the Mediterranean where thousands have died packed inside vessels barely fit for passage.

“A grand, honestly felt emotional sweep… Garrone’s most robust, purely satisfying filmmaking since his international breakthrough with Gomorrah 15 years ago'” -Variety

","name":"Film / Video Screening","organization_type_id":"5","district_id":"6","telephone":"+18474914000","website":"http://www.blockmuseum.northwestern.edu","email":"block-museum@northwestern.edu","hours":"W–F 12–8pm Sa & Su 12–5pm Closed M & Tu","location":"Northwestern University 40 Arts Circle Dr. Evanston, IL 60208","display_location":"Northwestern University 40 Arts Circle Dr. Evanston, IL 60208","latitude":"42.052370","longitude":"-87.672710","contact":"Lisa Graziose Corrin, The Ellen Philips Katz Director","sub_district_id":"25","promoted_at":"2022-01-02T01:20:15.821Z","optional_sort_name":"","paid":true,"position":9,"category_name":"Film / Video Screening","orgname":"Block Museum of Art","orgslug":"block-museum-of-art","image":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1744660785/vl6qpy01kx74aqoycnlx.png"}
