A nagging concern for some collectors is what to do with a collection ardently assembled over time, if or when their circumstances change. It’s a complicated question without a one-size-fits-all answer. The right approach will depend on family dynamics, tax and financial planning considerations, and the value and composition of the collection.

One of my clients gave me permission to share (on a disguised basis) the integrated plan we created last year for their collection. It serves as an example of all that’s involved in creating a pragmatic financial plan for a valuable art collection.

By Doug Woodham, Artsy Editorial

","published_at":"2020-06-23 12:00:00","state":"published","slug":"news-from-around-the-art-world-june-23-2020","type":"NewsPost","meta_description":"","text":null,"created_at":"2020-06-23 16:03:22.729593","updated_at":"2020-06-23 16:22:43.435042","category_id":2,"highlighted":false,"searchable":"'/shutterstock':135B '1':93B '100':303B '101':91B '191':94B '2019':332B '2020':9A,315B '2021':288B '23':8A '25':305B 'abhk':316B 'activist':167B 'add':36B 'admitt':313B 'alex':243B 'alley':46B 'american':156B 'amid':220B 'anna':319B 'answer':397B 'applic':285B 'approach':400B 'architect':52B,102B 'ardent':375B 'around':3A 'art':5A,256B,274B,279B,322B,330B,345B,347B,461B 'artnew':245B 'artsi':466B 'assembl':376B 'automat':265B,310B 'away':219B 'barron':328B 'basel':257B,275B,280B 'basi':431B 'black':222B 'blair':123B 'bradi':320B 'brian':24B 'build':59B 'cancel':255B 'cassella/chicago':25B 'chang':384B 'chicago':38B,101B,125B 'circumst':383B 'client':422B 'collect':74B,346B,348B,374B,418B,441B,462B 'collector':331B,367B 'colonialist':188B 'come':200B 'complic':388B 'composit':415B 'concern':364B 'consider':410B 'contemporari':334B 'controversi':138B,235B 'creat':436B,453B 'criteria':286B 'cut':301B 'depend':402B 'design':30B 'detail':130B 'differ':359B 'disguis':430B 'doug':464B 'down-the-alley':43B 'drive':23B,115B 'driver':19B,111B 'due':249B 'dynam':405B 'editori':467B 'encourag':277B 'espous':185B 'eugen':193B 'everi':48B 'exampl':83B,446B 'exhibitor':248B,317B 'explain':139B 'extraordinari':54B 'factor':336B 'fair':289B 'famili':404B 'far':80B,241B 'fashion':68B 'fee':308B 'financi':408B,456B 'fit':395B 'foot':96B 'foot-tal':95B 'former':150B,180B 'galleri':41B,278B,290B 'gang':29B,104B,107B 'gang-design':28B 'gave':423B 'get':53B 'give':13B,109B 'greenberg':244B 'grid':66B 'guid':338B 'hear':173B 'hg':333B 'high':118B 'high-octan':117B 'histori':160B 'hong':259B,282B 'imag':69B 'impress':15B,40B 'integr':433B 'involv':451B 'j':327B 'jeann':27B,103B 'jolt':121B 'june':7A 'kamin':124B 'kong':260B,283B 'lake':21B,113B 'last':199B,437B 'latest':77B 'liber':57B 'live':223B 'long':340B 'long-term':339B 'longer':292B 'mani':208B,355B,358B 'matter':224B 'may':204B 'mindset':75B 'monument':147B,175B 'museum':144B,157B 'nag':363B 'natur':159B 'new':142B,162B 'news':1A,165B 'newspap':323B 'northbound':18B,110B 'notabl':233B 'octan':119B 'often':50B 'one':206B,229B,236B,393B,419B 'one-size-fits-al':392B 'ongo':221B 'open':33B,90B 'opportun':55B 'part':252B 'passion':351B 'payment':300B 'permiss':425B 'phenomenon':86B 'physic':297B 'plan':342B,409B,434B,457B 'point':361B 'pragmat':455B 'present':273B 'presid':152B,183B 'price':360B 'promot':192B 'protest':225B 'provid':267B 'pursu':353B 'question':389B 'racist':186B 're':312B 're-admitt':311B 'read':127B,246B,324B,468B 'readmit':266B 'regular':63B 'relax':284B 'relentless':62B 'remov':145B,239B 'requir':293B 'reson':71B 'reveal':164B 'right':399B 'roosevelt':136B,178B 'serv':443B 'set':215B 'share':427B 'shore':22B,114B 'similar':272B 'size':394B 'slate':237B 'soon':31B,88B 'space':298B 'sport':352B 'stand':307B 'state':182B 'statu':137B,203B 'statue.mediapunch':134B 'statue.mediapunch/shutterstock':133B 'stori':92B 'studio':106B 'sunday':154B 'susan':326B 'take':251B 'taken':218B 'tall':97B 'tallest':82B 'tax':406B 'term':341B 'theodor':177B 'theori':196B 'though':51B 'three':335B 'time':378B 'tower':12B,35B,99B 'tribun':26B,126B 'u.s':151B,211B 'unit':181B 'valu':413B 'valuabl':460B 'view':16B,47B,189B 'vista':11B,34B,98B 'visual':120B 'wait':170B 'without':390B 'woodham':465B 'world':6A 'would':197B 'year':171B,262B,438B 'york':143B,163B","thumbnail":"https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/v1721767404/d0yy4jr5corip4ez06uu.jpg","editor_pick":false,"category_name":"Previews"},"related":[{"id":14425,"title":"New Exhibitions, Tours and Open Houses: October 17 and 18","excerpt":"","body":"
This weekend's art plans can take you across Chicago, into the far suburbs, and north to Wisconsin.

The Chicago Architecture Center’s annual Open House Chicago opens doors to distinctive spaces, while family activities and an outdoor sculpture tour offer more ways to spend time with art.

Here is a look at what’s on this Saturday and Sunday.
