We are located just “South of North Avenue” (SoNa) on Ashland Avenue and east of the iconic intersection of Damen, Milwaukee, and North Avenue.

The gallery features art in a variety of media including paintings, prints, sculpture, photography, collages, ceramics, textiles, and occasional performances of poetry, music, and theater. The artwork carried by SoNa Chicago reflects the creativity and abundant energy of the human spirit, affirming the beauty in the world and the potential for joy and the advancement of humanity as a force for good. Although we will put a spotlight on Chicago artists, we want the dialogue between artists and the community to be global. We view our space as a venue for conversation, community, and a celebration of the arts. SoNa Chicago opened in May 2023. We look forward to collaborating with our neighbors and with artists and galleries across the city.

Image: Jill Fox, graphic designer
","type":"EventCategory","state":"published","slug":"artist-talks-panel-discussions","created_at":"2018-10-22 18:54:31.814977","updated_at":"2018-12-20 22:48:03.447021","excerpt":"","is_timeless":false,"organization_id":1196,"highlighted":false,"opening_starts_at":null,"opening_ends_at":null,"searchable":"'19th':32B,236B '20':138B '2015':173B '30':36B '6':34B '7':35B 'adam':3A,21B,116B 'akemi':252B 'art':42B,106B 'artist':113B,135B,206B 'audienc':129B 'base':112B 'beyond':226B 'broader':83B 'brook':4A,22B,117B 'celebr':151B 'challeng':155B 'chicago':40B,62B,93B,111B,194B,233B 'co':58B 'co-cur':57B 'collabor':107B 'come':230B 'conceptu':105B 'conjunct':91B 'contemporari':41B 'context':76B 'continu':195B 'convers':1A,13B,222B,245B 'creativ':186B 'credit':258B 'cultiv':179B 'curat':59B 'discours':215B 'discuss':48B,67B 'donnel':56B 'educ':115B 'elev':157B 'endeavor':163B 'engag':208B 'event':86B 'everyday':159B 'exhibit':94B,191B,240B 'experi':160B 'explor':149B 'extend':224B 'found':171B 'founder':20B,249B 'friday':30B 'galleri':228B 'held':89B 'imag':251B 'incorpor':128B 'industri':8A,15B,78B,96B,259B 'instal':144B 'interact':132B 'intervent':147B 'invit':198B 'ioto':19B,70B,175B,248B 'k':54B 'larger':75B 'lifetim':254B 'made':108B 'mat':6A 'mathew':24B,119B 'moder':51B 'molli':53B 'narrat':212B 'new':205B 'nomo':253B 'o':55B 'object':145B 'often':124B 'ordinari':11A,18B,81B,99B,152B,262B 'part':219B 'particip':130B,242B 'perform':125B,143B 'person':104B,211B 'photo':257B 'place':28B 'pm':37B 'public':214B 'question':184B 'radic':183B 'refresh':43B 'resid':72B,177B 'rigor':187B 'sculptur':127B 'septemb':31B,235B 'serv':46B 'sinc':169B 'sona':39B,61B,193B,232B 'space':181B 'studi':166B 'summer':71B,176B 'take':27B 'tradit':197B 'two':103B 'two-person':102B 'unfold':203B 'use':142B 'vener':168B 'view':238B 'visitor':199B 'voic':207B 'wall':229B 'weekend':95B 'well':225B 'wilson':7A,25B,120B 'wit':201B 'work':84B,122B 'worthi':164B 'www.industryoftheordinary.com':250B 'year':139B,189B '人間':256B '人间':255B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1734533705/kls9yz1bnislyzl1oklh.jpg","calendar":null,"carousel":false,"event_body":"
A conversation with Industry of the Ordinary (IOTO) Founders Adam Brooks and Mathew Wilson will take place on Friday, September 19th from 6–7:30 pm at SoNa Chicago Contemporary Art. Their work is often performative or sculptural, incorporating audience participation and interaction with the artists. For over 20 years, they have used performance, installation, objects, and interventions to explore and celebrate “ordinariness” and to challenge and elevate the everyday experience into an endeavor worthy of study and veneration.

Since its founding in 2015, the IOTO Summer Residency has cultivated a space for radical questioning and creative rigor.
